Glenn, Police Union React to White Houses Controversial Rapper

The controversial rapper, "Common."

On Monday we brought you the story of the rapper “Common” who, despite his controversial cop-killing lyrics, has been invited to a poetry event at the White House. His lyrics and the invitation enraged many readers of this site. Now, that sentiment has spread. Not only did Glenn Beck hilariously lampoon the invitation on his Wednesday radio show, but now the New Jersey state police union has also come out against the appearance.

“The young people who read this stuff, hear this stuff, are getting a very dangerous and deadly message,” David Jones, president of the State Troopers Fraternal Association union, told NBCNewYork.com. His anger stems from the lyrics to “A Song for Assata,” which praises convicted cop-killer and former Black Panther Assata Shakur.

“Your power and pride is beautiful,” he says in the song. “May God bless your soul.” The entire song is below:

Shakur, who used to go by Joanne Chesimard, was convicted of killing Trooper Werner Foerster on the New Jersey Turnpike in 1973. She escaped prison in 1979 and is currently living in Cuba. The FBI currently has a $1 million bounty on her capture.

“Hopefully someday she’ll be caught,” Sal Maggio, a retired troop commander with the state police, told NBCNewYork.com, adding that officers still talk about the incident and the bounty.

But the troopers and their union aren‘t the only one upset about Common’s visit. On radio Wednesday, Glenn showered the event with a heavy dose of comedy and sarcasm.

“They had a rapper at the White House. Sure he does a little poetry about shooting cops, but who hasn’t done that as a president in the White House?” he asked mockingly, before pointing out the president has surrounded himself with anti-cop sympathizers in the past:

Welcome to the non-controversy of the year…

Anyone with any knowledge of hip-hop (which I am aware that most of you don’t have) knows that Common is widely considered one of the most socially conscious and positive rappers around

Does he use some shocking language to make a point? Sure, but so do most musical artists, including those beloved by conservatives… And to use one song and one lyric from an artist who has released almost a dozen albums and therefore penned hundreds of song as a barometer of his entire message is simply dishonest

Another classic example of the misinformation available on The Blaze

The most amusing thing is that conservative outlets don’t realize how out-of-touch this “controversy” makes them appear, meaning they’re further alienating independents (i.e. people who decide elections)

Most rational people see this as a non-issue, because they have a shred of awareness about popular culture… You all are simply screaming into an empty auditorium

I’d make a point about the racial angle in all of this, but that’d be too obvious among this lot

Yeah, for SOME reason rappers get treated like everything they do with their art (because they frequently speak in first person) somehow is 100% representative of who they are. Do a song where someone commits an act of violence? Then somehow that rapper is pro-violence. But make a movie, or any other genre of song for that matter, take a photograph, etc. of violence and then people acknowledge the artist is exploring/analyzing violence.

I love that the article claims this song promotes cop killing when it is clearly about someone who was FRAMED for killing a cop. It‘s like they don’t even listen to these things.

well – there are examples of ignorance in rock, heavy metal, etc. but we should just ignore the fact that this person was invited to the whitehouse, that behaves poorly, associates with people that hate america, raps about killing cops, treating women like crap, etc. i personally don’t listen to music. that doesn‘t mean i’m not exposed to it. smart people will understand that ignoring ignorant people singing about ignorant behavior is. . . do i need to say it? i understand that you sir – don’t get it. what this really comes down to – those that support Obama’s poor descisions, bad behavior, and support the people that he surrounds himself with – are the same as obama. Morally bankrupt, bad for america, and need to be defeated at the polls

What you all seem to be missing is that the only example of his “cop-killing” advocacy are is out-of-context lyric… You ignore the fact that the man has been making music for almost 20 years

Most of his catalog promotes peace, respect for women and social awareness… But continue to bathe yourselves in ignorance, as I originally said, most normal people (i.e. independents, people who decide elections) are laughing at the conservative fools making a controversy of this

Rational a quick search of Common’s portfolio shows that many of his songs not only use controversial language but overtly advocate illegal and immoral behavoir. while you and Red are back slapping each other you may want to take a step back and review your thinking on this issue.

Also this straw dog that he is “widely considered one of the most socially conscious and positive rappers around” is pretty shallow. If Laura Bush invited Prussian Blue up to the White House liberals would be furious as would I. Al Sharpton would be marching down Pennsylvania Avenue and frankly if I was in town I would be right there with him.

But suddenly if PB started giving to charity you and Red and the NAACP would cut them some slack? Really, I hope not. So you see that argument doesn’t fly with me.

I also noted some condesension in your post regarding conservatives cultural awareness. Perhaps you are unaware that Libs went apoplectic when in 2003 Laura Bush invited poets to come to the White House to read poetry from real poets like Emily Dickinson and Walt Whiman. In fact that got so outraged that the event was cancelled.

So let me understand your “rational” thinking here. 2003,poets who don’t advocate killing cops, raping women, and the destruction of the country, reading real poetry BAD. Poets who advocate killing cops, raping and beating women and overthrowing a constitutional gov’t reading some of their kinder, gentler stuff GOOD.

      Right?

Does this Common” realize that there are Black Police officres, too? Does he plan to kill them, too? All those that worry about being oppressed by the “White man” better take a good look at who’s doing the oppressing. We have found the enemy, and it is US!

And love for each and every one of you. Reminding you to believe. These are the words of a believer achiever. Leader of the globe, feed the souls of those in need. I bleed the blood of the struggle. Walking over troubled puddles. The hustle is in my chest. No hustle no progress. Extremities of life in this process. The birth of a son. The death of another. With love I caress both mothers. And told ‘em whose in control is the one that’s above is. I walk where money talks and love stutters. The body language of a nation. Going though changes. The young become dangerous. Spent into anger. Anger gets sent through the chamber. It’s tough when your own look like strangers. We are the sons of gangsters and stone rangers. If he could how would Ernie Barnes paint us? Look at the picture. It’s hard not to blame us. But time forgives in the shy where the young die often. Do they end up in a coffin because we haven’t taught them? Is it what we talkin’, we really ain’t walking. Dudes, hustlers, paid. How much did it cost them?”

    1. Rappers making money

    3. Rappers who believe in the 2nd admendment.

    The problem is:
    1. Rappers who BREAK the law
    2. Rappers who MURDER, and who KILL the police. Our police keep us safe, and should have a level of respect for dealing with criminals.
    3. Rappers who GLORIFY killing, murder, rape, lawlessness, and anti-American sentiments.

obama is not-so-secretly attempting to sign into law ”S.679”, which has such legal loopholes it would allow him to completely bypass Congress and gain complete dictatorial powers over America and our laws.

Not sure if you are aware, but in the country I live in, called the USA, there is thing called “The Constitution” which all laws in the country are based on. One of the parts of it is called the “First Amendment,” which means I can say anything I want, provided it doesn’t put someone in immediate danger.

So, I will continue to say anything I please.

In a way I agree with Reddenblack. The guy has the right to puke out any lyrics that he thinks he can sell to his people. But, I would advise him that the NIJ (National Institute of Justice) estimates that 67% of the firearms in this country are possesed by white people, 13% by asians and a mere 8% by black folks. That coupled with the fact that whitey outnumbers you approx 6.8 to one, you might not wish for the STHTF. You will lose big time.

As for the rest of those idiots who voted for this hot mess, there’s just no excuse for it. I mean, I know they suffer from some sort of mental affliction, but that’s still no excuse. This is almost as bad as all those stupid women voting for Slick Willie because he was just so “cute.”

I think I just threw up a little.

As a woman, I’m embarrassed by Those Women. You know the type: they vote like it’s American Idol. “Oh, he’s so cute! Look at how well-spoken he is. That was a textbook example of why (some) females should NEVER be given the right to cast a ballot, and if they do, they need to have adequate adult supervision as they do it.

Yeah this language will win you the “old white people” vote, but young educated adults that can actually think rationally understand these are just words with no substance. The right is allowing itself to be taken over by the extreme. Be forewarned, it will not win in 2012, 2013, or in the near future. @ ginsberg and walkw/me

      1. I have never heard any person that is part of the tea pary movement say that obama should be taken out.

      2. Do your homework. One of the steps of marxism/communism is to paint the local police force in a bad light. This will require a federal police force, this would require even more federal laws to justify the actions of a federal police force.
      3. It does not matter if he has “released” his songs. He is being praised as a poet in the white house. How did he meet the Obamas? Jeremiah Wrights church? hmm thats interesting.
      4. He does have the right to speak out against police violence and rascism. He does not have the right to promote murder of police or anyone for that matter.
      5. I will stick to my religion. You can say all you want but I know what experience I have had with God. You may think he is not real, but I know he is. You can have the same experience with God as me, if you follow His words.

Progressives dismiss the Imposter’s acquaintance, associates, political appointments and guests by saying … “it’s only “guilt by association”, as though that is a flawed concept and shows bigotry or small mindedness or some such nonsense. I say ….B.S.

I would remind the left that long before progressivism turned their gray matter into mush, Americans gave serious credibility to sayings such as “birds of a feather flock together”, or “you’re known by the company you keep”. In many public crimes the “accessory to the crime” is held guilty by just being there….
“guilt by association” ??…you bet !!

Between rap/hip hop, MTV, cell phones and the internet, our children have not a chance today. The “black” music/media industry has transformed millions of good white kids into “wanna be gangstas”. There is a term for this which I will not use, but it rhymes with digger, and starts with a w instead of a d. As long as we allow our children to immerse themselves in this type of social re-engeneering we will never be able to turn the tide and bring our Nation back to it’s former grandure and moral standing.
With role models like this Common, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, and others, can we expect anything different? Teach you kids how to hunt, shoot, skin, and clean. How to fish, how to start a fire IN A GOOD WAY! Get them out of the house away from the TV, their cell phone, X-Boxes and all that. Show them how to cook simple food items, how to wash clothes, and hoe to wash clothes without a machine.
Last but not least, don’t forget, gold is not the only mineral you’ll need, make sure you have a good supply of lead!

And Obama’s approval rating rose to 60%?? Are there that many uninformed, oblivious people out there that do not know that he continues to damage our country in ways large and small? This rapper in the White House is an abomination to decency. Why do the police rank and file continue to support this president? He demeans them with this invitation.

Yeah, nobody should be allowed to speak out against cops. Even though the lapd and nypd have been exposed for corruption and profiling, even though cops torture and kill blacks from time to time…lets just pretend they are perfect, hell lets just create a police state where blacks are second class citizens. Glen and tea baggers talk about stockpiling weapons and rebelling against the government guess thats ok but common cant say what he feels?

In the recent past, I have done the same thing just to “reboot”.
Michelle told us a few yrs ago, we’d have to change the way “we think”. Not me, thank ya very much, lady!
Common is luving all this new pubicity to be sure. BHO and Michelle could care less what We The People think about this invite, because they hate America and want it to operate more like a socialist and marxist country. This is why, early on, BHO appointed all his inexperienced czars to key agencies (Sunstein; Holder; Immelt; Jarrett; Geithner, etc.); people he has regular visits (Trumpka) to WH; and don’t forget those he hand picks for our Supreme Court!

Some of Common’s lyrics could be considered objectionable. Others are admirable. It doesn‘t seem likely that a rational discussion will be had since a lot of people participating in the discussion don’t know much about Common and aren’t in any hurry to find out.

In my opinion — and I have listened to many of Common’s songs — Obama could easily have made a safer decision, but to do so would mean to cut out any popular hip hop artists since all of them are de facto talking about controversial subjects. As far as hip hop goes, Common’s ratio of objectionable to admirable material is higher than most. Obama made the decision to include a guest who would appeal to a young urban demographic. This is a decision which you can disagree with, but it is hardly the insult to America that some posters are acting like it is.

I can well imagine that anger from the left if George W. Bush had invited a singer who had espoused support for the cops that mistakenly shot Amadou Diallo or something like that. Their anger would be equally disproportionate to the “crime.”

We need to stop getting distracted by the little stuff and focus on the big stuff. We have big challenges to face in this country and who Obama chooses to invite to perform at the White House has no impact on them one way or another.

Stop the foolishness. Focus on what really matters.

Why do they grace this clown with a title of “Poet”. He’s a rapper whose lyrics barely rhyme or form any semblance of poetic creativity. He spews vileness in his ebonics. If the youth need to listen to rap…fine…listen to him, but a poet is a stretch. So I guess he got invited to another one of Obama‘s WH fiestas because he’s a Dem. supporter.

Too bad this has been completely debunked. A usual, Glenn Beck doesn’t care very much about pesky things like “Facts.” Amusingly enough, Fox news even brought Common on and PRAISED him for being “Very positive.” Oops!!!! http://mediamatters.org/blog/201105100018 He also has many song where, when the lyrics are taken out of context sound damning but are actually condoning violence.

But hey, keep on slamming him blindly! It’s much easier than doing any research!

PS: Sorry for linking to Media Matters, couldn’t find it on YouTube. I’m sure the local crew will claim it was manufactured by George Soros or some other lunacy.

      @ liberal teacher.
it is NOT THE DEMOGRAPHIC . it is trhe hateful, missinformation, outright lies, and anti FREEDOM sewage being spewed by that individual.
      1-defends murderers
2-lies about what freedom is . to answer j.chesiwald on her question of what freedom is… it’s in the mind and heart of the individual: the individual paradigm . read about Victor Frankel, Aristotle -Nicomachean ethics and Politica, and if you‘d like a dialogue with someone from a communist country i’m availible. we can tell you that freedom, is for those who’s hearts and minds are resolved to stand for and fight for and if need be die for what is OUR GOD GIVEN INALIENABLE RIGHTS> that’s right , there are those throughout history and the world that have known this. IT IS THE WEAK OF CHARICTOR and cold of heart that attempts to force thier ways on others- take marx for example.
3-defends cop killers. here in America if you need help call the police and they will risk thier lives for YOU! in most of the world people do fear and flee from the police for it is they who will KILL YOU! GET IT!
4-this thing is nothing more than a mindless simpleton recapitulating the hateful rhetoric fed to it . all with on ounce of introspection or thought/verification of the programmings validity.

this can go on all day but i have real doubts that the left would see any of it . mindless automatons.

“And Obama’s approval rating rose to 60%?? Are there that many uninformed, oblivious people out there…”

Perhaps we should …, ‘question with boldness’.

Last night on Bill O’, Dick Morris pointed out that the AP poll they used to get that 60% rating was a “bad sample”, in his words. It would seem that the AP has now joined other MSM and democratic pollsters, and is no longer honest or trustworthy.

After “digging” Dick found that there were more than twice as many democrats polled as Republicans or Independents in that poll to arrive at the 60% finding !!! That is reprehensible and the AP has now officially joined the re-elect Ovomit campaign.

Please don’t think for a moment that the skewed numbers will stop the massive media campaign to convince people that the numbers are correct. Certainly we all need to question everything and not help to spread the lies.

      …rf
