Gingrich Tangles With ‘Meet the Press’ Panel Over ‘Extreme’ Presidential Platforms

Newt Gingrich Tells Meet the Press Panel Democrats More Extreme Than Republicans on Abortion, Social Issues

(Getty File Photo)

Former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich tangled with a “Meet the Press” panel Sunday over the commonly-accepted assertion that the Republicans have a more “extreme” position on social issues than Democrats.

Gingrich argued that when stripped of political rhetoric and presented as the basic facts, more people are inclined to agree with Republicans.

“The president of United States voted three times to protect the right of doctors to kill babies who came out of abortion still alive,” Gingrich noted, adding:  “The vast majority of women do not believe the taxpayers should pay to abort a child in the eighth or ninth month.”

Watch the entire exchange, which begins with a discussion of Todd Akin’s widely-condemned “legitimate rape” comments (skip to around 5:30):

After noting that Biden can claim Romney wants to put African-Americans in “chains” without notable recrimination from the mainstream media, Gingrich said:

…the Democratic Party plank on abortion is the most extreme plank in the United States.  The president of United States voted three times to protect the right of doctors to kill babies who came out of abortion still alive.  That plank says tax-paid abortion at any moment of…meaning, partial birth abortion…that’s a 20 percent issue.  The vast majority of women do not believe the taxpayers should pay to abort a child in the eighth or ninth month…

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman replied:

I’m a Planned Parenthood Democrat on– on– on the issue of– of choice.  And I think that that is where the country should be.  That is where many, many women in this country are.  And I’m glad there are people running for the presidency who will defend that position.  Period.  Paragraph.  End it.

After an interruption by David Gregory, Gingrich turned back to Friedman:

…so you think it’s acceptable to have a party committed to tax-paid abortion in the eighth and ninth month?  And you think that’s a sustainable position in the United States?  If the news media spent as much time on the extremism of the Democrats as they spend trying to attack us, you would– they would not be able to adopt that plank this week.

Friedman retorted: “I do believe that’s a defensible position, but I also believe I’m– I’m here as a journalist, I’ll let the Democratic Party defend it.”

We will hear : Blame Romney; trash the Republican Senate; trash the Republican House; trash religious leaders; Leak information damaging to Republicans; Leak information damaging to the American military ; demean Fox News. Propagandize for the International Far Left. Rah. Rah Rah. Since the Media is now the Fourth Branch of our government and, perhaps the most influential , and since the Media is filled with Lefties, we will just have to endure four more years of bias – regardless of who wins the election. Gingrich always comes off looking good in these situations.

Sadly the new conservatives hate him for being a progressive Republicans and liberals hate him for being a Republican.

Not to mention his baggage make it hard for him to be a serious candidate.

If Romney won I would love to see him name Newt as Press secretary. Now that would be one hell of a show everyday.

It is not our role or the media’s role or other polititians roles to get involved and demand Todd Akin to get out of the race, that is up for the voters in Missouri to deside.

We have to stay engaged. The old MSM no longer owns the information stream, and we’ve got to make sure they never again get control. We must remain active, throwing the truth at them whenever they open their pie-holes. It is trench warfare, and alas it probably must always be so, since we don’t want to abridge the second amendment just to get at them. I look forward to the day the current MSM are all bankrupt.

Todd Akin spoke what he believed about female bodies not being able to have babies when they were “legitimately” raped. So he apologized for what? That wasn’t a gaffe. That was what he believed: women who are “legitimately” raped don’t get pregnant as a rule, including rape by incest. Women’s bodies prevent that. Therefore, in Akin’s opinion, there should be no exceptions for abortions, because, you know, if there was a pregnancy it must have been illegitimate rape as opposed to legitimate rape. Or did I get that backwards/

Newt says he’s apologized for giving his legitimate opinion. Sorry Newt – speaking to an empty chair here – that wasn’t a gaffe, that was what he believed. And he ought to apologize for being an idiot. But there’s no escaping the fact that he spoke his opinion: a raped woman should be required to bear that child because, you know, if it was REAL rape she wouldn’t have gotten pregnant.

Aiken apologized and said he was wrong about that nonsense. He really thought that women who were actually raped (as opposed to simply reporting a voluntary encounter as rape) would not get pregnant. He was wrong. He admitted he was wrong. He apologized for being wrong.
Now . . . when is Juan Williams going to apologize for saying that Timothy McVeigh and Rudolph were “Christians” when they in fact were atheists? I’m not going to hold my breath. After all, there has been no outrage about it — Juan uttered that falshood in the same 5 minutes that he said he would feel uncomfortable if a bunch of middle eastern young men were to get on a plane he was on. That expression of FEELING was more significant than his FALSEHOODS about Christians.

I remember when he claimed that he landed in a foreign country under sniper fire. It wasn’t a lie despite the landing being on film, with no sniper fire, but he was so delusional he actually tricked himself into believing he did.

Then there was that time where he expressed worry that the over population of Guam would cause the island to flip over. He did not use this as a scare tactic. He is just that stupid.

Your right. People who make those types of ignorant claims do not need positions of power over the rest of us.

It is going to be interesting when Obama leaves and can no longer help prop up the failing European Union economy. When Europe fails, which it will, then how do the Progressives/Liberals in this country continue to sell to the American people that socialism is better than capitalism. Capitalism produces success and failure. Usually the failures of capitalism are only temporary and are self-correcting by free markets. Socialism can not produce successes, it can only produce failure, permanent failure and dependence on government. That is it’s purpose it claims to be able to create a classless society, unfortunately history repeatedly (the USSR, Pre-capitalist China) teaches us that Socialism produces two classes, a ruling class which is government bureaucrats and the rest of us who are forced to live on scraps from the governments table. Winston Churchill said it best–“the problem with socialism is that it spreads misery evenly”. This Socialism is the ideology that the main stream media has adopted and is trying desperately to sell to Americans. I am hopeful that there is enough intelligent life left in this country to send Obama and his flawed beliefs packing. And when we see the collapse of Europe the people demand and receive an apology from the mainstream media for attempting to help the democrats destroy this country.

Democrats are on record as supporting the right to murder a child inside the womb or outside of the womb murder is murder no matter when it occurs. It appears the democrat party is is rapidly in the direction of Dr. Singer of Princeton he claims it is ethical to kill (murder) a child from before birth several months after a child is born. This evil this party embraces should bring shame to it’s voters but apparently this moral belief system is acceptable to them. We have seen in history what happens when a society begins its descent into collective madness. The democrat party is leading the way rapidly.

My thoughts exactly Doc. Why is late term abortion a “choice” and not infanticide? It makes no sense to me. How could anyone not see a child in the seventh, eighth or nineth month of development as nonhuman? Why is it considered murder to kill an infant that has passed through the birth channel naturally and not considered murder to forcibly remove the same baby from the womb days, even hours, earlier? This practice is barbaric! What is wrong with these people! Friedman is a monster and so is Obama.

then the producer jumps, in his earpiece,
quickly telling him to exit the topic & move on.

Hang-dog face Doris Goodwin Kearns, an admitted plagiarizer,
sits there scowling because she’s got no defense.

HaveNO doubt, Gingrich WOULD have been a GREAT President-
      Churchillian, in every manner.
No one schools the press like he does.

Let‘s hope he holds all of Oblameo’s liberal boot lickers
accountable to the facts & truth
and let’s hope Romney rewards Gingrich with a key position
      of his choice.

I, too, really hope that if Romney wins, he places Newt in a position of leadership. Every president needs an attack dog and Newt is just the man. He never cowers and will defend his positions with the best the Left has to offer. I know he comes with baggage attached, but how could he possibly have any more baggage than former President Clinton?

Most conservatives end up looking like idiots when they are interviewed by the liberal media. Even when they are in the right.

Some can hold their own. (Paul Ryan)

A few are combative and fight back (Allen West)

But Newt seems to be in a class of his own. He consistently destroys liberal positions, and always makes them look stupid. We need more like him.

If Obama controls healthcare in an aging society then he effectively control its death rate.  If he controls the death rate then he can effectively control the amount of revenue collected as a result of the death tax (the federal estate tax).  This is a tax that is assessed on the value of all of your assets upon your death including your house, cars, furniture, business property, machinery and inventory, stocks, bonds and real estate.  This is a big part of his hidden agenda.  This is the pot of gold Obama is after.
In 2013, the exemption drops from $5 million to $1 million.  Under an Obama 2nd term that exemption will fall much further and the death tax rate will climb enormously.  This is how he is going to “spread the wealth around”.

Friedman, you don’t hesitate to defend your opinion which is why you write COMMENTARIES! Therefore, when you cannot defend something suddenly you are a “journalist”? The truth is that you cannot defend this opinion. How on earth can you support something that is indefensible???? The ends justify the means?

On this same show, Carly Fiorina also made a very valid point about why Democrats keep treating women as special interest groups, when they consist of 50% of the population?

I agree late term abortion or for that matter any abortion is wrong, if someone chooses for whatever reason to justify killing their baby it is a decision they will have to live with and answer before God. It should not be the place of the Government to make the decision it should be up to the individual, at their OWN expense NOT on tax payer money.

By that logic, why make murder and rape illegal? If I go and kill someone is that not also “between me and god?” If you consider a late term baby a human being then what’s the difference? That‘s such a disingenuous argument it’s not even funny. It’s ironic how the left is perfectly happy letting the government dictate how large a soda drink they can buy yet magically turn rabidly small government when it comes to the issue of murdering a late term baby. Very telling.
