GOP Issues Ultimatum: Obama Must Veto Earmark-Laden Spending Bill

As we’ve reported, Congress is currently tackling a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill, significantly weighed down with 20,000 earmark requests. But Republicans are pushing back Tuesday evening as soon-to-be Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, issued an ultimatum for President Barack Obama.

“If President Obama is truly serious about ending earmarks, he should oppose Senate Democrats’ pork-laden omnibus spending bill and announce he will veto it if necessary,” Boehner challenged in a statement. “This bill represents exactly what the American people have rejected: more spending, more earmarks, and more big government. Republicans strongly oppose this last-ditch spending spree, a smack in the face to taxpayers at a time when we’re borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we spend. Senate Democrats even go so far as to plow more than $1 billion into implementing ObamaCare, despite a growing national revolt against this job-killing health care law.”

Additionally, Boehner stressed that the need to stop Washington’s “job-killing spending binge“ will be a ”top priority” for the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives when lawmakers return for the start of the 112th Congress in January. “We have already banned earmarks and made a pledge to America to end the practice of omnibus bills like this disgrace and cut spending to pre-‘stimulus,’ pre-bailout levels. Instead of making reckless spending decisions in the waning days of the lame-duck session, Senate Democrats should stand down so we can get to work on cleaning up Washington’s fiscal mess.”

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell echoed Boehner’s sentiments Tuesday during a press conference in which he remarked the battle over the pork-laden bill is “eerily similar” to the divisive battle over spending last year:

RedState is in the process of dissecting the newly released omnibus bill; here’s a sampling of some egregious spending projects found so far:

$247,000 – Virus free grapes in Washington State
$413,000 – Peanut research in Alabama
$125,000 – Fishery equipment for the Guam Fisherman’s Cooperative Association
$349,000 – Swine waste management in North Carolina
$277,000 – Potato pest management in Wisconsin
$246,000 – Bovine tuberculosis treatment in Michigan and Minnesota
$522,000 – Cranberry and blueberry disease and breeding in New Jersey
$500,000 – Oyster safety in Florida
$400,000 – Solar parking canopies and plug-in electric stations in Kansas
$165,000 – Maple syrup research in Vermont

I have a suggestion for Congress if they want another pork barrel project to waste money on.

$ 1.1 trillion- How to end your political career.

Republicans, you had better not forget the message that was sent in November, or your names will be added to the research project. The working class is done playing games. No more politics just results. P.S. If you want to be in Congress you had better read the Constitution, and understand it. You should never commit a Pelosi, “We have to pass it in order to find out what is in it.” And remember, The Government exists only to serve the people. If you do not serve the People, we do not need you.

Let’s get serious here. How long have they been making Maple Syrup in Vermont? If they haven’t got it right yet do you honestly think stealing my money is going to help their incompetance. Seriously, who dreams this S@%$ up. I didn’t know oysters had safety issues. Do they need hard hats and safety glasses? Are you people smoking meth. Wake up, the country has real issues. Virus free grapes? $ 413,000 for …….Studying peanuts. They are small brownish colored seeds that grow in a pod underground. Just saved the taxpayer a boatload. If the Swine are wasting, its probably because they didn’t have to earn the money. Oh wait, That’s Congress, sorry. Solar parking canopies, are you nuts. How many people in Kansas have electric cars and 10 hours a day reserved to drive to and from work? You people are beyond a kick in the a@@ tho get your brains going, you need a kick in the teeth. Personally I am tired of hearing about earmarks, which make up less by this report make up 0.2 that is zero point 2 percent, of the entire budget.

the Government normally actually collects about 17-18% of GDP in taxation , NO MATTER WHAT THE TAX RATE IS the actual receipts are pretty stable. so with that in mind eliminating 100% of the earmarks will still main a 1.5+ Trillion Dollar Deficit for FY2011.

So lets stop talking about cutting the pennies and start talking bout cutting the dollars from the budget

Actually, this is a must-pass bill, that is why they are loading it with all the extra goodies, they know it cannot be vetoed. This happens all the time with the appropriations legislation, and the idea that it is not going to happen any more come January … with the same ol’ pols sitting in the chairs on Appropriations?

There are too many RINO’s in Congress that are facilitating these Democratic tactics on the budget, on the DREAM Act, on and on… I disagree that the Republicans have nothing to do with it because they have participated in “politics as usual” all along.

Where is the ultimatum? Where is the Republican discipline? This budget bill that the Dems are pushing through is a perfect opportunity to have all Republicans stand up and refuse to have the Senate proceed on any other bills in the Senate. How did this bill get through cloture anyway without some Republican support? The vast majority of the American people clearly want the spending stopped in Washington. This is the time to not only mouth, but to also act, against it, if the Republicans are serious about it!

Wake up and look at the list of spending. There is plenty of spending in Red states. There is plenty of pork to go around. The Republicans are just as much to blame, if not more so, than the Democrats are. When Bush started we had about 8 Trillion less in National Debt than now. He started this spending spree, and Obama and the rest have only accelerated it.

I think they‘ve made the biggest financial mess that any government’s ever made in this country for a very long time, and Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money. It’s quite a characteristic of them. They then start to nationalise everything, and people just do not like more and more nationalisation, and they’re now trying to control everything by other means. They’re progressively reducing the choice available to ordinary people.

The Conservatives MUST stand firm and NOT pass this bill!!!!! It is NOT a compromise. They are, once again, HOLDING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HOSTAGE TO DEBT. Doesn’t anyone see what is happening? IN DISGUISE, Obama is agreeing to compromise, while all the time bankrupting and steamrolling over our economy. Glenn has always been correct. THEY WANT TO TEAR THIS COUNTRY APART – FROM THE INSIDE. Please call your politicians and tell them to NOT VOTE FOR THIS BILL. IT IS A RUSE, A LIE, A DECEITFUL PLOY BY OBAMA AND HIS LIBERTARDS. God, PLEASE help the American people. WE NEED YOU DESPERATELY.

Earmarks should be ***ILLEGAL*** AND ***FORBIDDEN*** ADD-ONS. THE BILL MUST BE READ FIRST, TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ON C-SPAN OR ON NATIONAL TV BEFORE IT IS PASSED OR REJECTED!

I am truly living in an alternate universe!! Einstein tried to tell us that it could happen.. A place where things sorta look the same as your’e familiar, but things are different, very different.
Back to reality…..I will say this….If our representatives and “senators ” don’t have some kind of revelation…a catharsis at some level…WE ARE DOOMED!!!!!
Did our politicians all take some kind of ‘stupid’ pill? Are the circumstances so far beyond their understanding that the situation has become impossible? That is exactly what it looks like to me.
What’s next? Torches and Pitchforks won’t get it done. Violence must be avoided at all costs. So where do we go from here?
I am at a loss for ideas. Oh, wait….lets get the National Institute of Mental Health to interview each of our people representing us in D.C. and publish the results……OH JUST FORGET IT..
