GM Overestimates Chevy Volt Fuel Efficiency By…130 MPG?

In August 2009, General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson announced that the new Chevrolet Volt, GM’s first electric car, would get an estimated 230 miles per gallon. The faltering car company hoped that the exceptionally high government mileage rating could give the Volt a major sales boost. “Having a car that gets triple-digit fuel economy can and will be a game changer for us,” Henderson predicted.
But more than a year later, the Chevy Volt is finally ready to hit sales lots, but may give Henderson his own sticker shock. The EPA mileage rating for the Volt now stands at 93 mgp, significantly less than previous predictions. The Volt‘s rating comes just days after Nissan’s own electric vehicle, the Leaf, received an estimated 99 mpg rating.
So why the huge discrepancy? GM claims it has been working cooperatively with the EPA for years, but the agency reportedly says it had not tested a Volt until just recently.
According to CNN, drivers will be able to drive the Volt for about 40 miles using the car’s lithium-ion batteries. For those driving more than 40 miles at a time, the Volt will use gasoline.
If a car is driven 50 miles in a day, the first 40 miles will use gas and the last 10 miles will use 0.2 gallons — the equivalent of 250 miles per gallon. But, if the driver drives 80 miles, total fuel economy drops to about 100 mpg; 62 mpg for 300 miles.
So while it’s official sticker estimate is significantly lower than the estimated 230 mpg GM boasted a year ago, the good news for GM is that they are now ready to hit sales lots. The bad news (for consumers)? It retails for more than $40,000.

The Unions are the problem and the “green movement” is quickly fading ( it was based on a ginat fraud to begin with). The “green movement” has Spain on the verge of complete collapse. If you cannot convince the Chinese and India to “go green” (which is pointless and they know it) then what worth is it to the US to furtther cripple itself in this fashion ? It won’t help a single bit with Carbon emissions….It’s stupid to persue an agenda that is clearly self destructibve (to all ).

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 10:58amYep. No lib eco global warming tree hugger even considers this. But they feel good. And another is the battery production. Right now there is one regular battery in a car. I had worked previously within a 7 mile radius of a battery factory and they had to post carcinogen and pollution hazard warnings. Now they produce only ONE battery per car. Now with these eco-terrorist cars, they will be bigger and even more hazardous to produce. The area they are made in will have the ‘benefit’ of even more hazardous exposure . Thank you !! And then there is the additional hazards to our paramedics, firemen, police and other rescuers! When in an accident , the battery can basically electify the car do to the electrical connection being made due to the battery and wires being in contact with the car. When the jaws of life are used, they typically have to cut thru metal which may now be in electrical contact and not even mentioning the fluid contact of the battery. Gee, another great idea brought to you by those same who brought us the MERCURY laced energy bulbs. Trade one hazard for a potentially more dangerous other. Do any of these ‘people who want to feel good” think? Developing other sources are good but by no means is it excluding and instead of the current.

Posted on November 29, 2010 at 12:08amI need to have that 93 MPG explained to me – the car can run 35 miles on batteries only (all electric), and when it runs all gas, it gets what, 34 MPG (on par with a non-hybrid Ford Fusion, BTW) – how do you hit 93 MPG?
I think the Gov’t, in collusion with GM, has rigged the rating to benefit the Volt.
If the car runs 35 miles, it gets “infinite” miles to the gallon, since no gas was burned.
If the car runs 70 miles. it uses about 1 gallon of gas (for second 35 miles on gas), for about 70 MPG
If it runs 50 miles. it burns about a half a gallon of gas (for 15 miles on gas), giving it about 100 MPG
Even GM Marketing droids claim about 60 MPG over the life of the car for the average consumer.
Once these cars are “in the wild” the truth will be known, and the Volt will (likely) die.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 8:40pmAnyone wonder why on one hand the Government says eleltricity prices are going to skyrocket, so lets buy/build electric vehicles and why California says water prices are going to skyrocket while the world is building desalination plants to make sea/ocean water drinkable and why the whole global warming thing has been put on the back burner……..we are sheep headed to the slaughter house

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 9:40pmTo PeterthePainter -
1. Anything that sounds too good to be true probably is.
2. Our town ran out and bought one of the first natural gas cars produced as a sign of commitment to “green” technology. That was a number of years ago. The Fire Department now has it, much to their dismay. It turned out to be unreliable, would stall in the most god awful places (apparently while making a left turn through a busy intersection while responding to a call); can’t be repaired by the local mechanics and needs a new gas tank or some other vital piece of equipment not easily available. I suspect that the moment they can legally dump the car, it will suffer a most unfortunate accident, probably witnessed by at least half of the department (who rumor has it, may be cheering wildly).
You can call me a pessimist, but I suspect that the fate of the electric car will be similar.

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 9:52pmWhy is it that any run-time on electric is considered free? It is like saying my car gets 1000mpg, provided I am driving down a steep hill for the whole trip! With electric rates going up, the electric part of the run may become the most expensive part, While consuming a large amount of coal at the ultimate far end of the wire. I am reminded of the 1970s when electric heat first became popular. Electric companies would give special rates of a penny per Kwh if you installed it. Wonder how those folks that got scammed on that feel! Here we go again!

Suggestion to pass onto the fire department for the LNG car; send it to the mythbusters with a polite request to send the car away for good. Preferably with dynamite or other spetacular effects they can come up with (painting it with thermite and torching it seems well done.)

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 11:03pmI‘m going to turn a blind eye toward anyone who just decides they’re going to try and get around the Federal taxes while the Marxists are in office. Redistribution of wealth is theft.
And yes, that means I don’t want the Department of Education, Social Security, Medicare, or Obamacare. All of the money that these programs dole out belong to someone else – it’s not our money, and so to take away these programs will not deny us anything we are owed.
And let’s privatize the National Highway System as well – we don’t need insurance, because the courts are where we’re supposed to get our justice. If someone can’t recompense another for accidents which damage their person or property, then the courts can put the offender to work to pay off the debt he owes to the victim or the victim’s family.
But requiring insurance of any kink, including car insurance, is penalizing someone before they have been proven to have done something wrong, and it is theft because they would not otherwise have chosen to buy it.

A little over a year ago someone I know built his own battery operated car in california. Long story short… he had a bad accident where the battery cell broke open and all fluids leaked out. Being that california has a zillion rules about chem spills it was an expensive clean-up operation. He got a bill for over $12,000 dollars!

Posted on November 27, 2010 at 11:38pmA free market economy would encourage research and creative design for a car that truely meets the needs of the future. The government is restricting and controlling everything including creativity. Diverting agricultural lands into production for fuel is a moral obsentity. We now have a whole car production program geared to using corn based alcohol fuel and we could have had something much better if the free market had been encouraged. With respect to these electric cars…. they still need energy. It is just electric energy. No savings there, especially with the price of electricity in Pennsylvania!

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 1:37amAnd just like their so called Hybrid 1/2 ton trucks. They are nothing more than fast-on off at stop lights technology any one remember the old foot button starters of the 56 pickups… You could actually move a truck with those starters and that is what they have put in the new “Hybrid Trucks”, nothing GM has done is new technology. They just wrap old hardware in new tech to make it moderately effective and live up to new standards.
Chrysler was the only car company in the 70‘s to meet the Corporate CAFE’ standards with products built by the company in the US, they downsized and moved to FWD cars. And now they are on the brink of extinction again. This time it is FORD led by an Aviation CEO that rebounded and they are the ones that are leading the industry in the US for manufacturing but they have to do it outside the US since Labor costs are what is killing the Automobile Industry in the US…

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 8:38amAny one remember the AMC Pacer? A lot of hype but never delivered. Volt is the big GM lie. They lied about the cost, being all electric, the MPG and I bet battery life. MPG is based on new batteries so what happens as these batteries weaken? Range drops rapidly. What happens when that $4000 controllers starts dying? How about dead battery cells? Electrical fire? Flooded? What happens if you get stuck in high water? Battery shorts out. Only a fool or the Gov’t would buy one of these pieces of junk. Give me a Natural Gas powered vehicle any day over an electric. NG is even more plentiful than oil. They burn it off as an unwanted byproduct of oil processing.

Posted on November 28, 2010 at 9:24amSome questions that need explaining: (1) How long does it take the Electric Battery in the Volt to re-charge after driving 40 (est)miles? (2) Is it simply a matter of just plugging an extension cord into a wall outlet at home or does it require expensive hardware/software to recharge it. (3) Is there going to be sufficient Solar, Wind, and other environmentally clean suppliers of the power to re-charge it? The public is being fed nothing but dreams of this wacky administration. Get the facts folks, any way you can!
