Geraldo Rivera Doubles Down: ‘Everyone That Ever Stuck Up a Convenience Store’ Wears Hoodies

Geraldo Rivera Doubles Down: Everyone That Ever Stuck Up a Convenience Store Wears Hoodies

Fox News

Geraldo Rivera doubled down Friday night on his controversial comments about the Trayvon Martin killing in which he traced the Florida teen’s death back to the hoodie he was reportedly wearing at the time.

“I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters, particularly, to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was,“ Rivera said during ”Fox and Friends” Friday morning.

The comments immediately touched off a firestorm, with even Rivera’s own son telling him he was “ashamed” of his position. Rivera didn’t back down, however, and during an appearance on “The O’Reilly Factor” said hoodies are connected to everything from convenience store hold-ups to airplane hijacker D.B. Cooper and the Unabomber.

“I’m telling you, half of it is the way the young men look,” Rivera said. “If a cop looks at three kids on the corner, and they’ve got those hoodies up — and this is where I got in trouble with the Trayvon Martin case — if they’ve got those hoodies up, and they’re hanging out on the corner, the cops look at them and say hmm, hoodies. Who else wheres hoodies? Everyone that ever stuck up a convenience store, D.B. Cooper the guy that hijacked the plane, Ted Kaczynski the Unabomber, who wears these hoodies?

He continued, “Parents, don’t let your kids go out wearing these damn hoodies, because they could attract the attention not only of the cops but of nutjobs apparently like this George Zimmerman. And when they see and respond, it is a stereotype, it is repugnant, it is all the things that offend us, but it is real life. It is reality.”

“So why are people blaming you then?” Bill O’Reilly asked.

“They feel I am blaming the victim for his own demise and I am not,” he said.

What’s up with Geraldo making sense for a change? Usually, he spends countless minutes defending the bottom feeders in this country, when he should be shaming them into shape.

He’s still an idiot, though, that does much more harm than good by defending people that have no business being defended. He should rather spend his time defending those people in this country that don’t piss-n-moan and whine for entitlements – you know, the ones that actually work for 30 or 40 straight years on non-public-sector jobs.

Loads of kids dress and behave oddly in this city – and I expect in all large cities. My nephew wears hoodies indoors so the other kids won’t beat him up in school. I’ve seen kids with neon blue hair, mohawks, girls with pink hair… They set themselves up to be targeted by police, but really it’s an anti-bullying technique for public school kids – “Don’t beat me up. Don’t ostracize me… I dress and act stupid too.”
Geraldo actually has a point. City kids have a choice to make… be bullied by their peers or by the police. They’d prefer to take the chance with the police (who are less likely to target them) than to be bullied at school every day. I really think it’s that simple.
My nephew saw a kid take a steak knife and try to kill another kid in school. He also said that someone tried to slash him, but he was afraid to turn the kid in because he’ll be ostracized as “a rat / a tattle” and nothing ever happens to the bad kids until it’s too late.

The purpose of wearing a hoodie is to cover your face…

Anyone covering their face in public will be viewed as suspicious regardless of race, especially young people…

I’d bet if I took to wearing a ski mask around the neighborhood, I would be viewed as suspicious too.

I Agree, Any Black Male In A Hoodie Can Be Shot On Site. Its Now Legal

Geraldo Rivera Will End Up Just Like Patrick J. Buchanan, out of work and blackballed regardless of being Hispanic or not. The White House expected a White killer not a Hispanic and is now trying to circle the wagons. Obama will soon offer Mr. Zimmerman a glass of beer out in the Rose Garden. They do not want a Rivera saying these things.

I have read many of your comments about Geraldo’s opinion of the dressing down of the hoodies. Many of you have bashed him from the left and the right.

The facts of the reality are you dress for your future, with the few exceptions of artist who promote the look but as we recall the history of this lifestyle ended the life of a couple of these artist. If you dress like a thug, you may just end up as a thug, if you dress like a street walker, you may just be treated like a street walker.

As a former inner city school teacher/coach I did a lot to educate my students to this reality. Turning around quite a few troubled kids and setting them on a better path. I do not say this to boost but to state my experience of the mind set.

If you dress for the thug lifestyle it won’t be long before you live the thug life, it’s a mind set and one follows the other. Just as one dress for success wether it be a night out trying to meet a future partner or a job interview.

The fact is that we do judge people by the way they dress and people dress a certain way for a reason. Wether its to look “cool” or fit in with those you surround yourself. The question is why does society feel the need to dress like a thug…?

Orlando 70′ weather and wearing a hoodie? If you’re not a boxer, wrestler or fighter cutting weight, why would you be wearing a hoodie in Florida 70′ weather…?

Its now legal to shoot any black male who wears a Hoodie. Convience store owners have the right of self defense to open fire as soon as a Hoodie enters their shop. Its no different than a white kid walking down the street of a black neighborhood. This may be the beginning of the Race War Blacks have been trying to start.

The Media including FOX is guilty of of total propaganda and inciting while injecting irresponsible untruths, half facts and out right lies in their reporting of this vicious attack by Trayvon on Zimmerman which ended in Zimmerman defending himself against this man and in the death of Trayvon. The Biggest lie is the picture of a 12 year old, not the 17 year old who stood at Six foot three.FOX’S Megan Kelly was total disgusting in her showing the bogus picture and accusing the police of “Stinking” in their handling of the case. He has a point, it’s just that it was made with very poor timing. Things are hot with this situation, not in the more thoughtful, objective reflection stage.
The often-run, very effective commercials for a major home security service (Brinks, I think it is) show the “bad guy” (caucasian, by the way) walking along the street pulling up his black hoodie when he goes to bust down the door and invade the home. Why would the advertising team choose that particular article of clothing to designate the “bad guy” for viewers? Because, just like the color black, it has a well-known perceived connection with “bad guy”.
Just like any mention of the fact that perhaps women should exercise a little wise discretion and not go to drunken parties dressed like porn stars, though, even after thoroughly, unequivocally condemning her assailant, people will never stop calling it “blaming the victim.”
People, do what you can to push back the sins of the world and human nature, but you have to deal wisely with reality as it is, too!

Yes, the blame still rests on the person that committed the crime, but the victim put themselves in a position to be a victim. While the overwhelming evidence is that this young man was an innocent victim, and the shooter needs to be locked up for a long time, Geraldo is correct that if you present yourself as a thug, people will think you are a thug.

After watching those ADT commercials where all the bad guys are caucasion I have decided their security systems must work only for caucasion crooks. You must have to buy one from some other company to protect your home from the black, hispanic or asian burglars. ADT has no guts if they won’t portray any of the criminals as anything other than white. Heaven forbid a black man might be portrayed committing a crime. I’ll do my business with the company I use now. They promised me their system will work against all ethnicities, just like my .45 Sig. Don’t come slinking around my home or neighborhood wearing anything that disguises your face or other features, I will treat you as a suspicious character until proven otherwise. If you walk like a thug, talk like a thug, dress like a thug then you must be a thug as far as I am concerned.

It is true – good for Geraldo – I run a foundation for offender re-entry and substance abuse and we require everyone who comes to the office must come in a collared shirt – no hoodies, no bandanas, no baggie- gang banger jeans or pants below the butt. Girls must wear shirts with sleeves and no short shorts or mini skirts . WOW how radical ! We do this because you ARE judged by how you look and dress and if you want to change your life and gain respect – a bit of compromise is required. It’s a fact whether libs like it or not.

I can‘t believe I’m agreeing with Geraldo. I read somewhere that hoodies are a “fashion statement. All ages wear them”. Rappers(who glorify killing) and thieves wear hoodies. Rappers started this ‘fashion statement’. What does it say about America, where now it is cool to dress like a thug? It‘s a tragedy Javon lost his life but why wasn’t he where he was supposed to be? I was taught growing up that if I wasn‘t where I was supposed to be then don’t be surprised if something bad happens. And yes his life is a steep price to pay. But common sense and reasonable parenting says you don‘t let your ’suspended’ kid just hang out…..and I’d never let my kid dress like a thug(unless maybe a holloween party). This kid lost his life because our American way of life now glorifies stupidity and sneers at common sense. And lookiing suspiciously at someone in a hoody walking through a gated community is not such a stretch. And communities must have watch patrols because crime is rampant. Javons parents were negligent with him. I’m sorry but they should bear some of the responsibility. Zimmerman WILL pay his own price…wait and see.
The fabric of America, the values, morals, and common sense have eroded in favor of anything goes, ‘social justice’(which is nothing more than redistribution of money), and the corruption of our leaders on ALL levels. And that is why Zimmerman was patrolling his neighborhood with gun. And that is why Javon is dead.

Trayvon was walking at night in a neighborhood that had been burglarized in the recent past.

He was dressed like a gangsta. He is not 12 like the photo the media is using. He is reported to be over 6 foot tall and a line backer for the high school foot ball team. He has a gold plated grill.

Trayvon and Zimmerman both thought they were dealing with bad guys or criminals. Neither talked it out.

According to the witness, Trayvon was sitting on Zimmerman’s chest and beating him up. Zimmerman was calling out for help. Zimmerman shot Trayvon.

Zimmerman was injured on scene matching witness account.

Zimmerman didnt touch his weapon or shoot Trayvon at first sighting.

Zimmerman didnt touch his weapon while trying to locate Trayvon behind the houses.

Zimmerman didnt touch his weapon while being knocked down.

Zimmerman didnt touch his weapon while being beat in the face and head slammed on the ground.

Zimmerman didnt touch his weapon before calling out for help.

Zimmerman shot Trayvon when the witness abandoned him.

I think this is the line of thinking on the scene with police, not racism.

They are tragic events. What we have now is politics and media selling commercials. Why did they leave out these details? Probably because it extends the story when they are finally revealed selling more commercials.

Media and Obama are irresponsible flaming this fire.

Saranda, that is if your facts are correct, which I submit evidence is there showing otherwise. Zimmerman was following but did not approach – the dispatcher told him not to follow and he said OK. He claims he was headed back to his truck. Trayvon’s girlfriend supports that in the sense she said Trayvon confronted Zimmerman. If all Zimmerman was doing was following, and if Trayvon was scared, they why was it Trayvon that confronted Zimmerman. She said she heard Trayvon ask ‘why are you following me’ and then heard Zimmerman. Shortly after there was an altercation and her phone went dead. She did not hear the shot. The MSM makes it seem Zimmerman should have known the age and lack of weapons of Trayvon but none ask if Trayvon was so scared why didn’t he call 911, why did he refuse to run like his girlfriend asked him to and why did he confront Zimmerman first. Those are facts also, and in court, Saranda, all facts matter – those that support your case and those that don’t.

If someone wants your attention, they’ll say something, if they follow without a word, I’d really be ready to be accosted and fight for my life too.
Hoodies should be outlawed, they do suggest harm, a sinister look to hide behind. Our local high school is full of them, even on very warm days. I’d be leery too. A reason for alarm.

Here is an example of media bias or salesmanship that create or flames irrational reaction. We have Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Geraldo Rivera, Obama, and various radical groups like black panthers calling for zimmerman’s punishment from death to justice.

The media shows a picture of the guy when he was 12. Talks about he had skittles.

He is 6′3” and a linebacker for his high school football team. He has gold teeth and tats. He was walking in a neighborhood at night and through back yards. Zimmerman is reported to be a 5′3” tubby. Do these facts warrant death. No of course not. But ask yourself why its omitted from the narrative.

Its a tragic set of events that are extremely unfortunate. I can only speculate the following. Tryvon was pissed he was being followed because of being black or thought he was in danger. Zimmerman thought he was following a criminal. Neither communicated with each other like human beings to work it out. Tryvon jumped a guy following him. It tragically escalated. Each thinking the other was a bad buy. Zimmerman didnt shoot him first thing. He didnt shoot him when being sat on. He didnt shoot him while having his head slammed into the earth and face pummeled. He didnt shoot him before crying out for help. After listening to this witness I can see how police thought it was last resort. It is not racism. It is tragic events. Now its about politics and selling commercials on the news.

I wish someone would step up and talk

Justjason – your speculation falls apart with the the 911 operator telling zimmerman to not approach the kid. Anything that happens once he disregarded that instruction falls on zimmerman. He initiated whatever confrontation took place and so self defense is not even part of the discussion.

I think you just stood up. I think they should print your story. Very well said. It put the blame on both parties and it shows the media as the real culprit in fomenting a sad story into a raging dangerous story. HATE SALES< SEX SALES<RACE SALES

always have braindead and dumflukes, but they go out fast.

unless have your own security , have a cop in your pocket … you are a victim waiting for a crime.

The police in my rich New Jersey town are cowards when it comes to black criminals. A car of four blacks were stopped and one jumped out running. This Hoodie tried to enter a car that was stopped but had to run. This Hoodie broke into a house with the police following and a lengthy fight went on inside the house. When the fight was over two of the police and the suspect had to be taken to an ER. The other three Hoodies had drugs in the car. The police only issued summons to the three. The police are terrified at arresting blacks for they fear loosing their jobs. The police will not protect you any more.

Geraldo has a point but on the other hand wasn’t it reported that it had been raining at the time Martin and Zimmerman met? Had I been wearing a jacket or sweatshirt with a hood and had to walk in the rain I would have had my hood on too and I’m an old white guy. But, I doubt I would have went out in the rain for tea and skittles either.

The msm always shows the picture of the boy when he’s nine or ten years old,we haven’t seen any recent pictures of him though have we? There‘s a reason for that and the msm propagandists know exactly why they don’t show recent photos of him.

I’m no fan of Geraldo but I agree with him on this one. Fair or unfair, hoodies do project a negative image. There is truth in the saying “first appearances are important”.

Doesn‘t matter if he’s being paid or not. The fact still remains that “hoodies” do project a negative image. Example: the recent mob violence of the self-proclaimed 99% in California. Businesses with broken windows, fires etc – all criminal acts. Local news footage shows a large percent of the protesters wearing hoodies to keep from being identified.

Not a fan of the hoodie fashion; don’t care for pants half-way up a guy’s backside; but there they are. I’m sorry for the tragic situation in Florida, but we must move on; the bottom-feeder libs are using this situation to distract. Let’s stay focused.

Tron, I’d say that goes with anything that becomes Gangster Chic (yeah, sarcasm intended) not just the hoodie itself. Whatever pieces of clothing or accessories they choose tends to become the “uniform” of the day. Next year, it could be just about anything. There have been reports of construction workers being attacked because of the wrong colored sweat rag hanging from a back pocket. Blame the gangster and the wannabes, not the clothing.
