Giffords’ Congressional Friends Explain the Moment She Opened Eyes

It was one of the most touching moments of last night’s Tucson memorial service. In a few sentences that were not part of the evening’s prepared remarks, the president told the incredible story of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords opening her eyes for the “first time” shortly after he visited her on Wednesday. It’s a story that prompted raucous applause. And it’s a story that  grabbed headlines Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

On Thursday, two the people who were at Giffords’s bedside during that moment — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL) — spoke to Fox News about exactly what happened:

The pair also appeared on “Good Morning America”:

Giffords Congressional Friends Explain the Moment She Opened Eyes

Jake Tapper of ABC News talked with the congresswomen while they were traveling back to Washington yesterday. A partial transcript of that conversation is below:

SENATOR GILLIBRAND:
And we just were so excited, so we were telling her how proud we were of her and how she was inspiring the whole nation with her courage and with her strength. And then Debbie and I started joking about all the things we were going to do after she got better. And we were holding her hand and she was responding to our hand-holding. She was rubbing our hands and gripping our hands so we could — she could really — we knew she could hear and understand what we were saying and she moved her leg, and so we knew she was responding. And the more we joked about what we were going to do, she started to open her eyes literally.

And then you have to recognize, her eyes hadn’t opened — we didn’t know that — and so she started to struggle. And one of her eyes is covered with a bandage because it was damaged in the gunfire. So her eye is flickering. And Mark sees this and gets extremely excited. And we didn’t — I didn’t know what that meant. And so he said, Gabby, open your eyes, open your eyes. And he’s really urging her forward. And the doctor is like perking up and everyone is coming around the bed. And she’s struggling and she’s struggling and it’s a good — we couldn’t figure it out, maybe 30 seconds, where she’s really trying to get her eyes open, like doing this, this, this.

And then she finally opens her eyes and you could she was like desperately trying to focus and it took enormous strength from her. And Mark could just — can’t believe it. I mean, he’s so happy. And we’re crying because we’re witnessing something that we never imagined would happen in front of us.

REPRESENTATIVE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: Exactly. The only way I could describe the feeling that we had, that I had, was other than the birth of my kids, this was the most incredible feeling, to see literally your — one of your closest friends just struggle to come back to you, to come back to her family, to come back to her friends. I mean, we know how strong Gabby is and you could see all the strength pouring out of her to touch her husband –

SENATOR GILLIBRAND: It was raw courage. It was raw strength. It was so beautiful and so moving. And, I mean, as I said, we were in tears. We couldn’t believe our eyes how courageous she was and how much she wanted to talk to us, that she wanted to — she wanted us to know that she was with us a hundred percent and understood everything we were saying and appreciated it.

Some on the internet have suggested that the president’s — and the congresswomen’s — account is inaccurate. They point to an article in a local Tucson paper that on Sunday reported Giffords had opened her eyes. That article has since been removed, but a cached version exists. Still, there are other articles that hint at an earlier “eye-opening” event (here and here).

The Blaze has reviewed the news conference referenced by the now-removed article, and from what we can tell, the doctor did not blatantly say that Giffords had opened her eyes. Therefore, it could be the news article was removed for accuracy reasons. From what we can tell, then, reports that Obama fibbed may not be accurate.

One of the differences between conservatives and liberals that I have always seen is that coinservatives tend to view things through the prism of politics less than liberals.

I’m not seeing that reflected here very well.

Of course, maybe all the respectful conservatives simply are choosing not to post because there‘s nothing important to say except that we’re glad Rep. Giffords is doing well and we wish her speedy recovery.

I trust those with the power to do so can find the truth behind the conflicting accounts without our using this as a stick to beat our favorite dog.

Yes, I am happy for her and her husband and family. But I am disgusted over the circus this has become. The MARXISTS on the LEFT have been smearing and convicting Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck all week while Fearless Boob kept silent. Now he shows up at a campaign rally, uses Scripture in his speech which he trashes all other times) and we are all supposed to swoon. (Right out of Alinsky’s book – pick a target and uses any means to destroy.)

WHAT ABOUT THE THIRTEEN ( really FOURTEEN) that died at Fort Hood. Did they get honored like this???? They were just as worthy and even more so. Gabby sits in Washington, they were putting their lives on the line for us and the MARXISTS who want to destroy the country. Sorry, I can’t applaud the FRAUD-IN-CHIEF, he is such a liar, The speech writer‘s words were nice BUT THEY WEREN’T HIS!!!

All he did was show up, lie about her eyes opening for him – they were actually open on the weekend according to the doctor, and READ A TELEPROMPTER. That does NOT make him wonderful. He is guilty of dividing this country and encouraging factions and hate.

Why can’t the news media and polititions keep out and be respectful. Why do you wish to stifle the exhange of free speech? Although you may disapprove, people still have the right to speak their minds no matter the subject. For the love of God, who ISN”T happy that Gifford seems to be improving nicely?! (BTW, doctors said SEVERAL DAYS AGO that she was opening her eyes so last night was not the first time as Obama so disingenuously suggested). The world and its inhabitants have not come to a screeching halt because a Congresswoman was injured. Life goes on around her, anonymous families everywhere are mourning their dead, the country‘s profound problems continue to worsen and suddenly we should all stop in our tracks and pretend that Obama’s empty platitudes and atonal speech have healed the damage and inflammatory bombs he has relentlessly inflicted upon us? I think not.

To those of you who replied, you need to go back and reread what you wrote. The President gave a good speech that was meant to unite, but you pick it apart and proclaim that he has divided us. Sarah Palin gave a speech about self-righteousness and self-pity, but you all kvelled to that. She‘s America’s Sweetheart, and Liberals fear her because she’s so American! (I read that here just yesterday.)

For my part, I don’t swoon over the President. He is a politician, a bit more articulate and charismatic than most, but still to paraphrase Tom Clancy, when he isn’t kissing babies, he’s stealing their lollipops, and he keeps his options open. It’s very hard to lead when you have about 20% of the population who has already decided that whatever he does is wrong, and whatever he doesn’t do is wrong, and did I mention, everything else about him is wrong, too.

You are spouting anger and hatred; you are entitled to your own opinions, to be sure, but make no bones about it, there is very little that is Christian or compassionate in most of what has been written. This is the exact kind of vitriol that the pundits were condemning this weekend. And it isn’t the media who has exploited this or made it as much of a circus as you have chosen to make it on this blog. You can not govern if you will not compromise, you can not discuss if you have demonized the other side. You will fail, and the country will fail if you insist that it be only your way and that the Democrats and Liberals need to be sent out of the country or cut off from power. The Tea movement makes up about 20% of the country right now, Liberals are somewhere between 15-20% and we aren’t going away. We want the country to succeed, too and many of us view being Liberal as being a good American. And many of us can quote you whole sections of the Constitution, too, having read it and admired it for years before you ever discovered it. Oh, and I’m not some sunshine patriot, either. I will still be here in the heat of the summer or the cold of the winter in the service of my country. And the next time an issue comes up, I may take more of my own time off from work to go and visit the House and the Senate. I may have to go back again, soon to lobby against the repeal of the Healthcare bill. Last March, I was very well received, staffers shook my hands and thanked me for coming in. One staffer came out of an inner office to hug me. Tea movement people had been coming in all afternoon to complain.

What about the Republican’s, one of their leaders ( hill billy from Alaska ) isn’t even an elected official, they other one is a cry baby.
The Republican Party is like the stupid and the weapy leading the blind.

BTW, I know it’s gotta be killing you that all everyone in this country can talk about is that moment when President Obama shared the story about Gabby Giffords with the American people last night. A moment in history that will never be forgetten.

      @Wasilla

It’s “weepy”. If you’re going to sneer and condescend at others about their being “stupid” maybe you could try to do so without flagrant misspellings in your screed? It kind of undermines your claims, you see.

It’s such a shame that you have to parrot the media view and swoon on command about your Dear Leader. He made a decent speech, no question, but it‘s certainly not one of the defining speeches in our nation’s history. Swooning like you are doing is rather unbecoming and reflects poorly on your sense of history.

Yeah, let’s give political sniping a rest hear. This post is about her recovery and also whether accounts of it jibe together.

The Senator‘s account makes it sound like Gabby wasn’t responsive before, which is quite different from what I was hearing Monday. Perhaos what Obama recounted is correct. Perhaps not. It does seem that there is confusion in the reporting, so i wouldn’t blame anyone for mistakes in this area.

This is just all part of the plan to confuse society. Who cares what the President is lying about today, just know that this is a figment of some speech writers imagionation. If her eye (the one not covered by the bandage) opened or not, what the hell would that tell us??? I would like to know if her brain is going to recover? Really, just remember the cops are only minutes away when seconds count. Take care of your own self and be prepared. This crap is just the beginning of the seasonal change.

The pair either taped the Good Morning America segment or didn’t change clothes from the day before. I wish Congresswoman Giffords well and hope she can recover as fully as she can. I have been in her shoes (almost dying and knocked out in a hospital.) Even though she has opened her eyes doesn’t men she is cognizant of where she is or what happened, even if she is following commands. I don’t know if Obama was really there or not, when she opened her eyes, nor do I care. The fact that he may have falsely used the story to help his speech speaks volumes about his character. I am glad, however, that he called for all the BS and lying to stop. I wish the media would leave the families alone to heal, now.

“It was a defining moment. The fact you don‘t recognize it show’s the level of your intelligence.”

Please. It was a decent speech. Nothing more, nothing less. Worship of politicians is unhealthy. Defining moments are things like “We have nothing to fear but fear itself” or “I have a dream”. I’m not even vaguely dissing Obama, I‘m just reflecting on the overall historical context and this doesn’t fit into “defining” or even something most will recall five years from now.

Have a sense of perspective and stop letting political allegiance dictate your reality for you such that you take any non-glowing statement as a personal insult worth of hurling ad hominem.

Hope your day gets better. Slainte

actually it was Obammie’s moment for utilizing a catastrophic event for political gain. Always the campaigner. Gabby had been responding to commands for 3 days before and you dont respond to commands if your still in a coma. Give me a break people, how ignorant are you?

Gabby admitted to her husband in a whisper that she was pretending to be asleep until Obama left her hospital room: “thank God he’s gone”, she whispered after the prez walked out. When asked what she remembered from his visit, she whispered, “the smell of B.S.”.

It is my understanding that Gabby has been able to respond to commands (per every interview done with the neurosurgeon from the very beginning) and as reported by her aide who was with her before the paramedics arrived…she has ALWAYS been able to “respond” to stimulus…the doctors have been using an agent called curare (or something like it) to induce a “false” coma…they have told us all along that they have been bringing her in and out of this state from pretty much the day after her surgery…I have personal experience with this drug…they are SLOWLY bringing her AROUND and with each lowering of the dosage this is what you can expect (more like hope for) in order to see just where she is at…that being said, there is no reason to believe that Mr. Obama’s visit or the visit of her friends was not coordinated with her medication reduction time in order to make her more aware of their visit…I can’t think of a better way to “stimulate” her reactions than to have her surrounded by her friends…as far as the Obama thing goes…who cares? Unfortunately he lies so much that it is difficult to know where the truth begins and ends…that’s his fault…we need to continue to pray for her and pray for her husband that he will be able to be the support that she is going to need.

Some of you are confusing being conscious with opening your eyes. True, Giffords was never in a coma. She was kept sedated and regularly the sedatives were reduced to monitor her progress. The latter was done by giving her simple commands to which she responded positively by moving different parts of her body. However, up until Wednesday she had not been able to open her eyes, maybe because the entry wound was just above her left eye, and it caused trauma to both eyes. Perhaps it was not just a mechanical impediment (fracture/swelling), but a neurological challenge she was finally able to overcome. Of course opening her right eye was wonderful progress for friends and family, and we share in that joy. It is not clear yet whether there was permanent damage to her right eye. Hopefully not.

That said, the radical left has turned Giffords tragedy into a political crusade, witch hunt and all. Thus Obama‘s call for unity and civility five days into the radical left’s vicious assault gives me no solace. He could have undertaken his presidential duty on day one, from the Oval Office, where the lack of a live audience makes it easier for a POTUS to empty his speeches of political tone and cadence. We, in turn, would have been spared last night’s dramatization. As the French would say, “Tant pis.”

I urge everyone to call there congressman and press for sara palin to be an accesory to this crime. Could It could be possible that she helped the shooter? Think it should be looked into. The ends justifys the means, so what ever needs to be done to finish palins career needs to happen.

I was waiting for someone to throw up the anti-Christ reference. That’s sad and a bit mean spirited. This woman is fighting for her life at every step of the way. Her husband is exhausted and there are other people suffering over all of this.
Please, this has been overly politicized as it is, and we don’t need the hysteria of people accusing this woman of being anything but what she is.. the victim of a horrific crime who need our prayers and support.
