Gingrich‘s New Ad Attacks ’Timid’ Romney

Following a disappointing fourth place finish in Tuesday’s Iowa caucuses, Newt Gingrich made good on his promise to go after Mitt Romney, releasing a new ad Thursday going after Romney by name.

(Related: Rush Limbaugh: ‘Newt’s in This to Destroy Romney Now’)

The ad seeks to paint Romney’s economic plan as “timid” and “virtually identical to Obama’s failed policy,” using critical quotes from Forbes and the Wall Street Journal. Gingrich’s plan, meanwhile, is “a powerful plan for growing our economy and creating new jobs.”

The Gingrich campaign said the spot would begin running Thursday in New Hampshire and South Carolina. As the New York Times noted, it’s the first time Gingrich has mentioned Romney by name in an ad. Though not a “slashing attack,“ its ”goes further than any previous effort” by the former House Speaker, who blasted Romney in recent weeks for a slew of negative ads from a super PAC run by Romney supporters.

But after Tuesday’s caucus results, Gingrich vowed to go on the offensive and hit Romney hard with “the truth.”

“We are not going to go out and run nasty ads, but I do reserve the right to tell the truth,” Gingrich said. “If the truth seems negative, that may be more a comment on his [Romney’s] record than the nature of politics.”

Huckabee’s strategy worked because he split the conservative vote with Romney, as McCain was the perceived moderate. This time, Newt is going to split the conservative vote with Santorum, as Romney is the perceived moderate. Romney learned from the last go round, and has wisely put himself in a position where he is not relying on votes that will easily spread between other conservatives.

If Newt wanted to hurt Romney, the best thing he could do is drop out and endorse Santorum… but he is far too arrogant for that.

Bodybag, that article was garbage. It assumes two things: One, that people won‘t care about Newt’s personal baggage, and two, that the media is going to treat Newt the same way it will treat Obama.
How in the world is bashing Newt on taking money from Freddie Mac going to bring new scrutiny on Obama’s affiliation with Bill Ayers? The media didn’t care last time, and they definitely aren’t going to care this time.

Mr. Sowell is clearly desperately trying to convince himself that Newt is a viable candidate.

Newt Gingrich Shows He Can Throw a Directed Punch

      by Erick Erickson

      Thursday, January 5th

The fear is that Newt Gingrich can not throw a targeted punch at Mitt Romney, that he is only capable of a crazy melee.

Today, Gingrich is proving his critics wrong.

One of the biggest knocks on Romney is his timidity in the face of Barack Obama. He won’t use the word “socialist,” etc. He won’t be bold with his own plans, etc. Well, Gingrich is going straight to that weakness and I think it works.

By the way, this is also the perfect way to show why the other guy can’t beat Obama while keeping the focus on Obama

Besides, if Gingrich wasn’t aware, Ron Paul’s anti-Newt messages were far more hurtful than anything Romney put out. Granted, the endorsements that Romney garnered because the political class was very afraid of having Newt in the White House probably hurt a bit, too.

This is the worst of the GOP candidates, con man, huckster, charlatan, snake oil salesman. The worst whiner of all times, he and his ego rode the bubble for a few weeks and he declared himself the nominee(what an egotistical fool), then the bubble bust. He left Iowa an angry, broken old man out for vengeance without one delegate.. This is a disgrace and he should drop out, it certainly doesn’t help the GOP. The only reason some were supporting this very negative person was because they thought he could take their message of hate to Obama, yet overlooked his negative baggage of ethics, wheeling/dealing taking millions from Freddy Mac and the health care insurance industry under the guise of consulting/lobbying?, adultery on and on.But their main drive was a means to an end, that is why they have lost and this guy is history because their ideas was on the wrong side of ethical behavior.

McCain is a millstone around Mitts neck. I bet Santorum let out a sigh of relief when John’s endorsement went to Romney. The easy let down that Mitt could have used “its not you it’s me,thanks but no thanks” All Mitt needs now is for the Donald to come out and endorse him. Then Mitt will likely go under, hopefully taking those two progressives with him.

This is a calculated endorsement. McCain has a lot of fans in New Hampshire. Attacking Romney for getting McCain’s support will only backfire. Once the primary is over, Romney will drop McCain like a bad habit. Then, it is off to SC to campaign with Nikki Haley… by which point the memory of McCain’s endorsement will have already faded.

Contrast this kind of strategy with Newt’s… lack thereof… and tell me Newt stands a chance in the general election.

You can tell, it is said, alot about someone by observing the people he chooses to have close to him. After I had FINALLY convinced myself that I “could” vote for Romney, Progressive, elitist, metaly challenged John “Loser” McCain comes out and endorses him. I’m not “pitching” any of the other candidates in this post, but, at the same time, I can’t hold my nose for long enough to vote for another elitist, faux-conservative, Progressive in the Republican Party. Glenn Beck has always been right. There are Progressives in BOTH parties and the top three on the R side in my book are John McLame, Lindsey Graham, and Mitt Romney. No sir…No Obamney for me. I will pull the lever for whomever in the R Party has the best chance of taking down Romney…which translates into taking down Obama. If folks really researched Romney and his flops, they would recognize that MR and BO have one thing in common…They would be convinced the ocean is purple if it would garner themselves votes. While Santorum was not my first choice, maybe it would be refreshing to have someone in the WH who actually has personal values and principles and would govern to honor them….even if I disagree with some of his positions. At least with Santorum, there is little need to “wonder” what he actually believes.

Gramma B…I hear what you‘re saying but I’;ve been around long enough that I can’t vote again for a compromise candidate. Regarding the endorsements, I like Christy personally, but if you think he’s Conservative, you are wrong. Yes, he will stand up to the unions and that’s a good thing, but Conservative…no he is not. Ann Coulter endorsed Romney ONLY after he brought Christy into the tent. Coulter is so in love with Christy that she would have supported whomever he endorsed, regardless of who that might have been. Christine O’Donnell did more disservice to the TEA Party than anyone in the Republican Party (and I’ve been a regional TEA Party organizer from the beginning of the movement). Nikki Haley, I will grant you is a true Conservative so I just have to disagree with her. Gramma, I do hear what you are saying, and, in fact, I have said the same things dozens of times over the past three decades to others. The problem, though, is this. Since Reagan, we have not elected a true Conservative…many times because of the “electability” issue. “We can’t take a chance that we run a candidate that might not get the indie vote”. That pattern of thought has us with a Communist in the WH with Communists in ever growing numbers scattered throughout the Administration. If this Nation is so uninformed as to elect Barry again because the alternative is “too Conservative”, we’re screwed anyway. I can‘t fathom that a majority of America’s voters wouldn’t vote for a toas

One more thing. Go back in your mind four years. Do you remember what the principle factor was that got McLame nominated by the Republicans? Yeah, it was….He was the most electable! The elites made sure that the public understood that if we nominated anyone else, they could not beat Obama! How’d that work out for the Country? I decided then that our nomination of someone because they had the best chance to beat Obama was seriously stupid. We (the Rs) nominated him for that very reason…and the fact is, had McLame been elected, we would not be as bad off as we are, but in the end, Progressives and the elite media are, well…Progressives and the elite media. WE THE PEOPLE should decide elections and, frankly, I have more confidence in MY opinion to pick a leader that I do in politicians and “media whores”. Thanks for listening

I think Newt can not only beat Obama, but obliterate him. Sorry, but I truly believe Newt knows how the system works and can actually clean house. And if half the Republican party will not support him, well, I guess that would be the RINO population we all know exists, and our job as voters is to ensure the RINO population is reduced to get this country back on the right track. Romneycare — which I don’t particularly like — is different than Obamacare in at least one important respect. Romneycare is designed to keep all services and insurance in the private sector. Obamacare is designed to destroy the private sector.

Romneycare was designed for Romney by the Heritage Foundation — one of the most reliably conservative think tanks in America. The individual mandate, which has become the hot button and our best chance of overturning Obamacare through the courts, was seen at the time as a “conservative” move. Here’s why.

The states were already operating under a federal mandate of “free health care for all.” Federal law requires hospitals to treat anyone who shows up. So all those costs were already being shifted (1) to people who buy insurance and (2) to taxpayers. Since states and hospitals were forbidden from turning away the freeloaders, the individual mandate was an attempt to force people to take “individual responsibility” for their own health care costs. While I don’t like it very much, I can’t think of any other state solution to the freeloader problem. Can you?

We Independents do not like blurred lines between church and state and we definitely do not like obstructionism in government. It creates gridlock and government can’t function. The American people are tired of the antics of the tea party and the chaos they have created, they are fed up with the my way or the highway,no compromise crowd. Many news commentators agree that Newt is the most intelligent of the candidates, the best debater, probably best at turning the country around and mostly likely the one to defeat Obama but because of his baggage, he is done. That makes no sense. If he is all these things as they say, then who cares about the baggage? I don’t agree with the Media pushing Romney as the one to defeat BO. Romney can be timid because his PACs are doing his dirty work, they are the ones with the dirty hands. I for one am getting tired of people thinking we have to go with Romney because the independents will go with him instead of Obama and none of the others running. Well, if the independences are more loyal to Obama than they are the Constitution maybe they should choose Obama. Romney is Obama lite, he is “settling”, it is time to take a stand and be counted. If Independents are so screwed up that they can not see what is going on, there is no hope for this country, it is going down and going down hard. Why prostitue yourself for the sake of appealing to the Independents, surely not all of them are Progressives. When Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death” he took a stand, a stand that our forefathers took, uncompromising to their principles, I am to the point where, take a stand on principle let the Independents figure out what they are on their own. The country is on the skids, it is time to take the hard stand like our forefathers did.

why? – - because the religion thing. – - sad, right? To me, thats just downright stupid and ignorant. – — Huckabee is blinded by his many years in his minnistry that have it out for Mormons. – -He could live next door to a family of good tithe paying mormons who raise their family to love God and serve their neighbors . .which most do.. as a whole Mormons are good – kind Christians who live a Christ centered life, loving God, country and family. – -but to obtuse religious zealots who;ve been told their whole life Mormons are evil . .they can’t wrap their head around common sense. – but ya. His surge (Rick S) is fueled by the anti Mormon bigotry, look at Iowa, he polled less then 5-6% the Evangelicals tell their people to fall in behind him, to stop the Mormon, he shoots up to 24%

What % Iowa refused to Vote for Mitt JUST BECAUSE he is Mormon ? (more refused because his policy but these just because his faith) about 35% of Evangelicals, iirc. how many Evangelicals went to vote last night ? 57% so what is 35% of 57% ? 19% take his base 5-6% add the bigots, and you got his total.

Newt’s A PitBull! Whereas Romney’s wishy-washy and slippery. Newt would grab Romney by the neck and shake him until only the real Romney was left.

By the way, speaking to your earlier comment re: an anti-Mormon bias. It’s not about Romney being a Mormon. It’s about Romney being a wishy-washy, flip-flopper. Which has been brought up many times before, ad nauseam.

It appears that in attempts to draw attention away from Romney‘s slip’n and slide’n, the pro-Romneys insist on playing that “anti-Mormon-card.“ Kinda like the BHOs like to play either the ”race-card” and/or the “mud-slinging-card.”

Newt might be down, but he’s not out. That caucus was in only one state, remember. The rest of America hasn’t spoken yet.

Let’s cut to the chaste…GET it together America-
after all, this IS the most important election ever !

Here’s a Limbaugh recollection I will NEVER forget-
it was sometime in mid 2008,
we moved & I was still unpacking endless boxes.
Rush’s radio show was on & I was in & out of the room.
I heard him interviewing someone whose calm voice sounded familiar
but name I did not catch.
I was completely enthralled, this fellow obviously loved America & had a zillion, bright
ways of ensuring her greatness…he was unlike anyone I’ve ever heard….AMAZING !

This is the smartest guy on earth, a patriotic American with Presidential timber to boot.
Who the heck is this guy ?
I sat down, unwilling to busy myself & miss out on his name.
When the interview came to an end, finally, Rush said, “Thanks, for coming on, Newt” !
Everything I thought I knew about him or didn’t know changed with THAT interview.

    I have NEVER forgotten Rush’s interview & Gingrich’s insight.
Since that day, I’ve listened intently to all he says.

The politicians who besmirch Newt are the SAME ones who need to GO.
    Doesn’t THAT tell you something?
Romney & the RNC are ramming their poster boy down our throats.
No more Mr. Nice Guy, Fight like hell, NEWT !

Gingrich IS the strong, wise LEADER America needs.
Everything follows, EVERYTHING gets BETTER with a real LEADER.
Don’t get this wrong, America, here’s OUR chance to rise & recover.

I have to admit that Newt is probably the smartest guy running but it doesn’t change the fact he has been on both sides of just about every issue imaginable. I used to admire the man when he was speaker of the house but I know from his own admissions that he is not a Constitutional conservative and he would stretch bend and completely ignore the Constitution if he thought he could further his agenda. Not a man that would relinquish power that has been gained, his ego wouldn’t allow that.

If you started following him in 2008, that means you missed it in 2006 when he praised Romney and MA for their health plan.

You missed his bill in 1987 which would have reinstated the fairness doctrine.

You missed his quote in 2007 when he lauded Freddie and Fannie (GSEs)… “The housing GSEs have made an important contribution to homeownership and the housing finance system. We have a much more liquid and stable housing finance system than we would have without the GSEs. And making homeownership more accessible and affordable is a policy goal I believe conservatives should embrace. Millions of people have entered the middle class through building wealth in their homes, and there is a lot of evidence that homeownership contributes to stable families and communities. THESE ARE THE RESULTS I THINK CONSERVATIVES SHOULD EMBRACE AND WANT TO EXTEND AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE.”

You also missed his foreword to books by the Toffler’s, who openly call for a replacement of our constitution.

You missed him admitting that he is a Realpolitik Wilsonian, an Alexander Hamilton-Teddy Roosevelt conservative, and a conservative futurist.

Newt may have been on both sides of most issues, but in the end, he has ended up on the right side of them. Heck, there were a lot of conservatives which believed global warming could be possible and we all figured it out, same with Newt as far as I am concerned, and the list goes on. As Newt said, the conservative makeup of America is pretty simple and it works. It works for a while, then the book gets picked up by the liberals and this time progressives, and each and every time it is ruined. We (conservatives) then get the book back after things go in the wrong direction, and fix it. Go conservative and forget about the moderates, they will vote as needed if things are going to move in the correct direction and fix this country just as it has in the past, history proves it will. The Capitalist system works, and it works well for the world, not just us. Keep up the liberal/progressive garbage and the whole world fails, just look at what happened in the Middle East this last year.

I have heard that he coauthored the article and also have heard that he was part of this Sustainable Defense Task Force that was FORMED by Barney Frank which the CATO institute was also involved in (A libertarian organization). It would seem the only ideological spectrum that was absent was the conservatives. This is another case of Beck excluding many facts to paint a picture that suits his opinion.

Newt is Big GOV, pro Global warming, Pro Amnesty, and has enough ethics problems to make 10 men look bad.

So explain to me in logical terms how Romney wins in November if he’s the nominee. He has yet to breach the 25% realm and will NOT get the conservative vote so how does he beat Obama? He is a moderate at best. Progressive liberal at worst. So please explain how he wins and McCain who is like Romney looking in a mirror didn’t win last time. Common sense says he can’t.

Polls at the national level show him wining.

And wait for NH, he will break the 25% level, then all your arguments are gone, like the nothing they were made of.

So no logical reasoning to my question then. Only that the polls say he will win. What are the real differences between Obama and Romney? Where does Romney really show he’s different than Obama other than words? That‘s Romney’s problem, he is not enough of a difference from Obama to draw the conservatives and even many independents to him. Just like McCain, he’s lukewarm, vanilla, plain. No real hard stands on anything because he has to make everyone happy which only leaves the majority feeling betrayed and settling for “the lesser of two evils.”

Oh, and I can’t wait to see NH. We might just get to see early how unelectable he really is. I have a feeling things might just change from what they are now, even in NH. However, he SHOULD take NH since they are liberal to moderate voters in general but if he doesn’t take it in a landslide he definitely should be questioned even more about being able to beat Obama.

LORDCHAMP really ? are you that ignorant ?

Romney spent his life MAKING MONEY, in the REAL WORLD, with a REAL JOB.
      Obama, spent it in Academia/politics.

Romney has balanced budgets for his jobs (Bain, 2002 games, MA gov)
Obama has never balanced a budget.

      Romney supports Israel.
      Obama does not.

Romney supports national right to work.
      Obama does not.

      Romney supports the Constitution.
      Obama does not.

Rubio is not running. Get with the program. Romney is not conservative. If chosen Romney will have more of the same policies as Obama. Same ole, same ole. We need someone who will jump start this country back to the country we knew. That person is Newt Gingrich. He is bold. He is brilliant. He is the only candidate to make Obama look like a fool. He is an excellent debater and will wipe the floor with Obama. He has original ideas to get back America. Gingrich 2012
