George Will Confronts MSNBC Analyst for Comparing Tea Party to Terrorists

We already brought you one clip of George Will form the ABC roundtable show “This Week,” in which he heavily criticized S&P and their downgrade of the U.S. That was a good clip. But there’s another clip from that program featuring Will that might cause some Tea Party conservatives to leap out of their seats and shout a hearty, Sunday-morning, “Hallelujah!”

Steve Rattner is a regular guest analyst on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and a former Obama adviser. Recently he labeled the Tea Party “economic terrorist” for not — in his estimation — playing fair during the debt ceiling negotiations. According to him, it was “unreasonable” for Tea Party congressman not to consider any tax increases, and it was wrong for them to threaten not to raise the debt limit unless such increases were taken off the table.

Host Christiane Amanpour brought up Rattner’s comments, who then tried to explain them away. The moment was made awkward by the fact the Rep. Jason Chaffetz — one such “terrorist” — was on the show and sitting across from Rattner:

“I did say that [about] those who essentially were trying to hold up and bring the U.S. to the brink of default without being reasonable in their compromise . . . But you do have one group of people who are saying no tax increases, never, no how – when in fact the tax decreases under President Bush partly got us in this problem.”

That set of a spat between Rattner and Will, who went on to remind Rattner that he had also called Tea Partiers suicide bombers. Rattner denied that, but as Mediaite points out, “Rattner’s exact words were that members of the Tea Party were essentially strapping dynamite to their chest as a negotiation strategy.” Semantics.*

As the debate continued, Will pulled out his ace in the hole. See, what Rattner failed to realize — or realized but didn’t want to admit — is that there were actually more Democrats in the House that eventually voted against the compromise than Republicans. That point wasn’t lost to Will:

“You do know that 95 House Democrats voted against raising the debt ceiling as compared to only 66 House Republicans. You do know that 26 Democratic Senators voted against raising the debt ceiling?”

Will makes a good point. But guess what? Amanpour quickly changed the subject, giving Rattner an out and shielding him from having to respond to the the point.

You can watch the lively discussion below:

*UPDATE:

NewsBusters has the audio of Rattner comparing the Tea Party to suicide bombers. Yes, he didn’t say the word “suicide bombers,” but he described them in graphic detail:

If the Democrats are going to blame the Tea Party for S & P’s downgrade, then the GOP and the Tea Party members need to stand up and say: We will take any blame you throw our way when your “compromising” is in our favor. But, when you block all efforts for a turn-around in U. S. fiscal responsibility and economics, then we do NOT own it. Point the finger in the right direction.” I want to hear from the Republicans a stronger defense. So far, there’s little or nothing. Tea Partiers need to rally and stand firm.

What cracks me up is how the lefties are saying the TEA Party is holding them hostage by saying we are Taxed Enough Already (T.E.A.) What part of this blatant move against higher taxes and spending do they not understand? It really is surreal to talk to people like John Kerry because when we are looking at a blue sky and we say, “wow, that’s a blue sky” while nodding our heads, the left is saying it’s nighttime….does B.S. make something more true over there? Have the laws of nature been suspended in their world?

This is such a disgrace and only in America can idiots voice their opinions and get away with it. The idea that the downgrade is being called a “Tea Party Downgrade” is proof of this. What about it being called “The Democratic Disgrace” ? The first time this country has been downgraded is with a Democratic President and a Democratic Senate. Then to call people who believe that this country has a spending problem, terrorist. I have an issue –big issue with this. And last but not least in this interview, which I say with a smirk, because Amandapore certainly skews her agenda, is to blame it on the Constitution and to hold Europes way to govern as the shrine is laughable as we see each one of those countries taking a dive. Stop the spending, bring back the Made in The USA, Jobs, our borders, the illegals and such need to be addressed… All this other name calling and hot air speaking is good for them all to be a room and listen to each other. Let the rest of us gather and come up with solutions.

@Ecinom, that statement is illogical! The Tea party stuck to its guns of not raising taxes and wanted less spending and you say that lead to the downgrade? Do you know how credit is rated? The libs say the tea party did not compromise, but they do not realize that the raise in the debt ceiling was their compromise! Had it been up to them we would have kept our AAA rating and spent within our means!

Encino – I’m still waiting for details on the Democratic plan that would have avoided a downgrade. They sure never had a plan during the debate, and still don’t… all they have is their silver bullet called taxes. There haven’t been any published details even on the Boehner/Obama plan. The media and Dems continue using an imaginary plan as proof the Dems are serious about the economy.

Put the blame where it should be – Harry Reid and Senate Dems. No debate on Cut Cap and Balance because they refused to consider being limited on spending, which is the heart of our debt problem. CC&B would have prevented a downgrade, and even an amended CC&B bill may have as well, but was tabled with no discussion.

The terrorists in DC are the D’s who refuse to make any economic changes that may threaten their political careers.

Great points, Flag. The media is quick to point out the higher ‘disapproval’ rating of Republican congress vs their Democratic counterparts, but what they don’t realize is how many of the disapproval votes are coming from those of us who are ready to change horses in the Republican party, too. That doesn’t make the liberal progressive position any stronger; on the contrary, if they think they have a problem now, wait until they see what they have to deal with after the 2012 elections.

Problem Solved. The downgrade was because Harry Reid tabled the Bill that S & P would have considered that we were trying to cut our debt. This Cut, Cap & Balance passed in the House and Reid wouldn’t let it go to the floor of the Senate for a Vote because he knew it would pass.
His selfishness caused all this Triple A rating cut, the stock market to tank today and the smug little Jackdonkey is snickering that he was the one who caused all this. NOT THE TEA PARTY

There’s just ONE man in Washington DC that must accept the blame and reponsability for the current economical crisis in America. That one man IS NOT George W. Bush. He currently lives in Dallas and Crawford Texas. The resident who lives in the big Whitehouse at 1600 Pensylvania Avenue is the man to blame. Maybe someone will find Harry Truman’s old plaque that said “The Buck Stops Here” and secretly put it on Obama’s Oval Office desk.

That man’s name is BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, or at least that’s the name he is currently going by at this present time. He has been know by other names. One arrogant and egotistical incompetent has surrounded himself with other arrogant and egotistical incompetents. They share the same leftwing liberal and socialistic agenda.

Obama is a liar and a coward who refuses to face the facts and accept the blame for the loss of our AAA credit rating. He promised a “fundamental transformation in America” and he has fulfilled that promise, while breaking almost all the others he made on the campaign trail and since occupying the Whitehouse. Responsability doesn’t start at the bottem and go up.

Responsability starts at the top and goes down. It‘s amazing to me that since Obama is proclaimed to be such an intelectual Harvard Law School graduate that he’s incapable od grasping this simple truth. Or. maybe he just refuses to do so, hoping the problems will just somehow miraculously go away and he can play a few more rounds of golf or take ano

What about “we’re broke” don’t these people understand? In our own homes we stop spending on things we really don’t need, tighten the belt, until things get better. Our smart, Harvard educated government can’t seem to understand this simple rule. Keep spending is their motto~ absolutely IDIOTS seem to run this country.

Look around you. Those who buy new expensive homes, new cars, new clothes etc. and charge horrible expenses to their credit card like it never needs to be repaid are the ones losing their homes, cars and their lives change and they wonder what happened. Stop spending money you don’t have is what happened. DUH?
Just like schools. It’s for the children, it’s for the children as they raise taxes constantly and when you look into it, all the extra money goes to administration etc., little goes to the children. Years ago when they had one room school houses, the children seemed to actually get a better education, at least they always seemed smarter in the RRR’s than most children now getting constantly low scores in the tests they have to take. Million dollar schools don’t help kids learn, good teachers do. The Unions keep our kids dumb because they can’t get rid of the really bad teachers.
Thanks Unions and bad teachers who are in it for a lifetime pay check and 3 months off every summer and retirements. You are responsible for dumbing down our children. Common sense.

Um, no…You see, responsible people would have said “Due to the Bush tax cuts, we have less revenue to spend. Therefore, we will spend what we do have as best as possible.”

What Democrats (and many RINO’s) said, was “So what if we have less revenue…we want it, we SPEND it.”

I’m beginning to think that a new election law should be put in place. For the next 30 years, you may not run for or be appointed to office if you are over 40. You may not be re-elected if you are over 50.

I say this because I think the vast majority of the old farts in Washington and in our states who hold office, have no desire to make the needed (and painful) changes which will turn our country around. They are just going to do business as usual and ride the gravy train…knowing they’ll be dead long before the problems actually effect them on a personal level.

The problem is that they continue to blame the deficit on the “Bush Tax Cuts” when those numbers are somewhat speculative. Meanwhile when you cut spending, those numbers are concrete. Why don’t we deal in facts, not speculation and control what we can?

Because Liberals just don‘t think that way and it doesn’t fit their narrative. Reality is just too difficult to deal with.

Great point regarding tax revenue being speculative. And the revenue from Bush tax cuts (shouldn’t they be called the obama tax cuts since he extended them?), even if the economy didn’t slow down, would only be a drop in the bucket compared to how they are spending it.
But unfortunately the way washington works spending cuts are speculative as well.

And you‘ve got to wonder why the Republicans aren’t all over this fact?? They just sit back and take it. They have the McCain syndrome…. Need lots more new blood in the Republican party.

I guess “racist” wasn’t successful enough when attacking Americans who identify with AMERICAN principles (a.k.a., TEA Party principles), so, the socialist democrats must now resort to accusations of “TERRORIST”

And, where is the potus and wh on all this?
Is obama unaware of the vitriol and hyperbole?
I thought he disapproved of this sort of thing?
Is it only CONSERVATIVE hypberbole, of which obama disapproves?
Or, is he letting his minions do his dirty work, keeping himself at a plausibly deniable distance?

    I‘m just askin’.

Well, I don’t have the EO number, but on July 25th, Obama passed an Executive Order concerning confiscating the property of terrorists. And then, they accuse the Tea Party Patriots of being terrorists. I think I see a link here. Read Obama‘s Dad’s paper (a critique of African Sessional Paper No. 10) You can google it. He advocates taxing 100% as long as you give them benefits from the government, and of limiting land ownership and easing towards community ownership of everything. He says it‘s the government’s job to MAKE people consolidate because if left to them it would take too long to accomplish. Sound familiar?

Of course, but it sounds so much better to say it‘s the tea party’s fault. Reality check is in fact the tea party is right, they warned everyone who would listen, but were blown off. Maybe this will be the wake up call-if they stop trying to kill the messingers, but I very much doubt it will change. There will be more name-calling than problem solving. This president is destroying this country, and I hope a few libs wake up soon and help those who want to get this country back on financial track. The odds are long though.

      Steve Rattner is a FOOL.
      Steve Rattner is a PROPAGANDIST.
Steve Rattner IS AN OBAMA CZAR WHO COULDN’T DO THE JOB.

If Steve Rattner were to standup in that video you would see Obama‘s hand and arm far out of his rear end because he’s nothing but a propagandist HAND PUPPET for the Marxist administration.

I watch the Morning Joe show on BS-MSNBC almost every morning Steve Rattner is a regular fixture on the show and well honestly he’s just a over educated derelict, an unrewarded toad in Harry Potter glasses with foolish economic ideas pimping himself for administration…. HE HAS NO CREDIBILITY!

Ok, let me get this straight and clear.

Those who have been in control for years while this problem developes, think it is right to blame those who are not and cannot be in control.???!!!!!???
    How can that be?
Oh, I see it is like a carnival switch hands game. I just hope no one really believes them.

      Ol’ Blamer obama.

Facts and logic elude the left, so they must resort to hyperbole, rhetoric, hate, and vitriol.
Actually, I believe they are FULLY aware of the facts, but, since the TRUTH always wins, they choose, rather, to IGNORE the facts and/or to REWRITE the facts.

Accusing someone else is often easier than explaining away your own actions.

      Blame, blame, blame, blame.

Reminds you of the playground bully who always gets caught eventually, then, his immediate reaction is to finger-point.

      MEN do not do this.

We are not perfect, but, MEN stand up and take RESPONSIBILITY for their actions.

Instead, we are stuck with this spoiled brat bully until Jan 2013.
