Giffords’ Husband Releases Statement: ‘Pray’

Giffords Husband Releases Statement: Pray

Giffords's husband Mark Kelly. (Photo: AP)

Astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of Rep. Gabbie Giffords, released a statement last night. In it, he thanks all those who have offered their condolences and explains how people can reach out and help:

On behalf of Gabby and our entire family, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the people of Arizona and this great nation for their unbelievable outpouring of support. Gabby was doing what she loved most – hearing from her constituents – when this tragedy occurred. Serving Southern Arizonans is her passion, and nothing makes her more proud than representing them in Congress.

Like all Americans, we mourn the loss of Judge John M. Roll, Christina Taylor Green, Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard and Gabe Zimmerman, a fine man and beloved member of Gabby’s team. We must never forget them, and our prayers are with their families. Our hearts go out to everyone injured yesterday; we hope and pray for their quick recovery. We also extend our thanks and appreciation to all of the first responders, medical personnel, law enforcement, and Arizona citizens who acted swiftly on Saturday and continue to assist our community through this tragedy. Many stories of heroism are emerging, and they are a source of strength for us during this difficult time. We are forever grateful.

Many of you have offered help. There is little that we can do but pray for those who are struggling. If you are inspired to make a positive gesture, consider two organizations that Gabby has long valued and supported: Tucson’s Community Food Bank and the American Red Cross.

Psalm 34: 1 – 22: I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the Lord, let the afflicted hear and rejoice. GLORIFY THE LORD WITH ME; LET US EXALT HIS NAME TOGETHER. I sought the Lord, AND HE ANSWERED ME; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. THIS POOR MAN CALLED, AND THE LORD HEARD HIM; HE SAVED HIM OUT OF ALL HIS TROUBLES. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, AND HE DELIVERS THEM. Taste and see that the LORD IS GOOD; BLESSED IS THE MAN THAT TAKES REFUGE IN HIM. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing. The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep you tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Turn from evil and do good; SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. The EYES OF THE LORD are on the righteous and HIS EARS ARE ATTENTIVE TO THEIR CRY; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. THE RIGHTEOUS CRY OUT, AND THE LORD HEARS THEM; HE DELIVERS THEM FROM ALL THEIR TROUBLES. The Lord is close to the BROKENHEARTED and SAVES THOSE WHO ARE CRUSHED IN SPIRIT. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; HE PROTECTS ALL HIS BONES, NOT ONE OF THEM WILL BE BROKEN. Evil will slay the wicked; the foes of the righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.

Isaiah 53: 4 – 5: Surely he (Jesus/Messiah) took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us PEACE was upon Him (Jesus/Messiah), and BY HIS WOUNDS (that Jesus took on his back) WE ARE HEALED.

Mark 11: 22 – 26: HAVE FAITH IN GOD, Jesus answered. I tell you THE TRUTH, if ANYONE says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea’, and DOES NOT DOUBT IN HIS HEART but BELIEVES that what HE SAYS WILL HAPPEN, IT WILL BE DONE FOR HIM. Therefore I tell you, WHATEVER YOU ASK for in prayer, BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED IT, and IT WILL BE YOURS. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

I pray these words from Scripture are a comfort to all of us who were touched by this senseless tragedy; especially those who were injured and those who lost loved ones.

Where the “LIGHT” is …. IT will overcome the darkness! This is not a time for a moment of silence. Our leaders need to come… on their knees to the throne of GRACE and lead our people to reach out to the face of GOD! HE is our help in time of trouble.
HE is our peace… Our comfort…. our strength,,,, our wisdom.

It’s sad that it takes this type of tragedy for us to not view people through a political lens. Before liberal or conservative, democrat or republican, believer or unbeliever we are people first. People with families, friends, and lives that are important. Let this inspire us to see each other as people first and foremost. It’s so important that we see each other as people.

Many prayer request have been made for Gabby and they will continue to pour in. I hope for her recovery. That extends to all afected by this event.

Try not looking for fault in everything he does. Hopefully you can see something other than politics, religion, or whatever and realize he is a person. A person effected by this like the rest of the nation. He is trying to deal with this emotionally as well as lead the nation in a difficult time. He’s a person first and foremost.

The entire nation is behind every family affected by this tragedy. Truly, the very worst of humanity exists solely to remind us of the very best in humanity. While we all struggle through these terrible times, we should let our hearts be lifted by the massive show of love in the face of hate. May God bless the lives of every family member and friend who has had to endure this senseless and inexcusable crime.

Also, let’s ALL remember this fact: Neither the far right, nor the far left, are to blame for this. Let’s hold the shooter accountable for his own actions instead of devolving into squabbling idiots looking to gain politically from the suffering of these men and women.

      @FOX
you’ve hit the nail on the head. This act was not based on political views – right or left. The shooter’s “rambling discourse & statements” are nothing more than self-invented justification (albeit insane) to feed his burgeoning delusions. In other words, any fire must have fuel to keep burning – and his insanity demanded the fire blaze on. Think Hinkley – his shooting of President Reagan was a culmination of his certainty that Jodie Foster would “like” him if he could just get her attention. President Reagan was the biggest log he could throw on his fire.

The same tragedy could just as easily occur anywhere else – from a tiny town in Maine to a huge city like Houston – with the “target” being anyone or anything. You just can’t predict crazy.

Unfortunately, both the right & the left will spin this tragedy for their own benefit – pointing fingers at the other side, gun control, immigration etc etc.

We pray every week for God’s protection on our country. We are in a bad place when our leaders are being shot. I haven’t felt this way since the days in the 60s when I saw JFK, MLK and RFK get assassinated.

Prayers were offered in Sunday church services for the victims and their families, and I as well will continue. As J. Fawcett above notes we should pray for our nation also. There have been many ministries asking for people to join in prayer for our nation. I recently had joined one in the fall for a 140 day commitment to prayer for our nation. Prayer works.
