Glenn Beck Commentary: Why the Debt Deal Is Bad News

Don’t be fooled. We’ve just been betrayed by Washington.

A deal on the debt ceiling is near and Washington still hasn’t gotten serious about the fundamentals. It hasn’t gotten serious about default. It certainly hasn’t gotten serious about the future. When Harry Reid hails a “bipartisan compromise” you know we’re doomed.

Republicans and Democrats have just negotiated away the future of our children behind closed doors. The big compromise on Capitol Hill features elaborate triggers, tranches, Hornswogglers, Snozzwangers, Super Duper Commissions that will make the Snozzberries taste like Snozeberries, and a whole bunch of other convoluted gibberish that will, no doubt, come with loopholes and create entire new bureaucracies. What it doesn’t do is fix the problem.

The fact is Moody’s has already warned us that no one has put a plan on the table that comes close to solving our long-term problem. Moody’s will downgrade us. This could happen tomorrow, in six months or maybe a year from now, but at some point in the near future it’s
going to happen. And it’s going to hurt. So we must be prepared.

Imagine your credit card’s interest rates constantly rising. Imagine high inflation eating away at your savings accounts, retirement funds and salary — if you’re lucky enough to have one these days. Imagine the interest rate on your mortgage rising and compounding until there was no hope of escaping debt. Imagine that fewer and fewer people are willing to lend you any money as your credit rating takes a dive.

Now imagine we’re talking about 15, 25, 100 trillion dollars and your Medicare, Social Security and Treasury bonds.

Those tanks and missiles Republicans say we need? No more. Those food stamps and green-energy boondoggles Democrats say we can’t live without? Forget it. We won’t be able to afford them. It won’t matter how many prime time speeches the president gives or how dangerous the
world gets. The unsustainable cost of irresponsible governance mean everyone loses.

And by everyone, I mean the whole world.

Remember the saying: as Greece goes so goes the world? The United States economy constitutes around 25 percent of the world’s GDP. What happens to global economy when we default? Everyone will feel it. After all, who’s going to send billions in weapons to Egypt’s military regime to help it quell the “democratic” Arab street when we can’t even pay the janitors at the IRS office space?

So what is the point of all the drama in Washington? As best as I can tell most politicians are scared stiff that they might have to have a substantive debate about the debt ceiling during the election season. Other than that, we’re back where we started.

For one, any promise of future cuts is as about as rock solid as a politician’s word. Experience has taught us every year some “unprecedented” emergency will require us to spend hundreds of
billions, if not trillions, we don’t have to “fix.” Mark my words, the war (I’m sorry … “kinetic military action”) that no one even understands in Libya will expand and then all the promises forgotten.

It’s true that seven or eight months ago Democrats were still saying we needed another stimulus package and calling for new spending. Now, we’re not just talking about whether to cut but about how much to cut.  And it’s great news that Washington has made significant progress in moving the Balanced Budget Amendment — the only real and lasting solution to this crisis. Nevertheless, the fact remains that this deal raises the debt limit by about $2.5 trillion dollars without making substantial and immediate cuts.

Congressman Jason Chaffetz, in fact, explained that the first year of spending cut is $7 billion and when you consider that we deficit spend $4 billion a day, the real savings in the first year of this deal covers only two days of spending.

Promises mean nothing in Washington. We need genuine, transformational reform and real spending cuts today, not a strategic Republican victory. The time for political expediency is over.

Isn’t it curious that when Democrats wanted to push through a $1 trillion stimulus plan that enriched every social engineering project in the country they got it done? Isn’t it amazing that Democrats had the willpower to ram through health unpopular Obamacare which changed
our entire health care system without any compromise whatsoever?

Why can’t Republicans find a similar backbone? Why can’t they fight for the people who elected them? Are you telling me they can’t find significant waste and fraud in the Federal government right now?

The answer is simple.

You cannot spend more than you earn. You cannot run up the largest credit card bill in human history. You want more revenue? Stop chasing income earners overseas by threatening them with higher taxes, stop inflating their energy costs and stop punishing them with never-ending regulations. Mr President, put down your socialist mop! Stop with the Cloward and Piven floor wax.

And then balance the budget, cut back the spending and reform entitlements.

Here’s what should happen today. The House Tea Party Caucus in it’s entirety should hold a news conference explaining in plain English what this deal really is. They should then call for a one month debt limit increase to eliminate the “crisis”. Then, they should call in no uncertain terms for Boehner to resign by end of business TODAY! If he doesn’t, they should call for a vote on the House floor for his removal. All it takes to remove Boehner is a majority vote. The new Speaker must be a stout Tea Party member. THEN, work on a REAL plan to stop REAL spending. Not just lower the rate of increase. They would go down in history as the people who saved America. Alas, I know. It ain’t gonna happen. We’re screwed. When this all shakes out eventually, some of these politicians will be dragged through the streets & hung like Mussolini.

Practically every “R” pundit Fox has put on for an interview over the last two days has said it was a “victory for the Republicans”! But it sure doesn’t seem to be a “victory”, does it. If they want to claim “victory”, they should insist, no DEMAND that the cut, cap and balance proposal be taken off the table and voted on in the Senate. THAT would be a great starting point for future spending cuts and deficit reduction, in my opinion.

Max, try to understand that the Tea Party folks are not a clear majority in the House and definiitely not in the Senate. I think some of them tried very hard to get a deal that would be acceptable, but they‘re outnumbered and they’re outgunned. They’re freshmen! They don’t have power. They have to hang around for a while to get that power and, unfortunately, most of them will be corrupted while waiting and not do what we sent them there in first place to do. They want to now, but in three election cycles when they could actually do some good … probably not.

The solution is that the next primary, we kick out the progressive Republicans and replace them with conservative candidates for the general. Either that, or we start fighting for a third party. The Republican Party replaced the Whigs when the Whigs stopped meeting the needs of the country. If the GOP is no longer representing conservatives, then perhaps its time to establish a viable conservative third party.

Don’t kid yourself. Both parties are to blame. The Democrats (who claim on their own website to be the same democrats for more than 200 years) who wanted to retain slavery – and the republicans, who were perfectly willing to crush states’ rights to pursue a moralistic agenda (ie, the civil war). This was, in truth, the first time where a “moral requirement” (abolishing slavery in the south) became justification for immoral government action. I don’t support slavery one bit (hell, I am in the 28% tax bracket, more than 10 out of every 40 hours I work go directly to my masters) – but I do support the rights of states who don’t like the direction the country is going in to leave. United we stand, my ass – it’ more like united we serve.

So true. Ultimately the real solution is get the jobs back; well I take that back. Ultimately kicking every big spender and career politician out of DC is the real solution. lol

Again, below’s my solution (and I’ll keep posting it til someone in DC at least attempts to address this):

First of all, we have to understand that we are going broke. My solution: we got to recall all our military from all foreign lands (and I mean all) and cut it by a third to a half and the remaining troops main mission should be guarding the borders as they are Constitutionally demanded too. Now that would save a heck of a lot of money. Let the rest of the world take care of their own business; we can no longer be the police force of the world. Domestically, I would eliminate the Income tax and IRS and go to a National Sales Tax model. Less entities to collect from so that will further reduce the need for government workers saving more money. Also, before we even had income tax, we got most of our money from tariffs and other fees. Repeal NAFTA/GATT and bring the tariffs back. Short term, things will cost more. Long term, the jobs will return (they have too if companies want to sell their goods to us at a reasonable cost to them). NAFTA/GATT just gave them incentives to leave. That’s my take; want to hear yours. :)

I agree with much of what you said, except in a few areas. I agree with bringing back most of our military from foreign lands, but DO NOT cut them by half or a third. We will need them at full strength in case we are attacked again (and there WILL be attempts). Securing our borders in absolutely essential to our national security, so that would be a definite plus. I like the Flat Tax which would require everyone to pay the same percentage regardless of their incomes. It would also reduce the size and scope of the IRA. I agree that NAFTA needs to be repealed in order to bring back jobs to the U.S. Also, Term Limits should be on the table … we need fresh blood in Washington from time to time.

If you cut the military by a third, that will dump millions of people into an already bloated unemployment line, force the government to dole out higher unemployment compensation payments, food stamps and other support agency benefits. How many of those will retire and place an even a larger strain on the social security system? i will support bringing them home, but not cutting. Also, has anyone thought about the military cuts in this proposed bill. Determining what to cut will turn Leon Penatta into the most powerful man in America as he rapes the military budget which will inevitably do exactly what i‘m suggesting you’re proposal will do… overwhelm the system and render this country totally ungovernable.

Repeal of the 16th amendment, Progressive Income Tax, would solve everything. The founders never intended for discriminative taxing.

Direct taxes, income tax, were directed to be apportioned, total revenue wanting to collect/each citizen equaling apportioned per person tax, and States were responsible for collecting.

Indirect taxes, sales, excise, duties, were directed to be uniform.

A flat income tax was deemed unconstitutional. Being direct it has to be apportioned meaning each must pay the same amount.

The 16th amendment did away with orders of “apportioned” and “uniform” allowing for Progressivism aka discrimination.

A 1% sales tax would fix our deficit very quickly. Each entitlement would have a tax by it’s name. Being a direct tax they would have to be apportioned.

Your money in the bank would increase due to no tax on interest.  Companies would return here for no income tax. You choose what taxes you pay by choice restoring self responsibility.

Foreign policy wise, just bringing the troops home would save the equivalent to cutting 1/3 of the military. Sure cut the fat but 1/3-1/2 is quite a bit. The soldiers isn’t what costs, it is the bases we pay for in other countries that costs.

The taxing of profit, income, has been the demise of America. They take it cause they can then spend it how they want. Direct opposite of what was wanted by the founders. Just my thoughts.

If we were to bring all of our troops (and their FAMILIES) home and NOT cut their numbers, it could actually be the START of a recovery! Think about this: People need housing. Other people BUILD houses. People need stores of all types, because they BUY things even when the economy sucks. Stores HIRE workers and PAY them. Happy, well-paid workers buy/rent more homes and buy things too. THE COUNTRY needs its’ borders protected – and not just along the Southern border, for those who’d wince at living in the very warm Southwest. So the construction and job creation would be spread all over the Country. Win-Win for everyone!!

Why don’t you give all your money to the government if you think they do such a great job “taking care” of people? Where are our John Adams, George Washington”s, and the founding Father’s of our day…we need them desperately! We need to pray for more like them. Hopefully maybe we are raising children of ours that will be strong enough to stand and become one of them or just maybe one of us will. I am so tired of all of the lying and cheating, and spending that goes on in Washington. Republicans, Democrats have sold us out for more money and cushy jobs. This could have been solved a long time ago, but no they had to wait to the last minute. Its clear they don’t want to loose their jobs. I agree also that the military should not be the ones cut. We need the border protected. Our country protected. How many politicians have served in our armed forces? Why don’t we send them to protect our country, lord knows they have made enough money. Let’s just switch their payrolls. Let the armed forces have theirs, and they can take the armed forces payroll. At least the service men and women put their lives on the line everyday. The politicians work, lets see how many days in a year?……….

And may I say that if one is not grounded in the person of Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ only, one is at the hands of the twisting wind and will end up as lost no matter the world’s financial crisis. Salvation is key to survival in the world and the next.

Hehe, this doesn’t do the current situation justice. It should be closer to:

“Create a crisis and then don’t let it go to waste” because the debt ceiling was only an issue because Washington and the media made it one. The debt ceiling has been increased so many times before, why make it an issue now? Well, to gain political points of course!

      “actually we are over taxed.”

Huh? We have basically the lowest taxes ever. Seriously, look up historic tax rates. Taxes have never been so low.

You know what? I‘ll help you out so you don’t have to go scouring for info:

      http://visualecon.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/nytimes_taxes_graph.gif

The graph starts in the 1960s (taxes were even higher before that, up to 94% in the 1940s) and ends in 2004. We have even lower tax rates now and they will drop even more when this debt ceiling bill goes into effect.

Good lord, it’s BECAUSE of huge deficits that the rate of tax burden is relatively low!

If you add in deficits, which is money that SOMEONE will eventually have to pay, the tax burden is one of the highest history! It‘s our freakin’ kids that are gonna suffer the pain of our decadence!

To Erabin, either you are under 40 or just have no clue. Yes the top marginal rates used to be higher unfortunately they never generated any revenue do to the fact that there were numerous tax shelters and loopholes in the system. The percentage of income that was taxed at a 90+ rate was negligible. If you want to be intellectually honest look at the gross tax revenues against gdp. Also we are the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world. Don’t have a job? Lower rates, make it a haven for business to invest in the US and we‘ll have so many jobs that we’ll have to open our borders. (More than they are currently)

Only that the average person does not really have any concept of how things work or even a most basic grasp of reality. This issue is a great example. The (tea) party line was hold your ground and do not compromise. Fine. Then you should expect that the (false) deadline would pass and the debt ceiling would not be raised. Then you should be prepared for the economic fallout (if any) that would come. This is great, but all the things Glenn is crying about here would happen anyway.

You could also fold like a wet blanket and cave to the libs. This seems to have been the MO for years now. Just kick the can further down the road while ensuring the government can keep passing out obama dollars hand over fist.

So what is the reality here? What did anyone expect the Republicans to do? They made the best compromise they could. I am sure many here think they should not have compromised I am not sure I do not think this myself, I am prepared for an economic collapse, I am willing to sacrifice my SS that I have paid into all my life. I have made sure I can afford health care. If need be I can move to another country if things get too bad. Can you? Are you prepared for that? But even if they did not compromise at all, do you believe Reid would allow anything to pass the Senate? Do you honestly think you will hold Obama’s feet to the fire? The reality is if there were a crash all fingers would point to the Republicans.

The reality is if we did not pass something then all the things Glenn is crying about here would come to pass anyway. At least this way we limp along a little further and hope a Republican administration will do the real work in the near future. That is reality.

Let me add just one more post. I have read Glenn’s article several times now. Carefully read his conclusion here:

      “The answer is simple.

And then balance the budget, cut back the spending and reform entitlements.”

This is the answer. What we are doing here is simple a dog and pony show, it is meaningless. UNTIL we get an administration that is willing to tackle the real problems nothing will get done. We have the house locked up, the Dems have the senate locked up. If we controlled congress we would stand a better chance of pressuring Obama, but we do not. He can hide behind Reid. NOTHING will happen for the next year and a half. There is nothing to be done.

      Glenn asks:

“Why can’t Republicans find a similar backbone? Why can’t they fight for the people who elected them? Are you telling me they can’t find significant waste and fraud in the Federal government right now?”

They have. The problem is they cannot do anything about it. The only thing they gain by standing firm is being called obstructionists. Which is fine, but life goes on.

      Glenn writes:

“We need genuine, transformational reform and real spending cuts today, not a strategic Republican victory. The time for political expediency is over.”

Yes! We do! But…When 2/3 of the government will not come onboard what do you think can happen?

That’s the point, you have to face reality. It’s really all about the coming election because the republicans control the house only. After seeing what the dems did when controlling the house, senate & president, it is kind of scary to have one party controlling everything. Although I also get disgusted with the republicans, they are much better than the dems. The reality is we have 2 political parties & to get anything done, you need to compromise.
