Gloves Off: Sen. Rand Paul Blasts HHS Mandate as ‘Authoritarian’ & ‘Totalitarian’

In an op-ed for National Review online, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) denounces the now infamous decision by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force religious employers to cover the cost of contraception and abortion-inducing drugs in its employees’ health-care coverage, saying that it’s just one more thing that makes “Obamacare” “socialized medicine.”

Sen. Paul goes so far to say that the decision by the HHS is “something generally witnessed only in totalitarian and authoritarian regimes,” and says that it is a direct violation of religious liberty, for all Christians, not just Catholics.

“Because ‘contraception’ includes abortifacients, this decision — made under the powers granted to the executive branch under Obamacare — also threatens many Protestant employers,” Sen. Paul writes.

“The decision is the latest and most outrageous example of why Obamacare — socialized medicine — must be repealed in its entirety. It is also a shocking example of the administration’s choosing to ignore the opinions and beliefs of millions of Americans.”

But the Senator didn’t leave it at that; he was just getting started:

And while the Obama administration has never been a protector of pro-life Americans’ conscience rights — for example, it supports the federal funding that Planned Parenthood receives — this latest decision attempts to crush the freedom of the Catholic Church in this country. The president has declared a “war on religion,” as Michael Gerson wrote in the Washington Post last week.

Considering Obama’s comments about rural Pennsylvanians who “cling” to their religion, however, this is perhaps not entirely surprising.

All Americans’ religious freedoms are protected by the First Amendment. The earliest colonists who came to this country in the pre–Revolutionary War days traveled here because they were seeking a home in which they could practice their religion in freedom and peace without government persecution. Religious freedom — which has been called “our first liberty” — is ingrained in the very fabric of our national culture.

But HHS and the administration have decided that their goal of state-run health care trumps our first liberty. What the president is attempting to do here is something generally witnessed only in totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.

Read Sen. Paul’s full op-ed here.

    Quit calling it “Socialized Medicine”! That‘s like saying a woman’s a little bit pregnant. Call it what is is: “Socialist Medicine” as it’s being implemented by Socialists whose intent and goal is Global Socialism. Success or not, call for impeachment….

      What most don’t understand is the Catholic church was in favor of national health care and that the Church takes the left side on many many issues. To see the Obama people slam the Church as from the right is very dishonest. This fight is about the first ammendment and religous freedom period. This is a great moment for us because it exposes Obama for what he is- an extreme radical, not a centrist. Keep the heat on your Congressman and your Senators.

      @ISHKA4ME – Catholics have a heck of a lot of fascist/communist/socialist advocates, which is pretty stupid considering that totalitarian political leanings eventually try to obliterate them. Nicaragua was particularly entertaining, as the socialist priests imagined they’d have a seat at the table…

      Glenn once mentioned Catholic Charities in passing as part of the whole “Social Gospel” stealth communism movement. He’s quite right.

      A system of government that permitted this person to become President is a broken system that cannot be fixed. A dead fish stinks from the head down. They grope or wives and children at airports, they trample our rights and laws, they have their hand in everything we do and now they will order us how to honor God and obey God’s Law.

      Sorry dude. Congress is 100 years too late and 28 trillion dollars too short:
      “The whole head is sick,
      And the whole heart faints.
      From the sole of the foot even to the head,
      There is no soundness in it,
      But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores;
      They have not been closed or bound up,
      Or soothed with ointment.”

      It’s time to pay the Piper — you’re all fired:
      “Your country is desolate,
      Your cities are burned with fire;
      Strangers devour your land in your presence;
      And it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.”
      “You shall be devoured by the sword;

      Senior- those women have the right to seek their own birth control without an organization being mandated by the government to pay for it. If they are working for a Catholic hospital or any other religous organization then they can obviously buy their own. This argument is about constitutional rights not womens rights as you are trying to twist it to seem that way. If you don’t like the constitution spearhead a movement to change it.

Who gives any employer the right to dictate their own morals over their employees? If you are going to run a large business, such as a hospital, you need to abide by the law and provide the same care as any other institution. Sen Paul has the message wrong. I agree with his stance but he does not take the thought to its completion. We are in the process of giving up our rights and sovereignty. If we vote every issue based on what we believe we can be exempted from but everyone else must be subject to, where does that leave us? It leaves us at the next executive decision taking that exemption away. The “evil rich” voting for tax increases because they can afford it will find themselves, once the legislation is passed, no longer rich but taxed to their limits. What makes them think that once their usefulness as grey matter and mindless voter exempt them from the taxes we will all face. Socialism does not make all equal, it simply creates a distinct have and have not class. If we accept Obamacare as a whole and think of it as dissecting its parts we are lost – abortion is just the beginning. Grab arms and stand (peacefully) against this takeover of our freedoms

      Do you know a majority of states (28) require religious institutions (including Catholic) to provide birth control to employees as part of their insurance programs? Suppose Obama backs down on this, but the other 22 states make the same requirement, then birth control will be provided to employees of religious institutions throughout the US. That is the reason a federal law needs to be passed making all forms of birth control illegal, along with all abortions. And criminal penalties need to be given to those disobeying those laws, including prison and worse.

Have Christians lost their conviction, and are they so in bed with the Democrats that, like the UAW before them, they view themselves as merely an arm of the Democrat party? How can Catholics, or any Christian denomination, support an atheist, like Obama, who tramples scripture, and throws his support behind Muslim Brotherhood extremists, at the expense of Christians in the Middle East. Paul states that, “Sen. Paul goes so far to say that the decision by the HHS is “something generally witnessed only in totalitarian and authoritarian regimes,” and said that it is a direct violation of religious liberty, for all Christians, not just Catholics.”

      Right? Half of the states in the US already require insurance companies who cover prescription drugs to cover birth control. But he doesn’t mention that, or declare that half of the states in our country are “totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.” In any case what “regimes” are those (besides the “regimes” here in the US)? Can somebody give me an example? Google it! Then post it here and become famous!

      And requiring insurance companies to provide the coverage for birth control, the same as other prescription medications violate the religious freedom of Protestants? How would that be? He’s not talking Catholics with that statement, he’s talking about religions that have no objection to birth control. So how is it their religious freedom is violated?

      The vast majority of women are in favor of birth control. And the percentage of Catholic women who use birth control is only slightly lower than the percentage of the general population who do. This isn’t a religious issue. It‘s a women’s issue.

      JZS, you know how when you watch a national revolt there are always two groups of people: The first, the protesters, and the second the counter-protesters. We all watch in horror as the protestors face evil, dictatorial, totalitarian regimes, and yet that second group is always there, to be FOR the tyrannical government. They never believe their government is tyrannical, either.

      So I have to ask, are you trying to suggest that there are no totalitarian nations out there that restrict religious beliefs, and compel citizens to deny their beliefs, and do as the state orders?

      @JZS, it is government injecting itself into the churches when it requires them to go against their teachings in the name of “social justice”. Certainly you didn’t really mean to equate insurance companies with religious organizations. This is a clear attempt by the Obama administration to again use regulation instead of legislation because clearly the First Amendment states: “Congress shall make no law….”. Obama is no fool, he knows he has to use the power of unelected bureaucrats to regulate away the US Constituion and he is doing it before out eyes.

      I thank God for Dr. Paul and his son Rand and pray for their safety as they defend our Constiution from its enemies within Congress, the Executive Branch, and Obama’s army of regulators.

      “Half of the states in the US already require insurance companies who cover prescription drugs to cover birth control.”

      And this is the problem with our healthcare (really, health insurance) system: state governments requiring companies to provide coverage for things its customers may not want or need. Get rid of these and let each person negotiate to purchase only coverage for those things that he wants/needs; put the customer in charge, not government—that is what is totalitarian here.

      If this were simply a insurance issue it wouldn’t be causing this problem.If the insurance company had of decided to offer a rider, in a discreet manner ,to be paid for strictly by the employee and governed by the employee, you wouldn’t be seeing the outrage.The outrage is that the government is violating the constitution.More specificaly the separation of church and state.Its the opposite of the church trying to run the state[something most of us are far more used to seeing].You are right though most protestants aren’t against birth control at all.I agree with you that it should be about womens health.Unfortunately that has long since been thrown to the wind.Why not, when both sides can use a womens uterous as a political tool, with no reprecussions.
      PS
      This is a personal statement.I truly believe that real life women are bone tired of being used and abused in this manner.Furthermore, I think what we will be seeing in the future ,if this keeps up, will be horribly ugly.Holding a womens uterous hostage to the far right who think we ought to be baby making machines or the left who think abortion and birth control should be mandatory[easier for there version of slave labor] is tantamount to sexual slavery via political tools.

      objectivetruth, I agree about the rider and frankly I think a compromise will be found along the lines you suggest.

      I do find it ironic that the right, who say want the government out of our lives, take exception when it comes to a woman’s uterous.

      But you also refer to, “the left who think abortion and birth control should be mandatory…” Uh, perhaps you could find a quote from a someone on the left who believes that? The claim that the left want mandatory birth control and abortion is so ridiculously false I don’t know how to respond. But women do. They will overwhelming vote Democrat in the next election.

    Mr. Paul,
    Surely you realize, by now, that modus operandi for the past three years has been one of riding roughshod over congress, the people, and the constitution. Yours has been one of the few voices in a sea of silence. Your efforts have been noticed and appreciated.
    However,(my favorite word) the “republican” leadershis has no spirit, spine, or resolve. If I hear McConnel say “our friends on the other side of the aisle” one more time, I swear to God, I am going to stop my truck, pull out my .40 and kill the damn radio! Friends, my a55! I want to hear some talking, shouting, hollering, squealing, braying, screaming not more “our friends” crap! Dn’t worry about being embarassed, Obama does that for yall every day.

    For a quarter Century, the United States Government has been on a self-righteous mission to remove religion from government institutions. So, we are now supposed to let the government force itself into religious institutions? I don’t think so.

    If we can’t pray in school, Congress can’t govern in Church.

      I believe it goes much deeper. Does everyone remember when Obama said, “The morning call of the Azan (Islamic call to worship) is the most beautiful sound on earth” and then went on to recite it in perfect Arabic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuXxtg4M_z8). He doesn’t care about any of our religious beliefs. He is not who he says he is.

      @who_is_john_galt_in_RI. I agree with that post whole heartedly. The Catholics need to put up or shut up. The “conservative” Lutherans need to do so as well. We also have many institutions affected by this intrusion. We need another Martin Luther to post a 95 thesis on the door of this time the White House. If the Catholics choose to take the lead this time, great. Bottom line, the Christian faith needs to join together and nip this issue and get things moving back to a proper context of government serving the people as originally envisioned by the founding fathers of many faiths. And the inconvenient truth for the government and their liberal supporters is that this constitution was founded upon many similar faiths…the vast majority were judeo/christian.

      Yes Our founding fathers did subscribe to multiple religious faiths.All leaders may be guided by that.They however maynot force there way on others.Its why its called seperation of church and state.The underpinnings come from faith.Those same underpinnings dissallow a theocracy.This is one of the issues we fought against england about.If we followed the constitution the way it was meant, we couldn’t be overrun with secularism nor turned into a theocracy.Both go against our beliefs.Remember that when arguing a point
