Gingrich‘s ’06 Memos Praised Romney’s Health Care Plan: ‘The Most Interesting Effort’

Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich doesn’t have much love for the health care law that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney enacted back in 2006. But has he always been so adamantly opposed to the law?

“Your plan essentially is one more big-government, bureaucratic, high-cost system,” Gingrich told Romney during a debate this past October in Las Vegas. Gingrich went on to claim that Romney’s approach was “from the top down” — something Gingrich now opposes.
While this quote, among others, highlights the former House Speaker’s attempt to backtrack on his past support for a federal health insurance mandate, according to the Wall Street Journal, Gingrich actually voiced support for Romney’s law back in 2006.
After the measure was passed, Gingrich’s former consulting company, the Center for Health Transformation, published a 2006 newsletter that read, ”The health bill that Governor Romney signed into law this month has tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system.”

But that’s not all. The two-page analysis (called “Newt Notes”), which was found online by the Journal, continues, “We agree entirely with Governor Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans.”
Here’s a portion of the newsletter (read the entire document here):

While the Romney camp has declined to comment on this newfound development, R.C. Hammond, a Gingrich spokesperson, is dismissing the find and claiming that the newsletter also critiques the law. “Being critical…isn’t endorsing it,” Hammond said, while going on to say that Gingrich didn’t write the published essay. The Journal continues, detailing some of the hesitations that the newsletter did originally highlight:
The Newt Notes essay backed the Massachusetts law’s requirement that most residents carry insurance or pay a fee, which is at the center of President Obama‘s health law and next year’s Supreme Court case over whether the federal requirement violates the Constitution. [...]
At the same time, the essay cautioned that some piece of the Massachusetts plan may not work. It warned that the state has an “exhaustive” list of health-coverage requirements that prohibit insurers from offering basic plans with high deductibles. It predicted that state residents earning little more than $30,000 a year– the threshold for an individual to qualify for subsidized coverage– would be “in jeopardy of being priced out of the system.” Instead, the newsletter said, “we propose that a more realistic approach might be to limit the mandate to those individuals earning upward of $54,000 per year.”
While these hesitations were surely presented, a follow-up newsletter in August 2006 called Romney’s plan, ”the most interesting effort to solve the uninsured problem in America today.“ It apparently also offered praise for ”a Republican governor working with a Democratic state legislature to find a bipartisan reform that is based on market-oriented principles.”
If this, indeed, checks out as a “flip-flop,” it will follow a series of alleged changes of heart that critics have held against Gingrich. From the individual mandate to climate change, the presidential candidate has had some noteworthy evolutions of ideological thought.

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 12:05pmWhen Jackie Gingrich and her daughters moved from their other home in Fairfax, Virginia, back to their house in Carrollton, Georgia, there were “no lights, no heat, no water, no food in the home,” former Gingrich friend and academic colleague Carter said.
Carter, who helped collect donations for the family, said Gingrich “wouldn’t give them a dime” in the first months of the separation.
“We had a food drive at First Baptist Church,” Carter said. “The deacons went down and stocked her pantry.”
Johnson, the former state legislator who was in Gingrich’s Sunday school class, said when the church’s minister asked him to donate money, he gave $100 to the fund.
A judge ordered Gingrich to appear in court a week after his wife filed her complaint. The result was a ruling that he bring the utility bills up to date and begin paying his wife $700 a month in temporary support until the case was settled.
More about Gingrich lies, etc. with new divorce papers revealed:

They give him a pass because against his Republican opponents, his depth of knowledge/experience can’t be matched. He still polls neck & neck with Romney & Paul, but when members are asked which of these three can edge Obama in policy & economics, they trend towards Gingrich. Paul’s Marshall Plan approach kills him, except with true isolationists. This is not an endorsement of Gingrich. Posted on December 27, 2011 at 1:40pmGingrich’s rhetoric and deeds are not “isolated incidents.” There is a clear pattern. He is a Rockefeller Republican. He favors government central planning.
When he thought the country was moving to the right, he tried to get at the head of it with the Contract with America–so far so good. The problem came when he abandoned that effort. Those from the class of ‘94 who were serious about passing legislation were later abandoned by Gingrich. He called them “extremists” and “cannibals.” Do a Google search. The sordid history is all there. Do some of you not remember, or are you just unaware?
Someone said that a vote for Dr. Paul was a vote for Obama because “he can’t win.” They told me he couldn’t win Iowa too, but it looks like that is probably going to happen.
The truth is that establishment Republican drones can win (I think anyone will beat Obama because high inflation is coming by summer given the growth in the money supply over the last year–that FED funny money is finally being released into the economy by Fed. Reserve member banks). That’s just the problem though. Perry, Gingrich, Romney, Bachmann, et al will not change the government’s Wilsonian foreign policy. They will not change our doomed, centrally planned monetary system. They ignore the Constitution’s instructions on gold/silver monies. They offer no real cuts in the trillions.
If the above get into office, you get a statist with an R behind his/her name instead of a D.

The reason Mitt Romney is an awful candidate is because he has a “propensity to lie in front of a crowd” (Read: Saul Alinsky). Gingrich is an even worse offender because he spins everything he’s told into good news, to a point where he is in stark contrast to reality (he wouldn‘t even admit he was wrong in his advocation of GSE’s in Freddie Mac, in the most recent debate!). Let’s make this very clear…EVERY GOP CANDIDATE WILL REPEAL OBAMACARE because the legislation is a monstrosity of cronyism and taxation. For instance…Obamacare bans the extension and building of new physician owned hospitals. Why? Because the AHA (American Hospital Association, Read: Heavily unionized and an Obama backer) wanted the competition taken out. But Paul does dissent from contemporary Republican orthodoxy on foreign policy. It is without question foreign policy that makes Paul “unelectable” in the eyes of the Republican establishment but Romney and Gingrich ultimately acceptable despite their countless big-government offenses.
Even the slightest hint that a Republican candidate could be wandering off the neocon reservation causes immediate alarm. During a Republican debate in June, Romney dared to say: “It’s time for us to bring our troops home as soon as we possibly can … our troops shouldn’t go off and try and fight a war of independence for another nation.”
Politico’s Ben Smith reported: “Danielle Pletka, vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said her inbox was flooded Tuesday morning with emails calling Romney’s comments a ‘disaster.’”
“I’d thought of Romney as a mainstream Republican — supporting American strength and American leadership, but this doesn’t reflect that,” she said. “Romney has proven himself a little bit of a weathervane and I guess he senses that positioning himself in this place is good for his campaign — attempting to appease Ron Paul’s constituents without actually being Ron Paul.”

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 9:21amGingrich and Romney are communists.
Do not trust these ultra wealthy criminals. They do not defend the Constitution or our Bill of Rights. They seek only to enrich themselves, their families, and their friends by feeding on the American people.
Those who serve in Congress should emerge with less wealth than when they entered. They should be sacrificing for the nation and serving the people. Congress in not a job opportunity it is holy obligation. Men like Romney and Gingrich have been playing Americans for fools long enough.

Report Post »What words did I put in his mouth? Are you denying he FORCED romneycare on his state? If you do you’ll lose ALL credibility, If your taking issue with my statement that he would have forced it on the rest of the states, Can you give us proof he would not have? And statements he made against it AFTER WE THE PEOPLE rejected his and obamas idea don’t count.

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 1:25pmAs a Massachusetts resident, I would like to say that there is no way that Romney forced “Romneycare” on the residents of the state….you have to remember that the state legislature in Massachusetts is overwhelmingly Democrat, and quite liberal at that. Just look at the record of our Republican senator, Scott Brown~he can hardly be called ultraconservative. Romney has admitted he had to make some concessions and would have liked to have seen some things done differently, but would not have gotten it past the legislature. As for Obamacare being the same as Romneycare, I think the biggest difference is that Obamacare will ultimately lead to government run socialized medicine, putting insurance companies out of business and forcing companies to discontinue offering self-insured private plans. There is no one-size fits all, and what works for one state may not work for others. The federal government, according to the constitution, is in place to protect our borders and our freedoms and MAINTAIN STATE SOVEREIGNTY. Nothing short of a repeal of Obamacare will do. Let each state figure out for itself what is best, and allow insurance companies to sell policies across state lines.

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 9:10amI don’t like nationalized healthcare of any kind. However, I will be the first to admit that the current system of health insurance is broken and fleeces many Americans to the point of ra pe. Mitt was right to do something on a state level. Obama is constitutionally wrong to do anything on the federal level. We need to remember that when criticizing Mitt for trying to find a solution to a national pandemic. We have way too many people without proper healthcare because we gave the power to the insurance companies.

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 9:24amI agree that the States should be the ones who experiment with this issue because something has to be done. According to the Constitution – the Federal Government ONLY has those powers enumerated by the Contitution. On the other hand, the States have all other powers except those RESTRICTED by the Constitution.

Posted on December 27, 2011 at 9:03amLet’s kick Newt again over an issue that has already been discussed this year. Responses to this issue have been on his webite “newt.org” for month’s. This is not news by any stretch. As Glenn would say “Do your own research”. For those of you that won’t do it for yourself; the decision to support the individual mandate, was to counter “Hillary Care” Yes Newt did support the individual mandate. He has also since said after further review, the idea of a national individual mandate is wrong. This was even brought up in the debates and was responded to by Newt. For those of you that choose to check out Newt.org, don’t stop with just the individual mandate portion. Look at Newt’s proposals in the 21st Century Contract With America. Nobody else has the ability to reach across the aisle and make things happen in Washington again!
