Giffords Shooting: A Rahm Emanuel-esque ‘Crisis to Exploit’?

In 2008, then-White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel notoriously remarked that the nation’s economic meltdown was a prime opportunity for Democrats to push forward with their liberal agenda. “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” he said.
Only hours after last Saturday’s tragic shooting in Arizona that left 6 dead, more than a dozen injured and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords fighting for her life, a number of liberal commentators urged the White House to seize the crisis situation and turn a political profit for Democrats. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter even echoed Emanuel’s past comments and urged President Obama to turn “tragedy into triumph.”
This horrific event offers the president a chance to show leadership qualities that he’s inexplicably hidden away in some blind trust. The shootings and the resulting debate over the climate of incivility play to his strengths as a calm and rational leader. Just as Bill Clinton’s response to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombings helped him recover from his defeat in the 1994 midterms, so this episode may help Obama change—at least in the short term–the trajectory of American politics. …
Even if he makes a good speech, the president may find that the memory of the Tucson tragedy fades quickly. Sad to say, if Giffords had died, she would have been mourned and soon the conversation would have moved on. But Giffords lives, thank God, which offers other possibilities. We won’t know for weeks or months whether she can function in public. If she can, she will prove a powerful referee of the boundaries of public discourse—more influential, perhaps, than the president himself.
On Tuesday, Emanuel stepped forward to downplay his past comments. Now embroiled in a strong campaign to be Chicago’s next mayor, when reporters‘ asked Emanuel to elaborate on how this latest crisis shouldn’t go to waste, the Democrat seemed taken aback. “That’s not intended for this moment; it doesn’t apply to this moment,” he said.
Despite Emanuel‘s insistence that the wake of Saturday’s shooting is no time to exploit a shaken public, a number of lawmakers — from both sides of the aisle — are proposing new laws directly related to the tragic event, including new gun control regulations and restrictions on free speech.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:47pmI just read that gun sales jumped (particularly for the Glock) the day after the shooting…and, a jump in gun sales is typical after a mass shooting. Well, I guess a “crisis” can be exploited by people other than Rahm. After all, people are fearful that they might lose their opportunity to buy more guns…and these people know what is important!

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:47pmWhen you go back and look at the context of what he said, and then also look at peopel lile Hillary Clinton‘s quoting of this exact comment WITHOUT Rohm’s clarification, you can understand this is EXACTLY what he meant. The very day this happened, a Democrat announced she would introduce a bill further locking down 2nd amendment rights. Today we see a Republican offering to submit the bill, Rep Peter King of NY. Hardly a progressive, but a squishy conservative, appears to be helping progressives in this case.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:21pmDoes anyone believe Rahm? Does anyone actually believe anything that comes out of a Leftist’s mouth these days? Rahms comrades are going to exploit this tragedy to the fullest, and already are doing so. Leftist will do anything to achieve their goal of a Marxist State. They will lie, cheat, use others, and even kill as history has shown to achieve Marxism. They view Gifford as nothing more than another useful idiot. These are moraless, godless, unstable people we are dealing with. I probably wouldn’t flinch to categorize many of these leftists as operating on the same mindset as Jared Loughner, an unstable leftist himself. Funny thing is once they achieve that Marxist state, it is usually the leftist who are the first to be dissatisfied with it.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 5:06pmWhen you say “Leftist” are you refering to the politicians or just any ol person on the left? Just curious cause I probably would be considered leftist, even though I am a white mother and wife from a rural town, I play piano for my church, I love Jesus, and I support gun rights. I am NOT moral-less, godlesss, or unstable. I am also 100% self-sufficient; (yeah, I work for a living!). Oh, and I dont like Rham Emmanuel either. But I am an American and as an INDIVIDUAL I have a unique set of ideals that do not fit into Fox’s little box of partisan ideology. This sort of stereotyping is ignorant and unproductive

Leftist will do anything they have to including throwing their own to the wolves to achieve that goal of their beloved Marxism. They’ll lie, they’ll cheat, they’ll use each other, and they’ll even kill as history has shown us. Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:04pmLet’s face it! The responsibility for this tragedy lies squarely on the backs of 4156 voters that elected Giffords in Novemeber. That was her margin of victory and each one of the 134,000+ that voted for her needs to evaluate if they could have been one of the 4156 that could have prevented her re-election and therefore she would not have been there and 6 lives would have been spared. Obviously, this is absurdity but sometimes it takes it to recognize it.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 4:28pmMCP,
You need a reality check. I understand you are a “troll” but you have been around here awhile and you have said some halfway intelligent things in the past.
So let’s forget politics for a second. Everyone says things that can be misconstrued and taken out of context. Rahm was referring to the economic crises but what he said was loud and clear. That is fine. Likewise, I like Bachman, but I wish she had not said the things she did. However, she is simply using the same rhetoric the left is using. Obama wants to kill the Johnas brothers with a drone, right? The list of violent rhetoric from the progressives in power is staggering.
Fine
I understand that talk is talk. But are you not being hypocritical here? Especially when there is NO evidence that this shooter was acting on ANY rhetoric from anyone!!! Can you not step back and honestly see what has happened here? It is the same every time someone flips out, they always try to blame it on the right in the attempt to regulate speech. They want to shut Beck and others down. Why? Do you not understand that it is YOUR freedom they are going after? What happens when a Republican becomes president? Then the tables will be turned and it will be the leftist media that gets shut down. I do not want ANY president to have that power. I am glad MSNBC and the NY Times exist. If they can compete then let them, that is how it is supposed to work. Let the people decide. Can you honestly not see that?
You commented in another article that there is a lot of hate in here. Yes. You are correct. Just as there is a lot of hate over at huf-po or any other leftist site. Just as you are encouraging that hate by prodding the posters in here. So what? Do you want a country where people are not allowed to speak their mind? Because let me tell you brother, it may work for your advantage at this immediate time but the pendulum always swings the other direction sooner or later.
There are a few of you I like. You, walkwithme, broker, beckisnuts…I am glad y’all are here and I like when you speak your minds with intelligent arguments. But you lose credibility when you argue nonsense. Do you want a split, polarized country? Do you need to hate the other side? Why not try engaging in legitimate debate and showing us your side? Why not try to find some common ground? Yeah, there are many right wing idiots in here who are just as full of hate and rhetoric as some on the left. Why not rise above it? Why show that you are just as stupid as they are?
Just a thought, I know it is wasted…

It’s the chalkboard connection! There’s no vitriol or rhetoric from Beck, he‘s just making the connection and it’s the citizens who don’t like what they see and are rebelling against the liberal agenda. Of course, the left can’t come right out and admit, “Okay, you got us. We are trying to turn the US into part of one big socialist order.” Because they’d be gone in a heart beat. So they have to, as always, come up with a bunch of smoke and mirrors. So what else is new?
It’s always been the progressive liberals, not the conservatives who toss out incindiary comments the run and hide when the sh** hit’s the fan. They’re nothing but a bunch of over-grown bullies and thugs.

Posted on January 11, 2011 at 5:17pmWhen someone reveals the truth about themselves so completely as Rahm has, we should make sure they take the full consequences. Otherwise, like a snake, they’ll wriggle out of the snare they should be caught in. We’re dealing with genuine evil here, uncovered by the shooting. The responses of many are as evil as the shooting.
Americans recognize corrupt political hackery when they see it, and they punish the perpetrators. But if an investigation were launched, the ‘progressive’-crypto- Marxists would be found five times more guilty of inciting violence and hatred. They’re the experts on hate speech. These tactics are straight out of the Saul Alinsky/Stalinist/Leninist playbook for communist revolution; which Hillary Clinton based her graduate thesis on. The thesis is “sealed” from all scrutiny. I’d love to know what she wrote.
Chris Matthews interviewed Alinsky last year, and called him a “hero of the Left

There is one thing that is going on with the Progressives flap over symbols and symbology; along with the words and the way they are used. These are the camoflague the Progressives employ to distort and to distract, to decoy and destroy; Rush, Beck, and others of us who have seen through the camoflage, and those who find them on their own by daring to look underneath see it for what the real darkness and dangers behind them are.
Symbols and Words have power, and whoever can control the words (free speech v. limited speech; protected speech v. state-controlled speech for two examples) and the Symbols then has the power.
This is ultimately what it all boils down to = Take the controls, and you have the power.
That is what the Progressives really fear, the loss of control to you and me, the people of America and our understanding of what their symbology and words really mean. We have symbols of our own, the pledge, the flag, the constitution, and our own words (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) along with the greatest word and symbol wrapped up into one…
FREEDOM!!!

Posted on January 12, 2011 at 9:00amObama’s Rahm Emanuel is the poster child for “behind closed doors” and should be sitting in prison and not influencing/manipulating governments, whether state or national. He is one of those “enemies” (note to the moronic mainstream press, this is not meant to be a violent comment) that you keep close so you know what he’s up to.

Posted on January 12, 2011 at 10:25amLet’s see Clinton had the OK city bombing, Bush 9/11, and now Obama with this (and most certainly more to come)…….seems “funny” how a tragedy seems to show up just in the nick of time to help these presidents accomplish certain political goals…..hhhhmm. Don’t think things like this are staged, encouraged or facilitated in different ways (not that this shooting necessarily falls into this category but it has to give us at least pause). “Dial back the rhetoric”, calls for civility, the “kooky right” is calling for violence, we must restrict this kind of vitriolic rhetoric….. sure seems convenient for an administration that is facing mounting opposition and still has so much liberal crap to shove down our throats. Look back on now declassified documents about Israel’s 6 day war with Egypt and what was staged then to help US enter the war (although we didn’t have to because it ended so quickly) or the now released plans to stage a terrorist incident at gitmo during the bay of pigs to justify invasion of cuba….watch the other hand, what you don’t see happening is the most sinister of all.
