Gingrich Accuses Santorum of Being a ‘Big Labor’ Republican

NASHVILLE (The Blaze/AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Monday slammed rival Rick Santorum as a “big labor Republican,” accusing him of siding with unions over Memphis-based FedEx when the Senate grappled with a labor dispute in the 1990s.

Gingrich, the former Georgia congressman and House Speaker, is hoping to revive his struggling campaign in the South, and he tailored his message Monday to Republican voters in Tennessee. Although polls show a close race between Santorum and Mitt Romney, Gingrich challenged the former Pennsylvania senator and his conservative credentials.

“I think there are profound reasons that Rick lost the Senate race by the largest margin in Pennsylvania history in 2006 and I think it’s very hard for him to carry that all the way to the general,” Gingrich said. “Then he comes South and you take the case right here. He voted for the unions over FedEx. I suspect most folks in the state don’t know that. But in fact he was a big labor Republican in Pennsylvania and I suspect when you get to Memphis and you say to people, ‘Gee, this is a guy who wanted to guarantee that FedEx give into the unions.‘ Santorum won’t be as popular the following morning.”

Gingrich was referring to a provision in a 1996 spending bill for the Federal Aviation Administration that sought to help FedEx truck drivers in their efforts to organize. A group of Democrats held up the FAA bill to protest what they said was an attempt to help FedEx prevent its truck drivers from forming a union.

In 2006, Democrat Bob Casey soundly defeated then Sen. Santorum.

Gingrich said if Romney wins the Michigan primary on Tuesday, “you’ll see things start to clarify. If, as people expect, you end up with a Romney victory in Michigan tomorrow, I think you’ll see Santorum getting a very different second look.”

Bypassing Michigan and Arizona, the other primary on Tuesday, Gingrich said voters in Tennessee and his home state of Georgia could rejuvenate his presidential bid, which has stalled since he claimed a surprise victory in last month’s South Carolina primary. The former House speaker said a handful of states voting on the mega-contest day of March 6 could propel him to wins in Mississippi and Alabama next month and delegate-rich primaries later in the spring in Texas and California.

“Then all of the sudden, the same media which said I was dead in the fall, I was ahead in December, I was dead in early January, I was ahead in mid-January, all of the sudden they’re going to say … Gingrich will be back again,” he said during a luncheon with local Republicans.

Tennessee and Georgia hold nearly one-third of the 419 delegates at stake in the 10 states voting on Super Tuesday, contests Gingrich views as crucial to his struggling presidential bid. His campaign sees a potential backdoor opening if either Romney or Santorum stumbles, setting the stage for another showdown in a prolonged series of primary contests.

Later in the day, Gingrich was attending a rally at the State Capitol with former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson.

Gingrich was reaching for a strong showing in Tennessee even as a statewide poll underscored his challenges here. A Vanderbilt University poll showed Gingrich at 10 percent in the state, trailing rivals Santorum with 33 percent and Romney with 17 percent. The poll of 767 likely Republican primary voters was conducted Feb. 16-22 and had a margin of error of 3 percent.

“The race remains very fluid in this state and will likely continue to move in response to the primaries in Michigan and Arizona,” said John Geer, a Vanderbilt political scientist and co-director of the Vanderbilt Poll. “Still, this poll suggests the climb is steep for the speaker, but far from impossible in this unpredictable year.”

Earlier, Gingrich attended a health care forum at the law firm of former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker Jr., R-Tenn., urging Republicans to think of this time as “the beginning of the replacement debate rather than just the anti-Obama care debate.” Gingrich has said he would repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law if Republicans win congressional majorities.

Gingrich has offered a number of alternatives to the new health law, offering a tax credit to help people buy health insurance or the ability to deduct part of the costs from their taxes.

The former speaker returns to Georgia on Tuesday for a three-day bus tour around his home state, hoping to halt a month-long slide.

“My basic hope is to pick up some delegates virtually everywhere, pick up a lot of delegates in the South and Southwest and then with Texas and California, be totally in the race,” Gingrich said.

Where has Newt been? Santorum took most of his voters away & he never attacked him which was strange. It’s true though what he says about Santorum being a big spender & a union guy. Santorum was also on Hannity confessing he is behind the robo calls calling democrats to vote for him as he was for the auto bail out. He thought it was funny. If he is so conservative, why does he need their votes. Listening to JFK about separation of church & state made him want to throw up but since he was attending evangelical churches & pastors were actually telling the congregation to vote for Santorum, I can see why he would be ok that this is against the law. Romney, on the other hand, lives his faith & walks the walk. He also tithe & Rick, the big mouth, doesn’t. How Beck supports this guy is beyond me.

I’m looking forward to the Michigan primary tomorrow. First, to cast a vote for Newt Gingrich. Secondly, so that my phone will stop ringing. Romney people let the phone ring 12 – 15 times, and the robo calls are constant…all day long. I listened to many of them at first just to see what they were saying, and they are nothing but negative against his opponent Rick Santorum. Why would the country want someone like Romney, who is constantly attacking his opponents? It’s a disgrace! What his callers don’t tell us is what his record is, and what he will do to fix the country.
The Rick Santorum flyer that came in the mail was impressive. He has a wonderful family. I like Rick Santorum, but I don’t think he can beat Obama. The media is pushing Romney and Santorum, because they know that Obama can beat them both. Notice how they are ignoring Newt Gingrich, because they are afraid of him. They don’t want to give Newt any airtime if they can help it, because they want him to disappear from the radar screen so that they won’t have to deal with him.
I listened to Newt’s 30 minute youtube ad this past week, and I was so impressed. He knows what the Country’s problems are, and he has a solution for EVERY ONE OF THEM. He is our BEST HOPE to get our Country back. This is a crucial election, and we need to understand that. We need to take our Country back, and no one can do that except Newt Gingrich. Give Newt a chance!

In his book “Real Chance: From the World That Fails to the World That Works,” Gingrich praises the SEIU head, who remains a close adviser of the President Obama. Pitching the need for conservatives to respect organized labor, while simultaneously pushing back against some of Labor’s more cherished legislative goals, he wrote the following:

“Conservatives cannot cheer unions overseas and then be blindly anti-union here at home. There are legitimate historic reasons for workers to organize together, and there is a strong need for a healthy, competitive, union, movement that helps improve the lives of its members and the competitiveness of our country.
Andy Stern, the head of the Service Employees International Union, is the union leader who probably best understands the challenge of the world market and the need to make American union members productive in the face of world competition. Regarding who the media fears – I guess you have not researched polling data (link below). Gingrich consistently does terrible against obama. There is another candidate that the media ignores…Ron Paul does very well and even beats obama head-to-head. And that is considering that his own republican party likes to tear him down. Just imagine how well he would do with the support of the republicans. If you dont like romney – i suggest you vote santorum since gingrich has no chance of doing well in michigan.

There’s no “strong need for a healthy, competitive, union, movement that helps improve the lives of its members and the competitiveness of our country” today in this country. There‘s nothing unions have ever provided workers that can’t be addressed today by the voting process in a healthy two-party system. Unions have outlived their usefulness and have become a detriment to the worker because they’ve been completely co-opted by a corrupt Democrat party.

Newt wants YOU to vote Santorum in Michigan

I heard Newt Gingrich say on Saturday that he expects Romney will likely have a good day on Tuesday. This I believe is Newt’s subtle way of releasing his supporters to vote for Rick Santorum in Michigan where he is polling 8% and also low in Arizona. Newt is sagacious enough to know that while he cannot ask his voters to do this, he knows that Santorum dealing Romney’s campaign a mortal wound on Tuesday would be the best chance of making this a one on one race between himself (a strong conservative) and Santorum (a strong conservative).
Mitt blew $50 million of his own personal fortune in 2008 chasing his legacy. That’s a very significant percentage of his total estimated $250 million estimated net worth – and that’s not all liquid. From that we can presume that he is not about to make another such ridiculous gamble of the family fortune this time around as his smear campaign is currently being funded largely by “super-PACS”.
The bottom line is that if he loses Michigan, you will quite possibly see a substantial quantity of that PAC money disappear. That’s the way it typically works with PACS. They typically chase performance as their real motive is to be in the good graces of whoever they see as likely to be in power…

I disagree with your analysis on the Michigan stakes. As long as Romney comes close, he wins for two reasons. First, he was trailing in the polls there (badly) just a few weeks ago – so even coming close would be seen as the momentum going back to Romney. Second, Michigan rewards its delegates proportionally, so he’ll still be killing Santorum in the delegate count even if Santorum barely wins (especially since Romney is going to win here in Arizona which is a winner take all state).

Romney was supposed to have built up a huge delegate lead by now because super tuesday will not be kind to him. Romney was leading Michigan until the last month – so it is a big deal. Santorum went from 1% to 30%+ in just a few weeks. To make things worse, those states that Romney “won” were largely caucus states (even florida will be) which means Ron Paul took a big slice of Romney’s delegates.

    INTERESTING ISN’T IT:
When Gingrich was calling for Santorum to get out of the race, Santorum and fans were up in arms. Now as you can see below, the opposite is happening and people are calling for Gingrich to get out of the race, yet if they truly believed that Romney was a socialist, which he is not, then out of principle they would get out so a true conservative could win. Truth is, neither of them are better than Romney and they know it, they are all imperfect in their own ways and prideful to boot. That is why Gingrich and Santorum will battle it to the end, unlike what Romney did and got out for the betterment of conservative in hopes to take down the real competitors Clinton or Obama. Sadly McCain couldn’t seal the deal.

    TRUTH IS:
Gingrich is right on this one, Santorum is a ‘big labor republican’. He has always sided with the unions. He fought for them to increase minimum wage 6 times, and fought against right to work.

Romney is the only one to take on the unions. Look at his fight in Massachusetts with the Teachers Union, State Worker’s Union, etc. After he left Massachusetts, he took on the UAW during the bailout. Now they are attacking him. Take a look at the union rally against Romney this weekend: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/feb/uaw_attacks_romney.html

Romney on Taxes: ‘I Want to Make Sure We Maintain the Progressivity of the Code’

CNSNews.com) – Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said on Fox News Sunday that he wants to maintain “the progressivity” of the tax code so that as Americans make more money they are required to surrender increasing percentages of their earnings to the federal government in taxes.

Romney has a long record of opposing a flat tax–even investing more than $50,000 of his own money during the 1996 presidential campaign to run newspapers ads attacking then-presidential candidate Steve Forbes’s flat-tax proposal as a “tax cut for fat cats.”

On the Blaze, you either get stories all about Santorum, or stories about Santorum and other candidates. Their rule is Santorum must be a part of any candidate story. In this story, we have the evil Newt Gingrich being a mean meany to our hero Rick. It presents Santorum as a victim.

Just look at the stories, sheeple. All Santorum, all day. How many Romney stories this past five days? Two, both negative stories about his cars. Gingrich? This is the first, and he’s attacking their hero Santorum in it. Ron Paul? Not one. Santorum? Three to four stories EVERY DAY over the past five. All positive or portraying him as a victim. There’s two victim pieces today alone. And Beck’s radio show? It’s become a three hour infomercial for Saint Rick. Don‘t tell me I’m paranoid when you’re blind.

I picture you a 16 year old girl with a pin up of Romney on your wall. You are really sick and I think you need some help.

you have never posted a single thing about Romney that is questionable….. RomneyCare is fine for you… Government take over of healthcare at the State level… Maybe Government take over of everything at the state level is fine with you as long as he has the right hair and stutters.

Progressive income tax is ok with you because you are a 16 year old girl who doesn’t have a job yet and you live at home and can stay on your parents RomneyCare plan until you are 26… You don’t have to pay income tax because you are the 99% represented by 3% of Giddy School Girls selling cookies with Brown vests on.

Romney is a disaster….. I don’t know you but I would put some money that you are a Mormon…… Call me a bigot.. I don’t care that you are but like the Blacks supporting Obama they never give a reason… you say he is conservative ….. I just gave you two big reasons that is not true but you want to focus on something else….

      You don’t like the trash talking Obama but you like the Trash Talking Romney…. I say you are blinded by ♥ r ♥ o ♥ m ♥ n ♥ e ♥ y ♥ Love…..

I give you the best speech this man has ever made……..

Actually, Newt is out of the running, but he is not “out of the equation.” Sheldon Adelson, who does NOT want Santorum to be the nominee realizes this and has accordingly given Newt millions (more accurately, he has given Newt’s super PAC millions). Adelson has made billions in gaming — and he understands game theory. Newt seemes to hate Romney — but Newt’s remaining in the race could very well be the reason that Romney beats Santorum. Hate: it can backfire.

Tell me something I didn’t already know, Mr. Gingrich:

    ——————
“Santorum is also relying on the ranks of religious conservatives opposed to legal abortion. That marks a definitive philosophical arrival for Santorum, who describes himself as a “progressive conservative,” and who did not have a firm position on abortion – a flashpoint issue with the religious right – until after he began his campaign.”

this is a bad bad turn of events. Newt should be getting out of this race. If anything – he should not be fighting santorum because that will only ensure a romney victory. I have wondered if Newt was sleezy enough to do romney’s dirty work – i guess he is. Grinch is ultimately looking to be romney’s VP – bet on it

I agree that keeping newt in the race helps romney… the republican party seems to be split right now between romney supporters and “anyone-but-romney” supporters. This is evidenced by how each candidate has had a turn being in second place to romney. Thus, keeping at least two people running to split the “anyone-but-romney” vote is wise.

However, I think Newt is the last person to bring in conservatives. I would bet on a Romney/Rubio or Romney/Christie ticket.

Congrats on being a sheep that followed the lead of people that have driven this country straight into the ground.

Do you think the problems we face started with Obama? NO!!! It is from big government guys on the left and the right fisting our country. This is my point about voting for the clones or Obama, they are all the same. We need drastic change.

The only four issues this election should be about are debt, spending, wars, freedoms. Any other subject is a distraction and should almost be ignored. People wont care about who is giving who birth control if gas is 6 dollars, we have invaded another country, our economy collapses, and the government’s iron hand comes down on us.

Ask yourself where your candidate is on these issues. Is he honestly different from Obama?

Tron, you can continue to be a Paul basher, but he is gaining. He is a force to be reckoned with. Romney has to set his small crowds up with signs and stage the event. Santorum did get over 600 at his rally, but Paul packed in over 4000!
