GM Boasts Strong June Sales — But Is That the Whole Story?

General Motors announced this month its auto sales increased by 16 percent in June, its best monthly sales gain since 2008. Considering all the company has been through, and the fact that it still owes taxpayers approximately $25 billion in TARP repayments, a 16 percent boost in sales sounds like good news, right?

Who knows? With consumers buying up all these cars, maybe GM can reestablish itself as an auto heavyweight, shareholders will finally get to see a return on their investments, and President Obama will have something to brag about on the campaign trail.

Not so fast.

As it turns out, there’s a big reason GM experienced an increase in sales last month: “government purchases of GM vehicles rose a whopping 79% in June,” according to the National Legal and Policy Center’s Mark Modica.

Seriously?

“Overall fleet sales (which are typically less profitable than retail sales) at Government Motors rose a full 36% for the month, helping to drive decent sales improvements year over year,” Modica reports.

The report continues:

GM claimed that sales increases did not rely on incentive spending, which appeared to remain in check, but one analyst during GM‘s sales conference call questioned whether the company’s “stair step” incentive spending was accurately depicted. This incentive spending kicks in after dealerships report final sales figures for the month and may be yet another deceptive way for GM to fudge its numbers. Not mentioned was GM card rewards programs that do not get counted as incentive spending.

Considering that the president fully intends to campaign on the company’s so-called “success,” the fed’s decision to bulk up its vehicle fleet with GM products would seem to be a clear conflict of interest.

Think about it in these terms [via NewsBusters’ Seton Motley]:

Barack Obama is now campaigning on the “success” of the government buying cars from … the government’s car company. With our money.

That’s like you setting up a lemonade stand for your kids.  You buy them the lemons, sugar, cups and pitchers – and then buy most of the lemonade yourself.

Except you are President Obama. Your kids are the United Autoworkers Union. And the lemonade cost $50 billion.

As always, what’s the bottom line?

“The long-term health of GM remains in question and the true financial picture may not surface until well after voters decide who will be running our country,” Modica writes.

“Eventually we will see just how successful GM really is.”

UPDATE –Modica writes that he was contacted by GM sales spokesman Jim Cain who disputes the National Legal and Policy Center’s article.

Cain argues that “total government sales for GM in June were still below 5% of total sales“ and that the majority of ”government sales increases were attributed to state and local governments” (as opposed to the federal government).

This proves that Keynesian theory is correct and to improve the economy you will need short term increases in government spending to prop up industries. Austerity kills economies and jobs.

When as ANY government operated the way you suppose? Talk about a “lemming.” The entire country is headed for an enormous fall, you’re getting fed a pack-full of lies and propaganda, and I have no doubt that you’ll be VERY surprised when the lights go out (and because the system is so broken, they won’t come back on again) and you’re standing in the dark asking “what happened?” You’re idiotic way leads backward to a two-class system, where one rules and lives as the high and mighty, and the other lives in want and misery. It’s always been that way when freedom and liberty have been extinguished, and it will be no different when it happens here.

As a retired automotive dealership General Manager, maybe I can give some insights to these numbers. First off, fleet sales, although not having what is normally called incentives, do have deep discounts afforded the end user. An example would be police packages where larger engines and heavier duty drive trains that have base prices below the retail available model. The other thing is that once a vehicle is built and it is in a dealer’s inventory, it is considered as sold. Yes, that is right, GM considers their customer the dealer and not the consumer ( all car manufacturers do). Their days supply (which are the number of vehicles in dealers hands based on current sales rate) had actually increased over May. GM already admits that its July numbers will be lower.

GM forced hundreds of dealers out of business in their reorganization. Buy a Ford. If you buy anything else, the corporate profits end up in a foreign country. Toyota, Honda, Chrysler, etc. that are built and purchased here do not help our foreign exchange. I realize American workers benefit, but not to the extent when the money stays entirely within the US.

Of course they had the recall, which turned out to replacing the floor mat and shorting the gas pedal a half inch. When I owned Ford or GM products, the service manager was on speed dial and on a first name basis. GM will fail again because the govt can buy only so many fleet vehicles and when you produce junk at with high labor costs = bankruptcy again…

The “most” American made cars are:
      Toyota Camry (last ranking 1)
      Honda Accord (last ranking 2)
      Chevy Malibu (last ranking 5)
      Ford Explorer (no last ranking)
      Honda Odyssey (last ranking 6)
      Toyota Sienna (last ranking 10)
      Jeep Wrangler (last ranking 9)
      Chevy Traverse (no last ranking)
      Toyota Tundra (last ranking 8)
      GMC Acadia (no last ranking)

So 5 of the top 10 are “foreign” car companies building their cars here in America. For a while Toyota built cars in California, until they taxed them out of the state. Hyundai and BMW are also building cars in America. Of course they are mostly outside of Detroit, so the Autoworkers Union is attacking them. But let’s not lose sight of the good work Americans are doing with foreign owned manufacturers investing right here in the US – Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, South Carolina… good jobs, good pay and benefits, and mostly non-union.

I used to buy nothing but GM cars and trucks. When the magnesium transfer case developed a hole for the second time in my Avalanche @75k, the GM rep said its normal wear. There is a cheap $1 clip that holds the transmission fluid pump that keeps falling off, then the pump rubs the case forming the hole and subsequent chronic fluid leaking. I once again paid the $1,300 to fix out of pocket and traded it in for an F250 diesel. Good thing I purchased the extended dealer warranty, cause the F250 needed a turbo and other parts totalling $4k before it had 65k miles on it.

Yeah I always buy American and pay the maintenance price but nothing pulls the toy hauler and boat like a 3/4 ton American truck.

A great book on how the communists have taken over our institutions – churches, schools, businesses, government, Military and now our court system is

    – The Naked Truth: The Naked Communist – Revisited
    by James C. Bowers

    http://www.amazon.com/The-Naked-Truth-Communist-Revisited/dp/093616316X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339153878&sr=8-1

He discusses how W. Cleon Skousen ( author of the 5000 Year Leap ) was an FBI agent for 16 years and was concerned about the implementation of what he felt were the top 45 stated goals of the communists at that time. You will be shocked how successfully their plans have been completed. A MUST READ book for any freedom loving American. Please pass on to others when done reading – SPREAD THE WORD

Also – A MUST SEE – We were warned – watch the youtube video of Yuri Bezmenov, from the 80′s with G. Edward Griffin ( Jekyll Island author ). A Soviet KGB defector, he tells how it was his job to infiltrate these institutions and place communist supporters in positions of leadership and power. He was successful in doing so. Mind boggling stuff.

It’s only a theory…my theory. Recent revelations showed the unions dumped $4.4 billion into political actions and campaigns, not the $1.1 billion reported for the last 5 years. The whole ACA thing had to happen to protect the unions as they now have what appears to be a short(er) life span. Not just autos but the municipal unions which are in the 35% range. Private sector unions make up @ 7% of the workforce for a net of @ 13%. Shifting their burdens from the union and municipal doles is key, so that has now simply become a federal liability. That’s healthcare, watch what happens with the unfunded pensions. IL for instance dedicates 20% of it‘s states budget to pensions and healthcare for unions alone if I’m not mistaken. And we thought the housing bubble was costly.

Because the government has grown too large it is very difficult in a down economy to cut federal spending. When you cut federal spending you can’t pump up the sales numbers for our government motors company. It appears we will continue to slide in a downward spiral toward bankruptcy.

When that lying General Motors CEO Ed Whitacre bragged in TV commercials and newspaper columns that GM paid back its bailout “in full and ahead of schedule” is when I decided I had purchased my last GM car.

Now, I have to hear President Øbama bragging about how he “saved the auto industry.”

The GM bailout WAS A BIG MISTAKE!

Electing Barack Øbama WAS A BIGGER MISTAKE!

      WORST PRESIDENT EVER!

My dad is a GM retiree (30 yrs. ago) and a UAW member. He still gets BONUS checks from GM each year even though he is retired. I found out by mistake so now he doesn’t talk too much about his former job. These bonuses are built into the price of the car. The unions have to keep the rank and file happy and voting Democrat. WHICH private company pays their retirees bonuses long after they are gone? NONE that I know off. WHY is it always the Dems and the unions who scheme more than anyone?

I’m getting close to buying a new car, and usually its a Chevy, but these new cars are built with the specifications of obama and the money of taxpayers. I find it difficult to purchase a new car I’ve already put money into. Guess I’ll wait a couple more years for a better vehicle.

Besides a Ford, I recommend any Japanese brand except Subaru…I‘ve owned ’em all. I had a couple of Jeep Grand Cherokees but like anything from Europe, the cost of socialist labor hurts the overall quality and reliability too much (talk to people who own German cars long enough). What fries my eggs about GM is, why didn’t my car company get a handout? Socialism is not only wrong and evil, but simply unfair to those who don’t get the handout…

      @ConstitunalAmerican —

YOU said, “I’m getting close to buying a new car, and usually its a Chevy, but these new cars are built with the specifications of obama and the money of taxpayers. I find it difficult to purchase a new car I’ve already put money into. Guess I’ll wait a couple more years for a better vehicle.”

Let me repeat part of what you said – “but these new cars are built with the specifications of obama…”

Well, first of all, in your ‘name’ you spelled constitutional wrong.

OK. So now President Obama is an automotive engineer? Really? Freaking idiots! All Glen Beck fans and cons are idiots! Did you possibly hear this “fact” about Obama designing cars on Fox “News” like Hannity or some other GOP BS? Maybe from Michelle Malkin? Doesn’t matter, they are all idiots!!!

Democrat party voters are too too ignorant to understand that or even be able to figure it out. They are the mindless zombies and Pavlovian lapdogs of our time. They live in parallel upside down universe that is totally irrational but apparently these people make up 47% of us. That might explain why we have Pelosi , Reid and democrat control of the Senate and the Marxist caucus in the House. What a terrifying thought and disastrous for our survival if it turns put to be true.

Police are switching from the tried and true Crown Victoria “Interceptors” to the new Dodge Charger’s in droves. Mainly because Ford canned the Vic, however I have seen the new Taurus “Interceptors” and those are pretty bad ass rides. I expect more police, county mounties and super troopers will be be using the Charger, cheaper with lots of muscle.

Ford stopped making the Crown Victoria cars..Taurus is too small, smaller trunk, not as wide the reason the Crown Victoria was everywhere as a police vehicle it was the last of the big cars…The Charger and Impala and Taurus are smaller than the Crown victoria, smaller trunk, not as wide…Trucks and suv’s will probably take over as the more popular police vehicle as they are big enough and heck, they can slam into a car and have less dammage than using a Police Car !!

They had Chev Tahoe trucks for a long time,Chev Impala’s ect decades. But in 1996 they stopped full size cars, leaving the Crown victoria the only big car..

As well as Chrysler products (once every police vehicle was a indestructable Chrysler product 1950′s-1989)Many cities use the Dodge Charger, powerful, good handling but the trunk is smaller than the crown Victoria and car isnt as wide either…Trucks/Suv’s would be a good choice..

I couldn’t have record profits if I have record debt. If I owe 100,000 on my house, and I make a salary of 30,000, then that is hardly 30,000 in profits.
