Gingrich Tells Super PAC to Edit ‘Inaccuracies’ in Romney Attack as Romney Responds in New Vid

DUNCAN, S.C. (The Blaze/AP) — Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is calling on an outside group that supports him to edit “inaccuracies” from a film it produced attacking Mitt Romney’s tenure as a venture capitalist. But the group is sticking by the video.

The move comes as Gingrich, as well as other candidates, face pressure from an array of Republicans and conservatives to scale back their criticism of Romney’s business record before it undermines the party heading into a general election with President Barack Obama.

Gingrich said Friday that he would continue to raise questions about Romney’s tenure as the head of Bain Capital, a private equity firm, and Romney’s experience as Massachusetts governor.

But he said he wants Winning Our Future, a political action committee run by his allies, to cut inaccuracies from a 28-minute film it released this week assailing Romney’s record at Bain. Shorter segments from the film, called “King of Bain”, are also running on television in South Carolina ahead of the state’s Jan. 21 primary.

“I am calling on them to either edit out every single mistake or pull the entire film,” Gingrich said Friday after opening a campaign headquarters in Orlando, Fla.

Mitt Romney, however, defended his record in a new television ad Friday that accuses Republican presidential rivals who criticized his time at the helm of a private equity firm of “embarrassing themselves by taking the Obama line.”

“Mitt Romney helped create and ran a company that invested in struggling businesses, grew new ones and rebuilt old ones, creating thousands of jobs,” says Romney’s new ad in South Carolina that lists Staples, Sports Authority and Steel Dynamics as successes of the Bain Capital venture firm. “We expected the Obama administration to put free markets on trial … Romney’s GOP opponents are embarrassing themselves by taking the Obama line.”

The film assails Romney for “reaping massive rewards” for himself and investors while running Bain, at the expense of “tens of thousands” of workers who lost their jobs as a result.

Gingrich did not say what in the film was inaccurate and should be removed. But he pointed to a fact-check story in the Washington Post that said there was no evidence that Romney and Bain were responsible for the job losses cited in the film, and quoted people interviewed for the movie who said their words were taken out of context.

Either way, the White House has now picked up on the attacks.

As if on cue, Obama’s campaign released a scathing memo noting that Bain closed companies and cut wages and benefits, while Romney and his partners became wealthy. The memo amounts to a roadmap of the Obama campaign’s general election playbook should Romney become the GOP nominee.

“His overwrought response to questions about it has been to insist that any criticism of his business record is an assault on free enterprise itself,” top Obama campaign aide Stephanie Cutter wrote. “But this is just an attempt to evade legitimate scrutiny of the record on which he says he’s running.”

The group behind the ad, however, isn’t backing down. It took a defiant tone with National Review:

“His defense has been a pathetic performance,” Tyler says. “If he is under this kind of pressure from our PAC, what do you think Axelrod and Obama are going to do to him with a billion dollars? He is not prepared to go head to head against Barack Obama. They’ll make mincemeat out of him.”

“Show us the evidence, let’s see the numbers,” Tyler says, challenging the Romney campaign to document the jobs created by Bain Capital. “I don’t have an issue with Romney’s role in the free-market system; I think it was necessary. But don’t tell me you’re an eagle when you’re a vulture.”

“They’re acting as if my criticism is some sort of heresy,” Tyler says. “Mitt Romney is not the nominee. This is a competitive race. Just like free enterprise is competitive, politics is competitive, too.” More than irking the Romney campaign, the reaction to the film, he says, “shows that Romney does not actually have broad shoulders, and that maybe he’s not a big boy,” one ready for a general election.

PACs are legally prohibited from coordinating directly with campaigns, though many are staffed by longtime supporters of the candidates.

The former House speaker has blamed what he calls negative and misleading ads from a pro-Romney PAC for eroding his support in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses. He finished a disappointing fourth in Iowa, as well as in New Hampshire, and now sees South Carolina as his last chance to slow Romney’s march toward the GOP nomination.

On Friday, Gingrich renewed his previous calls for Romney to disavow misleading ads from a PAC supporting him, called Restore Our Future.

“The American people deserve a robust debate and full comparison of the plans and records of the people who are asking for their vote. They also deserve assurances that the information they are hearing is accurate,” Gingrich said. “I am committed to holding my campaign and my supporters to this high standard of accuracy and I hope Gov. Romney will do the same.”

Romney and Gingrich have tangled over the role of PACs before. In a debate earlier this week, Romney said that while he couldn’t direct the ads put out by groups supporting him, he hoped that if they contain any wrong information, “they take it out.”

Associated Press writers Kyle Hightower in Orlando, Fla., and Christine Armario in Miami contributed to this report.

You are about as accurate as a Gingrich ad. Roseanne Barr is not a Mormon. She is Jewish. Her family moved to Salt Lake City after immigrating to the US, so they involved themselves with the LDS Church in order to fit in. You might say that Barr was somewhat of a Mormon in her younger years based on her involvement, but she is definitely not a Mormon now if she ever was one. Apparently, her personality radically changed and she ran away from home after being hit by a car and suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Good for Gingrich!!!! He has said ALL ALONG that he did not want to campaign this way…AND ROMNEY would have none of playing FAIR!! All of his ads against Gingrich WERE LIES! And he swore he knew nothing about it, yet five seconds after those words came out of his mouth he was quoting the LIE word for word. So guess what..if you can hand it out he had better be able to take it! One GOOD LIE DESERVES ANOTHER!! And this time I REALLY do believe that Gingrich believed it was factual…the maker of the film has been on all major media outlets stating that it was fact checked and everything WAS factual…Atleast Gingrich was willing to have them EDIT OUT anything that was not true. ROMNEY on the other hand refused to ADMIT he even knew about the ADS?????? NO MORE LIARS IN THE WHITE HOUSE….Gingrich in 2012!!!!

Aye aye, Romney’s a big boy. He doesn’t need media types to protect him. If he believed in what he was doing, let him defend it. It looks though that he doesn’t want to defend anything, Romney just wants to take pot shots at their character without addressing the facts. Hmmm, Romney thinks he’s too good and too popular to defend the facts. Is that the kind of weenie that can beat Obama. Someone who won’t even admit facts. Someone who skitters around the truth and attacks the characters of those attacking him rather than talking about the facts. Because that is exactly what Romney is doing. Listen to him. Everything he does is exactly what he claims others are doing to him.

Bring out someone who will say that they were personally lobbied by Gingrich, who isn‘t supporting Romney or Paul and then we’ll talk. Restoring our Future did not advertise lies regarding Gingrich. You are mistaken. They released commercials based on facts. And Gingrich made a fatal mistake which makes his latest comments disingenuous. During the debate he threatened Romney with the Video. He was not supposed to know about a video or an ad or any other attempt at support from his PAC until their materials were made public to everyone, and yet he knew a scathing video that would last 27 minutes was on its way to being released. Romney stated that he had not seen ALL of the videos but then cited from that which he HAD SEEN. Listen to the debate portion again and you will see where honor is Romney’s friend, but not Gingrich’s.

Trust me when I tell you that this video doesn’t convince me to back Gingrich; he’ worse then Bain in that he forced both NAFTA and GATT down our throats and we all are paying the price for that decision now. Romney may not have been the official head of Bain when a lot of these things happened, but he definitely profitted and more then likely knew what was going on then. In that, I have no doubt. It looks like it’s either Santorum or Paul; Perry‘s just a lost puppy looking for it’s owner (and has no chance). Romney better get in front of this one and not just say that he wasn’t part of Bain then; he better say he had no idea what was going on and be sincere. I seriously doubt that he was innocent in all this. :)

Wow; now I‘m wondering if Romney’s just Gingrich light. Sad. I remember KB Toys. Had no idea Romney’s company caused their demise. This video should have been shown 5 years ago; Romney should never have been allowed to even be a contender imo. Might have to re-access if Romney get’s the nod now. Again, nothing wrong with greed so long as prudence and good comes of it. What apparently happened with Bain shows me again, that Romney has no concept of prudence. I can’t support an unethical man (one who does not understand the concept of prudence) regardless of what party he/she belongs too. Let’s hope Santorum or Paul wins. Sad for us all. As a side note, I have personal reasons to despise unscrupulous people (and you all just don’t know the half of it and I have not nor will I ever share that). Again, why has the Republican party allowed such a man to even run for potus? That’s the question of the day. I know what Romney says; that his company had to let some go in order to let others keep their jobs, but all I see is a company that knows how to spend just enough, then to cash out before destroying other companies and lives. Once, a fluke, several a modus operandii. Profit for the sake of profit, people be damned; how do you convince me to vote for this man now folks? Gingrich, who’s actions led to even more destroyed lives (i.e., NAFTA/GATT) is no better but glad that his PAC made the video. :)

Almost everything in this film is inaccurate. I am NOT a RINO ROMNEY supporter—-but most of what is detailed in the film took place after Romney left the employ of Bain—-he left that position in 1999. Look at the film and compare the dates of his “offenses” almost all of them took place after 1999. Republicans supporting this film are in fact suppoting Obama and undercutting the free enterprise system. They should be ashamed but instead are proving what many of us have felt about Newt and Perry all along—-they are Liberal thinkers hiding behind the Republican Party banner. Romney is little better, but is electable and a little better. Too bad Santorum can’t get it together—–looks like once again the GOP will run a RINO for President.

Maybe so; thought I heard that Mitt supposedly left around 1999, but then, he still had control of a lot of things for years afterwards. Who really knows. Still, it don’t look pretty for Bain or in particular, for Romney. I’m all for capitalism so long as prudence is considered. When I see that Bain invested just enough to get the stock values to go high enough, sell off the shares, then the companies consequently plummets into oblivion, that is not what I consider prudent; greed for greed’s sake, unlike Gekko’s opinion, is wrong. Greed in order to make your product the best is good. Maybe a fine line, but not to me. :)

I think a man running for the President of these United States, should be so far above this kind of personal, prideful attacks on anyone, let alone a fellow republican trying to defeat the single most Marxist president in our countries history. You are quite obviously a moron. If a candidate is actually found to directly give information or marching ordedrs to a PAC, super or not it is illegal. PAC’s are simply groups of people that support one candidate or another. If you are really sickened and bothered by the whole system, then after this election regardless of who wins keep speaking out and speak out against the parties. This all begins with the Republican and Democratic Party leadership.
Furthermore if he doesn’t come out after inaccuracies are exposed, then you would all call him a hypocrite. However if he does come out and demand that they run only the truth, suddenly he’s just being a sleazy politician. If you treat all candidates with the same measuring stick you’ll never vote for anyone. Which in recent years wouldn‘t have been too bad but we need every vote we can muster to put someone who isn’t determined to destroy America, in its current form, in office.

Reminds me of the CNN interview with that Pierce guy the other day. The host brought up a heart warming story of Newt with his father over in France at the WWII memorial and how looking at the mass grave of the lost (or something like that) he was deeply touched. Because it doesn’t fit the “talking points” issued by “clear channel”, and Glenn is financially tied to them via vie his radio show, his real “cash cow”, that’s why. Clear Channel is tied to the NeoCon side off the globalist elite agenda, they don’t want our good Dr. Paul.
I plan to do my part to cause them as much consternation and indigestion as I can!
Ron Paul, prevent Americas fall! 2012

    Hey Newty,
You can give it but not take it – Whiner or rather
Good historian but ugly as a toad – women will not for for him or the old man
I would however make room for the old nut in my administration
I call him Dark Vader (little supped shouldered but) and he would be responsible for eliminating departments and agencies until the federal government was 1/5th the size it is today.

I’m one woman who would never vote for him as he has the morals of an alleycat & he definitely hasn’t changed. The evangelicals in SC are backing him at a higher rate than Santorum. Go figure. I will stick with Romney.

I disagree,I wouldn’t want this old drama queen any where near my administration. He would be creating so many unnecessary problems and distractions within the administration and give fodder to the Democrats. The guy is so erratic that he would probably sabotage an administration’s efforts out of spite.

Now Ron Paul on the other hand….would play a major part in my administration!

      @Simonne

Evangelicals would rather slap God in the face for commanding us not to commit adultery, and choose Gingrich – the antithesis of morality and opposition to God’s law of adultery; than to choose a man who lives a morally clean life and a devout Christian.

Essentially, God is separating those who truly seek righteousness from those who remain at the buffeting of Satan. Gingrich represents everything reprehensible of those things most sacred to our society: infidelity, immorality, greed, unethical, corruption from the power of representation and disdain of others who choose not to follow him. These are the facts of his lifestyle choices and these are the issues of the man Evangelicals are embracing.

Their pride will seal their fate as they seek to stop the mormon menice. The National Council of Churches note the decline of churches throughout the US and the World with the biggest drop in South East US. The So Baptist Convention has dwindled froma high of 16.6 mil in 2005 to 15.95 mil in 2010, Church of Christ down -58% from their height of 1981 ( discontinues to issue membership records since 2007), Lutheran down -11% from 2000, Methodist -8% from 1997 to 2004, Seventh Day added close to 2.5 since 2000 and was noted as the largest growth for year 2009. Pentalcostal, Assembly of God all suffer decline as noted by the NCC.
The LDS, however, has tripled in size since 1985 with a high of 587,234 in 1989 and 452,735 in 1990 with an average of 316k yearly.
      Why?

What baffles me the most about evangelicals not supporting Paul is that besides Perry (who will be out soon), Paul is the only Evangelical Christian in the race. There are two Mormons and two Catholics (and very slimy ones at that), and evangelical Christians are supporting them?!?!

I think it should be pointed out that Paul is the only evangelical in the running. Also, most Christians are not aware of the fact that Ron Paul will be, in his own words, the most pro-life President in history. It’s also important to point out that by cutting all foreign aid, Paul will be helping Israel, since we currently give more money to Israel’s enemies than we give to Israel.

“GINGRICH TELLS SUPER PAC TO EDIT ‘INACCURACIES’”

He can’t do that, it would be illegal. The very act of asking implies he has influence over them, and that is illegal as well.

Does “TP” stand for “TEA Party”? If so, it didn’t exist until 2009, right?

Wiki definition of Tea Party (I agree) The Tea Party movement (TPM) is an American populist political movement that is generally recognized as conservative and libertarian, and has sponsored protests and supported political candidates since 2009. It endorses reduced government spending, opposition to taxation in varying degrees, reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit, and adherence to an originalist interpretation of the United States Constitution. (adherence to the Constitution is the part I like best)
