Gingrich Slams Chris Wallace Over ‘Gotcha Questions’

Newt Gingrich has had just about enough of these process questions.
Asked to address concerns that his campaign has been “a mess” that reflects badly on his leadership abilities, the former House speaker hurled the question back at moderator Chris Wallace.
“I took seriously Bret’s injunction to put aside the talking points. And I wish you would put aside the gotcha questions,” Gingrich said, vowing again that he’d forge ahead with his campaign: “Like Ronald Reagan, who had 13 senior staff resign … and his new campaign manager laid off 100 people … I intend to run on ideas.”

I liked him as Speaker of the house, he is a fine author and public speaker,,, but I feel he is carrying too much baggage to be effective. He is beholden to WAY too many special interests to administer a truly conservative administration.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:35amMy only problem with Newt was his inability to recognize the radical nature of Obama when the rest of us could see it so clearly so long ago. What does that tell you about his ability to separate himself from the Washington insiders and become a man of the people? With that said, I’d still vote for him tomorrow.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 8:51amWallace asked Bachmann if she was a flake when he interviewed her on his program. Now he asked Newt a question that had little to nothing to do with his positions. Wallace is trying too hard to be like an MSNBC host. I was impressed with Newt. He gave very clear answers and had a real command of what is going on in government and how to fix it. His experience showed above the others. He has no more baggage than most of the other candidates, especially Democrats. Atleast he hasn’t twitted himself naked to lure women into a sexual encounter with him. Hes older now and I doubt he would make the same mistakes again. He would take on this mess immediately by repealing almost everything that has happened over the last couple of years. I like his forcefulness. Its what we need now.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:01pmPlus, he NAILED that idea of a select committee that will come up with a solution to the debt problem. It’s ludicrous to think that 13 hand-picked, politically focussed Senators and Congressmen will come up with a “solution” behind closed doors in November. They’re going to gut our military, just like Mark Rudd (Weather Underground) predicted back in 2008 after Obama was elected. Then, where will we be? Defenseless to attack by North Korea, China, Iran, Venezuela, et al that’s where!

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:06pmI agree with the majority of who and what Chris Wallace represents. I will not vote for anyone in the Republican Establishment period. They have been tainted with the Progressive stench. i.e. Newt, and anyone who has been living the Washington politician lifestyle since the late 1980s. Newt may have said some energetic points but for someone who said, “the Era of Reagan is over,” every point he made last night portrayed a little portion of the spirit of Reagan Conservatism. And Newt is in no way entitled to claim inheritance of such an honor. In fact none of the candidates I have seen have yet come close to be so honorably compared. But Reagan was a unique individual and I doubt anyone ever will. Newt is an expert and adapting to what I call political pop culture. Which I deem as fake. But I can’t blame any established politician who is afraid of losing their job in an uncertain economy such as ours which they created. He was spot on within an answer he gave on how we got to this point in our economy. So yeah he sounded strong and he no doubt understands Washington. But I believe he is saying what Conservatives (Tea Partiers) want to hear but doesn’t believe it himself, hence he is a C.I.N.O.
Report Post »Anyway, I think any News network that holds a debate should not focus on how many questions they can ask in 2 hours, but rather ask a question that all candidates will get to answer. Then let each candidates if they choose to pick each other apart with a rebuttal.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 4:05pmGenuine? You obviously haven’t looked at his voting record when he was in Congress.
He voted for NAFTA which weakened our borders with Canada and Mexico.
He voted for GATT which makes the US subject to the authority of the World Trade Organization.
Domestic policy votes include supporting the creation of the Department of Education in 1979 under President Carter. Approval of that bill was close – 3 more votes against it would have killed it. Gingrich was one of 30 Republicans who supported it when the Republicans held 159 seats in the House of Representatives. Even one of the Democrats pointed out that there is no authorization in the Constitution for federal involvement in education.
In 1979 he also voted for the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act which gave the federal government control over almost 80 MILLION acres in Alaska. Jimmy Carter signed the bill into law in 1980. That act turned 80M acres into tourist sites controlled by the federal government rather than Alaskan state controlled mineral and timber resources.
Time Magazine, one of the Progressives’ propaganda outlets, named Newt Gingrich “Man of the Year” in 1995. If you watch closely who is currently giving him, if not praise, then at least less vitriolic coverage, during the current election articles you’ll see that they are mostly leftist news outlets – Time Magazine, The New York Times, Huffington Post, etc. Compare that to their coverage of Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann.

He helped pass the law that created the Department of Education when even a Democrat pointed out that were no authorization for it in the Constitution. He promoted and accomplished the taking of 80 million acres of land from the state of Alaska which is now tourist destinations instead of producing timber and mineral resources. These accomplished under President Jimmy Carter.
When he was Speaker of the House he also produced not only spending increases but an actual growth of the RATE of spending increases and is at least partially reponsible for the debt we have now.
The Contract with America was a marketing ploy – nothing more. Dig beyond the surface and what you will find is that his actions while in office were the opposite of what he says publicly.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 3:56pmWhen Wallace asks a question, he adds his smarmy little comment in it, as he did last night when he asked Newt if his campaign was a “mess.“ The word ”mess” is not objective. It is perjorative.
He also said, in his question to Cain, that Cain had made “questionable” statements about Muslims. It is not Wallace’s place to decide what is “questionable”, but to just quote the statements and ask Cain about them. The viewers will decide if the statements were “questionable.”
This is the same thing Wallace did to Bachmann, when he asked her if she was a flake. Completely innappropriate to use that word, flake. It is not objective reporting or news coverage– it is intended to sway or influence the viewer.
Wallace always makes the question about himself, in a way, as in , “Look at how provacative I am being.” It as much about him as anything. He apparently develops his questions by how much he can use provacative terms or words. He is just as bad as any of the corrupt media on any other network.

Gingrich risked being lumped into that category last night with his response. And if he thinks ABC/NBC/CBS and others won’t ask the same type of questions, he’s kidding himself.
Asking an inconvenient question is not a gotcha question. I’ve been a Gingrich fan for years for his ideas, but even I’ve been disappointed in his apparent flip flops and disconnect in what he has said from week to week. I still don’t understand how he defends his commercial with Pelosi re: Global Warming.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 4:05pm@CHARLES116: Obama seemed to manage his campaign staff very well. It is the country he has made a mess of.
There are 2 sides to what occurred with the Gingrich staff, and we really don’t know what went on. For Wallace to say it was a “mess” is not objective. It is possible that there were just disagreements on message, or maybe the staff saw better opportunities elsewhere, or maybe it really was a mess. We don’t know and never will get the whole truth. It was not going to be resolved in a 30 second answer, either.
Wallace claims he was asking about Newt’s record, but that is not a “record”. A “record” is facts that can be verified and proven. What went on in Newt’s office is just going to be argued by the persons who were involved.
Newt has a very long “record” of public service and votes. That is what he should have been asked about, not internal arguments of the staff.

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 12:02amI lost respect for Wallace during that interview. I have never seen someone take a pummelling like Newt delivered on Wallace tonight. Newt can’t win but he is laying the groundwork to start to get some of these gotcha meaningless questions out of these debates and turn the focus to the real issues. York’s question to Bachmann about her husband was also lame and glad to see the crowd boo it. Surprised to see that come from York.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 11:07pmWrong. Newt is unmatched on this stage in intellect and experience. He also needs to appear as every bit as virile (sp?), coherent, and decisive as he always does… GO NEWT! RUN!
Not to mention… I’d love to see him Mop The Floor with “B.”… Oh, I’d pay money.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 11:24pmI like Michele and Sarah, I just want neither as my president, in 12′… later? maybe…
What I want is someone who is able to open a can of Whoop A**, as Newt did tonight… unapologetically… Cain will do that, but I‘m concerned he’ll be caught off guard with the expeience factor.
I think Mitt has it in him, but he’s been afraid to unleash it. He still has to be nicey and smile. It‘s either his faith or he’s afraid of the race thing.
I really love Santorum; he’ll make a great veep.
What I want is someone to carry a Big Stick, kick a**, take names later… Christie?

Posted on August 12, 2011 at 4:13pmSo what if you met him? That was not an objective question– not when Wallace suggests Newt’s campaign was a “mess.” He does that crap in a lot of his questions, to make the question about himself, as in “Look at how provacative I am being.”
He added the Bachmann “flake” thing at the end of the question, just like he did with Newt. He called Cain’s comments on Muslims “questionable”, but it is up to the viewers to decide if they are “questionable”. Wallace just needs to quote them.
Wallace is as bad as anyone on MSNBC, CNN or any other lib network. It is all about him, not the guest or candidate. Objectivity does not include suggesting something is a “mess”, or somebody is a “flake.” It means asking a straightforward, neutral question, without adjectives, adverbs or incendiary comments.
