Former President George W. Bush describes 9/11 in the upcoming National Geographic documentary, "George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview."

Bush recently recounted his memories of the day that changed his presidency in a new interview with National Geographic, set to air during a week of Sept. 11-themed shows commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the attacks.

In a clip from the interview, Bush describes the first moments when he learned of the attacks while visiting a Florida elementary school. Just before walking into the classroom, he was informed that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center.

“I had been notified that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At first I thought it was a light aircraft, and my reaction was man, either the weather was bad or something extraordinary happened to the pilot,” Bush says. “I then informed some of my staff members to provide help to New York City, whatever help they needed to take care of this incident, and then walked into the classroom.”

“The classroom was full of kids who were reading and in the back of the classroom there‘s the full press corps and staffers and some adults and I’m been intently listening to the lesson and I felt a presence behind me. And Andy Card’s Massachusetts accent was whispering in my ear, a second plane has hit the second tower. America is under the attack.”

      I think Obama would have wet his pants and caused panic in the classroom. As much as I now think George H. Bush was progressive light, he was patriotic and loved this country and our military. I think he handled it great. What do you think the kids and adults would have done had he stood up and made the announcement right there? It would have ruined those kids’ memories of a day with the President.

I don’t know what this nation would have done if it had not been for your resolve, and commitment to hunt down and kill the terrorists who started this unprovoked war. Most of us know that Obama had nothing to do with the killing of Obama. It is too bad that Obama is such a wus, and inthree years have now put this country in danger of more attacks by his cow-tow, nonchalent attitude towards Islamic terrorism. Remembering Obama’s famous statement in one of the presidential debates when he said, “some of you might remember 9/11″, and than he paused,waiting for his audience to start laughing – no one laughed.       So according to you 2 planes struck the twin towers but the pentagon instead of being the target of the third hijacked plane was hit by a missile. A missile that could be traced back to whom? Did someone go to Missiles R Us and pay cash. In the mean time what happened to the third plane along with the passengers or is that information coming out in the August issue.

      Seriously I have never thought for a moment that Bush‘s reaction were wrong here and I’m anything but a Bush fan. Michael Moore among others have slammed Bush for finishing the story he was reading to the class. Frankly, I think that was one of Bush’s finest moments, if not if his finest. He could have accomplished nothing from bolting from the room upon hearing the news. What impression would that have made on anyone? Freak out the kids? Look like he was personally afraid?

      Frankly, and I am very seriously not a fan of Bush, I think the few minutes he coolly stayed to finish his story were the best of his presidency.

      Isn’t it funny to look at GW now and compare his poise, maturity and the just plain presidential look about him to the way Obama looks and carries himself.     Like many of the rest of you, at first I thought the first plane was a light plane. Then when I saw the second plane hit I knew we were under attack. President Bush did exactly as he should have and he responded with courage. I still watch the footage of him receiving the news in front of those kids, his demeanor did not change because he was not going to scare the kids and start a panic. That is what a real adult does. I still disagree with some of his politics, but he has my admiration for his handling of the situation.

      Google photos of the 9/11 Pentagon attack. Look at the photos of the Pentagon just before the upper floors fell down, you will only see ONE hole.
      Where are the 2 holes from the boeing 757 engines, 6 tons each, traveling (office story) at over 520 MPH?
      The Pentagon is the brains of the US Military War Machine. You can just drive/walk around the Pentagon and count all of the cameras they have pointed everywhere. Why won’t the DoD/Federal Government release a video showing a boeing 757 hitting the side of the Pentagon?
      Only 2 video have ever been released and neither one shows a boeing 757 hitting the pentagon.
      Why don’t they release the videos the FBI confiscated from the hotel and gas-station near the pentagon?

      You have seen to many loony tune cartoons where someone crashes through a wall leaving their silhouette shaped hole in the wall. A plane is nothing more then an aluminum tube with wings attached. When it slams at 500mph into a reenforced steel and concrete wall the wings at the attachment point to the wing are sheered off and follow the rest of the plane. Try this experiment. Find an open doorway at the end of a long corridor. Stretch your arms out like wings, run run as fast as you can toward the open door with arms outstretched. After you inter the room get back to us as what happened if you can .

      I was working outside that morning and someone came up to me and said, “didn’t you hear, the World Trade Center is gone and they say another plane is headed toward Washington”- I couldn’t believe it so I went home and turned on the TV just in time to hear Giuliani tell everyone to start walking out of Manhattan as fast as they could. Then came the news of the Pentagon and the crash in PA. I also remember that the FOX News coverage went commercial free for an entire week! Seems like just yesterday…

Eustis that day at work and moments before the second plane hit CBS was showing video of the first plane hitting so your proof is no proof at all. You sound like you may be a closet 9/11 Truther. I have read Bush’s book and saw many of his recounts of that day and his recollection of that day seems to not change.

      It’s hard to dispute the fact that two planes hit the WTC towers. However, it is ever increasingly hard to prove that a jet hit the Pentagon. Entire peices of the plane just don’t disappear. Numerous military offices reported smelling explsives in the air. The on;y video I ever saw released shows a blur just as it hits the building….looks like a missle, not a jet. Don’t underestimated the US government and what lenghts it is willing to go to get what it wants. Read Studs Terkle, Oral History of WW II, it will give some insight about just how jacked up the US really is. At the end of the war, we were already plotting against the Russians, hell Berlin was still smoking. Until they release a video from other vantage points, and don‘t tell me the Pentagon doesn’t have a camera that caught what hit it, I will not trust them. I saw the jets hit WTC but the others…not so sure. Not a truther, just some common sense observations is all.

Which gas station? And if you give me any name of a hotel or gas station… you would be full of it. The flight that hit the Pentagon struck the west side of the pentagon…. there are no hotels or gas stations near the pentagon on that side because that side neighbors Arlington National Cemetary. All you 9/11 conspiracy nuts need to actually consider medication to fix your delusions. 64 souls lost their lives on that flight, more inside the Pentagon. Missle my arse.       The gas-station located on S. Joyce St. between S. SWouthgate Rd. and S. Washington Blvd……that gas-station is about 1650 feet from the side of the Pentagon that got hit on 9/11. The name of the station is NEX.
      If you google/map the location of the station you can see the Pentagon under the awning where the pumps are. You can also see the cameras on the gas-station.

      Sheraton National Hotel located on S. Orme St. at the corner of Columbis Pike. The Hotel faces the side of the Pentagon that got hit and is about 4,300 feet from it.
      If you Google Earth the hotel you can see the cameras on top of the hotel.

      The engines of the Boeing 757 were 6 tons (12,000lbs.) each. They (the engines) were traveling at (offical story) over 520 MPH. The core shafts (the part that the compressor blades attach to) were made of titanium, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, chromoly, tungsten and were/are about 16“ in diameter and about 80” long spinning at about 35-40,000 RPM at (offical story) full throttle.
      The walls on the Pentagon are 22″ of reenforced concrete (reenfoced with 1″ steel re-bar).
      Those boeing 757 engine shafts would have punched right through those walls.

      Both of you people are way-off. Stop trying to put on a show for the blaze readers…WE ALL know the ‘offical 9/11 story’ was a lie.

      I’m looking at the Pentagon right now, is the side where the trees are, the west side—arlington side on VA-27 AKA Washing Blvd.?

      I see no gas station. (on theEast side of Joyce looks to be a wearhouse. No gas station pumps there.)

      Now just to the other side of Joyce between Southgate & Washington Blvd is Foxcroft Heights.

      It would help if you post an exact pic of the gas station and the hotel.

    The thing is I recall vividly that day and how the press tore into President Bush so savagly for his reaction; which to me seemed practical and pragmatic, since he was with a room full of young kids, the teacher and the media. I can understand his point of view very well and easily, he had a hard job to do, and a crisis to deal with from a major terrorist attack.

    Yet he was regarded as a villan for not jumping up immediatly and stamping off like a certain standing POTUS does almost every time he fails to get his way.

    A peice of e-mail I got shows the stark differences the liberal fanatics show between Bush, which we mostly know already and how they see Obama:

    “Really, a rightous, thinking, educated, patient man is the most dangerous opponet to have. The good ole boys can not beat Presedent Obama on any level. You know the rules, life is like a game of chess; Obama will say “checkmate” any day now. ”

    Understand, those are the e-mail senders own words and oppinion, not my own. Especially as I feel that Obama needs to be put in jail and the door welded shut.

    Mr Bush did the best he could, with at the time limited information and preparation. I have to wonder if any of us were in his shoes at the time would have really done much better.

    Striking memories from 9/11, for me:

    The devastation of realizing that our country was being attacked.
    The horror of the loss of lives and the terror that the people must have been feeling.
    The eerie quiet of having no planes in the sky around the airports.
    Realizing that we were at war.
    The realization that there were people in this country who hold so much hate, that they criticized the President for how he reacted, and the criticism came immediately, while the rest of us were dealing with the tragedy. I personally thought that he reacted exactly how I would have reacted had I been in front of a classroom full of children and reporters. I learned that there are people, for whom their hatred is so strong that it is a higher priority than grieving such a terrible disaster and joining in emotional unity with their fellow countrymen.

      I woke up shortly after the first plane hit and turned on the TV. Like everyone else I thought it was an accident at first until the second plane hit. I remember my first thought clearly. I wondered if President Bush would be up to the task. I had questions about his experience since before the election and didn’t know if he had the ability to deal with what had happened. I think he showed that he did.

      I considered President Bush to be barely qualified to be president at the time of his election. Since President Obama’s election, I have wondered how we could be so foolish to follow electing a barely qualified president with electing the least qualified president in our history.

      Bush lied to the world and said iraq possess wmd. And it was a proven lie . Jews are now supporting jews. Jews will be liar. Only liar support to liar. Obama is clean and never said lie. He is a man of principle. And i love him a lot. Because he never hurt to any community by his speeches and he said the truth to jews. To vacate the land and go back to 1967 borders. I love him and we muslims of the world love him a lot, because of his outspoken character. And supporting the truth that jerusalem belongs to palestine, jews came from poland, russia and germany.       When are you going to realize that BUSH ran up the debt. Bush spent a TRILLION on a war in Iraq started on all false premises. No WMD were found, Saddam had NOTHING to do with 911, it was an obvious inside job anyway with WT7, the 3rd building coming down being the HUGE loose end in the so called official government version of the story.

      The Bush family likes to start and fight these wars with the arab nations. I am sick to death of them. This man can’t white wash his history. It is obvious something terrible is up and he is no better than Clinton, and in my book now, worse.

    I remember that day like it was yesterday. And, I would not have wanted to be in President Bush’s. He had some hard decisions that needed to be made. God bless him for getting the United States through this horrible incident.

      ..He showed valor and leadership in my eyes. The left however had different eyes and looked at this picture with hatred for the man and lust in their hearts about how they could make him out more stupid than ever, when he was I believe simply registering the shock of what was happening while at the same not letting the children know that a tragedy was taking place. Valiant! and then he went straight down to where all the dirt and grime and blood was and the wailing of people and grabbed his cheerleader mike so he could encourage us. Him and Gulie .. They were great that day. Just what the country needed.

    I find it galling that the leftards wanted GWB to freak out, scream, rip his shirt open, and yell TARGET ME, NOT THE CIVILIANS! What was he supposed to do? He didn’t know how extensive the cluster eff known as 9/11 would be. He did his best, our military did their best, and double kudos to the NYPD and FDNY who did much more than could be imagined…..

      It’s not just building 7 that raises so many questions.
      Take a look at this video. It is a video of Shanksville, PA a few years before UA Flight 93 supposedly crashed there. It will blow your mind.

      Another big question raised is why won’t the Department of Defense and Federal Gevernment release a video of a Boeing 757 hitting the side of the Pentagon? The Pentagon is the Brains of the US Military War Machine and is covered with cameras, you can just drive around the Penatgon and count the cameras out side of it, but yet no videos released. They won’t even release the videos from the Hotel and gas-station by the Pentagon that the FBI confiscated within minutes of the attack. (attack by what???).
      They only released 2 videos and neither show a Boeing 757 in them.

      there is so much of this stuff no one human can research it all
      so I stay focused on Tower 7 because most people don’t even know it fell on 911

      Think about that for a minute. A roomful of kids could not see the president of the USA get up and cut short a book reading when the nation is under attack because it might frighten them. The entire country was frightened, the parents of many of those kids were likely waiting outside the school to take their kids home that day (as I did with mine just to make them feel safer). All this and the president did not want to frighten a classroom of kids. Makes no sense now and made less sense then.

      How horrified and overwhelming sad President Bush looked upon hearing the news of the attack against Americans on American soil. At first, no one believed that the fist plane that hit the Towers was anything but an accident, even when the second hit, the news commentators could not bring themselves to believe the unthinkable.
      Each person should remember how he/she felt and multiply that by 350 Million (the # of Americans that the President is responsible to & for) and that is I imagine how Prez Bush felt and from his demeanor still feels.

      When WT7, that was NOT hit by a plane, comes down in free fall fashion, a strategic building BTW, that should give any thinking person about how much all of this was an inside job. When one couples the thermite findings in the rubble of the twin towers, the molten metal, etc., then it becomes even more obvious what is going on.

      I am in total agreement with your comment! I miss the class, dignity and total love of our counrtry President Bush had and still has. He was an awesome person! I highly recommend his book which goes thru these days! It is hard to read as it takes you back and stirs the horrific memories I have of those days and the amazing fortitude President Bush showed. I miss so much that is not present now–I’m tired of an idiot pointing at me over TV treating me like some child by a man who has no class, character, capability and is the worst President in my lifetime! Oh yes, President Bush, I miss you more then you will ever know!
