GM Resumes Political Giving

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that General Motors Co. has once again started to contribute to political campaigns, marking the end of a once self-imposed ban on political spending. The automobile manufacturer accepted taxpayer dollars last year to help finance bankruptcy restructuring and remains majority-owned by the U.S. government. GM plans to return to public trading next year, allowing the U.S. to begin unloading its 61 percent share of the company.
In the meantime, however, GM spokesman Greg Martin defended the company’s political donations despite a potential conflict of interest. “As we’ve emerged as a new company, we’re not going to sit on the sidelines as our competitors and other industries who have PACs are participating in the political process,” Martin told the Wall Street Journal. GM’s political action committee, he said, is “an effective means for our employees to pool their resources and have their collective voice heard.”
In deciding what criteria the company should use to determine which candidates should receive contributions to their campaigns, Martin said the company supported candidates who “approach issues thoughtfully” and “support a strong auto industry.”
So far, the company’s $90,500 in political contributions have favored mostly Midwestern Democratic candidates, including Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. The list also included House Republican Whip Erick Cantor.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 3:46amI‘ll still get GM but only 70’s and earlier and restore them. I have a 2001 Silverado and the 480LE trans is a pile that I’ve had to have rebuilt twice in the last 2 years. I would have put in a 400 turbo but they tell me it won’t pass smog if I do. Makes me want to go to the California Smog Board and stick it where the sun don’t shine. It won’t be going in straight either if I do.

How-ever since the bail-out and now with this latest fiascal I will now become the proud owner of a FORD. How dare GM take tax-payers money to donate to any political campaign. What suck-ups ! Posted on September 23, 2010 at 2:09amI am sorry for those of you that may be employed by GM. You are poisoned now and will never see another dime of my money for a new vehicle. You already have it all now anyway! I suggest you all QUIT and let a company that is big enough to fail, fail! The beauty of the free market is how it fixes corruption. In this case a large portion of a corrupt Union would have been de-funded.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 1:25amPerhaps it’s not because GM wants more money but because they have “seen the light” so to speak and have decided that a liberal ideology economically best suits the country, economy, and therefore their well being. It‘s the fallacy of faulty causation to assume they gave money to Democrats because they want more and in fact is less logical in my opinion than saying it’s merely a change in ideology because are there reasons why GM would need more government money? If there aren’t, then that whole conspiracy theory is shot down.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 2:13amOh yes they will need more money. They have underfunded pensions to cover and not enough people in the world can buy enough GM cars to make the payout viable. Oh I can guarantee they will be back BEGGING for more of YOUR money from the Marxist in Chief.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 9:47amNotaleming- GM does not need to beg at all, they recently applied for 14.4 BILLION in additional loans from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced technology. Now ask yourself, we have GM unable to pay back the taxpayers and our Government is entertaining loaning them an additional 14.4 BILLION, they have enough money for political contributions, and they had a robust amount of money for the CEO to run television ads across the nation blatantly lying to the American people that the money was paid back, they have had four CEO’s since Obama seized GM all earning Millions and now they plan on offering stock to foreign investors immediately after the November elections, and not one Senator or Congressional leader seems to have a problem with this.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 1:22amGet some facts, this is our government not GM. That was not a bail out but a loan which %10 was paid back and now for the rest our government has ownership! This is a prime example of why we need small government. If we had supported American jobs to begin with, GM would still be over paying employees, and I mean that sarcastically. All this hate for GM and the Union should be pointed at our government. Stop and think, without some sort of workers union you end up with big business like Walmart paying $12.50 max and pitiful benefits, as well as sweatshops in China.

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 1:15amOwned by our government, do you really think they want Americans to have good jobs? The union excuse is old and tired. Plain and simple, we won WW2 due to our auto industry (look it up), naturally the industry which basically created our middle class is going to go down so they can have us working for slave laborers like walmart. How long do you think a company lasts when competition pays its employees less gets tax breaks by our government, while countries like Japan put a %15 tax on imported cars which goes to their auto manufacturers? Tell me someone isn’t trying to destroy our country.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 11:47pmSo the politicians stole our money, gave it to GM, and now GM gives it back to the politicians. Gee, I am so shocked! Nah. Well, I don’t see any crime here, except for the payoff’s. More of the Chicago style corruption. And they wonder why the Tea Party is virtually starting to have their way with these clowns. So, when the Tea Party people are in power, let the prosecutions of these thieves begin. I don’t see any difference from the GM/politicians to the city mayor/counsel people in California that are now being prosecuted for stealing millions by having their hefty paychecks that they did not even come close to earning.

Posted on September 22, 2010 at 11:15pmThis is not surprising. What pi$$es me off, is, as an American, I have helped bail them out and in a sense a partial owner. We are paying for Union pensions and benefits yet we get nothing but the bill. If they want to donate money, do it with profits, if they ever actually earn one again. We give them our money to save their company, and then they turn around and donate to the very people that ruined their company in the first place. I don’t get it……the corruption is so obvious and blatant…yet no one complains. Just look at the comment from BROKER101. he wants the union to have “equal power” Is this where America is?
