GOP Lawmakers Claim Air Force Culture Is ‘Hostile Toward Religion’

Several dozen Republican House members have sent a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta accusing the Air Force of creating a “culture that is hostile toward religion.”
According to Fox News, the letter cites several recent incidents in which the Air Force “succumbed” to pressure from outside groups. Among them: a decision to change a Latin office motto to remove reference to God; no longer requiring staff to check for Bibles in Air Force Inn rooms; and suspending an ethics course because the material included Bible passages.
The 66 lawmakers said the changes can be traced back to a memo last year from Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz that said chaplains, “not commanders,” are expected to notify airmen of chaplains’ religious programs. The lawmakers said this suggested “that the mere mention of these programs is impermissible” and that combined with the other incidents, goes “beyond the requirements of the Constitution.”
“The changes lend credence to the notion that the Air Force will remove any reference to God or faith that an outside organization brings to its attention,” they wrote.
The letter, spearheaded by Reps. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), Randy Forbes (R-Va.) and Todd Akin (R-Mo.), urges Panetta to investigate the incidents and whether the Air Force is having a “chilling effect” on people of faith, according to The Hill. It requests Panetta issue “clear Department of Defense policy guidance” to put a stop to it.
The Air Force confirmed to The Hill it had received the letter, and said in a statement that airmen are “free to exercise their Constitutional right to practice their religion — in a manner that is respectful of other individuals’ rights to follow their own belief systems.”
“We are dedicated to creating an environment in which people can realize their highest potential without any consideration of one’s personal religious or other beliefs,” an Air Force spokeswoman said.

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 11:12amMake the USAF part of the US Army again. Until 1948, the USAF was the Army Air Corp. Elimination of the USAF would save a lot of money. When I was in the USAF, we were called the “walking *******”. I was never able to find out what that meant.

Eisenhower). I got it out & this is what is printed on the first page (with it showing it is directlly from the White House, Washington):

Posted on June 24, 2012 at 1:41pmOther than the pilots, air force has it much easier than the other branches, I know people that are in the army, going for ranger eventualy, getting ready to go to afganistan soon, real mans job, my brother retired from the air force after 30 years, mostly behind a desk, quite different than my father who saw real action over normandy when air force was part of the army, I support all branches of the military, just saying ….. air force supplies alot of the things that the other branches need to excel

Check airforce inns for Bibles violates the Establishment Clause. As long as no individual is being prevented from practicing his faith, their is no violation. As a result, Americans held a large variety of beliefs (mostly within Christianity), and they experimented with their own state religions on a more local level. Those experiments led to religious persecution again. Our founders were well aware of the necessity for religious freedom. As such, they (being Christian men) framed a constitution without one mention of God or any particular religion. That by definition makes our constitution, secular. Now, would someone please tell me how the separation of church and state violates the first amendment? Seperation of church and state is for the benefit of religious freedom.

I no longer trust any Article under Faith by the Blaze. If Glenn, is too busy to watch his own site then he deserves to loose his audience.
If the FAITH Editor for the Blaze was my pastor, I would probably would walk out of that Church in a heartbeat. Just look at the Article this weekend. Let me know if I am wrong.

Congressman Akin stated: “When our sons and daughters join the military, they are not signing away their First Amendment right to religious liberty. Unfortunately, it seems that some parts of the military are intent on prohibiting religious expression rather than protecting it. I hope that the Secretary of Defense will respond to this strong letter from over sixty Members of Congress by issuing clear protections for the religious liberty of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.”
It is vital that a consistent policy in regards to religious liberties is issued by the Department of Defense. Religious liberties should be guarded and protected in all of our Armed Forces.

Just like where those in D.C. are saying the sergeant at Arms will have trouble arresting Holder because he has his own security people. The leadership of this country needs to figure out a way to arrest this man even if he has to go through Holder’s security because Congress should be protecting this country. Congress may have to declare war upon those who are using people paid by the United States to keep from being arrested for contempt. The United States Marshalls and those who are trained to deal with this may have to be enacted. The President may have to be removed as well if he intereferes. The Armed forces are to protect the citizens, not one man when it comes down to who is supposed to be protected by the armed services. Do not expect cooperation from the U.S. Air Force, as I feel they have been divided for quite some time. There will be an answer in the Constitution and it is going to have to be a time where The U.S. Senate has to make decisions that have never had to be made before. It is time to earn their money. It is critical that they start getting together and do something about this takeover and standoff within our government. Holder needs to go Now. After the elections, it will be too late, for they are going to steal this election or act above the law.

You can put a couple sentences together, so I’ll bite. You dispense with bringing to Declaration into the conversation as a matter of convenience. The Constitution was signed 11 years after the Declaration and of course the Federalist papers in the following months.
If your semantics are going to defend the Constitution without recognizing the intent of the Declaration there’s not much discussion. You cited the escapes from religious persecution and seem to think the Founders created complete separation because religion was the evil element standing between a govt and the people. My point to INDY is that the Constitution doesn‘t state you can’t have the word God on a building, or a cross on a US park mountain. The Declaration uses the term “decent respect”. Only a moron would think that the government is advancing a secular religion and cramming it down the peoples throats with such displays.

Also, I don’t claim that things have progressed, I simply answered your question to the threat that Christianity poses. Any religion mixed with state power is dangerous. Given free reign to state power, Christianity would fight amongst itself for power as it did in Europe and there would be religious persecution once again.

Report Post »Your point is taken and I didn’t figure your for a liberal prog necessarily. Religious persecution and oppression don’t exist today with the possible exception against Christianity. The atheists cloak themselves in the constitution to strip the belief system which facilitates implementation of any number of ism’s. Personally I would lean toward their actions being a hate crime before I could be convinced their civil rights are being violated with a cross in a public square. I think the Declaration is clear as is the Constitution. I mention the 60′s with respect to the number of SCOTUS cases rendered against Christianity…we’ve been sliding ever since.

The topic first entered the courts in 1947 with a case surrounding busing in schools, parochial included. In the 60′s it became a house of cards with schools banning public reading of the bible, religious tests evolution etc. It is interesting how the schools have been a key mechanism to drive that wedge…along with the “me” generation of the 1960′s….which all might just be simplified to Lysergic acid diethylamide.
