Gingrich to Romney: Drop the ‘Pious Baloney’

Newt Gingrich wasted no time hitting rival Mitt Romney during Sunday’s Republican presidential debate, asking him early on to drop the “pious baloney” when Romney touted his motivations for running for office.
“For me, my career was being in business and starting a business and making it successful,” Romney said. “My life’s passion has been my family, my faith and my country. I believe, by virtue of the experiences I’ve had, that I’m in a good position to make a contribution to Washington.”
He went on, attempting to expand his time while moderator David Gregory tried to cut in and pose the next question to Gingrich.
“I realize the red light doesn‘t mean anything to you because you’re the front-runner. But could we drop a little bit of the pious baloney?” Gingrich asked.
“The fact is, you ran in ‘94 and lost, and that‘s why you weren’t serving with Santorum,” Gingrich said. “You have been running consistently for years and years and years, and then suddenly citizenship showed up in your mind – just level with the American people: You’ve been running at least since the 1990s.”

Report Post »Just because you run and lose and continue to try to run doesn‘t mean he’s a lifelong politician. He was a businessman that ran and lost. He stayed a business man thru lost elections.
The point is, the way it was set up in early America was people go to Washington, serve and then go back home. You aren’t a life long politician. Mitt, losing elections, does not make him a lifelong politician. It makes him a citizen that lost elections.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 10:56pmLet’s look at this whole Romney, Santorum, Paul, Gingrich, Huntsman, Perry thing pragmatically as honest conservatives. The main stream media we all hate LOVES and FAWNES all over and is supporting Romney. Anyone care to think about why? Obama does not want any part of the others. I personally like Newt because I think he is the only one who has the gnads to push through congress the things he talks about and does not care what the fall out from the media will be. He’s already been there and done that. And it was good for America when he did it. Santorum, Perry, Paul, Huntsman….all great guy’s, but, are they willing to take the political heat? Newt’s been there done that. This is not new territory for him. It will be a shame if we put in Romney. Same old thing. Republican establishment wants him. Why? He won’t upset the apple cart. They know Gingrich will. We need the apple cart upset. Big time.

I agree. We must follow our own rules. This especially applies to Government and Media. We expect honesty of others…or do we? We fully expect the media, lawyers, politicians mechanics, etc. to lie to us. John Huntsman is correct that we have a trust deficit.

He loves to play high and mighty but he is a career political hack, its great that he was able to pass so many great things with a Republican majority, that is pretty easy. Try dropping taxes, balancing a budget, and dissolving state agencies like Romney did in Massachusetts with a 85% liberal legislature. That is an accomplishment. Gingrich is just jealous that he could never had done this.

Those three are fellow law makers and against those three Obama has more chance to vilify their pasts and use their own words to sink them. The church meetinghouses are where most religious services take place. The temples are something different, and are attended by members less frequently in most cases.

FYI, Mormons go to CHURCH on Sunday. Temples are few and far between. Maybe half the Mormons I know go to the temple once a year…maybe. There’s a lot of “Depends” on who and how often. A lot of Mormons don’t go at all.
What worries me is that some zealots are so concerned about religion, they will embrace a candidate that will not stand a chance against our current leader. Moderates, as always, will be the ones to decide the election. If the right throws up (pun intended) a candidate the middle can’t stomach, the middle will stay home. And Obama will stay in office.

Our church is our same church whether I am attending in New Zealand, Tonga, Canada or here at home. Having said that, Romney’s “twenty year” stretch probably refers to his same congregation (Ward). Church is every Sunday. Temple worship is never on Sunday. We believe in weekly worship on the Lord’s day (Sunday) and we believe in Temple worship as often as time permits.
and BTW, stop saying Obama-Lite. Romney is 180 degrees different, which is exactly what we need. No other issue will matter when our Nation collapses financially. Romney is the only guy with a track record that even suggests his skills are appropriate for right now. As if anyone‘s life and accomplishments couldn’t be cherry picked to make them look bad? I am sure the results will be groundbreaking.
The reality is, if there are any out there who have begun to soften their Anti-Romney sentiments, they will be firmly reset. Newt has already attacked Romney for dicing up companies and firing Americans. Even though any run-of-the mill fiscal conservative understands that in order to save a business entity in financial duress you have to cut the fat, eliminate waste and unnecessary expenses and engage in a strategy to increase revenues through financial success. Inherently this means that employees who are living off the company’s purse while contributing little or nothing in return have to receive pink slips ( the same will of course be required to save this country)
He might as well have lunch in Zucotti Park while screening his new infomercial. This ought to be fun. Paul, who has served 11 terms in three different stages dating back to 1976, didn’t get a single law passed until 2009, when he authored a bill that allowed for the sale of a customs house in Galveston, Texas. Failure is often the norm in Congress, where only 4 percent of proposed bills get a President’s signature, but Paul’s approach to lawmaking is particularly suited to not getting things done.
Of the 620 bills sponsored by Ron Paul during his long career in the House of Representatives, only four have ever made it to a vote on the House floor and only one of those became an actual law. An analysis by The Washington Post shows that Paul’s success rate of 0.2 percent falls far below that of most legislators, as Paul has chosen to stand up for his personal crusades, rather that build coalitions for more popular, but less ambitious, proposals.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 12:51pmMy Florida vote mailed in this week was for Ron Paul. I hope more Florida Republicans vote the only man for the Constitution instead of for the RINO liberal Romney who is BUYING this election and who has campaigned for more years than Obama did as Romney has been at it since before 2008. He can afford to since he doesn’t have a job. .

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 12:24pmA Suffolk University tracking poll released during the debate found Romney leading, at 35 percent, among likely GOP primary voters. But that marked an 8 point slide for Romney since last Tuesday, according to the pollsters.Romney was followed by Paul at 20 percent, Huntsman at 11 percent, Gingrich at 9 percent, Santorum at 8 percent and Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 1 percent.

Posted on January 8, 2012 at 12:33pmRomney got the backing of 44% of likely GOP primary voters in a WMUR/University of New Hampshire poll, while 20% of voters said they supported Paul. The WMUR poll was taken between January 2-5, meaning voters were surveyed both before and after Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses.
In a separate NBC/Marist University poll, Romney stood at 42% while Paul was at 22%. That poll was taken entirely after results from Iowa were known.

Fox and NBC can shove their polls where the sun doesn’t shine.
