Since you won‘t be able to sit in the cockpit of NASA’s Atlantis space shuttle while its on display in the Kennedy Space Center till the end of 2012, here are some insider photos. Astronauts operated all these buttons and switches until the shuttle program ended earlier this year.
collectSpace.com had the opportunity to to photograph the cockpit while the power was on for one of the last times.
The Daily Mail reports that Atlantis took the place of Explorer in the Florida space center, which was on display for almost 20 years and will be moved to Space Center Houston. The Daily Mail notes that the Atlantis exhibit itself cost $100 million.
Last Friday, NASA also shut down the space shuttle Discovery for the last time. This shuttle, which Space.com reports is the oldest of NASA’s remaining orbiters, will be put on display at Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:22pmHow sad canit get? We have people who can build anything, But we also have people who will not do anything but try and do us in. If we could only stop most of the giveaways and start building for the present and future. We can do it AMERICA we only need the ledership and the will. We have the will but when we have no real leaders and I do mean leaders the will goes away. I will not vote for anyone who is in office the next time around. They all talk a good game. But this talk can only take yoy so far. They all try and pit us aganst each other. Real AMERICANS work togather. God bless AMERICA and MARRY CHRISTMAS.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:45pmThis is representative of where two paths had merged in human existence for a very brief period 50-2001 then diverged forever more. We are going backward and downward, no longer reaching for the stars but for a free meal, a government pension, a bottle of booze to keep warm with. Maybe from there we can start up again? Maybe.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:21pmThe collective national achievement of sending a man safely to the moon was the peak of exploration and space achieve for the United States. It was so significant that it will take the next nation 50 years to accomplish the same. And now sadly, we have declined to the point that we do not even have a manned space program. By any measure, this nation has been in steady decline since the 1970s. It is time for us to once again select true leaders with the national’s best interest rather than their own as a priority and move this nation ahead.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:47pmSelect leaders from the very declining society. The lost need leaders but the lost themselves need to find the truth about the laws of God. Then maybe they can be led. I‘m afraid we’ve had our run, from this point onward we are headed not up but down.

This is a small example of “the fundamental change of America!”
Bend over America !
But America is still half asleep – the other half of the time is spent eating Doritos, Ho Ho’s, hot dogs, pizza, grease soaked hamburgers and french fries, drinking beer, watching football, playing video games and generally getting fat.
Only a really stupid population would allow their country to degenerate into what it has become. In that category, Americans are the best !

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 12:50pmI can still remember the days when we used to police our own actions and that of others. It died in 1980. Moral relativism caught on. Those anti God people declared God is dead and the age of man was now upon us. Our God given laws and scriptures were used against us to replace with human understanding. Thou shalt not judge was the rule of the day. Everyone shut up and those who did not got beat down by those who said, who are you to tell me how to live mylife. We’ve gotten more stupid from hence forth.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 10:05amThat damned fool in the White House has surrendered the technological high ground to countries that couldn’t launch a hot air balloon when Armstrong walked on the moon. And now America must go, hat in hand, to the Russians to beg for a lift to the space station that America built. Disgusting.
A case could be built for retiring the shuttles programme. After all it was 40 year old technology and NASA was stuck in low earth orbit for far too long. The real crime is that stupid in the White House canceled the replacement programme too. He has doomed America to be a second rate ‘also ran’ in space as in so many other areas.
Let’s hope that the American people are smart enough to throw jug head and his huge wife, out onto the street where he can get back to organizing.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 10:01amI love the idea of exploring space. BUT…BUT…we are BROKE, folks. And there is no, repeat, zero, constitutional authority for the federal government to explore space. Let the private sector do it.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 10:43amHistorically speaking, GOVERNMENTS have always started the exploration into new areas or ventures. Later on, entrepreneurs take over and greatly expand the access to and value of these new areas. We are seeing that now with the SpaceX launchers and the Dragon capsule which will not only provide less expensive cargo to the ISS but will be capable of carrying astronauts years sooner than NASA’s “Super Apollo” capsule. And in years to come, we’ll probably see commercial spaceplanes capable of taking visitors to orbit. Instead of killing the space program, Barry is a victim of unintended consequences and has unleashed the commercial market…..too bad, because he did truly want to kill off NASA too!

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 9:09amThe only good thing to come of this is that the private sector is stepping up in space vehicle exploration. But the direction we had as a nation is gone. We can’t ignore that Bush canceled the shuttle too early…before a replacement. And in my view it did not need canceling. The shuttles still worked and had many many missions left in them.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 6:35amYes they’ve had a hundred year plan to destroy this nation from within but they have kicked it into high gear. With this action they’ve forced us to fund the Russian Communist regime. Once again our liberals finding a way to funneling money to our enemies.
They’ve disassembled our manufacturing instinctually, as to prevent us from gearing up to another world war. Spreading us through out the world with these small wars weakening to the point we could not fare off a global attack. As we know China is gearing up, Russia has reinvigorated its Marxist Nationalism. We’ve seen the spread of Communist protest throughout Europe as they have allied with the Islamist revolutions as well as South American Marxist. It a perfect storm of Marxist and Fascist. Our fearless leader is dismanteling the weapons that could stay them off while sitting by Iran’s proliferation of nuclear elements. While they may not have the bomb yet, they are preparing for mass production.
Worst of all we’re probably funding much of this with our global aid

Right on. I’ve never been a big fan of the government space industry. Don’t get me wrong, going to the moon was super cool and a great display of our will to accomplish greatness. That said, the space shuttle was a huge waste of money in my opinion, you could get men up there much less expensively than using the shuttle.
The only problem with private space is that I see the government standing there at every corner with a “STOP!” sign trying to impede them as much as possible. Not right now, not as long as they’re not sending up lots of active missions, but rather once they start succeeding in a huge publicly visible way.
