‘Give Credit to the Activists’: ‘The Nation’ Lists the 20th Century’s 50 Most Influential Progressives

The Nation Lists the 20th Centurys 50 Most Influential Progressives

Saul Alinsky

The Nation has just compiled a list of the “Fifty Most Influential Progressives of the Twentieth Century.”

They introduce the list, which excludes elected officials, by saying:

A hundred years ago, any soapbox orator who called for women’s suffrage, laws protecting the environment, an end to lynching, workers’ right to form unions, a progressive income tax, a federal minimum wage, old-age insurance, the eight-hour workday and government-subsidized healthcare would be considered an impractical utopian dreamer or a dangerous socialist. Now we take these ideas for granted. The radical ideas of one generation are often the common sense of the next. When that happens, give credit to the activists and movements that fought to take those ideas from the margins to the mainstream. We all stand on the shoulders of earlier generations of radicals and reformers who challenged the status quo of their day.

The list recognizes known progressives from Margaret Sanger to Saul Alinsky, but also includes men like Martin Luther King.

The Nation Lists the 20th Centurys 50 Most Influential Progressives

Margaret Sanger

The Nation describes Margaret Sanger as “a nurse among poor women on New York City’s Lower East Side and [an] advocate for women’s health. In 1912 she gave up nursing and dedicated herself to the distribution of information about birth control (a term she’s credited with inventing), risking imprisonment for violating the Comstock Act, which forbade distribution of birth control devices or information…”

Sanger’s description does not include the fact that she believed in eugenics and wanted to eliminate “undesirables” from society.  However, The Nation precipitated such objections, and wrote in the list’s introduction, “They made mistakes, which may be understandable in historical context, but which should be acknowledged as part of their lives and times.”

Other recognizable names on the list included W.E.B. Du Bois, Upton Sinclair, Eleanor Roosevelt, Woody Guthrie, Ella Baker, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Malcom X, and Michael Moore.

At the end of the slide show, The Nation asked for readers to select eleven figures whom they believed made the biggest difference in the twentieth century.  The results showed Howard Zinn to be number one, followed by Naom Chomsky.

Just finshed Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power by Niall Ferguson.

Yet another book that should be more popular than it is.

@BLACK9897: I am sorry, but you are wrong about Dr. King. He was a big-time liberal/progressive who very much belongs on that list. Just last week, I was perusing some newspaper archives from 1968 and found an article dated March 5, 1968 which quoted King as saying that he was deliberating whether he would endorse Eugene McCarthy or Robert F. Kennedy. He added that LBJ was unacceptable because of the Vietnam War (remember that LBJ hadn’t bowed out yet) and that Nixon was simply unacceptable and would never be considered.

King was very much a hard-core lefty. After his death, he was made into a martyr and then into a national hero. But his actual statements and thoughts have been cherry-picked to mislead a public who “wants to believe” in his legacy. However, the facts are what they are. If you are a liberal, then none of this disturbs you in the least. But, for many, MLK has been portrayed as someone who was a politically moderate guy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Look at Jesse Jackson and you get an idea of MLK’s mindset.

I’m sure the hundreds of millions of dead and incarcerated as a result of marxism enjoyed this trip through memory lane.

All of these people worked and lived for Lucifer, IMO, they strove to take God and morals out of our lexicon. These people were and are vile human beings, who care more about self than anything else. The worst of the lot is Alynski, as he dedicated his Rules for Radicals to Lucifer, as the very first radical. No my friends, these people are to be reviled and sent to the dustbin of history as brain-washers, liars and hypocrites. They brought destruction to the American dream, welfare state; they brought infanticide, abortion; they brought secularism, anti-Godliness to our country!

These maniacs didn’t care about people, they only cared about power and glory. Anyone who stands up for these misfits is a mush brain, devoid of logic and critical thinking abilities. They are anti-American, and should be treated as traitors to the American way. The road to hell is paved by good intentions, is it not?

STOGIEGUY7, Your wrong, MLK wanted people to look past skin color and only endorsed candidates based on how they viewed his cause. @Plowman: How am I wrong? Which part of the history lesson that I gave you above isn’t true? Martin Luther King, Jr. was politically VERY liberal. I wasn’t stating supposition above, I am telling you what the man said for himself with respect to the 1968 presidential elections. See: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=IT5EXw6i2GUC&dat=19680328&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

Right on page 18 are the man’s own words. He was a liberal, not a moderate. And this nonsense of saying that “he would be a Republican today” shows a total lack of historical understanding about who Martin Luther King, Jr. was. If you want to reduce the history of MLK to a Rorschach test then fine. But don’t tell me I am wrong because I am not.

It’s not just a river in Egypt my friend. Your hero was a very liberal man who would be pleased that Obama is our president now.

Broke as in they do not have any money, or are having such huge budget shortfalls, from paying out to much of their own money in their own states, that they are looking to the fed to help them out. Riddle me this. If blue states that are run by the brightest and full of those who want to pay their fair share how come for example does California not raise taxes for the “rich” living in their state to the levels needed to balance their budget without making any cuts in spending? Show us how its done comrade. All those hollywood libs and silicon valley metrosexual “men” who are often quoted they want to pay more in taxes should be demanding to pay more themselves and their companies to make California into the utopia that could be the Peoples Democratic America.

Besides I thought you are all for redistribution of wealth right? Ask any of the Governers of those red states and they would be all for block granting welfare so they can determine the need in their own state and not have the Feds dictate the levels of spending.

I have a different take. Christianity was highjacked in the 60′s by the hippie movement. Since a person would be a conscientous objector on religious grounds, the cowardly took up a facade position in Christian churches, posing as Christians, when in fact they were marxists, commies, bolsheviks and cowards.

This is why Christianity today is dominated by leftists. They figured out it was a good gig. Infiltrate the churches, free from taxes, indoctrinate by convincing people of the new “hippie” Jesus Christ. A bunch of the new converts have no idea they have been fooled.

So now we have men who proclaim Jesus and also let another man ram them up the tailpipe or take a bunch of throat yogurt. Shame. It‘s a fool’s game.

@American: “This is why Christianity today is dominated by leftists.”

Christianity is not dominated by leftists – not since the rise of the “Religious Right” in the 80s. It is, however, dominated by bigots and warmongers that have abandoned the message of the Prince of Peace in their blind quest to conflate political power over individual’s actions and morality.

“Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed.” – Barry Goldwater

“On religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God‘s name on one’s behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both.” – Barry Goldwater

Here are some other names that should have been added: Geo. W. Bush – for (1.) wrecking the US economy, (2.) starting not one but two senseless wars, (3.) outlawing certain low-end jobs once he’d ruined the economy, (4.) wanting an ‘open borders’ policy to allow illegal aliens to break the law with impunity.
Nert G(ett)ingrich – for Numbers 1, 2 & 4 above, plus his unabashed advocacy of ‘open marriage’.
Marco Rubio – for Numbers 1, 2 & 4, plus wanting to destroy Social Security to toss out all those old, ‘racist’ (read: White) folks into the street to make room for more of his brown cousins, both legal and illegal.
Like George Wallace said about the two parties so long ago: There‘s not a dime’s worth of difference.

I don’t think the Florida house has much pull with the federal government on military actions. This is a great example of what is wrong with this country. If you can’t be bothered to look behind the rhetoric and form a cogent opinion based in reality, you deserve all of the accolades that are associated with ignorance. Most everything you wrote is not even remotely true in a junkies pipe dream. One man, G. W. Bush, was not responsible for wrecking the economy. That honor belongs to many, and for a much longer period of time than his two terms. Senator Rubio actually had courage to try to fix social security. You can’t wreck something that is already broken. Without intervention, per social security trust fund manager, they will not be able to meet their obligations in the near term.
Opinions are one thing but they should be based on facts and this means you must be able to recognize rhetoric when you see it. I recognize someone elses rhetoric in your post.

Hillbilly: Your mother was a very wise person. It doesn’t take a highschool education to see what these progressives are doing and what the are trying to do to us. She called it right. One thing that I can’t understand though. Why does the present administration think that their ideas and ideals are better than what our forfathers came up with. It the early days of our country they seemed to know what they were doing and what they wanted. Now I am very doubtful of any of it. It is just like the president and the rest of congress has horse blinders on. They don’t listen to the people and pay more attention to all the radicals that are out there. I wish more people would have listened to people like your mother. OMG

OK, . . . how can people read this list and NOT UNDERSTAND the the Democrat Party of today IS NOT THEIR GRANDFATHER’S PARTY, AND PROBABLY NOT THEIR FATHER’S PARTY?!

The count goes, socialist, socialist, communist, communist, socialist, etc., etc., etc., Not surprized by this, always knew it, but gathered all in one spot, it’s mind-blowing!

What a gathering of Godless minds, perverting our social history, who want something VERY DIFFERENT from what my ancestors, my parents or I want!!!

May God have mercy on their souls, and work in the minds and lives of those who still have a chance to come to TRUTH!

How could anyone question what’s going on anymore? It’s all in “black and white” (with the exception of Martin Luther King, a Minister and a man with a purpose for all, not just himself!).

You are a liar and a fraud. The first attempt at Socialism in America was in the Plymouth colony and was a colossal failure, as has been the case with every Socialist experiment since.

Here, since you apparently are completely clueless, you probably can’t read that well so have your mommy read this to you. It‘s an excerpt from William Bradford’s writings. He was the first Governor of the Plymouth Colony and he would know better than you how Socialism worked out.

We have much to learn from the history of the Plymouth Plantation. For, in their first year in the New World, the Pilgrims conducted an experiment in social engineering akin to what is now contemplated; and, after an abortive attempt at cultivating the land in common, their leaders reflected on the results in a manner that Americans today should find instructive.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony, reports that, at that time, he and his advisers considered “how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery.” And “after much debate of things,” he then adds, they chose to abandon communal property, deciding that “they should set corn every man for his own particular” and assign “to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number, for that end.”

The results, he tells us, were gratifying in the extreme, “for it made all hands very

Yes…..you nailed it! While going through that list, took me back to the 50′s & 60′s and looking & reading about each individual it just confirms my alarms going off at the start of the 90′s. One woman, Jane Addams, caught my eye and it took me back to when I wrote a paper on her when I was in middle-school. It set-up my thought-pattern to trials & tribulations about people “having a tough time” and there was help. BUT I am “brain-wired“ to think it is all about the ”individual” and pressing-on and improving his or her life. Also, it DOES NOT matter whether you are very poor/middle income/well-to-do(& did it honestly)…..PAY IT FORWARD!…..but by your own “kindness & love for another human-being”….not the government telling you what or how your acts of kindness should go. Seeing the names etc….I have been fooling myself…I thought we had alittle more time in this country but I think there are about “3” nails left to seal our fate/coffin! I fear for this country! God help us. Thank you Blaze for this information…I have forgotten how this progression has been occurring. NO WONDER the schools are the way they are…Dumbing Down society! My mom was born during the flu epidemic of 1917-18. Sick as a child with Scarlet Fever and Rheumatic Fever she survived living in a bungalow in the woods of NJ, her head shaved and her return to school in this condition after “cure.” She left high school after finishing tenth grade, and went to work to help feed her family parents and extended farmily in the late thirties.

She finally became a waitress at a private inn that housed and fed the male professors who taught in a highly respected all-girl college in the NE. In the late 50‘s into the 60’s she and my aunts and uncles, all older than she would talk about the “progressives,” socialists and communists of the early and mid 1900′s, and how they were changing the world. Christians all, they prayed against the possibilities.

When I went to school in the mid 50′s, my mom said the school seemed to be “telling” parents, “Give us your children and get out of our way,” which hadn‘t been as strong a message in the early 50’s when my brother went to school.

I didn’t understand all my farmily talked about as I was young, but my mind stored much of what they said. Listening to Glenn seven years ago to today, I recognized much he was presenting and more since then. I wondered why?

I realized that my mom had learned much “inside information” just listening to those professors she waited on from that liberal, exclusive college! She said, “They’ll be back, they have a terrible goal, just wait. . . but p

” We will defeat you from within without firing a shot. We will feed you small doses of Socialism until one day your children wake up to find they live under Communism. ” .Nikita Khrushchev 1959

By the looks of things this prophecy appears to be on track. We raised 3 children here in Cali, and they have been indoctrinated with Liberal Socialist rhetoric since Elementary School.
A High School Teacher often spoke to his class, that one day “ La Raza ” would take back California and there is nothing the White Man can do. He flew Mexican Flag in place of the American Flag.

After several conversations with the Principle and School Board, nothing.
Long story short, it came down to an economic decision and locating the right Lawyer. In addition my children were frightened beyond words with the possible spectacle this could have caused. Our family through the years have taught our children Conservative Values, Principles and the fact that this great nation was founded on Judea Christian Principles.

My mother is Mexican and my father was Irish. My mother’s family were political refugees as Pancho Villa & Viva Sipata murdered my great grandfather & uncles. My father’s ancestors were Indentured Servants. The values I learned have been passed onto my children. We are very aware of true Bigotry, Racism & Prejudices. Because I / we disagree with the Liberal speak here in Cali, we are considered Christian Right Wing Racist’s. And we can live with that…!!

@AmericanFightingMan1: You’re right that they attack and poison our children against us. It’s pretty easy to do that with young kids that have been taught nothing is their fault and that the world owes them everything. Just look at the 20+ year olds (particularly in the OWS mess) that expect to have as good a life as we old-timers (I’m less than a decade behind you) earned over 30 years or 40 years.

Yet, some of our kids don’t learn that garbage and are immune from the “teachings” of the Progressive Liberals. It‘s unfortunate that we can’t figure out why one style of parenting tends to give more conservative (and realistic) results instead of this “the world owes me!” garbage.

As long as kids think things should be free, the Progressive Left will thrive because that’s what their hook is: “Follow me for your Free Stuff!” It’s one step from the creep in the car asking kids if they want some candy!

@Socialism.Rocks – Go reread your history books. The Puritans did indeed believe in economic determinism, but their system is not the one that founded this country. The final product was our Constitution, and that is in no shape or form anything like what Karl Marx talked about…at all. It is quite the opposite, and the founding fathers (and the rest of America at the time) were afraid of creating a big, over-reaching government body like England, France, and Spain had at the time. What we have today (socialism-light) would have scared the bejeebees out of them. That information you can find by reading the Federalist Papers.

The “others” don’t seem to be giving up their rhetoric or “beliefs”, even when they are confronted with the truth, because the truth means nothing to them they are already brainwashed and gone. They have become brainless skin, they cannot or will not speak for themselves and just spout the same lines over and over again. I pay them no mind anymore, they are like ventriolquist dummies just droning on and on in the background, there is nothing that can be done for them, even if you wanted to.
One day they will find themselves in a hellish life, tormented by the very hands they serve today. Screaming for the ones they are tormenting today to save them tomorrow, but there will be no way because you reap what you sow, and this rule will always be the same and unchangeable.

Most of the people on the list couldn’t have if they had wanted to, either because they were women, or because they were born at the wrong time. Remember that during the whole twentieth century we only had two wars against actual enemies of the country, World War II and Korea, and that our involvement in each of them lasted less than five years. Also, bear in mind that back then the military was more classist. They generally did not put guys with college educations in combat positions.

Can you say – minority voters.

MLK fought for a just cause, to have all people equal and judged by the character of their heart; the Progressives want to continue making minorities as ‘victims, disenfranchised, etc’ and to the most part have succedded. To keep control, they have to rewrite history – to turn truth into a controlling lie.

The Nation would have us believe all reforms have been good reforms, all radicals are wise radicals, any change is better than no change, government subsidized health care is in the same category as an “end to lynching,” and Martin Luther King is in the same progressive club as Saul Alinsky. And then it says “we” now take these ideas for granted, as if “we” are all satisfied with every idea and its implementation. Sorry, but I can’t seem to equate some these people and their ideas with others on the list. And I am not willing to accept that all radicals are a benefit to society. While I wholeheartedly support the end of lynching, I‘ve not stopped questioning workers’ right to form unions and minimum wage laws. Both appear to have metamorphosed into something destructive and out-of-control. Perhaps The Nation has an ulterior motive in putting a rosy glow on all reformers and lumping them all together as equals. A warm and fuzzy feeling about one radical, progressive, “hope and change” president perhaps?
