AMSTERDAM (AP)—An Ajax supporter ran onto the field and tried to attack the goalkeeper of visiting AZ Alkmaar in a Dutch cup match Wednesday, leading to the game being suspended after just 36 minutes.
The fan, identified by Ajax as a 19-year-old who had been drinking, approached Alkmaar’s Esteban Alvarado from behind, but the Costa Rican keeper saw the supporter in time and skillfully tripped him.
Immediately afterward, Alvarado, enraged by the unexpected and unprovoked attack, kicked the supporter twice where he lay before security guards dragged the intruder off the pitch.
Referee Bas Nijhuis then gave Esteban a red card for violence. Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek ordered his side to walk out in protest.
“I understand that Esteban was defending himself, but he walked to him (the supporter) and kicked him multiple times,” Nijhuis said, defending the decision to send the goalkeeper off. “He could also have walked away.”
Ajax was leading the round-of-16 match 1-0 after a goal by Gregory van der Wiel. Attempts to convince Alkmaar to continue were fruitless.
Alkmaar’s players “didn’t feel safe anymore in this situation,” said club director Toon Gerbrands.
Ajax apologized for the security lapse and said the supporter will receive a lifetime ban from games.
Dutch football association director Bert van Oostveen said his organization is considering the incident, but is not certain whether the game will be replayed.
“Maybe I would have done the same thing, maybe not,” said Ajax coach Frank de Boer, a renowned former defender for Netherlands’ national team, of Alvarado’s reaction. “But emotionally I do understand it.”

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 11:57amI totally agree. Soccer is a liberal activity. This was the tool used to push the “there are no winners and losers” when let’s face it, they are playing soccer they are all losers. It’s a game everyone can play. There are no tryouts so kids don‘t learn that you always don’t make the team. Those who think soccer is this great sport. Let’s look at it this way. We could use all the professional soccer players in the world, swapping players as you like, and battle against all the NFL players in every sport in the world. The soccer players might beat the NFL guys at soccer.

Posted on December 23, 2011 at 12:15amhahaha, I would love to see a single one of you play a soccer game full length. Better yet, you play against me and I will legally show you just how physical soccer can be. I doubt you will even be able to walk after the game, for days, if not weeks. That is, if you could even make it through a half. Not to mention, it’s really a team sport dependent upon a great number of different components. I agree, it isn’t as fun to watch, but don’t be fulled, I broke my thumb, arm, and leg playing soccer. Also, knocked one guy unconscious and split another guys head wide open. This isn’t even to mention the countless number of people I had crushed while playing sweeper. I played hockey, basketball, football, baseball, and volleyball, along with soccer. Soccer requires more endurance than any of the sports. Hockey is far more exhausting, but you get to sub. Basketball is about the closest to Soccer, but it is different. Yeah, liberals all play soccer, funny stuff. Of course, may of you couldn’t compete in any sport at a professional level, so it really doesn’t mean anything to you about what is psychically required of an athlete to play any of these sports. I don’t know what it is lately, but more and more I am finding I maybe don’t belong on this site anymore. After an entire year, a full member to GBTV, I just am starting to feel like I can’t relate to alot of the comments on these pages anymore. This just started happening when these campaigns started.

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 10:01amSports is a way of controlling the masses.
Give them enough to live on job or no job, but not enough to get ahead. Restrict their freedoms. They have nothing to be passionate about. So let them have sports. The rich can enlarge their holding, have the freedom to travel (carbon tax does not affect them) & have more rewarding careers.
Marx said religion is the opiate of the masses. Well without religion sports will have to substitute. Gotta keep the epsilons engaged somehow.
Ain’t the welfare state grand!

I notice the one thing that never makes it into the conversation is the “working your ass off part” of being rich. Also, “being rich” has a lot to do with how wealth is managed, not just the amount.
It’s called struggle, sacrifice, blood, sweat & tears for a reason. In the end, it really boils down to tenacious motivation and personal responsibility – two rare commodities it seems.
Don‘t knock the rich until you’ve tried it.

You are probably right about 50 years ago – nowadays, the masses are controlled with televisions and video games. Think about how much time people actual spend doing nothing in front of them – living their dreams by watching “dancing with the stars, soap operas or the bachelor”.
A total waste of time but a great way to get away from reality.
On a side note – have you ever read “A Brave New World”? When reading it, it came to mind that TV is our “soma”.

You’re preaching to the choir. All I‘m saying is don’t paint all rich people with such a broad brush. Not all wealth is measured in monetary increments.
As far as laws go, laws only affect honest people – just like gun laws only affect law abiding citizens.

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 8:07amI haven’t seen the video, but, don’t mess with a goalie. My only question is where was the defense? They are supposed to protect the goalie, even against angry fans! Not a fan of european soccer, but am a total fan of soccer itself. My son himself is a pretty darn good goalie. I hope he wouldn’t have kicked this guy, but he certainly wouldn’t have allowed the idiot to attack him. He’s learned a takedown or two in his taekwondo days!

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 8:44amI was a keeper. My son is a keeper. Try it on us and see what happens. We wouldn’t have just kicked him. The idea of an appropriate level of violence is just dumb. If you are attacked, hurt the attacker so badly that they never want to try it again. Do you really want the keeper to have to peek out the locker room door after every game wondering who is going to attack him next? I say let the attackers be ware. In the future, you know you are going to get red carded….get your money’s worth!

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 12:59pmIt takes a lot of guts to do what goalies do! As I say to people, you have to be 50% aggressive and 50% crazy! Who else would wrap his body around a ball just before the shooter takes his shot? Or take a dive hands fully out to block a ball and land completely on his side without using his hands? Also, goalies are very protective of their goal. Kind of like German Shepherd to his home. Don’t mess with them!

“Any non-players entering the playing field risk being violently assaulted by players”
You go to a baseball game and you’ll see a warnings about the possibility of being hit by a baseball. If you still go to the game you are deemed to have assumed that risk, which affects liability issues.

Guess what this sport is: throw the ball, run run run, get thrown to the ground, “act like you (sic) dying. Get up repeat for” 60 minutes. That’s right, American football. And perhaps you didn’t realize it, but NFL fans get drunk while watching games just as soccer fans. By the way, words such as “sport” and “drunk” don’t need to be capitalized. Maybe you were too busy playing football in school to learn anything in English class, but capitalizing random nouns and adjectives looks strange.
