Golden Globes: Ricky Gervais & Actress Meryl Streep Crack ‘God’ Jokes During Awards Show

Ricky Gervais & Actress Meryl Streep Crack God Jokes During Awards Show

Ricky Gervias' controversial Sept./Oct. cover of New Humanist magazine

In Hollywood, it’s often common practice for winners at award shows to thank God for their victories. Of course, this gesture takes on different forms, with the actual meaning behind the words completely dependent upon the person uttering them.

During last night’s Golden Globes award show, controversial host and self-described atheist Ricky Gervais addressed this theme, while cracking a joke about God’s — and his agent’s — impact on his career.

Gervais also addressed overly-long thank you speeches — another common component of award shows. The comedian urged winners to limit their list of people they’d like to thank and, in gest, he encouraged them to simply shower praise upon God and their agents.

“You don‘t need to thank everyone you’ve ever met…just do the main two, your agent and God,” he said. ”God and my agent had exactly the same amount of input into my career.”

Considering that he’s an atheist, Gervais was clearly cracking a joke here about the limited impact these parties have had on his successes.

Watch him make this wisecrack, below:

In 2011, Gervais was seen as “too harsh” and polarizing by many critics when he previously hosted the Golden Globes. This year, he was widely seen as having tempered himself. At the end of the 2011 show, he thanked God for his atheism (which, as can be imagined, created quite a bit of controversy last year):

During last night’s show, Meryl Streep also got in on the thank-you-speech joke. The famed actress stunned audiences when she, as Gervais had instructed, thanked her agent and “God” for her award. The only problem? The “God” she was referring to was director Harvey Weinstein (co-founder of Miramax Films).

Watch Streep’s speech, below:

Ricky and Meryl, thank God Almighty that He gave you free will to make fools of yourself in public. Fact is, all you Hollywood elite, the biggest joke is on YOU: make light of our Creator now, pay in tears and sorrow later… and for all eternity. (BTW, I’ll be spending no more of my hard-earned dollars on Ms. Streep’s movies.)

People who believe in science and reason rather than a myth/religion they were inculcated into have the right to express their POV. What is disturbing is the fact that it upsets Glenn Beck and people who believe religious narratives.

Mediocre talent combined with the street smarts to be a vocal atheist has catapulted this aging, UK comedian into the “inner circle” where he can attend the swankest, cocaine ridden parties in Hollywood and then jet out to the East Coast for cocktails in the Hamptons. Wow! Hosting the Golden Globes with “stars” like Meryl Streep! Wonderful! Looks like Ricky won’t be stuck hosting the Welsh BAFTAs any more!

Seems like being anti-god is all the rage, however it just goes to show how people are like sheep. Being a body without a soul is an empty existence. The thought that there is no higher power than us mere mortals is not only foolish but self loathing. Faith in all its forms is the most powerful and humbling experience.

The intent of most all these Hollywood denigration of religion is aimed strictly at Christianity.

I’m wondering if they are bright enough to understand that the god they are denigrating and ridiculing is the same god of the Muslim jihadists?

“Comedians say things that make people uncomfortable , Ricky does that well . If you’re offended by something he said , that’s YOUR personal CHOICE to be so.”
      ——————————————————————————-
Not all comedy is about making one uncomfortable. While comedy may be stated so as to provoke thought (Charlie Chaplin in the Great Dictator), I can certainly think of a great many superior comedians who seek to inspire and entertain without seeking to make their audiences uncomfortable.
I agree that to be offended (or how someone reacts to being offended) is ultimately up to the individual, but if a comedian’s focus is to make his/her audience uncomfortable, I think that comedian shares a little blame for causing members of that audience to feel offended. For example, I’m an atheist; however, my estimate of Mr. Gervais diminishes because I am offended by his desire to mock the beliefs of others. It’s my choice, but he had a hand in my making that choice.

Really tired of hearing the lame response, “Well just don’t watch or listen, then”. So, if someone takes a crap all over the Mona Lisa and ruins it, we should just stop going to the museum and have them wonder why we’ve stopped coming? Or should we let someone know, “Hey, these losers are defacing something we once enjoyed.” Americans do not remain silent. We don’t lie down or go quietly. We voice our opinions and we communicate our differences LOUDLY. That‘s how we roll here and that’s how we change things. And hey, if that offends you…well, you can just not read our comments. :)

Anyway At the end they say how they love American “kickball” and then (r)icky throws a football at the the head of their victim, I mean “friend” and he just so happens to be wearing a Denver Broncos helmet. Coincidence? Not a snowballs chance in hell, It is clearly a hit on Tebow. (r)icky IS a sack steaming dog-poo!

I no doubt he doesn’t even watch “kickball”. Therefore I also believe he has gone completely out of his way to denigrate Tebow. Why do these people open their mouths about things which they have no clue about? That’s easy, because they are pure evil and have narcissistic personality disorder. On the surface they think that people really care what they have to say. They know they must say things that are shocking to get attention because deep down inside they suffer from low self esteem and know that no one really cares. (Good lord that’s wordy!)

KITKAR . . .Cold down below? I don’t believe hell exists, but those who do differ on its temperature:

In many religious cultures, including Christianity and Islam, Hell is traditionally depicted as fiery and painful, inflicting guilt and suffering. Despite these common depictions of Hell as a place of fire, some other traditions portray Hell as cold. Buddhist – and particularly Tibetan Buddhist – descriptions of hell feature an equal number of hot and cold hells. Among Christian descriptions Dante’s Inferno portrays the innermost (9th) circle of Hell as a frozen lake of blood and guilt. But cold also played a part in earlier Christian depictions of hell, beginning with the Apocalypse of Paul, originally from the early third century; the “Vision of Dryhthelm” by the Venerable Bede from the seventh century; “St Patrick’s Purgatory”, “The Vision of Tundale” or “Visio Tnugdali”, and the “Vision of the Monk of Enysham”, all from the twelfth century; and the “Vision of Thurkill” from the early thirteenth century. Well, for those of you who won’t watch M.S. anymore, perhaps I should go ahead and give you a heads up on the rest of who in Hollywood don’t care for your god.

      Woody Allen
      George Clooney
      Jodie Foster
      Morgan Freeman
      Angelina Jolie
      Bruce Lee
      Steve Martin
      Sir Ian McKellen
      Brad Pitt
      Jack Nicholson
      Natalie Portman
      Ray Romano
      Daniel Radcliffe
      Meryl Streep
      William Shatner
      James Cameron
      Hugh Laurie
      Bruce Willis
      John Malkovich
      Gene Wilder
      Emma Thompson
      Dame Helen Mirren

In fact, why don’t you just stop watching television. You wouldn‘t want to accidentally acknowledge someone who doesn’t think exactly like you.

OK, You had to add Tebow, so I have an obsevation.

43% of Americans said in a survey just before Tebow’s last game that they believed that GOD was watching and had an assist on that overtime winning play.

Before the New England Patriots game a coven of Witches put a blessing on the New England team. And according to some sources a little hex on Tim.

      Final Score = Witches 45, God 10

Will this mean 43% of Americans believe witches defeated the Broncos? I hope not because that is just trading one silly superstition for another.

Being an atheist means you don’t accept either explanation and Allah was out of the game too.

You are all atheists, it’s just a matter of degree. You don‘t believe in Zeus or Allah or even the Mormon’s Moroni, you just have one more step and you are out of there and delusion free.

You are correct, there is no “triune God” in Mormon Theology, but there are three separate and distinct Holy Beings , God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. These three comprise the Godhead, one in purpose, separate in being.

I find that definition and perspective far more comprehensible and understandable than the Nicene Creed version, don’t you?

Mr. Beck is finally a trend setter.

The writers of the Golden Globes wrote some lines mocking God on last night’s broadcast.

Mr. Beck has been mocking God for at least as long as his current radio program has been on the air.

Mr. Beck is always quick to point out how he is ahead of the curve talking about issues that no one else is talking about (even though the facts he distorts come directly from those he criticizes.)

Now Mr. Beck has evidence to support his claim of being ahead of the curve. The Golden Globes mocked God last night; something The Glenn Beck Radio Show and Mercury Radio Arts has been doing for years.

Remember, if any of these people truly were athiests, and felt it all the way down to their core, they would not feel the need to poke fun at our religion, and us. Their jokes reveal a deep-seated insecurity and uncertainty. Let them make fun of us. Do not return the hatred. That is how Jesus directed us to respond, show only love back. I fail at this all the time, lest anyone think I am preaching.

Atheists have “deep-seated insecurity and uncertainty”. Really. Because they are willing to live with the responsibility of their actions? Some say Christians can’t handle that responsibility, so they invent the Guy in the Sky to tells them, “That’s OK. I know you continually cheat on your wife and beat your kids, but I’ll overlook that stuff cuz you act like you hear me in the night.”

Seems to me the Christians are the insecure ones.

Believing in the non-existence of god, does indeed make him not exist. Unfortunately, it does not make his followers not exist. I don’t believe in the theoretical subatomic particle which acts as a force carrier for the force of gravity, the graviton, either, but it’s fun to speculate about it. I don’t believe in magick or wizards, but I can still discuss Harry Potter with the best of them.

Talking about a thing, as if it existed, or positting the implications of an affirmed existence, in no way belies one’s claim to a principled conviction in its non-existence. That honor is reserved for Christics talking about the Big Bang and Evolution.

Sensei, God is not an “invention”. He is a revealed Creator. The only invention here is your invented reaction to the witness and testimony of those who recorded the revelations. You can run from the evidence of His Creation, by putting your faith and trust in the interpretations of men, but in so doing you build upon a flimsy foundation. For instance, the atheistic evolutionists seem to ignore the vast amount of contrary evidence abundantly found in nature, that there was intelligent design in everything.

Not the smallest parasite could possibly have been brought about by the process described by evolutionary scientists, it is far too complex, there is not sufficient time in the universe, and there is no possibility that any process called natural selection could have put together the information necessary to do so without a vastly superior intelligence than exists today or at any time in earth’s history.

Abraham, just because YOU don‘t understand the theory of evolution doesn’t make your case strong. Just because YOU take the words of psuedo-scientists and their “evidence” [founded upon their lack of understanding] doesn’t automatically make a [magical] “intelligent design” account feasible. Nature DOES speak, . . . but is stays something that the Bible doesn’t. In stand in stark contradiction to the Bible.

Even if we accepted the argument of “intelligent design” [which the vaste majority of actual scientists don't], then you STILL have no case when determining WHICH god did it. You only go by the religion you have attached yourself to. But “faith” is useless in factual investigation. It may seem harsh, but that is reality.

Your Sensei…love your posts. Times change; most people that comment here don‘t or won’t recognize that fact.
On God: There are all kinds of bad/evil things that happen in peoples’ lives. We would have to assume that and “all good” deity (regardless of name) would be able to prevent these things from happening but chooses not to. Then is “God” all-good? I tend to think not. Let’s move on to the concept of “all-powerful”…Let’s assume that “God” CANNOT prevent the bad/evil things that happen in one’s lifetime. In that case “God” is hardly all-powerful. So…what’s the point of having a “God” who is neither all-good nor all-powerful. I haven’t even taken the conundrum of how “God” can possibly be all-knowing…not bloody likely. It’s truly sad that so many Americans have so little to cling to beyond the belief of some abstract deity that will save their dying souls…amazing!

As for your pocket psychology, I suggest you focus on more meaningful possibilities. Here’s one. Hannity said the audience share for the famous 316 game was 31.6. Here’s the conundrum you need to consider. Why did Hannity say this when the 31.6 number was deconstructed from a partial stat that included only the 4th quarter and part of the 3rd quarter?

Obviously that is your own choice. But before you mock/dismiss someone’s view point, you should know there are very good reasons for doing so. We no longer have cable in our home, because it is just too difficult to keep all the propaganda out. We have two small children and would much rather questions concerning faith, politics, and our planet be answered by us than by some progressive tv personality. Neither do we spend money on movies anymore. We are very careful what we watch, because we don’t want our hard earned cash furthering the Hollywood agenda. It is a pain. There are many movies that look awesome, but has some actor who has come out and spewed some tasteless garbage about how stupid our faith or our politics is. We have chosen to make a stand in our home. Not for everyone in Hollywood to know (they don’t care), but as an example for our children.

I didn’t see Star Wars till 15 years after it came out. And even then it was a hash of shallow tired ideas couched in a comic book morality play. Moviegoers have been conditioned to expect a steadily lowering grade of material for a long time now. The “Rolling Stone Raves” type of movie today is a computer generated half a$$ effort designed to dazzle the eyes but is severely lacking in talented writers, actors and sets built in real time with material other than a cheap computer program. So when Robert Ryan threw a punch, you knew it connected. When George Clooney pretends to fight, you know he’s pretending. When Meryl Streep is acting, it’s obvious. When some show their ignorance on national TV, their ignorance becomes them and precedes them to their next overhyped unnecessity.
