Gingrich Makes it Official: ‘Today I Am Suspending the Campaign’

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday officially ended his campaign for president, but did so without an endorsement of Mitt Romney.

“Today I am suspending the campaign,” Gingrich said during a 23-minute speech in Virginia surrounded by his family, exactly one week after sources first said he would drop his bid.

While Gingrich has said he would back the eventual Republican presidential nominee — and was expected to throw his support behind Romney — he stopped short of offering an official endorsement of the former Massachusetts governor.

“The question I’m asked sometimes, is Mitt Romney a conservative?” Gingrich said. “My answer is, compared to Barack Obama?”

Gingrich frequently criticized and drew into question Romney’s conservative credentials on the campaign trail.

“This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan,” he continued. “This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist president in American history.”

Following Gingrich’s announcement, the Romney campaign said in a statement: “Newt Gingrich has brought creativity and intellectual vitality to American political life.”

Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul are the only two candidates remaining in the race; Romney leads the delegate count with 847 to Paul’s 80. 1,144 delegates are needed to clinch the GOP nomination.

Gingrich said the campaign had been “an amazing year” for him and his family.

    Mitt Romney will ABSOLUTELY be the republican nominee. There is NOT some vast conspiracy to lie about the delegate count. There will NOT be a brokered convention. Romney was NOT made the nominee by some secretive “establishment” – he is our nominee because of the MILLIONS of American voters who picked him.

    Seriously, leave the conspiracies to Art Bell and the midnight Coast to Coast AM crowd. Time to face reality – the American voters picked the other guy – NOT Ron Paul. Get over it!

      Romney is a phony. He has no support, just money to try and buy votes. Paul has a huge grassroots following knocking on doors, giving money in small donations, and SHOWING UP AND TAKING THE DELEGATES that are supposedly Romney’s. He is nervous but can’t start campaigning heavy in the last 14 states because it would destroy the illusion of his “assumed nomination. Only 4 of these states are winner take all and Paul will bill getting most of the delegates in the other 10 despite what straw poll crap the media shows. We are the REAL R3VOLUTION, all other political movements are disorganized and a joke. Why do you people even proudly support Romney. HE is OBAMA!!

      Paul is winning the majority of delegates in many states. He already has MORE than enough to get on the ballot for nomination in Tampa.
      If the delegates in Tampa do not listen to the Paul delegates, and they go ahead a nominate Romney, then Romney is going to LOSE. Even if he picks a Rubio or some other RINO with nice hair.

      Here’s why. Romney doesn’t have the appeal to Independents, Libertarians, and recovering Democrats that realized they got more of the same with Barry. Romney can’t even get the “R” base excited after millions and millions of dollars spent, and all the free airtime on Fox.

      Paul polls BEST among those 3 parties, but you wont see that on Fox News. The most recent public policy poll in Montana, shows Romney getting TROUNCED by Barry, while Paul beats Barry by 8 percentage points.

      Nominate another McStain part 2, and you will see 4 more years. Mark my words.

      Many people who have principles and an IQ over 90, are not going to fall for another “Goldman Sachs vs Goldman Sachs” election. Hell, we don’t even know if our votes are being counted with these rigged electronic voting machines.

      ron paul can get all the delegates he wants but if he doesnt turn the tide in the popular vote, the party will FIND A WAY to make romney the winner. Ron Paul winning Texas would be a huge step. Texas is his home state – there is no excuse not to win it.

      If Ron Paul cant win texas in a one-on-one matchup, then it doesnt matter how many delegates he shows up to the convention with…the party will revolt

      It really does not matter how many delegates Ron Paul has at the convention. Unlike the other Candidates, Dr. Paul has said he is going to run the race until the there is a 0% chance of winning and we will keep fighting along side him for Freedom and Liberty until and long after that sad day.

      @soybomb315 – If he doesn’t win Texas than it is a 100 percent rigged. So let me get this straight.. Romney can get hundreds of thousands of votes but he can’t get that 100 of thousand to become delegates for him? And I don’t want to hear how Ron Paul Supporters are more organized. If you got a multi billionaire candidate that can get a 100 plus votes but can’t get delegates to sign for him makes it seem like the voting system is rigged.

      throughout this primary, people like gingrich, perry, and santorum attacked romney in many ways that were below the belt and usually in desperate ways. However, ron paul refrained from any of that and any criticism of romney has been based on fact and romney’s principles.

      Now that it is just romney and paul, the republican party and the media wont give paul a fair shake out and pretends the primary is over (ron paul blackout). Ron Paul’s whole strategy was to be the last one standing against romney. He has made it and now the media/establishment has turned their backs on the primary.

      Not very fair considered how statesmanlike ron paul has run his campaign….

      Wanting the corrupt MSM to be “fair” to Paul, is like wanting a drunken abusive husband to stop beating his wife. It’s just in their nature. That’s why they call them “presstitutes or whorespondents”

      I wouldn’t expect a “win” in Texas either. I was born here, and many Texans are as stupid as the rest of the country. Dr. Paul has been advertising here, but I have only seen a couple of commercials. We just don’t have the money to compete with Goldman Sachs and the rest of the special interests that are behind Romrhoid.
      Our only chance is working in the delegate process here, and we are doing pretty well. We’ll see how the dog and pony straw vote goes.
      I know one of Dr. Paul’s brothers here, and have gotten to visit with Dr. Paul and his wife on a few occasions. They are some of the most quality people you would ever meet. This now cesspool of a country, almost doesn’t deserve a man of his economic experience and integrity.
      I think Dr. Paul was America’s last chance to get it right, and they are blowing it by either letting the media do their thinking for them, or by just being apathetic. . At least we will have fought the good fight, and our consciences will be clear.
      The blame will rest on the other idiots’ shoulders, not ours.

      Here, Here for the Ron Paul supporters on this mostly Neoconservative, progressive news sight. I know all of you hate being called those names. The fact still remains that our country has been heading for the cliff of socialism for decades now, behind our back and not to our knowledge, at least most of our knowledge, and now we see that we are in deep trouble. I was one of you also. A lightbulb went off in my head one day, and I could see what was happening. These corrupt organizations, that have the money to pull the strings, have been leading all of us right to where they want. A place where they, and all their future family, will be in charge of all the world through minipulation of the worlds currencies. They put up candidate after candidate, on both sides of the aisle, knowing that they can get the majority of the people to believe them and vote for their chosen puppet for the next four years. Now, that more people are waking to this fact, they have to put in machines in order to control the vote as they cannot trust the public will pick their puppet. That is our present voting system and society. Shame on all of us.

      Actually, I know a bunch of the Santorum people have defected Paul’s direction. I don’t know what percentage. I don’t know it its over budgetary or prolife, or civil libery issues, but Paul is better on all of those than Romney.

      II’m with you! To all those who discount and discredit Gingrich because of his past personal mistakes I believe you have taken you eye off of the prize.

      Considering who currently is in office, Gingrich is an altar boy. Not to mention all those previously enamored with the white teethed, big grin Clinton who used the White House as a whore house.

      Gingrich was the one who had the ideas, plans, and hutzspa to bring about the most decisive changes needed to set us back on the Constitutional track.

      I still believe Romney is too moderate, and Paul, although he has some great intentions, he is too radical for women, dems, and indepndnts to vote for. Like it or not, a vote for him will be a vote for obama. I don’t like Romney any more than I did McCann. But I dispise obama.

      I voted McCain because of Sarah Palin maybe Romney will pick someone you will like to get you to vote for him I do think however McCain was far more Moderate and progressive then Romney. Romney is a low tax guy and has actual evidence with how he governed to be socially conservative also maybe not his words but his actual actions show otherwise he veto’d abortion laws and gay marriage laws so that shows he is socially conservative in my book. Also his healthcare law if you remember when it was being discusses was actually considered conservative now everyone hates it of course but also by focusing only on individual mandate you are missing the bigger picture on why the Obamacare is actually bad because they can take that part out easy and get everyone to say okay we like it now. We need to focus more on the fact that it will put all insurance companies out of business and control our lives with everything we do Romney‘s law would never do that because it just said you get fined if you don’t purchace health insurance. I am not a supporter of his law but it was nothing compared to ObamaCare and to say it is is naive and isn’t based on facts especially since ObamaCare was over 2000 pages and Romneycare was 70 pages. Now putting liberals in control of this plan was a bad Idea for Romney but he had 80 percent democrat legislature he had to work with them to get things done. He would not of done this in texas or any red state.

      N8, So you think that any mandate is OK? Even in the states, laws have to pass the test of the constitution. The constitution is the supreme law of the land. If a state law is unconstitutional, it is moot. We the people have given into unconstitutional laws and are now paying the price. Our country is about to go under and everyone thinks that more of the same is the way to go. If you continue to do what you’ve always done, you continue to get what you’ve always got. Is it enough? If a candidate has to move to the center, left or right, they are lying to you. You cannot make them move their poositions anywhere. They will do what is in their heart, good or bad. Have you ever seen a couple where one tried to change the other? It always ends badly. It just does not happen. Wake up people. Take a short term psychology class and start seeing people for what they are and not just what they say they are.

    I kind of liked Newt at the beginning of the campaign season… but I got really frustrated with him. It’s my opinion that he did more to hurt our party than help it. He claimed a “clean” race, but he has more sound bites the DNC will use against us than any other candidate. He did have “some” great ideas, but he divided us!

    Yes, I know there were attack ads from the Romney side, but 95% of them were from a Super Pac that he had no control over. Romney rarely ever attacked another opponent unless it was in a debate where they could hash it out back and forth. Newt loved to throw little twisted one liners when Romney had no way to defend himself.

    If this election is so-called “the most important in the history of our country” as he says it is, he would back Romney in the fight against Obama… but in his normal classless and prideful fasion he cannot.

      Newt’s arrogance is only outdone by his tendency to tell every audience what they want to hear (i.e. Moon base in Florida (NASA)). His setup attacks on the press and inflammatory statements were classic Newt trying to get some attention and traction. His exit is no loss for the race and the country.

      I’ve been watching and listening to Gingrich for many years-even before the contract with America, which I admired the GOP for, but Newts ego has always been a problem. He and he alone has all the answers. He is a brilliant man and a great elder statesman, and that is what he should remain. He needs a refresher in sandbox 101, and learn to play well with others. I hope he will put aside his ego and help the country out, and put it first.

      Take a lesson from your Paul notebook… show a bit of class! I guarentee Ron Paul will be the first and only candidate to back Mitt after he drops out or loses at the convention. Ron has been classy from the get go. I like him, but can’t stand a lot of his supporters… they are what turn me off of Paul more than Paul himself. He’s got gumption, I’ll give him that, but he has been nothing but a class act in this campaign, especially toward Romney.

      Besides Ron Pauls crazy leftist foreign policy I like him he is bringing forth great discussions on monetary policy and the fed and cutting the deficit. I like him but his supporters are in my opinion no worse then Obama supporters they think they know so much about constitution but all they do is watch compiriacy theory videos on the bildiburgs and how they are controlling everything and the Jews have all the money and pick all the candadites. The people that support Ron Paul are fake conservatives because they would rather this country get destroyed by Obama then vote for someone who will reverse all the crap Obama did. Yes there is much corruption in politics in both sides of the isle but Romney as a person and Romney‘s conservative platform even if its not as conservative as mine would be or yours would be is a hell of a lot better then Obama’s communist agenda that will destroy this country I will be suprised if he even allows the election to go foward if he knows he is going to get destroyed by Romney.

      So believing that Congress is the only one that can declare war and that if they do declare war, he will strike with every might that the US military has to offer, win the war and come home… that’s a leftist foreign policy? Believing that we should END foreign welfare (read: foreign aid) is a leftist foreign policy? Believing that other nation has a thing called national sovereignty is a leftist policy?

      It was voted on in congress to allow president powers to preemptively strike. So the notion that its not constitutional or war has to be voted on by congress both Iraq and Afgansitan followed these guidlines and were eventually voted on and won in house and senate.

      Ron Paul believes we were the reason we were attacted on 911 and alot of people who like Ron Paul also believe it was an inside job. So telling me he doesn‘t have a leftist agenda with foreign policy doesn’t stick with me. But you may think that not doing anything and leaving people alone will mean peace for us you are both naive and stupid that is not the world we live in

    I supported Santorum, and he would have got the nomination if it hadn’t been for Newt. Now we’re stuck with a moderate liberal candidate, oh well, at least he’s not a commie. I will admit, Newt had some good ideas (sort of) and I don’t mean the moon colony thing. And it was nice to have someone else bashing Obama…

      I actually don’t believe Santorum would of gotten the nomination because they did poll Newt supporters and it was almost half and half for either Romney or Santorum. Newt supporters didn’t like Santorum otherwise they would of voted for him instead knowing he had a chance to beat Romney.

Ron Paul legalise drugs prostitution this that the other we will have anarchy there isn‘t enough morality in this country to sustain that policy also he believes if we stop intervening in the world everyone will like us yah freakin right thats the most idiotic foreign policy ever worse then Obama’s foreign policy. Obama people think that if we keep taking money from the rich and live off of welfare and work for the government they think money will never run out but eventually the rich join the poor because there is no longer an incentive to be rich now where does the Government get its money now. Both societies dont work so lets start back to what does work and that is capitalism and lets make it as pure as possible.

      The point of the non-interventionalist policy is not that if we play nice with the middle east and they’ll like us. It‘s that if we don’t antagonize them, they have plenty of grudges and enemies within their region that if we didn’t bother them, they’d just fight among themselves. By antagonizing them, or siding with one or the other, puts us in their cross hairs or brings them together against a common enemy. Screw the middle east, let them fight among themselves. If they attack, then level their country so they don’t have the capacity to strike again. Nation building doesn’t fix anything. At one point, Republicans were actually AGAINST that sort of thing….

      And they call us Liberals?

      Those statements are opinions of your on me and mine were opinions on people who like Ron Paul not necessarily Ron Paul himself who I actually do like but wouldn’t vote for him due to his foreign policy. I hear the same talking points from Ron Paul people anybody who doesn’t like Ron Paul= neocon, communist, progressive. So you state I am not educated well not by youtube like all the Ron Paul people who watch all the conspiricy theories created on the bildibergs and rothchilds and how they pick our candidates and control everything blah blah blah. You don’t know about mormons I actually am one so I think I would know a little more than you and there is no evidence that mormons are communists whatsoever they one of the most conservative group of people in the United States 80 percent of Utah vote Republican you may not like Republicans but they are not communist. I don’t like everything the Republicans do but I vote republican to make sure to get conservative tax policy, conservative judges, and less regulation. Libertarians require full on revolution to get what they want. Why not vote Romney now and 4 years vote for who ever you think is better we just need to get Obama out of office Romney is not even close to Obama and you thinking he is shows how ignorant and brainwashed you are by Alex Jones or any other Ron Paul lover host.

      To me that is very naive to think if we play nice they will play nice back there is no evidence to support that will actually work. They will hate us no matter what we do they want the world covered with Islam they hate christians and jews and want to destroy them. They hate us because we support Israel and for Ron Paul to really get on their good side he would have to denounce Israel and let palestine take over he doesn’t want that from what I know so in the end his foreign policy will never ever work. Case closed think for once in your life.

    Despite his faults, and yes..they were many. Gingrich is at heart, an idea man. And some of them were awesome!

    He wanted to completely take apart our State Department brick by brick, and put it together in a way that would serve our interests in a constitutional way, rather than it being a haven for liberal thought. I think Mitt Romney could do alot worse than having Newt as his Secretary of State.

      Romney is more to the left than Obama actually and Obama would be better than Romney because it would help advance the cause for liberty and make people realize big goverment isn’t the answer giving Rand Paul a good chance in 2016 or some other liberty candidate. Maybe a financial collapse is what is needed to wake people up for good.
