The discovery of a massive World War II-era bomb means 45,000 residents of the western German city of Koblenz must evacuate so officials can try to defuse it.
The 10-foot, 1.8-ton British bomb was discovered in the Rhine river last week. Packed with more than 3,000 pounds of explosives, it is one of the largest unexploded bombs ever found and has the potential to demolish an entire city block.
City officials said Saturday the bomb will be defused early Sunday, requiring all residents who live within a 1.2-mile radius from the bomb site to leave their homes for the day.
The bomb was found last week alongside a 275-pound-bomb dropped there by U.S. forces during World War II, after the Rhine’s water level fell due to a prolonged lack of rain. A German smoke grenade was also found nearby, Stars and Stripes reported.
According to German media outlets, the bomb was sitting in about 16 inches of water, partially buried in mud, which made it difficult to access the detonation fuse, according to Stars and Stripes. Officials used sandbags to build a dam around it to gain easier access.
Officials said seven nursing homes, two hospitals and a prison are also being evacuated. Train and road traffic in the area, about 80 miles northwest of Frankfurt, will come to a halt.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 2:14pmThe Thames river in England was very low in the 70s. It made the cover of Time magazine. This happens from time to time.
There have been bad drought throughout history. The Roanoke colony was established during a bad drought. It died. The Anasazi may in part have been destroyed due to a very bad drought 400 years ago.
Let’s not forget that Saudi Arabia had a major river that emptied into the Gulf near Kuwait. Probably one for the 4 Rivers of Eden. The Sahara was a lush savanna just prior to the start of recorded history.
I bet you would be one to take your kids to the beach at the start of ebb tide & tell them the oceans were being sucked dry because of something men did.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 5:19pmGermany saw its driest November ion recorded history. Usually German Novembers (in most states at least) are dark, cloudy, cold and rainy. It’s not unusual to have straight 30 rainy days in November.
This year almost every day was sunny and in most states not an single inch of rain fell throughout the whole month. I personally have never seen anything like that, neither have my (old) parents.
And that’s the reason why many rivers are so low right now. And as Walkabout said: That happens sometimes.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 1:53pmThey are clearly evacuating WAAYY too many people. The bomb is only enough to destroy one city block, but they are evacuating a 1.2 mile radius? That’s ridiculous! Just cord off a 1000 ft. perimeter and let life go on in the rest of the city. And don’t bother evacuating the prison. For goodness sake, they are criminals! Maybe an explosion is just what they need. And the hospitals, unless they are in the blast radius of the bomb, evacuating them will be riskier than not. Evacuating a hospital is sure to result in some deaths.

If it were me, I’d be tempted to slap a little plastique on it and watch the fireworks! Damn fuse might be cracked and unreliable after all these years, not to mention the condition of the explosives after 65 years of ice and water! Posted on December 5, 2011 at 1:12pmI’m pretty sure they evacuation radius is designed around a route to remove the bomb. Having been in Koblenz while stationed not far from there I can say that it‘s going to have to be trucked out through neighborhoods if it’s anywhere near the town proper. If outside the town they really should just crane it to the center of the river with some semtex strapped on and detonate it under water. Worst that would happend is several thousand gallons of river get vaporized and a small part of the river would be deeper. The water itself would be the best barrier for detonation. Trucking it out exponentially increases the risk to property and people. Second observation is WOW……they must be having some kind of drought over there for the river to be down that much…….and lastly, after almost 70 years they really think there is viable explosive left in there? I seriously doubt it.

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 1:36pmBest thing to do would be to drill it with a robot and foam out most of the charge, then detonate the rest. Only safe way that does not involve putting someone in close contact. Sounds like the detonator package is under it. Even after 70 years, those pack were well protected and cased and probably still works. The best find would be if they found part of the outside case rusted through and a lot of the charge dissolved out over the years. No way of knowing.

Anyone of you “Righteous Among the Goyim” here know anything about the horrors of the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden? Anyone here know anything at ALL about WHY Germany was so anti-semitic during the 1930′s? If we can assign collective GUILT to the Germans, then why not to the Israelis? If you think that mad speeches by a nation’s leader is enough to assign collective guilt, then strap this one on:
“Our race is the Master Race. We are divine gods on this planet. We are as different from the inferior races as they are from insects. In fact, compared to our race, other races are beasts and animals, cattle at best. Other races are considered as human excrement. Our destiny is to rule over the inferior races. Our earthly kingdom will be ruled by our leader with a rod of iron. The masses will lick our feet and serve us as our slaves.” – Menachem Begin. (Israeli Prime Minister, 1977-1983)

If times are tough die to depression or recession, your country just lost a war, there has been endemic anti-Jewish feeling since AD400, mass immigration into a country is a problem waiting to explode.
“The emergence of new members in the European Union has revived anxieties that would have been familiar to anybody a hundred years ago — of migration of Eastern Europeans to Western Europe — when many Polish and Russian based Jews and other ethnic minorities were seeking to escape from the relatively repressive regimes where they lived.” -by Niall Ferguson, Historian

“Now France began an AGGRESSIVE policy of EXPANDING EASTWARD, first to the Rhône and Meuse Rivers, and when those borders were reached, to the Rhine.”
“It is important to note that memories of the Napoleonic Wars were still quite fresh in the 1870s. Right up until the Franco-Prussian War, the French had maintained a long-standing desire to establish their entire eastern frontier on the Rhine, and thus they were viewed by most 19th century Germans as an aggressive, war-mongering people. ”

I would never advocate it on a large scale because empirically it has been shown that it never works for any length of time not even a generation. Posted on December 4, 2011 at 9:01amThe harsh treatment of Germany after World War I was in part the result of democracy. Unlike Napoleon or Louis XIV, the victor governments in 1919 knew they would have to answer to a mass electorate, millions among whom had lost loved ones in the war as well as enduring suffering on the home fronts. Having goaded their people on in 1914-1918 with a promise to make the Germans pay, they could not turn on a dime and announce that all was forgiven, though that would have been the rational as well as the Christian thing to do. Conversely, had Germany won World War I, the peace settlement would have been just as harsh, as the 1918 terms of Brest-Litovsk proved.

They tried forcibly turn people culturally into Frenchmen. What do you think WWI & WWII were about. Let’s not go back to 1875. Let’s go back to 1648 for one of the major roots or WWII. There is awfully lot of war mongering to go around.
Come to think of it it was the French who invaded Mexico in the 1860s & oppressed the Mexican people.
Where did you all get your history? A crack Jack box?

You have twisted history…
The Inquisition of the Catholics Church had control over France for many years (100yrs?). They were FORCED to speak LATIN. Many of their words are latin today or have root words of latin just like most of Americas English has. So if the French have pride for their country it is ok to have French tough messed up a bit with that harsh sounding LATIN. It is their country and no one else’s!
American should only speak, write, and understand AMERICAN ENGLISH as it was until 15 yrs ago. We are going to make it official in the near future!
The American Union Army took time in 1862 and just showed up at the border of Mexico near the Gulf, the French turned away, and that was the end of that. Tough its is our victory that is the May 5th of Cinco-de-Mayo the illegal aliens celebrate in America for PRIDE of race. Mexico has never put much into the celebration down there and most do not celebrate it all.
Remember your are a guest of the country your

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 5:19pmYup, France invaded Mexico. Part of this was over money borrowed from other countries.
Borrowing money is goooooood! Other countries would never invade over indebtedness. They have never in past!
“The Franco-Mexican War, was an invasion of Mexico by an expeditionary force sent by the Second French Empire, supported in the beginning by the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Spain. It followed President Benito Juárez’s suspension of interest payments to foreign countries on 17 July 1861, which angered Mexico’s major creditors: Spain, France and Britain.” -wiki
“The rule of Emperor Maximiliano was blemished by constant conflict. On his arrival in 1864 with his wife, Empress Carlota of Mexico, daughter of King Léopold I of the Belgians, he found himself in the middle of a political struggle between the Conservatives that backed him and the opposing Liberals, headed by Benito Juárez. The two factions had set up parallel governments; the Conservatives in Mexico City controlling central Mexico and the Liberals in Veracruz. The Conservatives received funding from Europe, especially from Isabella II of Spain and Napoleon III of France; the Liberals found backing from United States Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, after they had finished their own Civil War in 1865.” -wiki

Your an idiot, dont ever put wiki out as an absolute source to me. It is easy and has a format I like, direct and to the point but only to the point of who entered the info. I always study their conclusion before I promote it as a truth. Sometimes I will offer it as referrence only.
You are wrong about the French in Mexcio and over looked the Latin influence their langage had from the Catholic Inqusition, I guess your catholic

So no French troops landed in Mexico in the 1860s? Maximillian was born in Mexico? Whatever.
One more thing. the Catholic church probably had some thing to do with the French speaking a Romance language, but so too did all the Romans that had settled there. They didn’t all die during the Migration Period.
Also the French passed laws outlawing the speaking of Non French Languages ion the last 100 years in the ALsace Lorrain region.

Report Post »you said:How racist of you. Hitler‘s rise was not anymore the German’s fault than it was the alliance of countries that intentionally created the adverse economic and political situation that allowed him to come to power.
So, instead of the people of Germany stopping this madman in his tracks, you think forgiving the crimes of Germany and the debt would have made a difference? You sir, have a liberal mind, and not such a good one. Germany is a nation of followers, that do not produce good leaders because of it.
Racist? You think Germans are a race of people?

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 2:48amStopping Hitler in his tracks like the bomb that went off an hour after he left a meeting in Munich about 1923? Stopping Hitler in his tracks when paramilitaries Communist & SA had more men than the military? Stopping Hitler in his tracks when the communists & SA goons fought it out in the streets & the SA won? Who was going to stop the SA then? The average person in the street suffering from hyperinflation was going to worry about stopping Hitler in the early 20s or worry about putting food on the table. Hitler in the 20s sounded quite a bit like many Europeans, many were anti-semitic. There was the Thule society for example.
