Gingrich Says He’s Scrapping Climate Change Chapter From Upcoming Book

GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich said Thursday he’s axing a chapter on climate change from his forthcoming book — though the intended author of the section said that was news to her, according to National Journal.

The Los Angeles Times reported earlier this month the book will more or less be a sequel to the former House Speaker’s 2007 book, “A Contract with the Earth,“ describing it as a ”collection of essays by various businesspeople and scientists.” The Times said it would include a chapter on climate change by Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech who has said there is “no debate” about the reality of climate change and “the fact that humans are the primary cause.”

A woman expressed concern to Gingrich about the chapter during an Iowa campaign stop Thursday, saying she’d heard Rush Limbaugh talking about it on his radio program.

“That’s not going to be in the book,” Gingrich said to her in a video of the exchange. “We didn’t know that they were doing that — we told them to kill it.”

After the woman stepped away, Gingrich beckoned to a staffer and said, “Remind me when we get back to the bus about Rush and global warming.”

Watch the exchange below, via National Review:

National Journal had Hayhoe’s reaction to the news:

Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech, confirmed in an e-mail interview that she had been asked to write a chapter on climate change for the former House speaker’s book. She said she was approached by former Palm Beach Zoo CEO Terry Maple, Gingrich’s coeditor, at an annual meeting of Republicans for Environmental Protection. Asked to confirm her chapter was dropped, she replied, “I had not heard that.”

Limbaugh had hit out at Hayhoe on his Dec. 19 program, saying she would be contributing to Gingrich’s book and calling her “one of Newt’s experts” who believes in man-made global warming.

In 2008, Gingrich appeared in a now-infamous ad with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying the two agree “our country must take action to address climate change.“ He has since called it ”the dumbest single thing I’ve done” in recent years.

    Things are happening to the climate! Some of the changes are part of a natural cycle. However, I can‘t belief man hasn’t had a part in it. We have, just by interacting with the environment, effected the environment. Depending on the level of our interaction there are measured consequences. Earth systems were created by God to function certain ways, we have corrupted some of those with overuse and exploitation. We have not been good stewards.
    Climate change should be an important chapter of a book that’s, “more or less”, a sequel to one called “A Contract with the Earth.“

      Actually only Republicans, Conservatives or other very bad people affect climate change. No DEMOCRATS,, Chinese, Indians, or any European or African have ever affected the climate as they feel so much about how the bad people (See Above) wreak havoc on the earth. Only Republicans poison water, pollute the air, contaminate the soil, air-raid villages or otherwise do tremendous damage to the earth.
      Is that what you really meant to say?? Al??? Al??? Is that You?? AL??

      We are not good stewards??? I grew up in LA. It is nicer there now (smog wise). Now we just ship our messed up problems to the middle East. With new technology we can drill now and still have a beautiful earth. ALL our middle East problems would dim if we had our own energy…and it won’t be solar (I for one need light in the night).

      Just saying we shouldn’t compromise our air and water for the sake of energy. The former we CAN’T live without, the latter we can learn to live with a little if we have to. Our population (313 mil) will double by the year 2050 so we need ALL we can come up with: clean coal, nuclear (not going to happen), natural gas, biomass, hydro, geothermal, solar thermal, PV, wind, and whatever else can be dreamed up.

He’s the “go to” guy on science in any area, despite not having a college education, especially in either climate science or global warming. But he’s made a fortune supporting the 1% and opposing science if it speaks against corporation trading off human welfare in favor of profits.

      JZS, get your head out of your a$$ and take some time to do some real research, if you are serious about finding the truth about GW, global warming, which is an utter hoax. Have done extensive research on the various proponents and opponents of GW. The opponents have it hands down both in their honesty, integrity, reliability of scientific data and were not paid to “cook the books”, nor hired with a definite agenda to come up with a certain result regardless of the true findings, which was not only the case with the United Nations “teams of experts”, but also with various American as well as British university teams hired through government grants to falsify or skew the results of the “scientific” research. Sad but profoundly true. I have a plethora of data showing such to be exactly the case. If you are going to comment in this arena, learn the facts or don’t show your ignorance by opening your mouth.

      @JVS

      You are quick to denounce anyone that disagrees with global warming it appears. I do have one question for you though. It seems that there is one person that has made millions of dollars on the prospect of global warming. That person is Al Gore who loves flying around the country preaching about this thing called global warming and warning everyone that we are doomed if nothing is done.

      I doubt that has anything to do with him selling carbon credits or anything like that. We all know that this thing called global warming has netted him millions and millions of dollars. Now, my thoughts are that if I had this much money and I really believed in what I was preaching to the rest of the world then I think I would have installed solar panels and a wind mill or two on my personal property and be completely independent of outside sources.

      If I believed in global warming and had the finances to do something about it then that is the first thing that I would have done. Has Al Gore done this. Not to my knowledge.

      So, JZS maybe you should be preaching your antics to Al Gore and not on this forum. Just my humble opinion.

    I have to say, I have been watching and following Newt since the late 1980′s. I really liked him. I kind of saw him as the next Reagan in the future back then. He really seemed well principled, stuck to those principles and was very well spoken. I knew he had a good future in politics and would have followed him to the ends of the earth. Then came Clinton, well, while still being a huge Newt fan, I knew that his (along with other good Republicans) “Contract with America” was an ingenious idea. The country rallied behind him, and the “contract” and one control of the Senate for the first time in over 40 some odd years, which brought Clinton’s legacy to a screeching halt. Not entirely, but it did help in keeping Clinton from ushering in more socialism. The sad thing is, while the “Contract” was touted by the Republicans as being a huge success, it really wasn’t. Yes, the Republicans did live up to most of the “Contract”, some of the more important things were quietly swept under the rug… funny, it seems that nobody noticed. What really turned me off on Newt, was that after the so called “Contract”, Newt, who was being constantly bombarded with negative press, started to try and play the middle road. I will never forget it. I remember watching a news piece on TV where he was touted as being friendly with Clinton, public enemy number one at the time. After that, it seemed that not only he had issues of his own, but, he seemed to be only looking out for himself… s

      and these shmucks best stop polluting our air, with chemicals in the jet fuel, all in the name of correcting man made global warming. does anyone know what happens if you countersteer when you don’t need to? i’ll tell you… you crash into the ditch.

      When the climate scientist can explain what the correlation between solar activity and the rise in earth temperatures. Plus, why did the temperature on Mars rise at the same time Earth rose? Maybe the sun?

      @Exrepublisheep

      How‘s it feel to be Al Gore’s useful idiot? You’re making him rich beyond his wildest dreams, but what do you get for it, a warm and fuzzy feeling like you’re really doing something for your country?

      If that’s what does it for you, by all means. But, you’ll pardon me if I sit this one out?

    Newt, maybe not a good idea, really, you need to put the climate change chapter back in your book, right after the Birther chapter and your theory on Big Foot.

    Maybe you could also put a chapter in your book on how Obama really isn’t such a bad guy and how Pelosi saved Congress. That would really help your campaign.

    So I guess you’ll be voting for Obama again next year Wireman, right? I personally don;t want to return to the 19th century so I won’t be voting for Obama OR Newt.

    I don’t know about the 19th century, I think the 17th century would be a little closer to the muck which these Gaia worshippers would return us. I hate to think of the starving millions around 2050 if we stop producing CO2 fertilizer for increased crop yields.
