Gingrich: Romney ‘Probably the Weakest’ GOP Frontrunner Since 1920

Gingrich: Romney Probably the Weakest GOP Frontrunner Since 1920

AP

Newt Gingrich slammed GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney on Sunday, saying he is “probably the weakest Republican frontrunner” in decades.

The former House speaker, appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” was responding to increasing suggestions that it’s time for him to bow out of the race, The Hill reported.

“The Romney camp has been trying to say since last June that I should get out of race,” Gingrich said. “The fact is, Romney is probably the weakest Republican frontrunner since Leonard Wood in 1920.”

Major General Leonard Wood was one of several Republican candidates in a wide-open field in 1920. The party’s convention deadlocked, and the nomination ultimately went to Warren G. Harding, remembered for a scandal-plagued administration.

Gingrich continued, “Yes, [Romney]‘s the frontrunner, but he’s not a very strong frontrunner, nearly all conservatives are opposed to him.“ In places ”where no one else can compete,” he said, Romney “does fine.”

Despite Romney’s large delegate lead, Gingrich said he thinks there still “a space for a visionary conservative.”

Gingrich brushed off the question of whether he’d quit if he lost both Alabama and Mississippi this week, states where he’s been polling well as part of his Southern-focused strategy but that have become increasingly close.

“I think we’ll win both,” Gingrich said. “I think we’re probably pulling ahead in both states.”

He also weighed in on the war in Afghanistan, saying the U.S. mission there may “not be doable,” Politico reported.

“I think that we’re risking the lives of young men and women in a mission that may frankly not be doable,” Gingrich said. “I think it’s very likely that we have lost, tragically lost, the lives and suffered injuries to a considerable number of young Americans on a mission that we’re going to discover is not doable. ”

I just watched some videos on youtube where George Soros said there is little difference between Obama and Romney. Is that so anyone who is a registered Republican could vote for Romney and boost his numbers? Is Soros involved with Romney?

    Just asking :)

newt may be irrelevant in the present campaign, but he is absolutely correct that romney is a very weak candidate, and is a sure loser like mcCain was in 2008…

If the rinos are dumb enough to nominate him (romney), obama will certainly be re-elected in 2012.

Romney beats all other candidates against Obama by a very wide margin. Clearly what you are saying “he is a weak candidate” is just false. Secondly, the fact that any real news source gives the pompous Gingrich anymore headlines it just silly… Ok… let’s say after this coming Tuesday, when his obscurity will be clenched. It’s time to stop entertaining and giving airtime to the infighting and rally behind our clear front runner, by both delegates and popular vote, which is Mitt Romney. We need to capitalize on Mitt’s lead over all the rest, including BO. If we don’t we will look like frantic idiots to anyone ever considering voting against BO this next election, who is already smearing everything about our GOP. We’re not ever going to get a perfect candidate, and by today’s standards, Ronald Reagan would not be able to get elected – who by the way had raised taxes in CA the highest of all time and had passed THE most liberal legislation on abortion in history as a liberal, Democrat governor of a very liberal state. Newt meets the requirements of several psychiatric disorders, nuff said.

Romney governed the most liberal state in the US from the right while never taking a pay check for doing it. He also turned the 2002 winter Olympics around from a 379 million dollar deficit to making a 100 million dollar profit. He donated his 1.2 million salary to charity. He also has created tens of thousands of jobs in the private sector. Bain capitol is a winner not a loser. This man also has a moral compass. Wheres Obamas moral compass? Obama was best friends with a terrorist. (William Ayers). He also took money from criminals like Tony Rezko. We gambled on Obama who was really nothing more than a community organizer. Mitt Romney is a leader and will take our country in a positive direction. Not the social welfare direction we are in right now.

The issue of concern for Newt should not be Romney’s creditentials as a viable “Front runner”. Clearly if Romney wasn’t campaigning, the US citizen would not sustain him him as a pliable candidate. The people of this nation are exhausted of the BS we hear from “idea men” such as the rhetoric brought to us from the “hope and change” promise.
Newt, Santorum and Paul can postulate but what have they actually done to improve their constituency? Realistically, no BS; define their records with clear actual significant process they have enabled the people. It will take a good thirty hours to to truly examine their political history.
This election is about what the candidate can and will do after the swearing in party. Reagan was hammered as a flip-flopper back during the seventies from Ford and Carter and Bush, my parent voted for him as a dem in Cali in the 60′s and look how well he responded to his conversion. Romney may have some history of “re-evaluation”, but his history of doing what is NECESSARY to achieve the greater good for his business associations as well as the populous of State is unmatched and without debate.
He was pro-choice for awhile as a result of a woman’s death, but not for means of birth control; he took a three billion dollar state debt and turn it into two bill surplus– and that wouldn’t have happened unless discontinued state programs because he didnt raise any state taxes.
His Romneycare wasn’t his initiative or his model,…

Recently, I have been inclined to agree with libs that conservatives are generally dumb. There is a vast left-wing conspiracy to crush Romney. One of the reasons he doesn’t get more votes is that when doable, the Obama machine rigs the vote against Romney. The main reason, however, is that Gingrich, Santorum and Paul refuse to concede.

It is not Romney who suffers; it is America who is wheezing painfully. Politicians know this is their chance to seize power and their packs follow them, because human nature is corrupt. So we are helping the commies and Islamists destroy America because we can’t unite behind our front runner.

The irony of it all is that if candidate Obama had been able to show a business record as incredibly successful as Romney’s, conservatives would have crossed the aisle en masse to vote for him. Heck, the Soros gang would have seized power without having to tank the economy. 2012 is here, Obama has failed to fix the economy, and we have someone who can run on that platform. Instead of overwhelming the airwaves and the Internet with a revitalizing message of hope and restoration, conservatives sit on their butts and collectively rip to shreds our candidate for the commie invaders. It’s true, you can’t fix stupid.

Newt’s ego is getting in the way of reality. Newt is splitting votes with Santorum so he is guaranteeing a Mitt nomination. Mitt Romney is one of the strongest presidential candidates ever to run for president. Gingrich and Santorum are two of the weakest candidates ever to run. Gingrich and Santorum have no executive experience and were both asked to leave Washington! They refuse to run for governor, yet think someone should let them be president. Never have two candidates been in the race for themselves more than those two. Santorum and Gingrich’s delegate count speaks for itself…they are weak, unimpressive, undistinguished, and Romney and Trump wouldn’t hire them to run a company, much less a country!

Well if Gingrich or Romney wins in the south it will garauntee Romney’s nomination. Gingrich knows this. Unless he thinks he can deprive Romney the needed 1144 delegates for a decided nomination and then the second round of non binding delegate votes goes to …Gingrich… B.S. I think Paul would have better luck in that situation. Gingrich is in it for Romney now. If AL and MS do not rule out Gingrich and vote for the viable (delagate wise) conservative candidate, Romney will win. Any further splitting the conservative vote and Romney wins. Period. Declare that “politics is a team sport?” So why isn’t he Obama-lite? Judging by his own words, I know what he would’ve done with an 85% Dim majority in the legislature. You weaken your argument when you lie. Beck did attack Gingrich, relentlessly I might add, but he has never been a Romney supporter. Give proof or stop lying. Glenn is only getting behind Romney now, because he knows Santorum can’t win the nomination.

=> “When Gingrich was the front runner in Iowa you Romney Supporters including Glenn S M E A R E D and Trashed OUR FRONT RUNNER.”
      ——
Being the front-runner in the initial polls of a primary is in no way equivalent to being the front-runner in the nomination race. The reason voters in Iowa decided to drop Gingrich and go for Santorum was because of the staunch pro-amnesty stance your candidate took in the debate. Gingrich should’ve learned something from Perry. Amnesty is an outright no-win in a Republican debate. Your candidate shot himself in the foot. It was a self-inflicted wound, but go ahead, make a leap of logic and blame it on Glenn. You sound as foolish as Obama, always blaming Bush for his failures.

Seriously, though — it looks like the race is basically over. I gave money to Santorum and none other. If Newt had put his ego in a box (I suppose the box would have to be a 40-foot shipping container) and dropped out before Super Tuesday, then things would still be possible. But Newt didn’t and Romney will not be stopped. I’m not giving any money to Romney until after the convention, but I can see the writing on the wall.
As for those who stridently say that they won’t vote for Romney, I am reminded of 1992: George Bush didn’t deserve to be re-elected, but the country didn’t deserve Bill Clinton. Both Thomas Sowell and my wife noted that (she was first, but she doesn’t have an opinion column) and they were absolutely correct. You may not think the Romney “deserves” to be President, but does the country deserve 4 more years of Obama? Incidentally, 4 more years when he will not have to worry about re-election?

You don’t want an unstable bipolar guy as president. Besides Newt doesn’t even care about his sick wives, why would he care about anyone else?

All of the candidates have pros and cons and the voting people will eventually sort all of this out, and we will have a candidate to support whole heartedly. I will do this as I know the present direction is just wrong.

Newt has more on the plus side than many want to admit. He’s made some errors along the way, but who hasn’t? I think it‘s just dandy that many in Congress don’t care for him.
