Google Launches ‘People Finder’ to aid Japan Quake Victims

Google has launched an international message board in order to help friends and family locate their loved ones in Japan. According to Busines Insider, 88,000 people are currently missing.

The free service, called Person Finder: 2011 Japan Earthquake, allows people to either post updates about themselves or search for information already posted about someone else:

Never let a good crisis go to waste. You gotta believe this was waiting in the wings to launch at the opportune moment.

Never let a crisis go to waste. While it might seem like fantastic idea on face value, I’m sure none of the data will be erased at a later date.

If this is too much for you Blazers, then you probably shouldn’t be using the Internet…or going outside ever–do you know how many cameras in public places capture images of you everyday? Did you know that websites save “cookies” which are little information packets about your user information and browsing history?

Google is only concerned with keeping track of as many people as possible during a time like this.

I just noticed that “Google” is an actual word that spell check recognizes.

Ok. This is definitely a big brother type thing, but it is helping people find their families.

Think of it this way: your unconscious, at a hospital, with ID, but no phone or email info. They could upload the info so your family can find you. I mean, you cant stop what someone else posts about you…

I wouldn’t be surprised if they did start using it. I’d recommend everyone look up Veri-Chip because sooner or later everyone will be forced to have one.

There’s nothing sinister about this. It’s just a bbs with a database. Either the name is there or it ain’t. No GPS tracking or any of that crap.

It doesn’t reveal anything. Did you notice that users enter the information, meaning that you can use it if you want to. People voluntarily put information into the site, just like any other website like Facebook. What it does reveal, however, is that you are paranoid and will believe anything Glenn Beck says.

That is scary – they had to have already had it developed in order to get it up so fast. Wonder what it was really planned for!! http://wp.me/pYLB7-Jm

At least in Japan, families tend to take care of their own, especially the elderly, since they do hold great respect for them. So hopefully the old and the feeble are safe as possible.

i believe Google started this project as a response to 9/11/2001
it is a two edged sword.
my family is spread around greater Cincinnati and in a disaster this would be useful; but disturbing.

OK, nuclear power plants are out, phone lines are cut. How exactly are people supposed to post they are OK? By the time they get power and phones fixed, they could call. Oh well, I hope it helps.

Wonder how long they’ve been working on this one. Good to see it’s being used for something worthwhile, but I wonder if it will really work. I’d guess a lot of communications infrastructure has been destroyed, so getting access to the must be spotty at best.

That was how I found my cousin in Katrina. I put into the system that I was looking for Betty, and someone who knew her saw it and contacted me. Betty’s husband was a musician, and they were not even in Mississippi. Their home in Gulfport had minimal damage.

The photo of the eyeball with “Google” imprinted on it somehow makes my skin crawl. Time to defang google and walk away from it while we can. There are other search engines out there that are patriot-friendly……and ultimately may be far more user-safe.
