Going Green Means Seeing Red: Carbon Taxes Will Cost Australian Airline $118-$123 Million

In a bid to offset the financial burden of new carbon tax regulations, Australian airline Qantas announced that it is going to raise the average price of its tickets. The new taxes are a result of Australian prime minister Julia Gillard’s introduction of economic policies that address climate reforms.
According to The Economist, “From next July, 500 of Australia’s biggest polluters will have to start paying a tax of A$23 ($24) a tonne on their own carbon emissions.”
As a result, Qantas believes that the full impact of new taxes will cost them between $118 million and $123 million (110-115 million in Australian dollars) in fiscal 2013.
Despite some revived hopes of Australia becoming a strong player in the efforts against “Global Climate Change” (formerly known as “Global Warming,” formerly known as “Global Cooling”), several business owners are unhappy with the proposed plans.
Regional Express, Australia’s largest independent regional airline, says the proposed price of carbon, on top of an imposing number of government regulations, will “decimate” air services.
Regional Express chief operating officer Chris Hine said pricing carbon, removing some rebates for regional airlines, an increased fuel excise and additional security measures would cost the airline about $6 million per year.
“I foresee many regional operators without the financial strength and diversification of the Rex Group being forced out of business once these take effect after 1 July 2012,” said Hine.
Additionally, Hine said some regional centers would lose essential flights and called on the federal government to reconsider its treatment of regional air services.
“Given the extremely fragile state of regional aviation in Australia today, once an operator goes out of business it could become irreversible as the returns are too slim and uncertain to attract new entrants,” Said Hine.
Along with being forced to pay millions in new taxes, Qantas is also suffering from falling stocks. Shares fell 3.25 per cent to $1.94 (a 1.54 per cent decline in the benchmark index).

So what, the climate around Australia will stay regulated while the climate over India and China heat up? Like hot lamps warming up Chinese food at Panda Express?
OR, maybe the taxes will just go into the general fund to go toward Australia’s poor to improve their living conditions in exchange for the pollution spewed out by the big bad rich people (the only people left who can afford to fly).

The best government services serve the user or lubricate commerce by providing order, security or protection of property. This carbon tax does none of the above. This carbon tax is exporting an alleged and unproven benefit to the world. Even if it felt cooler already there is no proof that the costs are less than the benefits. Even if there was a provable benefit, Australia has no chance to save the world by its tiny contribution. Their justification is that Climate Change is PROBABLY right, so we must do it. This is like being forced to buy a lottery ticket and letting Bernie Madoff hold it for you.

This measure in Australia is not supported by 60 percent of the people but they are doing it regardless. The PM there has declining popularity and needed to shove it through ASAP. This is all building up to the ultimate sell-out of Western interests in the next Global Warming/Climate Change meeting. Get ready for rolling black outs! But while you are freezing from a lack of natural gas and electricity and starving from a lack of food as transportation costs go through the roof along with diesel for farmers equipment, you can rest assured that the Chinese, Indians and Russians will more than double their output of CO2.

The EPA regulations regarding green house gasses have all ready caused AEP, one of the largest US electricity creators to shut down four large coal plants. Other EPA regulations have stopped coal mining and through movies like Gasland the narrative is being set in the media to crack down on fracking. The American public will yawn and turn the channel to American Idol or Housewives of New Jersey and get angry at the gas and electric companies for the rising rates. Meanwhile the Chinese are scrambling around the world to secure access to any and all energy deposits because they can see the writing on the wall.
What does Congress do about this usurpation of their power??? Nothing, the RINOS parrot the tired “I am for an everything energy policy, oil, gas, wind, sun and clean coal.” What a joke, they have become completely irrelevant. Look at the realignment of lobbying by the energy industry from congress to the executive branch to see that in this matter Congress no longer matters. Same goes for telcom and net neutrality. They lobbied Congress, but after Congress and the courts proved ineffective switched to the Executive branch. You will see the same with gunrunner/fast and furious, Holder probably will never even go in front of Congress, he will just ignore them, after all what will they do?

I have no problem being ‘green’, but when the objective is no longer conservation or clean air/water/land etc.., but government control, then it has lost it’s appeal.
