Gingrich Excoriates ‘Elite Media’ for Making Limbaugh the ‘Great National Crisis of This Week’

NBC
Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich on Sunday blasted the media for zeroing in on radio host Rush Limbaugh’s comments about a Georgetown law student this week rather than focusing on President Barack Obama’s job performance.
“I am astonished at the desperation of the elite media to avoid rising gas prices, to avoid the president’s apology to religious fanatics in Afghanistan, to avoid a trillion dollar deficit, to avoid the longest period of unemployment since the great depression, and to suddenly decide that Rush Limbaugh is the great national crisis of this week,” Gingrich said when asked about the controversy by NBC’s David Gregory on “Meet the Press.”
Saying there is “no debate about access to contraception,“ Gingrich said there is instead ”this weird situation where President Obama apologizes to Islamic extremists while waging war against the Catholic Church.”
“You have an issue here of whether the government can coerce the Catholic Church, not just into contraception, but into sterilization and abortion, something I don’t find any reporter wants to talk about,” he said.
Pressed on whether Limbaugh was right to apologize, Gingrich acknowledged he was, but countered by saying: “Do you think the president owes an apology to all the men and women in uniform who he frankly abandoned when he apologized to religious fanatics in Afghanistan?
Gregory asked whether Gingrich could “appreciate the view of those” who see the situation as “some sort of war on women.”
“Nobody’s blocking anyone from having access to contraception,” Gingrich said again. “No one. The young lady who testified can get access to contraception. Nobody said she couldn’t. The question is should a Catholic institution, or for that matter, the Ohio Christian University which is a Protestant institution, which is a very pro-life institution, which is now being told it will have to pay for abortion pills….This is the most fundamental assault on religious liberty in American history despite every effort by the elite media to distort what it’s about.”

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 3:31pmVery BIG of Newt especially given Rush’s knife in the back supporting Santorum in Florida. I am very disappointed in how all of AM radio has treated Newt…cannibaslizing one non Rmoney option to the next making sure none prosper…but what is happening to Rush is a threat to all our first amendment rights. It is sickening to see the federal government oragnize a lynch mob against a private individual for calling somebody a slut given the serious problems facing this country. Let the people deal with it themselves…but this was Washington DC politicians and their media machine organizing boycott campaigns . They can get Rush to apologize, but they can‘t find that billion dollars stolen from Corzine’s clients at MF Global.

The demogogues always pick the low hanging fruit, and you are it–able and willing to do the bidding of the very foot that lies across your neck. You are forever unable to see it, for your brains are but file cabinets of extraneous, contradictory factoids which you regurgitate on command and cannot recognize them for what they are. You do the bidding of the rich, for the rich, and it is you they destroy and make into nothing but serfs. Pity the ability to think critically escapes you, but it does. And there is much much scientific evidence to support that conclusion. But you have been taught that science is bad and to be ignored. Must you always go to your masters for advice? A whole new world would open up if you were just brave enough to read beyond the latest talking points.

Here’s a guy who was convicted and fined (and kicked out of office) for violating Senate rules, explaining morality to you. Did the Pope annul his first two marriages, or is committing adultery in the eyes of the Catholic Church? Posted on March 4, 2012 at 4:40pmAbsolutely! Medicine in general has to take a good hard look at the destruction of mental health care in this country–it’s your future. First professionalism was marginalized by the the acceptance of “therapists” with out advanced degrees (MD, PhD) which was insurance driven because the care of these disciplines was more expensive. Then a governmentally driven presumption that psychiatric illness was really just a difference in perspective, leading to over regulation which not only drove up costs but further devalued the discipline. As part of this the definition of treatable psychiatric illness was diluted to include, for example, antisocial behavior, substance abuse, mental retardation (technical term–check the DSM), straight up neurological problems, and just plain bad choices, Around this point “Mental Health” was changed to “Behavioral Health”. At that point there was permission to tear the whole discipline to pieces. Add a complete failure of social services to actually live up to their promises, an almost magical investment in the “s-word” on the street making hospitalization virtually a medico-legal imperative the minute a patient says the word ‘suicide’ thus making psychiatric practice the dumping ground for every social problem possible, and in the process making services less and less available for genuinely ill patients. And make no mistake–patients with psychiatric illness are the sickest on the planet–both psychologically and physically.
Report Post »woebegone
Posted on March 4, 2012 at 5:06pmThe truth is every discipline is slowly being undermined, psychiatry was just the most vulnerable, not because it isn’t valuable, not because good work doesn’t get done–but because it‘s successes and failures aren’t measured by an anion gap, wedge pressure, tumor load, or viral load. Most important is that the stigma associated with actual mental illness makes the stigma associated with AIDS look like a laughable blip on the radar. So psychiatric successes aren’t visiting boardrooms or marching in the streets–and even if they wanted to, any clinician worth their salt would discourage it. The simple truth is that psychiatric illness is as fundamental a fear as dying, or losing a limb, or developing dementia. Rightfully so because the truth is the minute do any of these things you are either gone or anxiety provoking.
Report Post »But before you think that this is just a rant, which it is. The truth is that these same insanities are leaking into other areas of medicine, perhaps the most obvious being Emergency Medicine. Now that psychiatric services are disappearing a new “dumping ground” needs to develop, for the last 15 years have used psychiatry for this, which contributed to the destruction of psychiatric services (for that matter for that period too Social Service agencies have used psychiatric services that way)–where will these people go now? How diluted will your admission criteria become to accomdate social failures, how do you think your reimbursement will be i

Six months before the November vote the GOP was riding high on the The successful Iraq conquest, the Contract for America, Newt Gingrich, and Rush Limbaugh. Gingrich and Limbaugh were the voices of conservatives.
Now, the left knew – correctly – they would have to silence Gingrich & Limbaugh if they were to stand a chance, and they set about on their first real campaign of personal destruction, aiming at these 2 conservatives.
They ‘got’ Gingrich by spewing a slew of ‘ethics’ charges – ALL eventually proven false – but effective enough in silencing Gingrich for the duration of the election season (note the similarity with what they did to Palin).
They ‘got’ Limbaugh by charging him with the heinous crime of becoming addicted to his pain medicine. That was enough to take him out of a place to be effective.
But Gingrich & Limbaugh have arisen from the dead and are again effectively rallying conservatives (along with Beck). Note how they have already targeted and ‘gotten’ Beck and are now going after Limbaugh.

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 2:50pmThe largest donor to a SuperPAC supporting Ron Paul is Peter Thiel, the sort of ultra-wealthy, super-national figure Paul and his supporters love to hate.
Thiel is also a member of the steering committee of the Bilderberg Group, the elite, invitation-only conference that’s the frequent subject of conspiracy theories.
“They probably get together and talk about how they’re going to control the banking systems of the world and natural resources,” Paul said in 2008…

Report Post »I see your point about extremes; however, sometimes I believe there has to be a line in the sand on certain issues. Sometimes one cannot compromise when a compromise would mean a continued violation of the Constitution and the eventual collapse of this nation. I expect this from both parties. Both have utterly failed in a host of ways that compromise all of us no matter what political side we take.

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 2:34pmEnough with the war talk!
The Republicans are not waging a “war on women.“ The Obama administration is not waging a ”war on religion.”

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 2:53pmYou don’t have to be a Paulista to believe that “war” is a serious business with one meaning and one meaning only, armed hostilities against another sovereign state, and that there is only one properly constitutional way of going about it, by a Congressional declaration of war. If we go to war against Iran, let’s have an extended debate this time, and do it the right way.
Most of our ongoing “wars” are the product of hyberbole such as Gingrich is using here. The war on drugs. The war on cancer. The war on terror. How are those working out? The alleged war on religion and the alleged war on religion are the same, Terrible misuse of language for political advantage.

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 2:59pmExactly Draco, people on both sides use extreme language to take things from a discussion to A WAR!
Which of course leads people to take extremists sides and nothing actually gets accomplished.
