Gingrich Answers Tough Questions about Statements on Race and Class at African-American Church in SC

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich was challenged about his past statements on race and class during a forum at a predominately African-American church in South Carolina Saturday.
While taking questions from a crowd of more than 50 people at Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the Associated Press reports that Gingrich faced tough questions about past statements he made regarding work ethic in poor communities, and his criticism of President Barack Obama as a “food-stamp president.”
Gingrich said his comments were misconstrued.
MSNBC reports on one back-and-fourth that the Georgia Republican faced:
“’You made a statement about kids getting free lunch and about them working as janitors to pay for their free lunch — if you could clarify that,’ a man asked Gingrich right away during the question and answer session.
‘Well I didn’t say anything about free lunch. What I said was in the poorest neighborhoods, if we could find a way to help young people earn some money, we might actually be able to keep the dropout rate down and give people an incentive to come to school,’ Gingrich responded. ‘My goal is to say, young people who start early who get a job, who earn a little bit of money, can help their family, they can help themselves, they learn the work habit.’
‘Good response,’ the man shouted after Gingrich wrapped up the answer.”
The Wall Street Journal reports that the skeptical and “occasionally hostile” crowd was made up largely of African-Americans, many of whom said they were Democrats.
“I’m sitting here listening to you about how you went around the country with Al Sharpton and everything, but, however, does that change your way of thinking about the blacks, the Latinos, the Mexicans, or what you said about the ghetto, people living in the ghetto?” the Journal reports Sharon Johnson asked, sparking a heated exchange. “Has that changed your way of thinking, or are you still as known throughout the state as a racist, as a bigot?”
“First of all,” MSNBC reports that Gingrich fired back, “I don’t quite know why you would say that, I never … what I’ve said is that we want everyone to be able to rise in all of America. We want everyone to be able to use English and be able to rise in the whole country.”
AP notes that the forum was a rare appearance for a presidential primary candidate before an audience unlikely to vote in his party’s primary. Exit polls indicate that blacks made up just 2 percent of those who voted in South Carolina’s 2008 Republican primary.
“If you’re going to lead America, you have to be willing to lead all of America,” explained Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond in regards to his candidate’s decision to host the event.
Following the question and answer session, church members prayed over Gingrich and his wife, Callista. The couple then joined the crowd in the church basement for dinner.
The Los Angeles Times reports that as Gingrich worked his way around the room where church parishioners ate fried chicken, barbecue hash, green beans and rice, he explained his unusual campaign appearance.
“As Americans, we need to talk to each other,” he said.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 12:44pmYou are right and you are wrong. The Northern democrats were the ones working for desegregation with a few brave southern democrats. Some republicans supported desegregation but the majority opposed (Barry Goldwater 64). Lyndon Johnson famously said of the civil rights bill that it would cause the democrats to lose the south. That happened. After northern democrats and some southern democrats supported civil rights bill the south became overwhelmingly republican.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:25pm@Randyco02 … Go even further back in history … Following the Civil War, the majority of blacks supported Republicans (even though they weren’t allowed to vote for many years). When Woodrow Wilson (D) was elected, he instituted segregation as a means to punish blacks for supporting Republicans. Harding and especially Coolidge (R), tried to put an end to racial injustices; Coolidge denounced lynching by making it illegal, but was unsuccessful in getting Congress to end segregation. (The KKK was a very large and powerful organization in both the North and the South during Coolidge’s administration.)
Herbert Hoover (a Northern Republican) and FD Roosevelt (D) turned back the clock to support segregation, and it was another republican, Dwight Eisenhower (R) who wanted to end segregation; but the Democrats in Congress wouldn’t budge.
Ironically, it was Lyndon B Johnson who fought Eisenhower’s agenda to end segregation. The only reason LBJ supported the Civil Rights Act was because he realized the black population was becoming stronger politically. Between the Civil Rights Act and LBJ’s Great Society, LBJ ensured that blacks would continue to be dependent on gov’t support, and therefore more likely to support Democrats in the future. Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:25pmThe Democratic dominance of the South originated in many white Southerners‘ animosity towards the Republican Party’s stance in favor of political rights for blacks during Reconstruction and Republican economic policies such as the high tariff and the support for continuing the gold standard, both of which were seen as benefiting Northern industrial interests at the expense of the agrarian South in the 19th century. It was maintained by the Democratic Party’s willingness to back Jim Crow laws and racial segregation.

Beginning in about 1948, the national Democratic Party’s support of the civil rights movement significantly reduced Southern support for the Democratic Party and allowed the Republican Party to make gains in the South by way of its “Southern strategy”. Today, the South is considered a Republican stronghold at all levels above the local level, and even there Republicans have made generally increasing inroads. The TOTAL budget actually went UP under the dynamic duo in the 90′s. Not since ANDREW JACKSON have we had a balanced budget. Not since the 1830′s folks. ZERO debt – 1830′s. While Newt is a well read man, his ability to be swayed off true conservative principles for populist theories and conjecture scare the hell out of me.
I think he would wax Obama in a debate and be far better than Obama as president, but he cannot attach Capitalism and expect the nomination. The fact that he got to #1 and self-imploded so quickly leads me to believe that he really doesn’t want to be president. He simply wants to be relevant. Well put. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment.
That, in a nutshell, is the conundrum we are in with regards to picking a candidate, and also the reason I fear Obama will win re-election.
This one is a family man who has revived companies; that one is articulate and a good debater; another is a strong believer in the family who believes in Americanism; yet another holds our Constitution in high regard, but has not been able, exactly, to articulate foreign policy with regards to how it relates to today’s violent world.
Yet, why should we be so choosey? We have an anti-American in the WH, surrounded by anti-Americans who profess anti-American views.
Look at Obama’s S Court appointees. Sotomayor is despicable with her “wise Latino” racist remark. That alone should have disqualified her. Did the Repub’s scream racism? No!
Look at the AG. Not proscecuting the NBP in Philly should have had him removed from his job.
Look at green jobs ‘Czar’ V Jones, another racist/Communist appointment.
Remember these things, whoever the Repub candidate is next Nov. Obama must go!

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 4:27amThe race card is old news… The KKK was a democratic institution but yet most minorities have been brainwashed into voting for the Dems. Why? Because they are for more money for social programs that demotivate the masses to better themselves through hard work. They “Y” generation has been conditioned into a “everyone gets a trophy for just being there” mentality; so there has been an elimination of competition. When a society becomes complacent, then there is no need to excel and try to make a better life, which, in turn, kills any and all hard work. Then, the society collapses in its own non-production and giving attitude. Socialism and communism only works until the other person’s money is expended. Without competition you create a false accomplishment attitude, and then that society doesn’t produce even the essentials that are needed. What happens then is famine, lawlessness, and death. I hate to quote a movie character; but Gordon Gecko said it best. “Greed is good.” There is a backlash of that greed though. “Snake oil salesman” will come out of the crevices. We as more informed people should be able to spot them and shut them down. Get your heads out of E! tv and actually pay attention to who is lying to you, and maybe we won’t have to deal with this downfall…

Genetics define every aspect of your natural abilities, forms many of your predilections, absolutely dictates your intelligence and physical aptitude. Race is the qualification of different genetic groups.

As for genetics (mentioned in an above reply), if the discussion is to be about that, then I guess the Progressives/eugenisits had it right. Perhaps “classes” should be arranged based on genetically superior traits such as height, weight, eyesight, health, intelligence, physical symettry, pleasing appearences and only those who are at the top of the genetic lottery should be allowed to have children, recieve expensive life sustaining medical treatments as they get older or hold “important” positions such as CEO or President? Doing it that way would ensure that we have only the best genetically predisposed in leadership positions.

In all case of genetics you are looking at predispositions rather than certainties. Meaning the actual presentation of a certain physical anomaly, such as cancer or mental illness is environmentally determined. There are different degrees of participation between nature (genetics) and nurture (environment) in all anomalies whether behavioral or physical. I assume you are focused on the former.

What racists focus on are aspects of behavior which are social in nature and not genetic (theft, violence, infidelity). There has never been any scientifically conducted study that has proven, absent significant social variables, that genetics are causational in socially unacceptable behavior AND isolated in any particular race. Twin/adoption studies with significant samplings actually prove the opposite.
Please show me a study that proves your point so that I can see it; do not give me a newspaper article or some write up, I want the actual scientific study complete with the statistical weights, measures and sampling structure, blinds, methods of measurement, accountability and means of compensation for sociological variables, as well as the methods used to weight the data so that I can peer review it.

Genetics, without a single doubt, 100% dictate your intelligence, and your other physical aptitudes, absent damages done by trauma or disease. It does not matter how much you personally don’t LIKE the facts that those of any given race share thousands of genetic traits that are unique to their group. All that matters is that it is true.

* Make securing our borders the top national security priority.
* Avoid long and expensive land wars that bankrupt our country by using constitutional means to capture or kill terrorist leaders who helped attack the U.S. and continue to plot further attacks.
* Guarantee our intelligence community’s efforts are directed toward legitimate threats and not spying on innocent Americans through unconstitutional power grabs like the Patriot Act.
* End the nation-building that is draining troop morale, increasing our debt, and sacrificing lives with no end in sight.
* Follow the Constitution by asking Congress to declare war before one is waged.
* Only send our military into conflict with a clear mission and all the tools they need to complete the job – and then bring them home.
* Ensure our veterans receive the care, benefits, and honors they have earned when they return.
* Revitalize the military for the 21st century by eliminating waste in a trillion-dollar military budget.
* Prevent the TSA from forcing Americans to either be groped or ogled just to travel on an airplane and ultimately abolish the unconstitutional agency.
* Stop taking money from the middle class and the poor to give to rich dictators through foreign aid.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 3:23pmJudson Phillips of Tea Party Nation just released the news that when he and others were laying plans for the Tea Party, Newt Gingrich came to them and offered his assistance and support. Read it here: http://www.teapartynation.com/forum/topics/which-presidential-candidate-actually-supported-the-tea-party-mov?id=3355873%3ATopic%3A1778399&page=1#comments
It was decided it would be best if no prominent names were associated with the fledgling effort so Newt has veered away from even mentioning much about the Tea Party.
The point is that Newt was and is in complete agreement with the Tea Party. Please share this with all who will listen, especially your friends in SC.

He will be the President that will reach across the aisle and make things happen once again in Washington. It took confidence and the desire to reach out to that congregation. It would be interesting to know how many people of that congregation will pull the lever for Newt!

Posted on January 14, 2012 at 11:37pmWhite/non-Hispanics represent 42.5% of the total population of people considered “poor” in America. So how in the H*!! can these people continue to pull the race card whenever the word “poverty” is used? Someone says “poor” and that automatically means “Minorities”? This is BS.
I am getting so tired of liberals and their ilk being allowed to lie to further their cause! It is about time these losers have their feet held to the fire. If we do not stand up to this crap we will forever be enslaved by it!
WAKE UP! STAND UP! They have waged a war, it is time to defend ourselves.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 12:07amM1A2_Tanker, dang right. It’s bs that Newt and Santorum are singling out blacks as the only people who are poor and getting food stamps. That’s nonsense. 50% of Americans getting food stamps are white. I don’t know why Newt and Santorum think that only blacks get government help, unless that’s just a bias they are appealing to. There are poor white people too! There are white people in this country living in poverty, living without health insurance, living but unable to feed their children enough to not stunt their growth. Newt and Santorum are all about cutting food stamps for the blacks so they won’t become dependent on the government and to make them take advantage of the opportunities in the United States. But what about the white people? That‘s what I’d like to ask Newt and Santorum.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 12:21amI agree with Newt, we should make children work for low wages while they are going to school. The children are right there anyway. And after we abolish Social Security and Medicare old people better wake up and start paying their fair share. Why should they take money away from me because they were to lazy or stupid to plan for their retirement. It’s not my fault they want entitlements because they think SS is owed to them. That’s my money not theirs. They can get a job at Walmart and pay into Walmart’s healthcare insurance. Free Markets! will solve this.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 2:31pm@JZS … where do you get your facts? It stands to reason that if the unemployment and poverty rates are higher for blacks, then a higher percentage of food stamps are likely being distributed blacks.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 6:48pmJZS, Your a moron, Plain and simple you are the “Liberal Ilk” I was referring to. You and the liberals are trying to play both sides of the number’s. Whites have the lowest poverty rate but we make up the highest percentage of the poor. You cannot sit there and say that conservatives are racist because they want to make large cuts to welfare programs. Both the numbers and the truth do not support your lies. Ive seen it first hand, Folks with food stamps are eating steak and shrimp and crab while those of us at the lower end without food stamps are eating hamburger helper and spam. These programs were meant as a stepping stone to help in a hard time, they were never meant to be a lifelong path. The only way to end this is to cut the programs all together. But next time you want to say its racist you’ll remember that Whites will be affected at a larger rate. So stuff it up your rear end!
Here is the “official” poverty rate for:
non-Hispanic Whites – 9.4 percent
Report Post »Blacks – 25.8 percent
Hispanics – 25.3 percent
Asians – 12.5 percent
All people – 14.3 percent

Posted on January 14, 2012 at 10:54pmThe best thing that Gingrich could do for his candidacy and for this country is to finally be the first GOP candidate to make the so called ‘black community’ a major part of his campaign. He is probably the biggest lightning rod who can do the best job of explaining that the Democratic Party and diversity, in general, has done more to hold blacks back than anything that the KKK could have done in the last half century since the civil rights movement supposedly taught us to look at content of character rather than color of skin. The race hustlers on the left have had free reign to demonize the GOP since that time. It is long past time for someone to address this issue if this nation of immigrants is to survive intact in the future rather than devolve to the old human instinct of looking out for ‘our own kind’.

Most people in China make less than 2 dollars a day, how can we compete. If we used more children in manufacturing and paid a dollar a day, we could get our jobs back and make america strong again. We should also abolish communist Social Security and make those people compete for jobs in manufacturing as well. There are 80 million people over the age of 65 and if we got rid of these safety nets for them, they could work and. we could compete with China and India again and restore america to our past when we were strong.

With respect to the rest of what your espoused….Newt drug Clinton AND the republican establishment to balancing the budget four years in a row AND pulled off a bit of welfare reform. That does not make one popular in the Progressive government we have…on BOTH sides. Newt was brough up on some 300+ ethics violations by none other than that shining example of Nancy Pelosi. Sheesh….and as a matter of legal and political expediency, Newt agreed to pay them off on one issue….$300,000….for which if he fought it and had to pay his one lawyer opposed to the establishement paid by our taxpayer dozens of lawyers. He would have prevailed. But, at a much greater cost. I am in business. I see frivolous lawsuits all the time. Cheaper to settle than to fight. PERIOD. Newt voted for bills that sometimes compromised a bit with NAFTA legislation, but, won a lot more for the conservative cause than he gave up. And with respect to Newt being for AMNESTY, you are either outright a liar or uninformed. Newt has an IDEA to be DEBATED in public about leaving some illeagles in our country….BUT THEY WOULD NOT BE CITIZENS NOR WOULD THEY HAVE VOTING RIGHTS. That scares the Progressive Democrats to death. Not to mention Newts ideas for our country to consider reigning back the progressive judges.
