Google Pulls ‘Crud’ Gmail App for iPhone: ‘Sorry We Messed Up’

On Tuesday, we reported that iPhone would finally be getting a native app for Gmail, not run through a third party. Shortly thereafter, the app was released. And within hours, it was removed.

Why? This app was supposed to make viewing Gmail on iPhone, iPads and iPod touches a smoother experience, compared to other methods. It was a much anticipated app for iPhone users.

CNN reported Google Product Manager Matthew Izatt as touting the importance of a high-functioning Gmail app to help us get back to our daily lives — or playing Angry Birds. Blogger Robert Scoble excitedly wrote “Go get the iPhone app for Gmail!” on his Google+ page, then, only a few minutes later according to CNN, he wrote “DO NOT” and called the app “really a piece of crud.”

Google iPhone App Released, Then Pulled Back for Bugs

Google Tweet after removing the app from the app store.

Yesterday, Google responded with an update on its blog stating:

Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.

Once the new, bug-free app is released, Google promises it to have time-saving features, organization to help make for an efficient Gmail experience and an optimized touch system.
