Gingrich Climbing ‘Fast’ as South Carolina Voters Go to the Polls

AP
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Primary day at hand, fast-climbing Newt Gingrich told South Carolinians on Saturday that he was “the only practical conservative vote” able to stop front-runner Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential race. Romney acknowledged the first-in-the-South contest “could be real close” and prepared for an extended fight by agreeing to two more debates in Florida, next on the election calendar.
Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum braced for a setback and looked ahead to the Jan. 31 contest after getting the most votes in Iowa and besting Gingrich in New Hampshire. Texas Rep. Ron Paul made plans to focus on states where his libertarian, Internet-driven message might find more of a reception with voters; his campaign said it had purchased a substantial ad buy in Nevada and Minnesota, which hold caucuses next month.

(AP)
The first contest without Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out this past week and endorsed Gingrich, was seen as Romney’s to lose just days ago. Instead, the gap closed quickly between the Massachusetts governor who portrays himself as the Republicans best positioned to defeat President Barack Obama and Gingrich, the confrontational former House speaker from Georgia.
Romney avoided a run-in with Gingrich at Tommy’s Country Ham House, where both had scheduled campaign events for the same time. Romney stopped by the breakfast restaurant 45 minutes ahead of schedule. When Gingrich arrived, just minutes after Romney’s bus left the parking lot, he said: “Where’s Mitt?”
Earlier, Gingrich had a message for voters during a stop at The Grapevine restaurant in Boiling Springs not long after the polls opened: Come out and vote for me if you want to help deny Romney nomination.
He told diners who were enjoying plates of eggs and grits that he was the “the only practical conservative vote” to the rival he called a Massachusetts moderate. “Polls are good, votes are better,” he said.
Gingrich also said he would put a stop to federal actions against South Carolina’s voter ID and immigration laws.
Romney’s agreement to participate in Florida debates Monday in Tampa and Thursday in Jacksonville was seen as an acknowledgement of a prolonged battle with Gingrich.
“This could be real close,” said Romney as he chatted on the phone with a voter Saturday morning and urged the man to go vote.
Romney still has significant advantages over his three remaining Republican rivals, including an enormous financial edge and a well-organized campaign.
But with his Iowa victory now rescinded, losing in South Carolina would be a setback that could draw the primary contest out much longer. Just 10 days ago, Romney’s campaign team was looking ahead to the general election as it anticipated a quick sweep in early primaries.
By Saturday, state Treasurer Curtis Loftis, a top Romney backer, was on an automated telephone message attacking Gingrich’s ethics record in Congress, while Romney’s wife, Ann, was on a separate one urging voters to consider the candidates character.
“Look at how they’ve lived their life,” she says. “And that‘s why I think it’s so important to understand the character of a person.”
Before the ham house standoff that wasn’t, Romney stood outside his Greenville headquarters and undertook a new attack on Gingrich. He called on Gingrich to further explain his contracts with Freddie Mac, the housing giant, and release any advice he had provided to the company. He has said the contracts earned two of his companies more than $1.6 million over eight years, but that he only pocketed about $35,000 a year himself.
`I’d like to see what he actually told Freddie Mac. Don’t you think we ought to see it?” Romney said.
It was another response to pressure on Romney to release his tax returns before Republican voters finish choosing a nominee.
A day earlier, Romney had called on Gingrich to release information related to an ethics investigation of Gingrich in the 1990s. Gingrich argues that GOP voters need to know whether the wealthy former venture capital executive‘s records contain anything that could hurt the party’s chances against Obama.
Romney has said he will release several years’ worth of tax returns in April. Gingrich has called on him to release them much sooner. On Saturday, Romney refused to answer questions from reporters about the returns and whether his refusal to release them had hurt him with South Carolina voters.
Gingrich, buoyed by Perry’s endorsement as he left the race Thursday, has called Romney’s suggestion about releasing ethics investigation documents a “panic attack” brought on by sinking poll numbers.
The stakes were high for Saturday’s vote. The primary winner has gone on to win the Republican nomination in every election since 1980.
It’s very important, but it’s not do or die,” Paul told Fox News
Some of South Carolina’s notorious 11th-hour devilry – fake reports in the form of emails targeting Gingrich and his ex-wife Marianne – emerged in a race known as much for its nastiness as for its late-game twists.
“Unfortunately, we are now living up to our reputation,” said South Carolina GOP strategist Chip Felkel.
State Attorney Gen. Alan Wilson ordered a preliminary review of the phony messages to see if any laws had been broken.
Gingrich’s ex-wife burst into the campaign this week when she alleged in an ABC News interview that her former husband had asked her for an “open marriage,” a potentially damaging claim in a state where the Republican primary electorate includes a potent segment of Christian conservatives. The thrice-married Gingrich, who has admitted to marital infidelities, angrily denied her accusation.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:26pmFor all that the Tea Party stands for, please do not vote for Newt Gingrich. These are videos of him, in his own words praising the progressive FDR as the greatest president in the 20th century, not Reagan. He calls himself a ‘real politic Wilsonian’ after the progressive Woodrow Wilson, and praising the progressive movement as a greatest movement in our time. These are not just clips taken out of context, they are full quotes. We need to fight to keep progressives out of our government, for he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Remember that he also wanted a FEDERAL individual mandate as early as May 2011, on Meeting the Press. Then he changed his rhetoric after his campaign fell apart, which fell apart because of his praise of the IM and against conservative social engineering, most likely because of political necessity. Here he praises it in 2008. Remember also that he admitted that he had changed his book, removing the section on Global Warming, because of political pressure, this within the last few months. Even his scientist friend that wrote the chapter as his ghost writer, for his book, is speaking out against his change.
If these are true changes, why would they have changed within the last few months. Remember also that he has written and spoken on the importance of growing the government, starting with the state department, increasing it by 50%.

Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich have different ideas of what to do with federal bureaucracies. Ron Paul fights to rein them in and shut them down before they can do harm. Gingrich pads his personal bank account while they wreck our economy.
While Ron Paul was fighting environmental extremists, the out-of-control EPA, and the Soros-funded green movement, Newt Gingrich was filming commercials with Nancy Pelosi.
While Ron Paul was fighting government bailouts, Newt was saying he would have voted FOR them.
Don’t be fooled by the words candidates use when they are running for office. Look hard at their records. Ron Paul’s record is one of true limited government, anti-Washington, D.C. conservatism.
Newt Gingrich has a long record of liberal appeasement, flip-flopping on key issues, and lobbying for insider millions.
THEY CAN’T WIN against Obama:
• Newt Gingrich is not on the ballot in Missouri and Virginia and did not qualify for all of the delegates in Tennessee.
• Rick Santorum is not on the ballot in Virginia, Ilinois and Washington, D.C., and did not qualify for all of the delegates in Ohio and Tennessee.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 5:09pmWe all want to love a guy that tells us what we want to hear. Newt’s got all these great ideas that look great on paper, but he doesn’t have the vision (or self-discipline) to separate those that work from those that are disastrous or simply foolish. The academic in him gives him the arrogance to think whatever he thinks up on any given day is going to work – without ever giving it an more due-diligence in terms of really thinking through things. He’s an academic, after all. There’s a reason why some people stay in academia, while others venture into the real world and become productive.
So, which is “really” worse I ask? Having a RINO institute basically no change for the country, which after 4 years would force conservatives to explain to the brain-dead why republicans do no better than democrats? Or, is it a better long-term solution to counter-intuitively hope Obama gets 4 more years to destroy the nation further – which means the people that pay the bills in this country will really get a wake-up call, and most will finally understand which type of “republican” is going to get crap done.
I mean, to think Newt is the answer when he’s one of the people that has placed America in the position it is in, is really, really frightening thinking.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 5:10pm@ MikeM1969, Listen here you ignoramus. Ron Paul is not “weak” on foreign policy. If you are meaning that he does not want to start wars or maintain palace like embassies and bases on foreign land, then you should correctly say that he doesn’t agree with your policy of neoconservatism or imperialism. Which ever you prefer is fine. But to say that the man who actually wants to follow our Constitution, allow other countries to operate as sovereign, and wants to ensure the national defense in a proper manner is somehow “weak” merely shows your arrogance and how little you think of other people’s intelligence.
I am a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and I support Ron Paul. Freedom, liberty, a strong national defense, a smaller federal gov’t, a budget that decreases our national debt, and an end to fiat currency.

So, you take away the facetious foreign policy issue and Ron Paul wins hands down. I’d ask those with the ability to think rationally and reasonably to re-assess what “foreign policy” really is.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 6:24pm@hauschild I agree that defense spending and military spending are different. We armed Saddam Hussein in Iraq to fight Iran, then we fought Iraq. We armed and gave billions to Qaddafi, then we spent millions on drones to bomb his country, and then aided the radical Muslims to oust him. We helped Lebanon have elections, and then they elected Hezbollah, who is now bombing Israel. We give billions of dollars to Pakistan, who has a nuke, and then we find out they’re hiding Osama bin Laden. We sold a bunch of F-15s to Saudi Arabia, though women can’t even drive there, and fifteen of the nineteen hijackers were Saudi Arabian, and they have as by the neck with their oil (drill here!). Exactly WHAT THE HECK ARE WE DOING? This is insanity, appeasement, corruption, and lunacy.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 6:27pmGetting crazier on this blog than it is out there going through the primaries. Not so sure that either Romney or Gingrich will win out for the nomination. Santorum? Maybe, Maybe not. Ron Paul? Doubtful, but not implausible either.
One thing for sure, it is a good thing for Gingrich to give Romney a run for his money, and Romney does have a lot of that, but the most important thing is to play this out, for the Romney people were just about to pack up their bags and head home, thinking they had the nomination locked up. Very foolish, and more importantly, we do not want or need, nor can we live with an establishment candidate.
By dragging this out well into the spring, with no clear front runner, we may be preparing or paving the way for the real candidate who may yet jump in to take on and defeat Barack Hussein Obama. Who could that candidate be? Let the games which have begun, play out. There are forces at work behind the scenes that neither the establishment nor the elitists are aware of nor capable of combating once these forces are loosed and brought into play.
What governs these forces and from whence do they come? Suffice it to say that concerted, committed, ignited light forces are being engaged through fervent, effectual prayer of righteous men and women, and He who is being petitioned has been long awaiting, and His answer is on its way. Patience and trust are indeed great virtues, especially when the real One’s aid and assistance is being sought.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 6:31pmHow can we leave out oversea spending in any discussion regarding fiscal conservatism, when our economy is tanking, our dollar is loosing value, our debt is ever increasing, and the continuation of our Republic is hanging by a thread?
What’s wrong with having Congress write a Declaration of War, as per the requirement in the Constitution, and then having our Commander in Chief, fully authorized and commissioned, to fight our enemies, win the war, and come back home? What’s wrong with not wanting to engage in nation building? I say this, if we want to go to war with anyone, we better be willing to leave our enemies in the freaking stone age, and then come back home. Why should we use our money, troops, time, and other resources to rebuild the homes of the enemies we just defeated?
Father of the Constitution, James Madison, said, “The power to declare war, including the power of judging the causes of war, is fully and exclusively vested in the legislature … the executive has no right, in any case, to decide the question, whether there is or is not cause for declaring war.”
George Washington said, “The constitution vests the power of declaring war in Congress; therefore no offensive expedition of importance can be undertaken until after they shall have deliberated upon the subject and authorized such a measure.”

What is amazing, and more likely than not, not in a good sense, is the 700 million plus spent on the newly built and newly occupied US Embassy in Baghdad, the largest and most expensive ever built. Lot of money spent and will cost a lot more money to finance with 1000 employees and ancillary expenses.
What does this say? Obviously we will be maintaining a large presence in Iraq – very large with no doubt a large troop and weaponry contingent to protect the embassy in a very volatile area of the world. There is definitely much more than meets the eye that is being withheld from the American people – a bit disconcerting to say the least.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:49pm@TheTruthPrevails I would have ignored your comment if it wasn’t for the falsehood of it. As President, Paul wouldn’t be able to make anything legal. Only Congress has the power to make laws. This year I will work hard to elect a TEA party congress, and I‘m pretty sure that their agenda won’t include make heroin legal nationwide. Paul doesn’t even believe Congress has the power to make drugs legal. He believes in something called Federalism. Paul actually wants to protect our union of free and independent States, and honor the ninth and tenth Amendments. Paul wants to repeal those federal laws regarding private drug use by individual Citizens. This will not legalize any drug, as each State will still have the Power to ban, prohibit, restrict and regulate whatever “drug” they want. Many federal judges have agreed to this position, for these minor non-violent drug crimes consume too much time and take up too much resources otherwise needed to deal with real federal crimes! They clog up our federal courts and slow down our judicial process.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 3:02pm@JB – Too bad Glenn Beck has not thought this through. If he did he would be supporting Ron Paul.
Glenn fails to apply his anti-progressive mind set to our international policies.
1) If it is wrong to pick my pocket to give it to non-producing people, why is it ok to take my money to give to socialist and islamic religious countries.
2) If it is wrong to tell US citizens how to eat and how to pray, how is it ok for us to tell people in other countries how to act.
3) If it is wrong to interfere in US commerce, why is it ok to interfere in foreign lands?
You have no right to spend $1 Trillion dollars on the military in 140 overseas bases, joing civil wars in Libya, Iraq, Afganastan, protecting the riches countries in the world and creating a US Govt that is so powerful that this progressive pro-military policy has spilled over into loss of the right to trial, loss of the right to privacy, govt control of the internet.
Wake up Glenn. Your military policy is big govt progressivism.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 4:39pm@Buck Shane Thanks. I appreciate the kind words. I’m convinced that in order to restore our Republic, and preserve liberty, we must have a healthy debate and discussion regarding the most relevant or important issues and topics confronting our nation. I believe that most of us on here probably are much more in agreement than disagreement. This year, we must be able to find common ground, unite and elect a TEA party Congress. We must get TEA party candidates to run! Division or unnecessary factions will be detrimental these coming years, if we wish to preserve what little we have left of our Constitutional Republic. We as fellow Americans, should be able to communicate with civility and respect. And, if possible, provide substantiated research, in our discourse with others. Sharing information and educating others benefits us all, and is much more rewarding. Name calling, or personally attacking others will only divide us, and distract us from the real problems. I try my best to follow such principles and values, and on occasion break a joke or two, or attempt to be humorous but not vicious. As a Christian I always keep in mind that my conversation must be honest and with good intention. Hopefully, we’ll all learn to unite our efforts, and together, achieve the same freedom our founding fathers earned and fought for, for all of us to enjoy and protect. God bless.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 3:17pmI actually consider many so called “social conservatives” today to be nothing more than social progressives, not to be confused with social liberals. Social Conservatives used to advocate for personal responsibility and for the Government to not interfere within our private lives. They actually understood that the only thing standing in the way of the people restoring and achieving a moral and religious society, was Big Government dictating what was a moral and religious society. Social Conservatives used to advocate for our personal lives, and choices therein, to be governed and guided, independently, by our families, our churches, and our local communities. Social Conservatives used to oppose any centralization of Power dictating to private Citizens how to run their own lives. Social Conservatives well knew that Government, or rather, the Politicians therein, were susceptible to corruption, greed, and failure. Social Conservatives advocated for limited Government, for they well knew that to avoid a large scale effect of any negative result due to bad Government, the actions and efforts of Government would have to be minimized and further divided, thus avoiding nationalism or communist policies being implemented. Social Conservatives understood the necessity to be able to easily and quickly reverse or reform any mistake committed by Government, and thus avoided national or centralized change. What we have now, is almost quite the opposite.

No matter who wins, we’re still going to lose people. The sooner you realize that the sooner we can get back onto the road of recovery. Until them keep on fighting to get a “TRUE CONSERVATIVE” to replace Obama.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:52pmSadly, it’s starting to look like that next November, we will have a choice between Obama the Communist, or Newt the Progressive. The only difference between them, will be the speed at which we all become slaves…..unless a third option becomes apparent……Civil War anyone?
Report Post »SychinLegacy
Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:57pmWon’t be much of a civil war if any. With NDAA the progressive regime can incarcerate any potential “threats to the state” without any questions asked. It‘s funny how most people don’t even realized that our government just created their own Gestapo. Heck the Blaze even did a story a few weeks ago about how the FBI is now using predator drones against civilians.
It really is pathetic how few people have learned their lesson. So many fools come to this site posting “GUYS IT DOESN’T MATTER AS LONG AS WE BEAT OBAMA WE WIN YEAHHH“ or ”WE HAVE TO VOTE FOR (insert progressive) BECAUSE HE HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO BEAT OBAMA YEAHHH”.
I mean how many times do we have to scream Obama is not the endgame. You can beat Obama and replace him with another progressive and guess what, we still have the EXACT SAME problems to deal with. Except with even less time now because you fools thought that defeating Obama would suddenly cure us of every problem and we would all live happily ever after.

Report Post »Ron is 76, and will be 77 in August
Ron gets elected with a young, smart, conservative as his VP
Ron suffers a severe stroke in his first months of office and is rendered unfit for service
He graciously steps down as president and offers the presidency to the younger VP
The socialists go berserk and file lawsuit after lawsuit against the new president claiming is not suited to be president
The House looses all credibility as a result of the new president’s failure to pull the conservatives together after suffering extreme personal financial loss due to all the lawsuits against him
The socialist controlled Senate pulls out all stops and files bill after bill just to gum up the system even further
Nothing gets repealed, nothing gets done and our money flows faster out of our pockets and into DC
The country collapses in two short years and another socialist experiment fails
Ron Paul gives it up three years later while trying to speak at a rally held in his honor and ends up diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, in a bed somewhere in Texas …

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:44pmNeocon establishment still holds sway. Only people that demand principle and truth as the primary factor, will decide to investigate Mr Paul, the only one that rejects lawlessness. Mr Gingrich and the others, are the most stylish with their words, especially when they talk about how they have ‘changed’ and are now going to ‘do better’. Mr Paul is simplistic with his words, and he has no need to explain away any violations of our constitution. These neocon politicians can wax eloquent while they are violating the law, and do the same when covering over the reasons why they violated the law and their oath. They are flatterers, and people love the evil speaking of flattery i.e., Hannity, Beck & crew, O’reilly, Coulter, Malkin, Ingraham, Bolton, Huckabee, Palin, Limbaugh, Levin, etc.. These people are good at entertaining their listeners about how great they are, while being too proud to admit that they were not fighting the lawbreakers consistently, like Mr Paul, but upholding them for their own benefit.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:43pmDo we really spend this much time and energy vetting the character of POLITICIANS? Its as if we want to select the one who has done the best job fooling us into believing that they have led their lives as ordinary, principled people. I like Newt, skeletons aren’t skeletons if they exist for all to see. Romney strikes me as the GOP’s Al Gore, not quite as ridiculous, but lacking heart in the same way. Support Gingrich, win in 2012.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 1:42pmThe way I see it if the guy makes it so easy to lie and cheat on his wife(s) how much easier will it be for him to lie to the American people? But it is more than a simple morality ethics thing. Gingrich claims to be the most conservative candidate when his record proves different…again another lie that he seems to believe. I for one cannot put my vote behind this guy.
Report Post »As conservatives we can agree on one thing….getting rid of the mistake in the White House and denying him a second term to finish off America. Many polls have shown by far Romney is the candidate that can beat Obama. He may not be the perfect conservative candidate as everyone has their own idea of what the perfect conservative candidate would be. But as long as polls show he will beat Obama, he gets my vote.

Posted on January 21, 2012 at 2:00pmI agree. I don’t understand why people close their eyes to a man with a long history of having no personal honor or integrity. Having an affair once is a mistake. Twice is a pattern. All can be forgiven but forgiveness and TRUST are not the same. Also, do Americans really want a woman who has an affair with a married co-worker as their FIRST LADY?? In my eyes, any woman knowingly and willingly conducting herself in that manner is no lady. The title would need to be changed to First Madam.

Obama and Romney have so much in common
1. Both grew up in wealthy families and attended private schools. They never struggled for anything in their lives.
2. Both were born to fathers who were FOREIGN BORN (Kenya versus Mexico).
( and I read that even Romney‘s mother was born in Mexico and if true at least Obama’s mother was born in Kansas. Where are the ROMNEY BIRTHERS????????????????????
3. Both men were born to POLYGAMIST fathers. (Muslim nad Mormon)
4. Both men supported TARP (Bail out of private banks) and thus do NOT believe in the Free Market
5. Both men BRIBED Iowa voters by supporting Ethanol subsidies which a TAXPAYER BAILOUTS for PRIVATE FARMERS and NOT Free Market.
6. Both Men agree that ALL GASOLINE CONSUMERS should have their FREE MARKET rights thrown under the bus and FORCED BY GOVERNMENT to put Ethanol into their gas tank whether they want to or not.
