Gingrich Wins SC Primary

(The/Blaze AP) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stormed to an upset win in the South Carolina primary Saturday night, dealing a sharp setback to former front-runner Mitt Romney and scrambling the race for the Republican presidential nomination. CBS video:

“Thank you, South Carolina!” Gingrich swiftly tweeted to his supporters. He appealed for a flood or donations for the next-up Jan. 31 primary. “Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida. Join our Moneybomb and donate now,” said his tweet.

Already, Romney and a group that supports him were on the air in Florida with a significant television ad campaign, more than $7 million combined to date. Aides to the former Massachusetts governor had once dared hope that Florida would seal his nomination – if South Carolina didn’t first – but that strategy appeared to vanish along with the once-formidable lead he held in pre-primary polls.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul trailed badly in the South Carolina voting.

Exit polling showed Gingrich, the former House speaker, leading by a wide margin among the state’s heavy population of conservatives, tea party supporters and born-again Christians.

For the first time all year, Romney trailed among voters who said they cared most about picking a candidate who could defeat President Barack Obama this fall. Gingrich was ahead of the field for those voters’ support.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, swept into South Carolina 11 days ago as the favorite after being pronounced the winner of the lead-off Iowa caucuses, then cruising to victory in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary.

But in the sometimes-surreal week that followed, he was stripped of his Iowa triumph – GOP officials there now say Santorum narrowly won – while former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman dropped out and endorsed Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry quit and backed Gingrich.

Romney responded awkwardly to questions about releasing his income tax returns, and about his investments in the Cayman Islands. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, benefited from two well-received debate performances while grappling with allegations by an ex-wife that he had once asked her for an open marriage so he could keep his mistress.

By primary eve, Romney was speculating openly about a lengthy battle for the nomination rather than the quick knockout that had seemed within his grasp only days earlier.

There were 25 Republican National Convention delegates at stake, but political momentum was the real prize with the race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama still in its early stages.

In all, more than $12 million was spent on television ads by the candidates and their allies in South Carolina, much of it on attacks designed to degrade the support of rivals.

Interviews with voters as they left polling places showed nearly half saying their top priority was finding a candidate who could defeat Obama in the fall, followed by wishes for experience, strong moral character and true conservatism.

In a state with 9.9 percent unemployment, concern about the economy was high, and almost one-third of those voting reported a household member had lost a job in the past three years.

The exit poll was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters left polls at 35 randomly selected sites. The survey involved interviews with 1,577 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Santorum announced shortly after the polls closed that he would open his campaign in Florida on Sunday.

Paul has said he intends to skip the state and focus his efforts on caucus contests in Nevada on Feb 4 and Missouri several days later.

One piece of primary day theater failed to materialize when the two men avoided crossing paths at Tommy’s Ham House in Greenville, packed with partisans holding signs that read either “Romney” or “Newt 2012.”

Romney rolled in earlier than expected, and had left by the time Gingrich arrived.

Santorum got a lift hours before the polls closed when the Iowa Republican Party declared him the winner of the caucuses on Jan. 3. Romney was pronounced the victor by eight votes initially, but on Thursday, party officials said a recount showed Santorum ahead by 34. Even so, they declared the outcome a tie.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, pinned his South Carolina hopes on a heavy turnout in parts of the state with large concentrations of social conservatives, the voters who carried him to his surprisingly strong showing in Iowa.

Paul had a modest campaign presence here after finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire. His call to withdraw U.S. troops from around the world was a tough sell in a state dotted with military installations and home to many veterans.

As the first Southern primary, South Carolina has been a proving ground for Republican presidential hopefuls in recent years.

Since Ronald Reagan in 1980, every Republican contender who won the primary has gone on to capture the party’s nomination.

Gingrich Wins SC Primary

Romney’s stumbles began even before his New Hampshire primary victory, when he told one audience that he had worried earlier in his career about the possibility of being laid off.

He gave a somewhat rambling, noncommittal response in a debate in Myrtle Beach last Monday when asked if he would release his tax returns before the primary. The following day, he told reporters that because most of his earnings come from investments, he paid about 15 percent of his income in taxes, roughly half the rate paid by millions of middle-class wage-earners. A day later, aides confirmed that some of his millions are invested in the Cayman Islands, although they said he did not use the offshore accounts as a tax haven.

Asked again at a debate in North Charleston on Thursday about releasing his taxes, his answer was anything but succinct and the audience appeared to boo.

Gingrich benefited from a shift in strategy that recalled his approach when he briefly soared to the top of the polls in Iowa. At mid-week he began airing a television commercial that dropped all references to Romney and his other rivals, and contended that he was the only Republican who could defeat Obama.

It featured several seconds from the first debate in which the audience cheered as he accused Obama of having put more Americans on food stamps than any other president.

Nor did Gingrich flinch when ex-wife Marianne said in an interview on ABC that he had been unfaithful for years before their divorce in 1999, and asked him for an open marriage.

Asked about the accusation in the opening moments of the second debate of the week, he unleashed an attack on ABC and debate host CNN and accused the “liberal news media” of trying to help Obama by attacking Republicans. His ex-wife’s account, he said, was untrue.

Thankfully, the rest of the nation won’t be lead around by the nose and taken for chumps like south Carolina. I can’t wait till Romney drops that chump in the debates…Gingrich won’t get much farther.

Sadly, if Newt gets the nomination and ends up in the election in November, the only choice we will have is between the Communist/Muslim and the Communist/Progressive. The only practical difference between those two choices, is the speed at which the train will be traveling, that takes us all to the concentration camp eventually.

Deja Vu all over again… Just four years ago, we got stuck with the absolute worst candidate to win the nomination, John McCain… Neither Obama nor McCain would be good for America. It was a win-win for the establishment and a lose-lose for the American people.

Now it appears, once again, we’re headed in the same direction… Newt Gingrich or Barack Obama? What difference does it make? Two open-border, One World Order Progressives and neither one good for America.

When will voters start doing their homework? When will they start thinking outside the box? When will they be able to see the forest through the trees? Nothing worse than voting for a candidate simply based on a couple of glossy ads or a couple of good stage performances!

Nothing will improve in this country if we can’t get enough people to open their eyes…

Santorum can easily win the rest of the primaries.

All he has to do is run ads with the audio and video of Romney and Gingrich.

Gingrich is using Romney’s own words against him in radio ads.

Santorum can run the same ad and say “How can a conservative hold those positions? He can’t! He’s not a conservative.

Then he plays the audio/video of Gingrich saying that FDR is the greatest president of the 20th century – from numerous speeches and then Santorum can say ‘ FDR made the depression last for years longer than in the rest of the world. Only the US had a GREAT depression. FDR mandated prices that businesses had to follow and if they gave customers a better deal, they went to jail. It happened! FDR lead a US ban on personal ownership of gold! He also set up internment camps in the US. How can a real conservative call FDR the greatest president of the US? Newt also calls himself a Wilsonian! Woodrow Wilson gave us the income tax, lobbyists, segregation of the military and post office and a US department of misinformation and propaganda to keep the American public misinformed. Wilson did not believe that we are each born with with pre existing rights! How can any conservative call himself a Wilsonian? I am the real Conservative. Vote Santorum 2012!”!

He can then go back to putting his ideas forth, but first, he has to educate the electorate as to who the others are.

For years the media has told us we have to nominate a moderate centrist republican. Someone who will play nice and not offend the media or the independents. We saw how that worked out, Bush, Bush, McCain. Even when we won, we lost and “they” got to pick our nominee.

Newt is a true conservative and not a McCain-Romney moderate. His record on taxes, deficits, budget, govt spending, Guns, abortion, school choice etc; has been excellent. There are some, like Beck who will take snippets from millions of spoken words and try to define Newt as a progressive. Newt’s record completely contradict that assertion. He is not a big government progressive or a moderate, he is a CONSERVATIVE!

It is all pretty simple when you break them down one by one. Gingrich by far has the intellectual abilities to knock Obama out of the White House. He is a debate specialist. Romney can’t debate his way out of a wet paper bag. Santorum‘s only link in life is to promote the social issues which are of no concern to today’s voters. Plus, Santorum has already been defeated by one of Pennsylvania’s least capable Senators in the past 200 years, Casey. If Santorum lost to Casey for a Senate seat, what will Obama do to him? The answer is very easy. Ron Paul? Just the mere mention of his name will cause people to run out of the voting booth and back home to hide in their closets waiting for the end of days to come.

So we are left with Newt. Baggage? Absolutely. What person with over 30 years in Washington politics would not have baggage. But let’s look at the so-called “ethics” violations. The charges came down to “lying” to the Ethics Committee and a tax evasion claim. Both were summarily discharged at a later date. Newt did pay a “fine” to the House of $300k just to make the charges go away.
What did Newt do? 1. Declared war on welfare. 2. Called for term limits for all Congressional politicians. (I do believe this is the major reason why he was vilified and was forced to step down). 3. Forced Clinton to pass a balance budget by shutting down the US Government.

Four YEARS LATER STUPID AMERICANS are support another CLOWN with ties to RADICAL THINKERS.

WHY DOES Gingrich call Himself a “CONSERVATIVE FUTURIST”?

Why DOES Gingrich support Alvin TOFFLER’S “THIRD WAVE” and “NEW CIVILIZATION”?

In the final chapter of “The Third Wave,“ TOFFLER WROTE a letter to ”our founding parents” that reads:

“For the system of government you fashioned, including the very principles on which you based it, is increasingly obsolete, and hence increasingly, if inadvertently, oppressive and dangerous to our welfare. It must be radically changed and a new system of government invented — a democracy for the twenty-first century…”

Toffler closed his letter to our founding parents with:

“For this wisdom, above all, I thank Mr. Jefferson, who helped create THE SYSTEM THAT SERVED US WELL FOR SO LONG, and that NOW MUST, in its turn, DIE AND BE REPLACED”

Gingrich WROTE the FORWARD to TOFFLER‘S’ book, “CREATING a NEW CIVILIZATION.” which suggests that the NEW CIVILIZATION will REPLACE CHRISTIANITY with secular humanism:

“I first began working with the Toffler’s in the early 1970s on a concept called anticipatory democracy. For twenty years we have worked to develop a future-conscious politics and popular understanding that would make it easier for America to make the transition from the Second Wave civilization – which is clearly dying – to the emerging, but in many ways undefined and not

WHY WOULD TAMPA FL PURPOSELY MAKE THEIR RETURN ABSENTEE BALLOTS SO WEAK AND FRAUD PRONE?

The absentee ballots are a HUGE SECURITY INVITE VOTER FRAUD JOKE in Tampa Floirda.

The large absentee ballot return envelop flap HAS NO GLUE on the sides leaving it GAPPING OPEN and the bottom of the envelope flap has glue but a pathetically amount and it is WEAK.

I wet my envelop ballot and closed it and took it to the mail box. A little later WORRIED, I went back and took it and used MY THUMB ONLY and opened up my ballot with only a tiny bit of damage – NO PROBLEM. I then used MY OWN GLUE to GLUE down both sides and bottom of the return envelope flap.

My ballot has been in over a week. I have visions of voters who DID NOT USE THEIR OWN GLUE having their ballots opened and DESTROYED if they voted for the wrong person either by the post officer UNION employees or a democrat in the elections office where the ballots are stored.

WHY WOULD TAMPA FL PURPOSELY MAKE THEIR RETURN ABSENTEE BALLOTS SO WEAK AND FRAUD PRONE?

The only candidate on the GOP side with a chance against Obama in a election, not a debate is Ron Paul. The other three offer versions of the same thing.

More wars, more debt, less freedoms. How can they go against Obama when they are running on the same platform.

I am STRICTLY for the Constitution.

Ron Paul is STRICTLY for the Constitution. The others are various degrees of progressives.

Ron Paul would eliminate the TSA, Patrot Act, close every overseas base and open MORE bases here in the states on the border where we need them. He will eliminate the EPA, Dept of Education, Dept of Energy and ALL of them and give the states back the right to run their own states.

Ron Paul will PHASE OUT social security enursing the people on it and those over 45 or 50 continue to get it but everytone else gets a Brazel style IRA IN THEIR OWN NAME which politicians cannot raid.

Ron Paul will implement a MIRROR IMAGE trade agreement. What they do to us – we do to them. If they VAT our goods coming into their country, we VAT tax their goods coming here at the same rate. Every country is treated EXACTLY as they treat us – MIRROR IMAGE.

Gingrich, Santorum, Bachman, Romney will KEEP EVERYTHING above. I don’t want any of them but especially NOT RINO ROMNEY as he is TOO big government RomneyCare.

I didn’t like Perry on immigration but would have voted for him as my 2nd choice because he would eliminate WHOLE DEPARTMENTS also just like Ron Paul and put Congress on a half year. Excellent and makes up for his immigration stance.

Our country is doomed. I’m just watching on the sidelines as RINOs fight amount their progressive choices against a progressive Obama.

Hard to believe from the comments that anyone has an understanding of what forgiveness means. What if Newt really has changed his perceptions regarding his faith and how to live it. Seems most people buy into Glenn‘s hypothesis of Newt’s stance on the issues. Sorry, listening to Romney I see another McCain facing Obama. I’m not going to buy that White Horse. There are some issues with Newt that I don’t appreciate. But, he is definitely the one to articulate conservative principles the best of all the candidates. Whether you like it or not, Newt does have a record of producing results on conservative issues. I think Newt is the best chance to make Obama look like more of an idiot, I don’t believe he will be afraid to look nasty to Obama. Just the facts, ma’am.
My favorite candidates were all run out on innuendo and bad press from the beginning. I’m glad we still have something of a choice, there is definitely a wide range of personalities represented among our candidates. By the way, I don’t think it matters who the GOP candidate is. If the GOP looks like they may take it (regardless of candidate) a third party will come out to destroy their chances. Not to mention the amount of fraud that will take place to ensure an Obama victory.
Besides, the people offended by evangelicals and Bible Belt choosing Newt, you need to understand that the USA is no longer a Christian nation. The only thing Obama has gotten right this term.

Both are In Your FACE, BIG IDEAS, I”M GONNA TRANSFORM WASHINGTON guys.

      NEITHER one is a LEADER.

For God’s sake people, listen to what the PEOPLE WHO KNOW HIM Say About Newt Gingrich.

      http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=5766

Newt Gingrich is a political chameleon that has inexplicably managed to fool conservatives for 30 years. He is a globalist to the bone and supports every opportunity to erode American sovereignty and the constitution. He disguises his statist positions with an abundance of flip-flopping and pandering as needed. He has a long history of expanding the Federal Government and deficit spending. He is the very definition of an Establishment Insider.

Only 1 candidate has consistantly tied or beat BHO in the national polls – Mitt Romney. Newt might win the nomination, but he will lose in the general election because there are a lot of people out there who will never vote for a bully like Gingrich. He might win the battle but then lose the war. And wait until the MSM starts parading his sordid past before the cameras… no wonder Pelosi was rubbing her hands with glee at the prospect of a Gingrich nomination.

I wish that we could elect an official. Who wins has the money. Ok Newt wins, he has less than Romney. Their both millionaires. Until we can vote for principal instead of money we’re doomed. It’s just a game.Obummer has a billions, how does that happen. A dum cowboy

He absolutely IS a bully. The media needs to stand up to him, turn down his mic, and put him in his place.

Wow, Say good-bye to the election. Here comes Obama !! You stupid idiots in South Carolina. This is proof to me that the I no longer consider myself part of the Conservative party. I will change my registration to Independent and no longer support the pathetic idiots on the right. You keep putting these progressive candidates up there, as Newt smeared Romney, did nothing but talk dirty on him, bad mouth, call him a liar, everything under the sun. Never heard a word of that come from Romney’s mouth. The Super PACs are another story, but that is on both side and not directly from the candidate. Newt has done nothing but talk crap. You people want to support a progressive go right ahead. I am not doing it again. You freaking bigots, and do I wonder how many of you are closet racists, seriously. Newt will get shredded by the liberal media. The media keeps saying the establishment candidate is Romney, meanwhile, if you are a Romney supporter, as I am, you would see how he gets bashed from every angle, every outlet, especially any spokes person who is an Evangelical. You Evangelicals have ruined the election and brought us every idiot that has won and lost dating back to the 90′s. Freaking hypocrites…. Can’t even stand behind Santorum, how sick is that. That is pure proof of bigotry and where my anger resides. I can’t count myself part of so many people who are so idiotic they have been fooled by the media supporting Newt Gingrich. Just as Obama wants. Way to go Bible belt !!

Romney of Romneycare, that stuttering 1%er, that tax dodger who throws people out of work while raking in millions… that Romney? Oh yeah, like he has a snowball’s chance in hell of beating Obama!
But, by all means, let’s call Newt a “progressive” and buy into the media elites’ choice of Romney to lose against Obama. By all means, let’s pay attention to the ex-wife with an ancient ax to grind.

Both Newt and Mitt have past issues (seems like a lot more on Newt’s side), but only one of them seems to be honest. Doesn’t that count for EVERYTHING?

They base it on the exit polls. I wish they would just wait till all precincts were reporting and every last vote was counted.
