‘God Is an Imaginary Friend’: Atheist Billboard Ignites Controversy in Colorado

Atheist Billboard in Denver Is Sparking Debate | Boulder Atheists

Atheists have a way with billboards. In fact, it’s one of the primary methods many non-believers use to communicate with the public at large. This is exactly the method a Denver, Colorado-based group, called Boulder Atheists, is using to spread its message. Reaction to the group’s newest billboard, which targets those who hold a belief in God, has ranged from giggles to anger.

Boulder Atheists has erected three billboards that each read, “God is an imaginary friend. Choose reality, it will be better for all of us.” This statement, which will clearly offend the religious, is not intended to start problems, the group says.

“We are more interested in opening a dialogue than upsetting you,” the group proclaims on its web site. “We don’t ask you to stop believing in your version of a super-natural being. We do ask that you consider not forcing your religious views on others.”

But another portion of the explanation may only add to the frustration the religious feel as a result of the billboard’s presence:

One of the reasons we put the billboard up is that we are concerned when religious people feel they have not only the right, but the obligation, to force their religious views on others. Examples are proselytizing in the military, educational systems, and government. Another example is the attacks by religious people on gays, lesbians, and abortion providers.

Abraham Aryan, a local businessman, isn‘t happy about the billboards’ presence.

“Anything with a derogatory message I don’t think should spread around. But they’re welcome to do it,” Aryan said. “Welcome to America, that’s one of the beautiful things about living here is you can do that.”

KUSA-TV has more:

This isn’t the first time the group has publicly railed against religion. ABC-7 reports:

In 2008, the group paid for 11 billboards around Denver and Colorado Springs that questioned the existence of God. A billboard at East Colfax Avenue and Quebec Street in Denver said, “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone.

The group also erected a sign at then-Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden’s Christmas decorations in 2009.

A year later, the group paid for three billboards protesting the nativity scene at Denver’s City and County Building. The signs said, “Stop government support of religion, move this Denver nativity scene to a church.”

Considering Boulder Atheists’ track record, the alliance of non-believers is certainly not likely to apologize or rescind. In the end, the group’s leaders have the free speech and freedom to post such messages, but they may not spark the discussion they’re hoping for by taking such a confrontational route.

As the billboard says I can say I have chosen reality. The reality is He is our God and in Him we live and we survive.

There is, beyond the azure blue
A God, concealed from human sight
He tinted skies with heav’nly hue
And framed the worlds with His great might (chorus)
There was a long, long time ago
A God whose voice the prophets heard
He is the God that we should know
Who speaks from His inspired word (chorus)
Our God, whose Son upon a tree
A life was willing there to give
That He from sin might set man free
And evermore with Him could live (chorus)

      Chorus:
There is a God, He is alive
In Him we live and we survive
From dust our God created man
He is our God, the great I Am

These atheists are saying that we are forcing our religion on them which is not true, they, however are trying to force their non-belief on everyone! If any atheist came to my house, they would find my house full of Jesus, in word, song, two bibles, and a very thick Strongs Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible! Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except by Him. John 14:6. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:16-18. And that name is; JESUS!!

I wrote this song to express how I feel about my religious experience and how I view Jesus. I have tried churches but they always seem to want more money while showing less concern for my well being when I needed help. My personal belief is that you can find Jesus inside your hart without having to go to some church for approval. I can only speak for my self through my music but I feel good about my salvation.

i am glad to see so many people speaking of their belief in God and Jesus Christ here. I am one of you who believe. I am very saddened by other blogs and websites, they have people who speak of unbelief. I for one am doing all in my small power to convince all around me that there is a God by my actions. Which means i am trying my hardest to keep His commandments and also love my neighbor. If we all truly believe in God, then we would try his works to do. Not just complain about how when we were in a church nobody came to help me when i was in need. Did you go and help someone else in need? Did Jesus complain when nobody came to help him? Did all the prophets of old complain when nobody helped them? We are saved by grace after all we can do.

Hell is a real place invented in the mind of gentle Jesus to punish heathens for the enjoyment of good Christians who watch from heaven. Nothing makes a mild Christian happier than the thought of an eternity looking down at billions upon billions of Hindu’s and Buddhists and Jans other innocent people as they writhe like maggots in the fires of hell. Yeah, though they might lived good lives they didn‘t take to the doctrine of the one true church and that church’s intolerant, vengeful, bitter god will certainly cast these innocents into the lake of fire.

Dear Atheists.. When I was a child.. I had an invisible friend..I knew Him as God..then later I knew about His Son Jesus..but I was not aware of just how important Jesus was..and let me tell you…He is incredibly important..Can you imagine that He was with God creating from the foundations of the world with His Father God..and that everything that was made was made by Him , for Him and through Him and without Him..nothing was made..And God the Father loved the world so much…that He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins..And Jesus was born into the world and He did die for our sins and He rose the third day and He still lives..His Spirit lives in our hearts and there are ones right now living in the kingdom of God. In Him is everything and without Him is nothing..Without Him..you will never know joy and peace or have the hope of living forever in joy and happiness with Him…I hope you reconsider..Seek Him and you will find Him..knock and He will open the door..Ask..and He will give you.. Blessings to you..

ROSE-ELLEN: “people can‘t help what they truly believe or don’t. God knows their hearts and an honest decent athiest will not be condemned for not having the brains/heart to believe. A decent athiest will say yes to Christ in other ways that replace a cognitive assent.”

What you have stated is not Biblical and a lie from the pit of Hell. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. He that believeth not, shall be Damned. You must accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior with your heart and mind. You have a choice. Jesus came to die for our sins. If it is as you say, then His death would have been in vain. Satan would like nothing better than people believing being honest and decent will earn them their salvation.

The atheists should look on the 700 Club website on the people who died and came back to life. Some saw heaven, some saw hell. There were atheists in the videos that now are believers.

When I was 11 years old, I was pronounced clinically dead for more than 5 minutes. When I was “dead” I saw nothing. No family, no Jesus, no hell. It was very dark and very quiet and there was something very…calming about that. I was an atheist at the time, having been convinced by recently reading the Bible cover to cover.

Does this convince you not to believe in God? No, eh? Then why would I trust the word of someone who had the opposite experience? Personal experience does NOT prove anything. Not my position and not yours either.

      @ Gombo,

Excellent sarcasm, I hear your point. Please know that not every Christian imagines hell for every one with a different opinion than their own. Crying out Jesus’ name is not the only test of faith, nor the guarantor of eternal rest with God, just as Atheist inspired comments do not cement eternal damnation. God is much more fair, reasonable, and loving to permanently disavow his children for being foolish in their interpretations of life. Christianity is a message to be delivered with care and concern to all the world. Representatives of that message need to possess compassion not judgment. Unfortunately some of us are foolish, too. Thank God for mercy, for without it we would truly be lost.

@INVERSIONARY THEORY I have always had faith in God..and He has rewarded that faith..I know that He is the great…I AM.. I read once in the Bible that if you do not live in Him..then you will die without instruction.. and it happened once…and I was in sheer panic..not knowing where to go or what to do..but He allowed me to come back.. I never lost consciousness.. A child who dies and is not at the age of accountability..will not be held responsible..but someone who has reached the age of accountability and has heard the word of God and rejects Him..will be held accountable..The ones who are in Him when they die..will go to a peaceful resting place..while the ones not in Him..will go to a place of torment to await judgement. You were only dead for 5 minutes..and you returned..Don’t you suppose that you came back for a reason? Your destination was intended to be here..for the time being. If God wants you…He will have you. I read a book once of a preacher and his wife..her brother..a devout atheist came to visit..he requested to see their new church..he didn’t even get through the church door and he fell on his face before the Lord with conviction in his heart…You cannot come to Him unless He calls you..then the choice is yours.

Ashes… I have not considered any purpose to my life other than that I have assigned. I do not believe in God…and if it is God’s purpose for me to spread that message, he is cruel indeed. I saw my experience as confirmation of what I believe in my heart. I do not now, and never have, seen any logical reason to believe in the God of the Bible. Apparently, asking someone to logically justify their ideas is evil and if so, I embrace evil. I eagerly await the spontaneous regeneration of an amputated limb without medical intervention to prove me wrong. I’m going to upset some of you on my first post here.
Most of you here posting can understand that a large majority of the world, in general, are believers of a god or God. However, many like atheists turn ‘anti-religious’ beliefs into their religion and their billboard is their preaching tool. Their hateful fists raised at an empty sky and their middle finger pointed at morality in general. Oh, but wait, in the world there does exists FALSE religion everywhere, and because people are easily informed or “brainwashed” for that matter, they can easily see how false and disgusting the acts of FALSE religion are.
I say FALSE, because like in the Highlander movie, there can only be ONE. One true people accepted by God Almighty. Every single human being on this planet has a job they did not sign up for, and that is to reach salvation, to survive the promised destruction of the wicked in our Earth. A good portion of you talk about hell like you’ve been there yourself, hell is here on Earth, living with all these awful human beings, full of greed and hatred and with a the other things that make this Earth a Hell. C’mon man, have you seen some of these Gargoyles that run our country?
Here is the key, find God, and I don’t mean, Jesus (God’s son of course, i mean his Dad) and not the thousands of ancient deities , no,I mean really find our creator. Find his real name. Then you may start on a path to true salvation. Salvation from what? Armageddon of course. duh.

There is simply no power on earth stronger than PRAYER. God speaks to us through Scripture and we answer Him with our PRAYERS. God is our Mighty Defender, our Creator, our Rock, our Protector…He created us, just as buildings didn‘t build themselves or great meals didn’t appear alone.. neither did we.

The saddest thing on earth to see is a person who tries to deny the existence of their Creator. But now, this is much more than a “difference of opinion” folks…this is an out and out attempt by groups who want to destroy America to discourage Believers. Also this is Satan trying to corrupt and destroy God’s people. PS for the poster who said Christians take great pleasure in thinking of themselves as saved and others as not…how sad are you? True Christians know they have no say in whomever GOD saves and that there are many routes up the mountain to meet Jesus, that this life is but moments in GOD’S time and an opportunity for people to CHOSE GOD! Unlike the cult known as Islam (Satan inspired and man designed), GOD wants us to come to Him of our free will and this is our opportunity to make that choice (this life). Cultist and Satanists will use every device to discourage us, because they know that ALL we have to do to prove the existence of GOD is to ask Him. All we have to do is get off by ourselves and with an open heart, ASK HIM “are you for REAL, GOD?” and then wait (not long) and we will get the answer.

I’m really not sure why everyone is so upset about this, as this is actually quite complimentary. Atheists are simply adding God to the list of imaginary things that they compulsively can’t stop rambling on about. We may not agree with this assessment of God’s nonexistence, but as one can clearly see, atheists actually LOVE their imaginary things.

      For example:

      1. Secular Utopia

      2. Atheist Reason

      3. Atheist Social Skills

      4. Anti-Science Republicanism and Religiousness

      5. Atheist Higher Intelligence

See what I mean? All of these are demonstrably imaginary, outright false, or believed in by the atheist to such an extreme that they cease to resemble reality. Yet the atheist drones on and on about them as if afflicted by some sort of social disorder.

Considering atheists hold all of these imaginary things in such high esteem, one can only conclude that they hold God (by their thinking, the ultimate imaginary belief) to such heights that it can only be described as — well, heavenly.

I mean I am going to hell because I dont believe in God but Hitler is in heaven since he was a “ I am a devout christian” and used things such as the books of Moses to defend there actions towards the Jews. Okay, he was evil but according to Christians all you have to do is accept Christ and Hitler said he did. In fact he outlawed atheism. Wow to me it seems sad that you guys will be in heaven while your friends and family are burning along with billions of others for not believing. Sick part is you all call that paradise but I dont know I would rebel and try to save them since its forever and that seems a little unjust and not fair.

This has been verified by the doctor. I went to hell. Not a nice place. Christ came, He said I didn’t belong there. I am alive today because of Him. I am writing a book about my experience. interesting….I tend not to believe those who say they saw some light…but I’ve heard doctors who have resuscitated people..and when they first wake up they talk about hell…then totally repress it..and when the doctor asks them about it a few days later they deny it…it was so horrific…

The phenomenon of “near death experiences” actually have a logical theory. We have a natural chemical in our brain that causes hallucinations when unregulated, and trauma has potential to release it in unregulated doses in the brain. This of course can cause such hallucinations as “light beyond the tunnel”. Such experiences are very irregular.

And also, the obvious fact that if you truly died, you’re not “coming back to life”. The heart, the brain, the cells, the organs to not shut off as quickly as a flat line. Even if doctors loose response, you’re body is still technically alive in the sense that cells and organs are still functioning. So many people seem not to understand the true functioning of a body.

As a post script, a doctor decided to test out such claims, and put pictures on a wall that someone could only see ascending up (those “out of body” experiences some people claim.) No one who has claimed of an experience yet has been able to say what those pictures are, even though they should of easily seen them if they were truly floating in the room.

Such experiences are the most bogus “proofs” there are to an afterlife when not only has no one died, but the brain is so prone to hallucinations.

@ Libertarian4life why does that thinking constitute what is wrong with society? I am surprised to hear that statement from someone who by their screen name claims to be a libertarian. First of all as a libertarian myself I am a believer in the one true GOD, that being said I support anyone’s decision to believe whatever they want to believe and would fight to protect that right for them even if I think they are a loon. I can take that stand because my eternity is not effected by anything you do or believe, it is only effected by my choices in life. God does not want anyone brought to him by force but by their own choice. God is where freedom dwells, God is proven by science to exist if you open your mind and look at what is right in front of us all. One example, God created the heavens and the earth from nothing….A lot Physicists who are atheists believe in string theory and string theory states and I am paraphrasing here that our universe was created from an explosion that was smaller than the size of a pinhead and the universe expanded on many dimensional planes. Sounds like our universe was created from nothing to me.

If a word does not have a concept attached to it… it communicates no thing. Have fun reading sentences with the non-word God in it :) It’s kinda fun when you figure that part out, sentences turn into absolute gibberish.

Theists, don’t go getting cute either, please do define God for me, communicate what it is – without using any historical definition of what God is and without using a dialectic to define what god is not or what ‘is not’ God.

Why should I have to “disprove” someone else’s claim? It is the person who is making the claim that something exists who has to prove it.

I believe we are all tied into the Matrix, and none of this is real. Prove me wrong. See how silly that is?

Atheism is a rejection of belief. As an atheist, I am simply saying I haven’t been given enough evidence to believe in their claim.

If someone says they were abducted by aliens, do you just flat out accept that? Do you ask them questions and seek proof? Or do you take it upon yourself to DISPROVE that they weren’t abducted? What if their evidence is insufficient to you?

Why do Christians not believe in Allah? Maybe Christians are the ones that are wrong? Would they still be a Christian if they were born in Iran? Or more likely would they believe that Allah was the one true God and every other religion was false? I’m sure people who believed in Zeus and Apollo felt the same way.

Fact is, Christianity wasn‘t the first religion and it sure as heck wont’ be the last. Christianity hijacked Judaism and simply made Jesus God, so they wouldn’t be breaking the 1st commandment.

Mormonism hijacked Christianity, as did Islam. Judaism hijacked their beliefs by taking a buffet style selection process to the other beliefs that were prevalent at and around that time. They then took those beliefs and fit it to a story around their people.

MODERATIONISBEST – Tell that to Richard Dawkins. It’s an exercise MIB and besides the Law of Noncontradiction already disproves your little sarcastic thought-joke of proving you wrong how we’re not jacked into the matrix.

Back to Dawkins, he’s always trying to disprove the existence of God: that if there was this thing God out there, there should be some evidence laying around. It’s asinine. He’s trying to apply Scientific Hypothesis to a metaphysical non-thing, that has no definition and no concept. All he has to do is say there is no concept, hence nothing to prove or disprove, get back to me when you have a concept or at least a definition.

Regarding an Atheist and rejection. In order to reject something, it has to be some thing. Is God a thing? Oops, we’re getting into definitions and concepts. Maybe as you said: God isn’t real….God is not real. Now you’re telling me what God is not. How do you know anything about that which is not definable or conceptual? You don‘t even know what you’re rejecting. On the flip side, no one knows what they’re accepting with God either. It’s not communicable, conceptual, definable, hence the word intellectually (as close as I can get it analogously) is a void. E.G. I don’t believe in _______. That’s what it looks like to me when you act the Atheist. Get back to me when you can define God and actually use the word in a sentence, then I’ll entertain what you do not believe. Get it?

Oh little atheist, the problem is that you clearly don’t understand how this works, or the difference between supported and unsupported assertions. You were doing okay until you stated:

“God isn’t real, neither is Jesus, or Allah, or Z”

With this statement, you’re now the one making the claim that needs to be supported, whether it is a negative claim or not. The philosophical burden of proof is on you to support your assertion.

If I were to make the “positive” assertion that “It is likely that god exists”, I would then provide evidence for the theological, the cosmological, the teleological, the moral, the aesthetic, and the ontological arguments to support my assertion. However, I did not assert anything outside of your ignorance, which is pretty apparent.

You have made a “negative” assertion, however, and the burden is now on you to support that assertion. I’ll even make it easier for you and remove Zeus and Allah from the picture, so you simply have to support you claim that “God” and “Jesus” do not exist.

I look forward to your response, as well as the poor logic and evidentiary cherry-picking that will surely exist within it.

Atheism is the acceptance of a belief that God does not exist. Although I believe strongly thah God does exist, neither of us can prove our points. Therefore, we both accept our beliefs based on faith and will continue to practice our religions accordingly.

If only that bore any relationship to reality, it’d be a good comment.

For a belief to be a religion, it has to include faith. Atheism has no faith in anything that cannot be proven. The existence of God and particularly things like the Resurrection and the afterlife are not proven, and have no empirical evidence to support them. Thus, faith comes into play. You have FAITH that God exists, that Christ is the Lord and Savior, and if you follow Him you’ll go to heaven when you die.

Atheists say “Eh…no proof. Sorry, I can’t accept that.” That’s it. Geez, I’m not even an atheist and I know this.

Some atheists are jerks about their atheism, but a lot of them come by it honestly – they feel persecuted and hounded by the constant barrage of religion they get in every day life, particularly in politics. You know, like the way Christians claim they are persecuted and hounded for their beliefs (We make up 80% of the country, and you can‘t hardly get elected to office if you’re not a Christian, but we’re persecuted. Gotcha.)

Rights come from the creator. Just because you don’t believe in “God” doesn’t mean you completely rule out a creator.

I don’t understand atheist groups. Might as well blindly believe in the flying spaghetti monster if you want to join a group. Maybe they get tired of the Christians broadcasting their religion everywhere, and treating anyone else doing the same as an attack on Christianity.

your sarcasm came through loud and clear on the first read. Laughed to myself cuz it was exactly what I was thinking when reading the article and comments. In fact, this is the first time in weeks I’ve commented on anything here because objectivity, sarcasm and humor seem to have left this site of late for the most part and I wanted to encourage you to keep it up. It’s refreshing.
Funny how folks don’t seem to be able to decipher all sorts of things these days–very quick on the draw–not really seeing what’s right in front of them–in fact, so quick to draw, they shoot themselves in the foot. Maybe people should take a breath and not look at the surface, but more so the content and they would absolutely see the sarcasm in your post—that goes for a lot of other things, too.

      @ berebel73

      I understood you sarcasm.

what is truly amazing is that if you just look at the history of the United States you can see what taking God out of a society does, especially when we WERE created under judeo-christian principles.
God tells us in the old testament that Blessed is the NATION who calls me Lord. In the new testament Jesus tells us “it would have been better for you on that day to not have known me than to have known me and let me go” remember “every TONGUE, TRIBE AND NATION” will be judged.
my point being is that we have had the blessings of God upon this nation (athiest live under those same blessings yet do not recognize it’s originator.) The ten commandments are not restrictive, they are the tenants for a free society, the more internal restraint you have the less external restraint you will need.
THE MORE WE REMOVE GOD FROM OUR SOCIETY AND THE HEARTS OF MAN THROUGH THE CODE WORDS TOLERANCE, POLITICAL CORRECTNESS, AND THE LIKE THE MORE FREEDOMS WE LOSE AND THE CLOSER WE SPIRAL TO THE CESSPOOL OF THE RELIGION OF SATAN HIMSELF “SOCIALISM”

if you want power to control a people you can either take the Word of God and control the message (that has happened but we had a reformation, man knew the power of God’s message to control the masses, God knew it would be better for each individual to have that message to control oneself) or you can take The Word of God and (try to) completely destroy it (and live by man made freedoms).

Atheists don‘t believe in GOD and thusly don’t give him the respect that he deserves by writting his name correctly. Thanks to the atheists/progressives and their misintrepretation of the first amendment we have allowed them to remove any mention of GOD in government which completely goes against what our founding fathers intended.

Agreed. There are some interesting bits of irony within this story though.

A group demanding with righteous indignation their right to be free from spiritual viewpoints being thrust upon them…..repeatedly goes out of its way to intrude its spiritual viewpoints on others.

Demand others respect differing viewpoints… while distributing messaging openly mocking and hostile of these views in others.

While its not uncommon for those preaching tolerance to be the least tolerant, it is a little funny to see this type of illogical behavior from a group of people who base their belief – in their ability to use logic and reason.

Really? Trying to convert military, students, and government to religion? Since when? When have we tried to convert our military to christian? Our government? The billboard made me laugh. The kind of laugh when you know something the other person doesnt. Ayn Rand’s famous quote in her novel “We the Living” -
“…whatever anyone chooses to call God—is one’s highest conception of the highest possible. And whoever places his highest conception above his own possibility thinks very little of himself and his life. It’s a rare gift, you know, to feel reverence for your own life and to want the best, the greatest, the highest possible, here, now, for your very own. To imagine a heaven and then not to dream of it, but to demand it. ”
And in Atlas Shrugged she writes:
“For centuries, the battle of morality was fought between those who claimed that your life belongs to God and those who claimed that it belongs to your neighbors – between those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of ghosts in heaven and those who preached that the good is self-sacrifice for the sake of incompetents on earth. And no one came to say that your life belongs to you and that the good is to live it.”

@DEMO..You are right not to believe in the Abrahamic religion..as I said..it was a church who wanted to take Jerusalem for their city and that is why they shaped Mohammad’s visions for him ..It is an entirely a manmade Babylonian religion..They have some aspects of the faith..but it has a twisted manipulative bent to it. I believe the Muslims are a sincere people..but have been schisted..In 2001..a Muslim cleric was saying that 6 million Muslims a year converted to Christianity..missionaries were on their knees praying and Jesus was appearing in dreams to these Muslims and performing miracles and healings.. I have heard that they continue to be Christianized at that rate. praise be to God.. God the Father says that there is no way to Him but through His Son…If you don’t believe..please ask God to show you..He will absolutely show you if you are sincere. God establlshes Himself as the Father God Supreme and He calls Jesus God.the Son..You can see this in Hebrews 1 and in John 1.. There are things you will see that will make you know that He is As for the Muslims thinking that Jesus is equal with the other prophets..no He is not..He is above the angels.. and we are below the angels..If you do not have faith..please ask God for an unshakeable faith..He will give it to you.. And depending how willing and deep you are prepared to go..you will be amazed on a daily basis..

STPPPM Very nice. Rose-Ellen – Death is not an Elephant in the room for her. She understood science quite well, including the first law of thermodynamics – that energy is neither created nor destroyed, hence when you die you don’t turn into nothing, Transmuted though you may be, into your children and children’s children, and the universe around them. Hopefully you don’t have the idea that Science is not spiritual; to the contrary it’s a highly spiritual study.

Sparky – he quoted someone, he didn’t say anything besides that. :)

and btw Rose-Ellen, consider immortality in another way, the DNA running through you is beyond ancient. Another recent finding of a Physicist, Roger Penrose, is the cosmic background radiation displays ripples emanating from before the big bang, he has the proof. This means there was a universe before the big bang. Penrose also states his math shows that before that universe, was another etc. It’s amazing stuff, check him out on wikipedia, his findings shifts the entire science debate now… consider, what makes up your body, the energy, the matter, I don‘t have a word for how old it is because we’re now talking multiples of the age of the universe now – it makes me smile. That life can survive the big bang is beyond spiritual. Anyhow :) Cosmology, logic, spirituality – non of it is mutually exclusive.

That we are made of the elements of the cosmos is irrelevant to the self. if my self dies with my body then i-as a conscious self cease to be and it is that elephant in the room which ayn rand and other athiests find acceptable. One’s own demise [and that of our loved ones] is an abomination and from that abomination religion posits the soul and christianity flows from that .Christianity takes that bull by the horns without equivocation and the cross[ the body that dies] is transfored into the resurrection[eternal life of the self].Onlly that satisfies the human heart.Knowing my dna is ancient and lives on in my descendents is irrelevant to my consciousness of myself.Ayn rand is bringing in the kitchen sink to deflect from the only question that matters-do we have an eternal soul ? Christ takes that question head on and answers it affirmative. hence it is the only good news that speaks directly to our human condition.

Again, the same energy allowing you to say anything about your self is not indestructible. It does not cease to be at death and even she knew that. Besides, she still could not get around, well what she called the Benevolent Universe – if that’s not a higher power, I do not know what is.

What Rand did say was that the question of what happens after death ceases to be relevant as self – qua self. Being qua being, roughly ‘being as being’; its a metaphysical idea, highly logical. Basically it states when you’re not yourself anymore (room temperature, dead, not animated by the soul), thinking ceases to be relevant as thought by the self. Well, that’s nothing but true. Rand was only parroting Aristotle on that point, nothing more. Aristotle’s higher power or God if you will, is the unmoved mover. That’s another fascinating idea but, for another time.

The destruction of being/energy, self turning into nothingness (as opposed to the ending of self as being: self) everything someone is and was becoming nothing? Nope. Rand just didn’t want or look for any explanation of what is beyond death, as it has nothing to do with the living as being. Religion is not necessary to know eternity is mine already (and yours too :).

Annnnd death as an abomination. No. Not even close. It’s called natural, just like birth.

If death was unnatural, it would not exist as all that is natural is already. Btw, I interpret words strictly. Again, you do not need to have religion in order to assure yourself only oblivion awaits at death. Ok, I’ll get a bit sideways on you here too: I’ve seen my own aura. I’ve been confronted by immortality in life. Go ahead and mock and make jokes, I was absolutely sober and I know what I saw. I know we all have a wonderful energy within and about ourselves that embraces us in existence and existence within us. It will never be extinguished, made nothing, etc. Now, those are my own thoughts, not Rand’s obviously, but they are not mutually exclusive either.

Surely you jest..There is all the evidence in the world to support Jesus..The Bible is a history book..It is the living will and testament of Jesus/Yeshua.. The Jews know that He existed..they do not believe that He still exists because they believe that He was a forgery.Islam believes that He was just a prophet but that Mohammad was greater than Him and they have been misled for the purposes of evil men to use them and their loved ones as suicide bombers and ones who are willing to die for the evil men’s causes.. But Jesus was persecuted and tortured and hung on a cross..he was crucified for our sins..and he rose the third day and still lives..sitting at the right hand of His Father God. All of the Prophesies have neared completion in the Bible..If you were to ask..God would give you a hunger for the knowledge and you would see for yourself .Many Muslims are seeking..I have a heart felt love for these people..They are seekers and many of them have been and will be saved..When you are living in the world..it is hard to come to God the Father and His Son Jesus..but if you just say prayer.and ask Him for a way to Him..it will be provided for you..

Studying traditional Judaism compared to Christianity I saw they contradicted one another on many occasions. Trust me! So the world is only 6000 years old and everyone is a descendant of an incestuous family living in a magical garden in the middle of the desert? People live inside of fish and floods wipe out the entire earth except for one family, thus more incest needed to repopulate the world. And if everyone is descended from one pair of people, why are there different races? A history book? Good grief.

Only reason I care is because they have been taking religion out of our culture. Almost every day I read some athiest demanding that we take our crosses down our remove anything religiuos from public. If you dont believe, fine, but dont interfere with my beliefs

Hell will be GOD’s testament to free will! You will choose how you wish to live your life, but you will bow on bended knee before the one true KING and confess before you get to go to hell. Remember God allowed you to choose your path so don’t blame Bush!

people can‘t help what they truly believe or don’t. God knows their hearts and an honest decent athiest will not be condemned for not having the brains/heart to believe. A decent athiest will say yes to Christ in other ways that replace a cognitive assent. Perhaps in his encounter with the least of these-he says yes to Christ. Or immediately on dying he encounters and says yes to Christ. Don’t condemn any one for being an honest athiest. But these billboards are hateful and intolerent. Then again you anti-muslim bigots are no different then these -in your- face -athiests when it comes to denigrading muslims!

The great thing about GOD is he allows us all to believe whatever we want but he is very clear on the rules. We as people can change the rules and the bible all we want to make us feel justified with how we live our lives but in the end when we all kneel before God he is going to judge us by his rules and standards and not our own. God is not a liberal he will hold us all personally accountable for our own lives.

I know our schools are bad (where I live they’re good) I’ve heard but it was hard to understand what you wrote. Do you live in US? You wrote people can‘t help what they believe or don’t….are you kidding? So, if I believe it is okay to break in your house and steal your money or even your house I can‘t help it if I believe it’s mine?

I mean if you are without God, why would you waste your $ on 1200.00 billboards. Why not spend it on stuff that’s fun, since you only get one go ’round? Maybe, it’s a plea for help or just fools needing attention.

They could have been more attractive, don’t you think? I”m in Colorado, by the way. A state that is turning red this election year.

People are responsible for their acts and hence should be held responsible if they break a law or otherwise do bad things. people have free will -in their behavior. people also have a choice to live in faith or not[ but nobody really knows if God exists or if Jesus is God].To choose to procliam oneself an athiest is not a moral choice but a conviction based on ones sincere cognitive workings of a mind. You can’t hold someone morally responsible for what they sincerely believe. I hold people who believe it is all right to waterboard terrorist suspects as holding a morally unethical belief.Doesn’t mean they should be damned by God -they are misguided in their moral belief. Luckily for them the law allows waterboarding so they are not going to get prosecuted for it[or it did till the law changed].Burglary is still illigal hence a person will get arressted for freely choosing to act on his beliefs. Acts are free and ethical/unethical-beliefs are not[everyone believes that their beliefs are moral or they would not believe them.]We’re not responsible for our beliefs-though we can be said to be misguided[out of touch with moral truths].We’re responsible for our acts.Being misguided in ones beliefs is not a sin before God-deliberate going against the truth [the good] is. How many people deliberatly choose to go against the good? perhaps no one.[except the devil].

Man made global warming is imaginary, yet we make laws because of it… just saying

      The real truth,
God created Nature which is a programming language which allowed for the development of the Universe class followed by the Life application. Then, mulitple Lifes were instantiated upon an infinite core server known as Dimensions. Occasionaly God checks out Dimensions for hardware failures and peeks in on the Lifes, checking their Prayer queues and sometimes fulfilling requests, usually when Liberty and Genocide are involved.

The truth is, this reality is an illusion, and God is the ONLY thing that is “real”.

You are composed of particles that aren’t even actually touching each other, but are separated by space. Your body consists mostly of empty space. The universe consists mostly of empty space.

Everything you see or experience is an illusion created by light. The way LUCIFER (the light bearer) deceives you is by making you cling to and please your imaginary flesh as if what you are able to perceive is all that there is. Your flesh is a covering for your intangible soul.

The visible light spectrum is a very narrow band, and even the most advanced technology has no clue what actually “exists” because it is not advanced enough to observe it.

We are like little children in the dark, being guided by Lucifer into utter damnation. Literally.

May the true Morning Star rise in your heart, filling you with light, vanquishing the darkness. May Jesus Christ reside in your heart.

I love my imaginery friend and my imaginery friend loves me. We’re as happy as we can be. Faith casteth out fear and I am not afraid of a silly sign nor do I care (I should but I don’t) what other folks believe. I have wondered though what Madeline OHare thought when she and her children were being murdered out in a lonely desert by her atheist “friend” who was stealing her “atheist” money or how John Lennon who proclaimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ was murdered not too long later and who is still popular to many as an imaginery friend, of course or how many people who proclaim Christianity after finding themselves among the walking dead in prison but would have been solid citizens had they had him as an imaginary friend first and respected others and self. And I even wonder what our current President would have been like if he believed in an imaginary friend. Not mine to reason why. But I wonder. Either way you reap what you sow.

    @all atheists
In the very near future, anywhere from 1-2 billion people will vanish from this earth, (all christians, believers in Christ), the anti-christ will be revealed and sign a seven (7) year peace treaty with Israel which he will break half way through (3 1/2 years), Solomons Temple will be rebuilt in Jerusalem. When the treaty is broken, war will break out all over the earth for the last 3 1/2 years, which equals 7 years. Jesus will return and set His feet on the mount of Olives in Jerusalem and set up His kingdom that will last forever. When you die and are standing before the Great White Throne to be judged by Christ, dont point your fingers at us Christians and say: Why didnt you tell us, we have tried but you refused to listen so your blood will be on your own heads, this is in Ezekiel 3:17-21. I’m telling you this so that just maybe you might remember these words and know that you were told beforehand so that you will know that it is true! When you see all these things happening, remember these words!! May God have mercy on your souls.

    @MODERATIONISBEST

    Hey Mod,

I know this won’t sink in this time, any more than all the other times I have said this, but………..

If your ultimate goal is to somehow convince anyone that your way is the correct way, and that religion, (Christianity specifically), is wrong?

Then you are spinning your wheels, because your form of persuasion is woefully lacking.

Actually though, I’m pretty sure your goal is just to mock, and incite because of some deep seated issues.

If being an atheist means to be like you? I’d rather join up with OWS.

And yes, I did copy & paste this from a previous post.

    What’s good for the goose……..

I am glad you chose to maintain a high moral standard but without God you can maintain any moral standard. How would you explain how the creatures of the earth evolved without intelligent design?

i would like to point out that you are being much more hateful than me by accusing a whole group of people of being hateful. i accuse you of being hateful in the hopes that you will become more tolerant after realizing the accusing tone of your message.
anyone who tries to force their religious beliefs on others is wasting their time and not being productive.
