Golden Globes: Ricky Gervais & Actress Meryl Streep Crack ‘God’ Jokes During Awards Show

In Hollywood, it’s often common practice for winners at award shows to thank God for their victories. Of course, this gesture takes on different forms, with the actual meaning behind the words completely dependent upon the person uttering them.
During last night’s Golden Globes award show, controversial host and self-described atheist Ricky Gervais addressed this theme, while cracking a joke about God’s — and his agent’s — impact on his career.
Gervais also addressed overly-long thank you speeches — another common component of award shows. The comedian urged winners to limit their list of people they’d like to thank and, in gest, he encouraged them to simply shower praise upon God and their agents.
“You don‘t need to thank everyone you’ve ever met…just do the main two, your agent and God,” he said. ”God and my agent had exactly the same amount of input into my career.”
Considering that he’s an atheist, Gervais was clearly cracking a joke here about the limited impact these parties have had on his successes.

In 2011, Gervais was seen as “too harsh” and polarizing by many critics when he previously hosted the Golden Globes. This year, he was widely seen as having tempered himself. At the end of the 2011 show, he thanked God for his atheism (which, as can be imagined, created quite a bit of controversy last year):
During last night’s show, Meryl Streep also got in on the thank-you-speech joke. The famed actress stunned audiences when she, as Gervais had instructed, thanked her agent and “God” for her award. The only problem? The “God” she was referring to was director Harvey Weinstein (co-founder of Miramax Films).

The intent of most all these Hollywood denigration of religion is aimed strictly at Christianity.
I’m wondering if they are bright enough to understand that the god they are denigrating and ridiculing is the same god of the Muslim jihadists?
If they keep it up, I‘m pretty sure we’re going to eventually read of one of them getting beheaded for his blasphemy by a rabid Muslim.

Not all comedy is about making one uncomfortable. While comedy may be stated so as to provoke thought (Charlie Chaplin in the Great Dictator), I can certainly think of a great many superior comedians who seek to inspire and entertain without seeking to make their audiences uncomfortable.
I agree that to be offended (or how someone reacts to being offended) is ultimately up to the individual, but if a comedian’s focus is to make his/her audience uncomfortable, I think that comedian shares a little blame for causing members of that audience to feel offended. For example, I’m an atheist; however, my estimate of Mr. Gervais diminishes because I am offended by his desire to mock the beliefs of others. It’s my choice, but he had a hand in my making that choice.

I find that definition and perspective far more comprehensible and understandable than the Nicene Creed version, don’t you?

The writers of the Golden Globes wrote some lines mocking God on last night’s broadcast.
Mr. Beck has been mocking God for at least as long as his current radio program has been on the air.
Mr. Beck is always quick to point out how he is ahead of the curve talking about issues that no one else is talking about (even though the facts he distorts come directly from those he criticizes.)
Now Mr. Beck has evidence to support his claim of being ahead of the curve. The Golden Globes mocked God last night; something The Glenn Beck Radio Show and Mercury Radio Arts has been doing for years.

Talking about a thing, as if it existed, or positting the implications of an affirmed existence, in no way belies one’s claim to a principled conviction in its non-existence. That honor is reserved for Christics talking about the Big Bang and Evolution.

The only invention here is your invented reaction to the witness and testimony of those who recorded the revelations. You can run from the evidence of His Creation, by putting your faith and trust in the interpretations of men, but in so doing you build upon a flimsy foundation. For instance, the atheistic evolutionists seem to ignore the vast amount of contrary evidence abundantly found in nature, that there was intelligent design in everything.
Not the smallest parasite could possibly have been brought about by the process described by evolutionary scientists, it is far too complex, there is not sufficient time in the universe, and there is no possibility that any process called natural selection could have put together the information necessary to do so without a vastly superior intelligence than exists today or at any time in earth’s history.

Just because YOU take the words of psuedo-scientists and their “evidence” [founded upon their lack of understanding] doesn’t automatically make a [magical] “intelligent design” account feasible. Nature DOES speak, . . . but is stays something that the Bible doesn’t. In stand in stark contradiction to the Bible.
Even if we accepted the argument of “intelligent design” [which the vaste majority of actual scientists don't], then you STILL have no case when determining WHICH god did it. You only go by the religion you have attached yourself to. But “faith” is useless in factual investigation. It may seem harsh, but that is reality.

Report Post »On God: There are all kinds of bad/evil things that happen in peoples’ lives. We would have to assume that and “all good” deity (regardless of name) would be able to prevent these things from happening but chooses not to. Then is “God” all-good? I tend to think not. Let’s move on to the concept of “all-powerful”…Let’s assume that “God” CANNOT prevent the bad/evil things that happen in one’s lifetime. In that case “God” is hardly all-powerful. So…what’s the point of having a “God” who is neither all-good nor all-powerful. I haven’t even taken the conundrum of how “God” can possibly be all-knowing…not bloody likely. It’s truly sad that so many Americans have so little to cling to beyond the belief of some abstract deity that will save their dying souls…amazing!

Here’s the conundrum you need to consider. Why did Hannity say this when the 31.6 number was deconstructed from a partial stat that included only the 4th quarter and part of the 3rd quarter?
Why would anyone feel they needed to amend God’s work in such an arbitrary and reprehensible way?

We no longer have cable in our home, because it is just too difficult to keep all the propaganda out. We have two small children and would much rather questions concerning faith, politics, and our planet be answered by us than by some progressive tv personality. Neither do we spend money on movies anymore. We are very careful what we watch, because we don’t want our hard earned cash furthering the Hollywood agenda. It is a pain. There are many movies that look awesome, but has some actor who has come out and spewed some tasteless garbage about how stupid our faith or our politics is. We have chosen to make a stand in our home. Not for everyone in Hollywood to know (they don’t care), but as an example for our children.

Moviegoers have been conditioned to expect a steadily lowering grade of material for a long time now. The “Rolling Stone Raves” type of movie today is a computer generated half a$$ effort designed to dazzle the eyes but is severely lacking in talented writers, actors and sets built in real time with material other than a cheap computer program. So when Robert Ryan threw a punch, you knew it connected. When George Clooney pretends to fight, you know he’s pretending. When Meryl Streep is acting, it’s obvious. When some show their ignorance on national TV, their ignorance becomes them and precedes them to their next overhyped unnecessity.
