Gingrich Doubles Down on Romney Criticism: ‘Obama Is Going to Laugh at Him’

Since his poor showing in the Iowa caucus, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich seems to have adopted a much more aggressive and critical approach towards his GOP rivals.

And it’s starting to show.

“What approach do you take tomorrow night [at the GOP debate]?” George Stephanopoulos asked the former Speaker during an interview on Good Morning America.

“I’ll take the approach of talking to the American people about real solutions,” Gingrich responded.

Stephanopoulos quickly turned the conversation to Gingrich’s strategy for competing against Mitt Romney. It seems that conservative talk show hosts aren‘t the only ones curious to find out whether Gingrich’s decision to stay in the race was motivated by a desire to “destroy” the former Massachusetts governor.

Gingrich responded by cataloging multiple examples where Romney had either proposed or advocated legislation that many would consider antithetical to conservative orthodoxy.

“I think as people look at his record and then imagine him debating Obama, Obama is going to laugh at him,” Gingrich said. “Obama’s going to say, ‘I developed Obamacare based on Romneycare. I even brought your staff into the White House in order to develop it.’”

“We have to look at what kind of a choice do we want for the country,” Gingrich added.

Watch the “GMA” interview (his Romney criticism starts at 1:48):

Although it seems Gingrich’s strategy involves portraying Romney as a “Massachusetts moderate” who cannot defeat Obama, the former governor still leads the polls by a wide margin.

“In a new poll released today by ABC News affiliate WMUR, 59 percent of New Hampshire’s GOP voters think Romney is the candidate most likely to beat Obama,” writes  Stephanopoulos.

“Only seven percent think Gingrich can do better. Is it a hard sell?”

Gingrich replied by saying that Romney’s numbers in New Hampshire are not a surprise, but he’s going to continue to campaign there because “this is where the race is this week.”

“This is the place to point out how big the gap is between a Reagan conservative and a Massachusetts moderate,” Gingrich said this morning.

Indeed, many analysts suspect that Gingrich will focus on this point and this point alone during Saturday’s GOP debate–and it might get ugly.

The definition of conservatism is the support of minimal, gradual change. “True” conservatism would be to preserve everything as it is, with no change at all. Therefore, “radical ideas” are inherently unconservative.

Newt’s Right! BHO hopes Romney is who runs against him. Romney-care is not only the model for obamacare, Romney does exactly what BHO does. Depending on who Romney’s talking to, he says what he thinks the people want to hear. Romney Doesn’t Speak From His Own Integrity.

Too many folks love to be “seduced” by someone who sings the purty song and speaks the purty words, which plays right into the BHO / Romney modus operandi. BHO was elected by those who refused to get answers to the questions and allowed themselves to be swept along by all the purty words: “I Promise … I Promise … I Promise …” ad nauseam.

BHO WAS NOT VETTED BY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! As a result, America’s potus is the most un-American and Corrupt Sociopath on Planet Earth.

I don‘t know if Newt’s America’s candidate or not. What I do know is, Newt Is A PitBull! Romney knows it and Romney’s scared to go one to one with Newt. However, tomorrow’s debate will be very interesting, because, even tho it’s not one to one, America just might see Newt shake all of the fake faces off of Romney. If It Gets Messy, So What! America needs to see the truth about all of the candidates from the candidates’ own mouths, not the pseudo-truth from the mud-slinging BHO and his minions and his lemmings love to do.

Go Get Romney, Newt! And Don’t Turn Him Loose Until America Hears What We Need To Hear!

Wrong. People like to say that but it isn’t true. Is that why he stood up against same sex marriage in Mass. even going so far as to, as a citizen, sue the legislature to allow an amendment on the ballot defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Is that why as governor he took on stem cell research, even though Massachusetts was all for it and because his wife and he were promised it could help find a cure for his wife’s MS. After he decided that he couldn’t support abortions he went so far as to push the study of adult stem cell research, especially in the last election. He constantly spoke out against abortion and was praised by the SBA organization for being a great help to the pro-life movement. Praised by many religious leaders in Mass. that they were convinced that he was completely sincere and working to make a difference towards life.

Is that why he was drafted to run for governor of Massachusetts to fix their economy and cut subsidies. Citizens for Limited Taxation drafted him to run, right out of the Olympics because he would make a change in Massachusetts and they praised him the whole way through.

      GRASSROOTS,

Everyone always likes to forget that RomneyCare was a conservative initiative started by Heritage, Gingrich, and many other Conservative groups. (Which up until May 2011, Gingrich agreed with the individual mandate). The mandate was much different when Romney and Heritage designed it. It started off as “Pay for your insurance or pay your own bill.” That is libertarian in nature, no government intervention, self sufficient.

RomneyCare and ObamaCare is quite different. RomneyCare was a mandate to buy private insurance, if you couldn’t afford it you could get a voucher for your own private insurance. ObamaCare is government insurance. RomneyCare is a state initiative which is constitutional under the 10th amendment, ObamaCare is federal takeover of our health system which is not constitutional. Romney introduced catastrophic insurance to make it affordable to all, which was pushed by Conservative talkers to be part of it. ObamaCare wouldn’t allow it and made extra regulations pushing up costs. RomneyCare was created to deregulate the insurance industry making it easier and less expensive. (Sadly that was not accepted) RomneyCare is about self-sufficiency, ObamaCare is about power. RomneyCare had an opt out when it was designed, ObamaCare doesn’t… unless you are a friend of Obama’s.

You want to say that RomneyCare is socialism, look at the system we live in right now. Everyone pays for others to get health insurance. Romney tried to get rid of the fr

This OWG Group control much of what happens in the world. There is only one person who can beat Obama and make him look like a fool is Gingrich. He is the only one with the most experience; the most qualified and the most ready to thoughtfully tackle the country’s problems and set us on the path to the next American Century. Other than Ronald Reagan, you can’t name a political figure who has done as much to concretely advanceconservative ideas than Newt Gingrich has. Yes we need radical ideas.

The only Radical Idea’s that will heal our land is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

      1. Fear caused the National Debt.
      2. The world war of New Idea’s vs. Old idea’s caused the National Debt.
      3. The battle of Communism vs Capitalism caused the National Debt.
      4. Greeeed & selfishness caused the National Debt.
      5. The People’s lust for OIL caused the National Debt.
      6. The President Elect is chosen and is a reflection of The People.
      7. Big US Government was and is created by us. We the People.
      8. We the People have forsaken the 2nd greatest commandment in our local communities: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBORS AS YOURSELF..
      9. Like Reagan said “Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem”
      10. I helped create the problem of big government now it’s time to do my small part. LOVE.

It’s very possible the whole world could go into utter chaos if we elect a President who radically cuts foreign aid especially in the middle east. Our dependance on Foreign OIL hurts us BIG TIME. All the crap we buy from CHINA fuels the crisis. Drilling in our own country is only a short term solution.

Local sustainable resources seems to be the only long term solution and must be educated world wide!

I just don’t understand why people are gushing over Romney like a 13 year old girl having a crush on a rock star. Romney’s record as Mass. Gov. doesn’t even come close to comparing to the Tx. Gov . Perry’s record. Romney was a one term Gov.and didn‘t run for another term because he didn’t think he could get re-elected. Perry has been the Tx. Gov. for 11 years, a state that is economically head and shoulders better than any other state in the union (I am not from Texas). People are moving to Texas to better themselves and their familiies a state with an economy Perry created, they are not doing that in the embarrassing state of Mass. If we want someone to do the job, Perry’s the deal, if we want a “rock star” Romney’s your guy, but if one takes the emotion out of it and look at it like a business person, Perry’s the guy, maybe we as a country are so given to making decisions based upon emotion we can not settle down and think like a business person, after all Obama was an emotionally elected Prez. That guy had no meaningful executive experience to speek of, yet he got elected, maybe we are too emotional to really THINK.

Your accessment of of Mr Perry needs to be re-evaluated.
Mr Perry is reaping the rewards for which 1) Bush established in his governorship, combined with the 2) strangulation of liberal states through taxation of Corps which would chase MANY companies to Texas and 3) an ever increasing illegal workforce keeping wages at a substandard equal to the employment.

Perry is what we call here in Texas as a two-stepper. He has HAD every opportunity to do what is necessary to twart this flow of illegals to Texas, he has blamed it all on Obama. Obama is guilty for his lack of interest, but Perry could enforce laws for prosecuting companies who hire illegals. IF company managers that hire illegals had fear of PRISON time there would be no issue.
Remember Perry supported Gore by working in his campaign. I have no doubt Perry would successfully run a farm and manage the dept of ag as he did here in Texas, and that is noble, but he couldn’t manage a meat market and i fear from his staff here in Texas, he would not delegate authority to a strong cabinet.
Romney has holes in his armor just as they all do, but he demonstrates what is necessary to lead this country… fiscal management on a large scale.
Furthermore, only because Mr Paul is using the constitution as his campaign format, do not think any of our Repub candidate will do anything less than sustain its great prinicples. Perry, Romney, Santorum will restore and observe its law and rule.

So its racist to say I am a Republican? Is it racist to believe in Economic freedom? Are you saying it is racist to dislike someone who disparages our great nation whenever opportunity or foreign leader shows up? Is it racist to want less government regulation, more private enterprise, less taxation, less dependency on welfare, more opportunity to create/find better employment, more respect for people who work and pull their own weight and some, and less respect for those who don’t? Is it therefore racist to believe that America’s best days are ahead, especially if we can effectively remove more and more of our government from the equation? So you mean to say that it is racist to believe that our country and indeed the world is a safer place the stronger America gets? Am I to believe from you that it is also racist to believe we have sufficient natural resources to be able to ensure our energy independence and therefore have the ability to reduce the power currently granted to Middle East and even South American countries who are increasingly anti-American in their political ideologies? Is it racist to feel America was duped into trusting a man with the highest office in the Free World, who clearly had no clue what he was doing? Is is racist to say there should be zero ambiguity regarding a President’s birth status? Of course not! It’s only racist to use the word “racist” to describe someone who doesn’t share your enthusiasm for BHO. Go home and rethink your life.

You mean better still, not the Mormon! What other reason is there for supporting Santorum over Mitt? As if Santorum‘s rhetoric and voting history in his single term in the Senate is somehow on equal footing with Mitt’s actual accomplishments. Doers for president not talkers.

No, that is NOT what I mean. Fine by me if the nominee is a Mormon. I just happen to prefer the Catholic. You say “As if Santorum‘s rhetoric and voting history in his single term in the Senate is somehow on equal footing with Mitt’s actual accomplishments. Doers for president not talkers.”
Maybe you should look a little more into Santorum’s experience. He was a two-term Congressman from 1991 to 1995 and a two-term Senator (1995-2007). While a Senator, Santorum was chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, making him the third-ranking Senate Republican from 2001 to 2007.

Chuck stein it’s very interesting to note that at one time Newt Gingrich was the most powerful man in the House of Representatives and to counter that in the Senate Rick Santorum was third in line. Both of these men brought tremendous change to both houses of Congress, the establishment threw Newt Gingrich’s out because he upset their applecart, and they did likewise by not backing Rick Santorum why. It‘s all about the applecart that the establishment don’t want upset and the two proved to produce change. If Newt Gingrich is this evil person new world order type Council foreign relations whatever why does he not have a percentage total of at least 40 or 50% backing him he would be there logical choice, for when they throw Obama out then they could just replace them with Newt. Could it be that he really did have a conversion and now was thinking of his children and grandchildren I do not know, but as most label him I would think he should be the front runner for their cause and not Mitt Romney.

      @ Reform
I see Santorum as more starkly different from Romney (than Newt) for several reasons. First, the biggest hit on Romney is that of “flip flopper.” The man changed positions on some things — some important things — especially in 2005. Was it for politial purposes in anticipation? Was it because he realized that he had been wrong? I really don’t know, but I like to think that he saw the better side of the argument and, like a rational person would, chose the right. In any event, 2005 was 6 years ago. Newt’s flop flops (global warming, for example) are much more recent. Also, ethics do count (1.3 million from FannieMae (or was it FreddieMac) for history consulting work does not pass the smell test). Santorum does not have any “flip flop” problem at all — many do not like stances he has taken (e.g. on “gay” marriage), but he does not waiver. Gingrich would make a very good Chief of Staff for President Santorum. Many see the nominee as either being Romney or Santorum. By hitting Romney with negative ads, Newt is helping Santorum.
Also, I have no proplem with this being a long nomination process — I even hope that the nominee is not decided upon untill the 3rd vote at the convention (the winner-take-all rules for later primaries strongly militate against that, of course).

Funny how you and Ron Paul supporter always say that but have no proof. But on the contrary, the media, Obama, and organizations like MoveOn have already spent millions to attack Romney and keep him out of a primary win. Yet conservatives are smarter than that. Those attack ads won’t stop our resolve.

Funny how the media, minus conservative talkers, aren’t really attacking Ron Paul anymore. They did it for one week, when he was a possible front runner, now that he isn‘t they don’t see him as a threat to Obama. Plus don’t try to say that Ron Paul is neglected by the media, he denies so many offers to talk on their shows, including conservative talkers. He created that rumor/scandal by denying appearances. For example, Hannity, Levin, Beck all have been denied. So has CNN, MSNBC, and they mention it every time he denies them.

Romney is constantly attacked by the liberal media.

Romney’s official site mentions nothing about our rights with exception of the 2nd (which he’s flip flopped on), and Rubio voted for the NDAA. Make your candidates address these issues if you support them and detest Obama that much, otherwise enjoy reading their books. That is if they don’t get burned by Chairman Obama.

Obama is scared to death to run against Romney. His record of accomplishing nothing but political disaster and saving us from future problems that never existed will be obliterated by Romney’s successes and actual, quantifiable accomplishments. As for those Democrats buying into the Anti-Romney propaganda machine labeling him as a moderate RINO ( I don’t care that Romney himself used the word Moderate, he was running for office in Massachusetts, he had no choice but to use that word, and in that state, the word moderate actually meant as “Far Right as Possible”) he will get some of those votes as well. All pros for Romney.

Don’t get me wrong. Paul, on some issues, is dangerously correct and we need to steer that direction, but he would do us more good as the President of a Conservative think tank than the actual occupant of the oval office.

Vote Paul all you want during the primaries, but if there is even one reasonable synaptic relay in your frontal lobe, please vote for the Republican Candidate during the actual election.

R&R, You should listen to Recovering as he is right. Paul always tried to do the right thing in Congress but there are just too many progressives that do not like Constitutionally sound legislation. I am afraid that Americans are being lulled into the same old thing that happens every election. Maybe going back to real freedom is too scary for Americans as they are too lazy to think about being truly free, it takes hard work. I know this, if Romney, Santorum or Gingrich are elected, our country is toast, Guaranteed. What happens to peoples brains when a progressive lies to them? Is it the shock that causes the brain cells to stop working? Listen to Glenn, this is his site, you all nust respect his opinion don’t you? Listen to what he says about Romney: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcAYJqG0NEI

Listen to what he says about Gingrich here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wyx9tw0TEPM

If a candidate has to move to the center, left or right they are lying to you, don’t you get that? There is going to be a world wide economic crash no matter who we put in, it is inevitable at this point. Do you really want a progressive in there when this happens? Do you? Give me a break. Why do you people have such a hard time listening? Did you notice who got the largest percentage of Independents in Iowa? Paul. He can also get 30-40% of disenfranchised Democrats. He is actually the most electable going up against Obama.
