GOP Gov. Haley Barbour Responds to Charges of Racism

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a potential Republican presidential candidate, said Tuesday he was not trying to downplay the pain that many endured during the South‘s segregation era when he defended his home town’s 1970 public school integration process.

Barbour spoke out a day after several liberal activists criticized his published comments about school desegregation in Yazoo City, which occurred when he was 20. Historical accounts confirm the schools integrated peacefully, as Barbour stated in a recent profile in the Weekly Standard magazine.

Some critics, however, said his comments skimmed over the segregationist role played by so-called Citizens Councils in the state.

Asked by the magazine why Yazoo City’s public school integration avoided the violence seen in other towns, Barbour said: “Because the business community wouldn’t stand for it. You heard of the Citizens Councils? Up north they think it was like the KKK. Where I come from it was an organization of town leaders. In Yazoo City they passed a resolution that said anybody who started a chapter of the Klan would get their ass run out of town.”

A January 1970 Time Magazine article about Yazoo City said, “local white leaders began more than a month ago to prepare their city for the shock of final desegregation. A loosely knit committee of prominent whites met with the city’s whites, urging them to support the public schools rather than abandon them.”

Several liberal bloggers Monday said Barbour left an inaccurate impression of Mississippi’s local Citizens Councils, which sought to thwart integration in many areas. The white supremacist groups had their chief influence in the 1950s and early 1960s, years before the Yazoo City schools integration.

Barbour said in a statement Tuesday: “When asked why my hometown in Mississippi did not suffer the same racial violence when I was a young man that accompanied other towns’ integration efforts, I accurately said the community leadership wouldn’t tolerate it and helped prevent violence there. My point was my town rejected the Ku Klux Klan, but nobody should construe that to mean I think the town leadership were saints, either. Their vehicle, called the ‘Citizens Council,’ is totally indefensible, as is segregation. It was a difficult and painful era for Mississippi, the rest of the country, and especially African Americans who were persecuted in that time.”

In the Weekly Standard profile, Barbour said he remembered Martin Luther King Jr. speaking in Yazoo City in 1962, when he would have been 12 years old. He said he did not recall King’s words.

“The truth is, we couldn’t hear very well,” Barbour said. “We were sort of out there on the periphery. We just sat on our cars, watching the girls, talking, doing what boys do. We paid more attention to the girls than to King.”

A quick data base search found records of King speaking in Yazoo City in 1966, when Barbour would have been 16, but not in 1962.

“Gov. Barbour did not comment on the Citizens Council movement’s history,” Barbour spokesman Dan Turner told TPM yesterday. “He commented on the business community in Yazoo City, Mississippi.”

Hollywood and the liberal mass media have dragged Mississippi through the mud for decades. It is amazing the perception our country has of it and its citizens. Just like all the other lies told by the progressives, most are not true. Yes, there is poverty, but there is poverty all over the U. S. Not everyone in Mississippi is ignorant and barefoot. In fact, most of the people I knew growing up there were better educated and spoke grammatically correct English better than most here in the New England/mid-Atlantic states. I’ve been down more dirt roads in this area than I ever travelled on in Mississippi. Wake up, America! You haven’t been told the truth about a whole lot of things. I don’t know much about Haley Barbour. I do know my sister who still lives in Mississippi does not like him, so before we give him a favorable vote for a run for office, I think he needs to prove he isn’t just another RINO. As far as being a racist, I’m sick of that card being played. It is a broken record and has lost its effectiveness. Most Americans want to move on to a time when we can judge a person by his principles. Racist liberals who have nothing more of merit to offer are stuck on these rantings.

I don’t get this! Barbour was only 20 when all this was going on. He was not a community leader at the time and had no vioce on the matter. If he doesn’t know the exact history or mispeaks about what he believed the situation to be at the time then that is completely excusable. Just get the facts correct before commenting on them since it is a highly charged subject even to speak about today. Thats it right there! Someone white speaking about a race matter more then 30 years ago is somehow a racial issue. Unbelievable!!!

What the liberals dont want to face is that it was the Democrat party that filibustered and opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and that it was the Democrat party that opposed women suffrage or that it was the Republican Party that passed the first Civil Rights Act in 1875 only to have a Democrat Supreme Court call it unconstitutional. Or that Susan B Anthony was a Republican or that the Republican party organized groups of people to counter the terrorist wing of the Democrat Party known as the KKK. Why is that the liberals never want to deal with facts and history? For elitists they sure are ignorant.

At least in thought, nearly everyone is somewhat chauvinist concerning their own group, be it race, nationality, social class, state, city, neighborhood, etc.

The problem with race is when thought becomes action. The actions on the Left – even the “mainstream” – are often reprehensible. The most vile examples (think Al Sharpton) are nearly deified by the Left. We on the Right do have some racially extremist factions (ie, KKK, neo-Nazis, etc.), but their actions are condemned by the vast majority of conservatives.

He is no more a racist than Glenn Beck. It goes back to the old adage “Tell a lie, tell it often, it will become the truth.” All they want to do is associate Mr. Barbour with racist, because his name is coming up as a Presidential contender. Like Pavlov’s dogs, anytime Mr.Barbour’s name comes up in the press, it will be followed by cries of “racist comments.”
Mr. Barbour, get in the box with Mr. Beck, Mr. Limbaugh, and Mr. Bush, it is going to be a bumpy ride.

You can’t say Christmas you have to say Holiday. It’s like you had to stop saying “colored people”, you had to say “Negroes”. Then you had to say “Blacks”, then you had to say “Afro Americans”. What’s next? Will minorities ever be happy with what they are called? Whats up with that? Blacks are the most catered to race in America yet they are like babies, always crying and whining and playing the race card. If any group is racist, it’s them. Having been raised in the South (I am 63), I can say I did not experience racism like what is sterotyped by the black leaders of today. It’s mostly all myth. Trace Armstrong said it best on the Apprentice, “I’m not like that, none of my friends are like that, and I don’t know anybody like that”.
I am only quoting their own unaffected race who have recanted the same words to me. It’s an issue to get more and more entitlements.

So much info to absorb. The Jacksons and Sharpsons are so against the Blacks improving their situation. When they open a business or get promoted to a higher position in life, you are no longer an Afro-American. You are considered an Uncle Tom or an oreo. Sharpton lives off the backs of the lazy people that have no ambition what-so-ever. They are a dying breed. My hat is off to the minorities that have evolved into the America that the world is trying to immigrate to. We are the best and the world is jealous. Hard work will get you there, but welfare won’t.

I watched this show where celebrities trace their ancestry and one episode had Spike Lee on it. He discovered that he was descended from a white slave owner. So my question was: should Spike Lee be blamed for slavery since it was his ancestors who were practicing it? He even met with a (white) distant cousin who was also a descendent of the same man. The strangest thing was that she apologized to him for slavery, yet they came from the SAME ANCESTOR. Maybe he should have been apologizing, too? It was funny, but sad, because so many white people have been made to feel responsible for things that they never had any part of.

You Liberals spent quite a bit of time trying to uncover racists at Tea Party events, then when you couldn’t find any you dressed up like morons with stupid signs and shouted “Look! We don’t need to bear false witness about Obama when it comes to him being a thieving communist. His father, mentor and spiritual leader were/are all communists; he took over several U.S. corporations under the guise of saving the economy, which is something a communist would do; one of his closest advisors, Van Jones, who was going to reshape the economy and bring in a green economy is an avowed communist; according to Obama’s health care czar, Obamacare will redistribute wealth, which is a communist concept; he launched the first campaign of his political career in the home of William Ayers, a committed communist, and; he was endorsed by the Communist Party of the United States. You truly would have to be dumber than a box of rocks to think that Obama is a capitalist.

The Constitution means nothing to this administration, except as being a thorn in his side. But not to worry lib, they are on their way to making it null and void. The Tea Partiers and Conservatives are racists, extremists, and basically terrorists in their way of thinking. I don‘t see how you people don’t get it! They are accomplishing their goal. To set us apart and make us fight each other (the libs and repubs) and while we are busy bickering back and forth they are doing their work behind closed doors, deciding when to forge ahead and use an emergency to impose martial law and wa la we have a dictatorship. Its happening now. Don’t you think it is kind of odd with all these strange happenings going on almost daily? The food bill, DADT, Net Neutrality, stopping drilling but letting foreign countrys drill, kicking our allies in the teeth while cozying up to Muslims. Look at NASA! Its all falling into place, like a big jigsaw puzzle…pieces are in place and when they are filled in then you libs will see the picture, the transformation. If we don’t come together we are lost as what we were. I am not saying repubs are the answer because they are just as crooked and guilty but they are the only hope I see right now. They are playing calls to prayers now in places in the states..but yet Christmas in a dirty word? Flying an American Flag is offensive? I will stop before my head explodes..when I get angry I jabber and make not much sense. We are Americans..lets act like it. When we pull together no one can touch us. I will pray for you lost souls.

The race card… the wealthy are evil card… big business is the devil card… You can ALWAYS count on one of these being played by Progressives on ANY subject.

It’s not shocking at all that Progressives would be attacking one of the strongest and best Conservatives out there today. Haley Barbour would make a seriously good President, and they know it, so therefore he must be smeared at all cost.

This the beginning of trying to discredit any potential Republican who could represent a threat to BO in 2012! It’s their usual tactic; divide the American people by color, by income, i.e. rich vs poor. WE THE PEOPLE need to reject any attempt made to separate us. We must hang together lest we hang separately.
