GOP Debate: Perry Can’t Remember Name of Government Agency He Would Eliminate as President

Once considered a front-runner in the GOP presidential race, Texas Governor Rick Perry has suffered some less-than-flattering moments in front of the camera in the past and during Wednesday night’s CNBC presidential debate was no exception.
In response to a question from Caterpillar CEO Douglas R. Oberhelman, Perry tried fruitlessly to name all three government agencies he would eliminate if elected president.
“It’s three agencies of government when I get there that are gone – Commerce, Education and the um, what’s the third one there? Let’s see. Oh five – Commerce, Education and the um, um,” Perry faltered.
Mitt Romney tried to help by offering, “EPA?”
But that answer apparently didn’t satisfy Perry, who tried again.
“The third agency I would do away with…the…ahh…Education…ahh…Commerce, and, let’s see. I can’t…the third one. I can’t. Sorry. Oops.”
Some 15 minutes or so later, the elusive name finally came to Perry: The Department of Energy.
Addressing reporters directly after the debate, Perry said, ”I’m glad I had my boots on tonight. I stepped in it out there.”
He added, “I may have forgotten Energy, but I haven’t forgotten my conservative principles.”
When asked whether his blunder was embarrassing, Perry replied, “I stepped in it, man. Yeah, it was embarrassing. Of course it was.”

Regardless of his performance, Perry told reporters that he still plans to be in South Carolina on Saturday.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 8:12amI suspect the vast majority of the fair-minded feel bad for Perry. Heck, it sounded as those on the stage were trying to help him out of his dilemma as it was unfolding. However, I just can’t imagine the ridicule that the John Stewarts, SNLs, and Bill Mahrs of the world will heap on Mr. Perry, and what fodder this gives for future Democratic commercials. I can see future ads depicting him as the President in the midst of a crisis that calls for an immediate decision, then replaying the “uh, uh, uh…” stuff. I’m afraid these 53 seconds are going to be the downfall of this Presidential bid.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 1:24pmAll these criticisms from Perry’s detractors are hypocritical to the extreme. If you are human, you have done the same thing, and will do it in the future. The only persons not susceptible to this human weakness, according to Press are Obama, the Democrats and themselves. I admit I am human and made of flesh and blood, and have done this many times in the past, and will do likewise. And any person who denies it doesn’t happen to them, is either a liar, or an idiot. On Oct 15, 2007 in a debate between Senator McCain and Barack Obama, Bob Schieffer asked which programs the candidates would cut if elected. Obama talked and talked without naming a single department. He was asked again by an impatient Schieffer, who was again given the same run around. Obama can’t give a speech without a teleprompter. All this feigned scorn by liberals only proves they are the frauds we know they are.

I‘m a CAIN supporter and I don’t like it that someone who now works for PERRY may be the leak to Politico..but all that is water under the bridge now..HERMAN answered all and the TWO (not five) women were totally discredited, one (the last one) who’d never said anything was probably an AXELROD pile on; the one who did has sued other employers for harassment..both were disgusting and had such checkered pasts. Giving another avenue to steal from us is the LAST thing we can withstand. Aside from supporting keynesian economics (Which worsened the great depression and caused the mess we’re in!!!), Cain also supports the Federal Reserve System!

Mark my words.
The blame for a failed Republican run will lie with the GOP Establishment and its own Progressive agenda. Without us loyal Conservatives the GOP would be the Old Democratic Party of your grand daddy. Our modern Democratic Party is in actuality more in line with Communism, and thus, is in reality just a front for the Socialist Party. You know what I mean?

I can not bring myself to vote for more of the same, if Ron Paul does not win this Country is doomed anyways, he has a plan to have us out of debt in the first 3 years of his presidency , Romney will just be the same, big government same socialist programs and so on, same with Cain.

From her complaining about hard hitting “gotcha” questions like “What newspapers do you read?” to claiming you can see Russia from Alaska, which barring two tiny islands (the Diomedes, which i’m certain she was not referring to) in the middle of the bering strait is impossible, she solidified her reputation as a mental midget. The so called MSM or liberal media didnt have to work too hard to make her look bad.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 4:14amThere seems to be almost a collusion on here between the Paul supporters and the huffpo guerrillas. One thing needs to be foremost on Ron Paul. He is convinced that the US is doing no more than picking on Iran. He thinks that they are pursuing nothing more than nuclear power. Th report today should persuade you people that Iran has the mindset that they should be the conquerors of the world. To believe otherwise is nonsense. And though the major issue for this election is the economy, national security is of the utmost importance. Paul would fail on that as much as Obama has. Are we going to retain the status quo? Because that’s what you get with Romney. For some reason you blueblood repubs have it in your mind that it is his turn. There are no “turns”. Don’t you get it. Ask Dole, McCain. This country wanted change last election so they voted an idiot into the most powerful position in the world. A lifelong politician. Why is everyone so afraid of putting a businessman in the Whitehouse? We can’t keep making the same mistakes over and over. I believe the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. We’re going to have to break the mold to save the greatest nation in the world. For those of you from the huffpo here, you are no better than the fringe at the OWS, most of whom don’t have a clue what they are protesting. You can’t give the unions a pass, The unions are the majority of this economic crisis.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 12:38pmRifRadio,
I think you have Paul wrong, He is strong on National defense. He just does not believe we need to be in conflicts all over the world. By stretching our military so thin across the world, it makes us more vulnerable. We are definately not weak when it comes to nuclear detterents. We could put subs at strategic locations around the world and strike within minutes if we had to. I say bring the troops home and shore up our borders as that is where our true vulnerability is. Noone is going to attack us with troops on our soil, they will sneak in and attack us from within. Iran does not even have the technology to make its own gas with all the oil they have. How is it they are a threat to us? Isreal is armed enough to take them on if they get close to nuclear weapons and we need to just stay out of their decisions on that. We can support Isreal by letting them know we stand by their decisions when it comes to their country’s defense. It seems to me that a lot of people look at Ron Paul through the eyes of the media, who is usually wrong about what they say about Paul, when they actually say anything about him at all. I think the media is scared of Paul. Cain is just that, a businessman. He will have to get all his ideas from others, and his tax plan is bad for the country in my opinion.

I think Bachmann needs to get visually pissed off during one of her answers to inject some greater level of passion with her message. Newt has a way of injecting his disgust purely with his indignant facial expressions – it’s a beautiful thing IMO.

Posted on November 9, 2011 at 11:18pmI supported Bachmann a LOT in the beginning and I felt bad when they called looking for donations to her campaign, but I explained that at the time (I was supporting Perry which only lasted very briefly after I then found out his reckless views on the border fencing and then the whole in state tuition nonsense, I dropped him like a rock.) Bachmann’s campaign called again and I said I was sorry, all my support is behind Cain, they thanked me and thanked that while I wasn’t supporting her, that I was supporting a Conservative Candidate.
I joking said… at this point, I’d vote for a volleyball with a smiley face painted on it over Obama, but it really comes down to who‘s for real and who’s just saying what they have to say. Romney is too beltway RINO for me, if we got stuck with him after the primary, I will support him, any GOP candidate over Obama is better, but right now it boils down to Cain, Gingrich (who would make a better VP) and I would love to see Paul put as a cabinet member to oversee the Fed, I think he’d relish his full attention on that and it would truly rattle some cages that have long needed a good shake out. Perry is toast in my view. Bachmann just doesn‘t have what it’ll take, she’s a wonderful person, but she’s not a strong enough candidate.

Posted on November 10, 2011 at 10:21amNewt is without a doubt the smartest one in the room. HOWEVER, he has some serious “Big Government Tendencies”. For example, he wants to re-name the EPA. Why? Just end it. If you leave it there, the next Marxist administration will just crank it back up again. Take it out by the roots and make the Marxists start from scratch. He wants to turn the 99 weeks of unemployment compensation into a jobs training program. That‘s not the governments’ job. You need to listen to Newt very carefully. He’s not SMALL GOVERNMENT like Bachmann, Paul or Santorum. i think he honestly believes there is such a thing as EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT. But efficient government doesn‘t tell us what it’s efficient at. That is a two edged sword. i lived in Newt’s district when he was Speaker. i worked in his campaign headquarters when they first won Congress in 1994. i’ve marched in his parades and rallies back then. The years of being in Washington have taken a bit of a toll. Regardless, if nominated, i WILL vote for him.
