Gingrich Tops Romney in SC Primary, Santorum Third, Paul Fourth

Gingrich Tops Romney in SC Primary, Santorum Third, Paul Forth

(The Blaze/AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stormed to an upset win in the South Carolina primary Saturday night, dealing a sharp setback to former front-runner Mitt Romney and suddenly scrambling the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

“Thank you, South Carolina!” a jubilant Gingrich swiftly tweeted to his supporters. He appealed for a flood or donations for the next-up Jan. 31 primary. “Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida. Join our Moneybomb and donate now,” said his tweet.

Romney was unbowed. He vowed to contest for every vote in every state and unleashed a double-barreled attack on President Barack Obama and Gingrich simultaneously.

Referring to criticism of his business experience, Romney said, “When my opponents attack success and free enterprise, they’re not only attacking me, they’re attacking every person who dreams of a better future. He’s attacking you,” he told supporters, the closest he came to mentioning the night‘s primary winner’s name.

Already, Romney and a group that supports him were on the air in Florida with a significant television ad campaign, more than $7 million combined to date. Aides to the former Massachusetts governor had once dared hope that Florida would seal his nomination – if South Carolina didn’t first – but that strategy appeared to vanish along with the once-formidable lead he held in pre-primary polls.

Returns from 30 percent of the state’s precincts showed Gingrich gaining 41 percent of the vote, to 26 percent for Romney. Santorum had 18 percent and Paul 13.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul trailed badly in the South Carolina voting.

Gingrich Tops Romney in SC Primary, Santorum Third, Paul Forth

Exit polling showed Gingrich, the former House speaker, leading by a wide margin among the state’s heavy population of conservatives, tea party supporters and born-again Christians.

For the first time all year, Romney trailed among voters who said they cared most about picking a candidate who could defeat President Barack Obama this fall. Gingrich was ahead of the field for those voters’ support.

As the first Southern primary, South Carolina has been a proving ground for Republican presidential hopefuls in recent years. Since Ronald Reagan in 1980, every Republican contender who won the primary has gone on to capture the party’s nomination.

There were 25 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in South Carolina, but political momentum was the real prize with the race to pick an opponent to Obama still in its early stages.

Gingrich has won at least 15 delegates, with 10 still to be awarded. These are the first delegates Gingrich has won in a primary or caucus, though the race for delegates is still in the early stages. In all, Gingrich has 17 delegates, including endorsements from Republican National Committee members who will automatically attend the convention. Romney has 33 delegates.

It will take 1,144 delegates to win the GOP nomination.

In all, more than $12 million was spent on television ads by the candidates and their allies in South Carolina, much of it on attacks designed to degrade the support of rivals.

Interviews with voters as they left polling places showed nearly half saying their top priority was finding a candidate who could defeat Obama in the fall, followed by wishes for experience, strong moral character and true conservatism.

In a state with 9.9 percent unemployment, concern about the economy was high, and almost one-third of those voting reported a household member had lost a job in the past three years.

The exit poll was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters left polls at 35 randomly selected sites. The survey involved interviews with 1,577 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Santorum announced shortly after the polls closed that he would open his campaign in Florida on Sunday.

Paul has said he intends to skip the state and focus his efforts on caucus contests in Nevada on Feb. 4 and Missouri several days later.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, pinned his South Carolina hopes on a heavy turnout in parts of the state with large concentrations of social conservatives, the voters who carried him to his surprisingly strong showing in Iowa.

Paul had a modest campaign presence here after finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire. His call to withdraw U.S. troops from around the world was a tough sell in a state dotted with military installations and home to many veterans.

While Newt does carry more baggage than the Howell’s on the Minnow, his words do resonate with those of us who are sooo sick and tired of the MSM,Obama’s radical progressivism,Political Correctness,…Etc. Could it be,that despite our having reasonable doubts,He really DOES care about
the USA his grandchildren will inherit?? If so,he is the man most capaple of taking to Obozo in the fall.

Anyone who is a serial adulterer doesn’t care about his children or grandchildren. Newt said he acted as an historian and not as a lobbyist at Fannie and Freddie, do people believe that? He is a liar but he has a silver tongue. His ex-wife brings up his baggage and like a good demagogue he turns his response into something that appeals to the prejudices of his audience, a hate of the MSM. Just because the MSM are dirtbags does not mean that Newt is not one either.

“Could it be,that despite our having reasonable doubts,He really DOES care about the USA his grandchildren will inherit??”

That is a good question, one we do not know the answer to. A better question is, “does Newt care more about his country than he does about himself?”

I think we all know the answer to that one.

I totally agree. And I like the fact that the score is now 1:1:1. It would be SOOO nice to have a chance to vote in a primary instead of the race having already been decided by a small handful of states. May the best man win. And Newt . . . you will have my support if you win the Republican primary . . . and I won’t be holding my nose at the ballot box like I did in 2008. To be clear once again, I’m a Santorum supporter. BUT, I am confident that Gingrich’s toughness would expose Obama in a debate. I don’t feel that way, unfortunately, with Santorum. AND most definitely NOT with Romney.

It is hard to fake so passionately ones belief in something. When one truly believes the tendency is it grabs into the hearts of those around. Obama was able to do this last election and Obama truly believes in his worldly religion of socialism. I believe in order to beat Obama we need someone of equal passion and knowledge to pull those out of the grip of Obama’s mesmerizing power. Obama will eat up Romney and probably Paul and Santorum. Gingrich on the other hand is showing promise, his ability to with passion to intellectually articulate a clear path has grabbed me. Newt is becoming the only way we might have a chance to turn this ship around. Newt is not faking his position its coming from his heart.

I liked that he was willing to take some of the ideas of the other candidates and admit they may be right. Ron Paul has been right about the Fed for 25 years and it does give me hope to have that expressed by another candidate. I don’t care about any of the dirtbag dirty laundry or smut but care about fixing the country and who is best to do that. Personal spousal relationships and fidelity are not a job requirement for me. One by one the smear politics will take down anyone who wants to run because everyone can be smeared with something. He has ideas, he has accomplishments of working with the other side to achieve for his side, he listens and will take the pulse of the nation into account and even give another candidate credit for having been right for 25 years. If we could merge the qualities of all the candidates together maybe we could have our personal favorite candidate. At 68 he doesn’t need the money or the aggravation to endure the attacks that surely his baggage will bring. Cheating on a wife doesn‘t mean you don’t care about your grandchildren or children. If his own children can accept it who is anyone else to pass judgement on that?

So having a big government progressive republican is better than a big government progressive democrat like Obama? Newt has congresional ethics issues, he has a record of voting for big government spending, believes in man made global warming, mandates for health care, and Roosevelt was one of his favoite Presidents (who believed in eugenics, turned a resession into a great depression, stomped on the Consitution at every turn). Great liberal progressive idol wouldn’t you say?

This just shows that American’s are no longer able to think and reason as they fall for the slick and smooth talker every time. The democrats are licking their lips with Newt’s win. He has enough bagagge to fill a c-130 cargo plane.

If Americans are going to continue this idea of anyone but Obama we are still going to get stuck with the devil. As I have said before, if we had a majority of Republicans in the House and Senate that actually believed in a balanced budget and following the Constitution it really would not matter who the President was; they would not approve his appointments and they would not send any bill to the President that was not within the Constitution. They also have the power of the purse so they could get rid of any department through funding reductions.

By the way Republicans… why are we still operating without even an unbalanced budget? Governance through continuing resolutions. Way to go.

After extensive investigation, Gingrich was reprimanded and penalized $300,000. The one charge not dropped was a charge of claiming tax-exempt status for a college course run for political purposes. Subsequently, In 1999, the IRS cleared the organizations connected with the “Renewing American Civilization” courses under investigation for possible tax violations.

Nancy, I have been praying that people will wake up to the minipulation of the elite and their media, but I am seeing that people continue to follow the media blindly. You see this with people running from one candidate to the next, then back to the candidate they left before, all the while dismissing the one that really is a threat to the status quo. They use National Defense to tarnish his policies, and the people believe this as they have been taught fear in this realm. Although FDR was a progressive, he said one thing that holds true today, “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.” If we as people could pull ourselves together and not let the media’s fearmongering to affect us, we could think clearer on candidates. Withour the media bias, we could maybe get behind a candidate that wwould actually change the status quo and give the people the power they deserve in our government affairs. Sad that people are so lazy and fearful. I agree with you to pray for guidence in our thoughts and that God would show us our failings.

Of course we’re not electing a pastor. But, character counts anyway. Some of you people are beginning to sound like Clinton supporters, who called him a “moral” man, despite his actions. Who tried to make it a strength that he could “compartmentalize,“ when ”compartmentalization“ is the exact opposite of ”integrity. With Gingrich, oIt’s not just the serial adultery, and all the years of lying and betrayal that went along with that. It’s the payment of the largest fine for ethics violation in history, and being run out of Congress for that. It’s the influence peddling, then trying to convince people he was just being a “historian.” The man is utterly without principle. And, the “red meat” argument that we like because we agree with him, is not going to play that well with people in the mushy middle. He will just look like an angry dirtbag to them, and they are the ones who decide elections.

We are becoming a nation of dirtbags if the party of “family values” can support someone like Gingrich. If that is true, I’m afraid it is over for us. Freedom ultimately depends on a core of people with strong Judeo-Christian values.

      @Whatsupwiththat – the Fed isn’t actually a part of the governemnt – it’s a privately held institution.

@ Repugignore – Ron Paul want to RESTORE American founding principles, Newt wants to eradicate that as his mentor Alvin Toffler taught.
Newt said he was a ‘conservative futurist’ and that if anyone wanted to know what he was about all they had to do was read Toffler‘s book The Third Wave where Toffler wrote to our founding’parents’:
“The system of government you fashioned, including the principles on which you based it, is increasingly obsolete, and hence increasingly, if inadvertantly, oppressive and dangerous to our welfare. It must be radically changed and a new system of govt invented – a democracy for the 21st century… [the constitutional system the founders devised] have served us so well for so long, and now must, in its turn, die and be replaced.”

Now here’s Newt in 1995 addressing the Center for Strategic and Intl Affairs:
“The American challenge in leading the world is COMPOUNDED by our Constitution. Under our [constitutional system] – either we’re going to have to RETHINK our Constitution, or we’re going to have to rethink our process of decision-making. [I believe in a] VERY STRONG but limited government. I am FOR the UNITED NATIONS.”

Anyone who supports Newt must want what Newt wants – the death of Republic.

    I’m pleased this happened.

I know Glenn has been waging a campaign against Newt because Glenn calls him a Progressive, but in this case, I believe Newt has enough Founding values to turn the country away from the cliff the Obama administration is heading us.

If Newt goes all the way into the presidency, and I believe he will, I hope Glenn keeps the pressure on him. In know I will in my little corner of the universe. If people do not, Newt will do his own monkey-shines. But if people do, I believe Newt will go along and keep a lid on the most toxic things.

Glenn makes a mistake preaching all or nothing in a candidate at this point in the voyage of shaking off Progressivism. Our country on big government entitlements is like certain kinds of addicts. When they go cold turkey, they go into shock and die. They have to be weaned off their addiction through an intermediate stage.

I can’t think of anyone more qualified to oversee such an intermediate stage than Newt. He is competent as all get out and devoted to being transparent.

Later, getting the power away from Newt (and those he designates) and into the hands of someone with a real Founder’s profile will be a fistfight, but that is a battle for another day. One well worth fighting, too. But it is not the battle we need to fight right now.

It’s also possible the electing a moderate could lull America back to sleep. Having Obama as President has woken lots of people up but having someone ‘not quite as bad’ would put us back where we was before, a slow calculated death of Founding Father values.
Addicts have to hit bottom before realizing they have a problem that is killing them and they must change. America has been an addict. Addicted to ‘hand outs’, gov’t programs and decreased self-sufficiency. We have not hit rock bottom. Another 4 years of Obama would do that. But would we survive? Is this why Glenn has said if Newt is the candidate that he would surely vote 3rd Party, if there is one? Just thinking outloud……..

      Thank you, Miloark.

Our sourpuss friend with a foul attitude doesn’t read well. My words didn’t even give the impression that Glenn would stop Newt from being a Progressive, much less say this. Especially since I said we will later have to take the power back from Newt. I guess being disappointed makes some people too upset to make sense of what they read.

But I can try to be clearer. I believe keeping the heat on will keep Newt in line, meaning keep him from acting on his worst ideas. And I believe he has some really good ideas in him, not just Progressive thoughts. Keeping the heat on will keep his focus and actions on those good ideas.

For example, Sarah Palin seems to be in his orbit right now. If that keeps up, I think she will be a great influence on him.

But keeping the heat on is not the job of one person. Not Glenn’s. Not Sarah’s. We all have to do it. It’s not only doable with Newt, I believe in my heart of hearts that it will work. Just look at how he has changed. And look at the nature of his achievements.

Contrast this with Obama. Putting the heat on him didn’t do doodly-squat. He sat down that the trough of the public treasury and had a banquet for himself and his friends the likes of which the world has never seen. All in the name of the middle class. What heat could ever penetrate an appetite like that?

So Newt’s my man for this time in history. He probably won’t be later.

Don’t sell Gingrich short. He may well be just the scrapper we need to take to the press (which he has done well) and to Obama. Obama’s background is a pustule of false cover provided by the press, and I can’t wait for Gingrich to take it to him.

Remember that song Rush used to play?

    He’s a philanderer

    He’s a philanderer

He gets around round round round……………………….

I think the song was meant for Clinton or Teddy K but I think of it when I see that fat toad Newt.

I can’t stand the thought of him being POTUS. I’m all down with “anyone but Obama” but come on, Newt? Really? He’s Clinton with an R next to his name.

Things are so seriously wrong in this country, we need someone like Newt that knows where all the bodies are buried on Capitol Hill. I can’t know for sure if he is truly reformed and wiser now, and I hope he can rein in his arrogance, but I am so sick of the mealy mouths we have had in the Republican Party and I want someone capable of calling out Obama in a really direct inescapable way, I want Obama and his ideas nailed down, filleted and exposed for what they are and I think Newt may be the only one who can do that.

sort of like Iowa…where independents and democrats registered for the day as republicans…voted for Paul…and then switched back….hmm…can the same be said for SC…..??
don’t get me wrong…i think Newt is a horrible choice for the nominee….only better than Obama because of the people and party that will force him to at least govern from the center instead of the Socialist wing of the party…but Newt is still a big government progessive….

but yes…a said day for SC…the voters were duped by a slick talking man who caters to whichever base will get him elected… Hmm….sounds like something that happened about just over 3 years ago.. i can’t put my finger on it…wait for it…it will come to me… OH yeah.. the current Marxist POTUS….

The “Democrat Smear Machine” is nothing but a SMEAR ON AMERICA!

Pelosi and THE REST have NOTHING THEY CAN RISE ABOVE NEWT ABOUT -
BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN AND REMAIN TO BE IN THE GUTTER WITH
      LIES AND DECEPTION.

Obama has done nothing from the START, except to use lies and slight of hand
      tricks to decieve the PEOPLE.

WHO in their right mind would consider them as having America OR Americans

It’s cute that they mention Ron Paul though… when he’s fourth. When he’s second or third, they don’t even mention him at all!

Media bias is disgusting, but that adulterous slime Gingrich is the wrong one to be accusing the media of bias, he really IS a slimebag. Nobody is making anything up about him.

The Clintons have lowered my expectations to gutter levels. At least Newt came out with it and got divorced rather than the sham marriage the Clintons have. Save it for the election, Obamas record speaks volumes about his 3 years of failure.

@confederacy – there is lots for you to like in Newt then. He has been divorced not once but twice. In both cases the woman was very sick, once with cancer and one with MS. He cheated on both for extended periods of time. His own party removed him from the only position of power he has ever held and congress somehow find time to cost him $300K in fines for his behavior. This man has much for you to like as he now says it is all behind him. Forgive, but remember so next time he is not given opportunity to treat you the same way again.

His wives weren’t sick! You have it wrong, I am glad he was kicked out by his own party, because that shows he isn’t an establishment republican. In all however, I don’t care how his morals WERE, because I know he is a changed man! Stop giving Obama a second term!

So proud of SC for overlooking Newt’s cheating on his cancer stricken wife, then cheating on his MS stricken wife, being kicked out of the only leadership position he held in government BY HIS OWN PARTY and being fined $300K in the process. So proud that a family values state and party can support this guy. Christians my ass.

Axel/Tron – you can play a semantics game all you like. Call it paying a penalty, I called it a fine, it was not an agreement to pay “costs”.
Babeuf – you can contribute to the great rehabilitation of Newts character. I will not let history be rewritten to accomodate a lowlife who has proven not once but twice to be of very low moral standing in his marriages.
