GOP Leader Eric Cantor Pulls Out of Debt Talks Over Dem’s Tax Demands

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — House Republicans, including Majority Leader Eric Cantor, are pulling out of negotiations being led by Vice President Joe Biden on the budget because Democrats insist on pairing spending cuts with at least some tax increases.

Cantor, from Virginia, said it’s time for President Barack Obama to weigh in directly.

The Hill has part of the statement released by Cantor:

“Regardless of the progress that has been made, the tax issue must be resolved before discussions can continue,” Cantor said. “Given this impasse, I will not be participating in today’s meeting and I believe it is time for the president to speak clearly and resolve the tax issue,” he said.

Cantor said that the talks so far have established a “blueprint” for going forward.“I believe that we have identified trillions in spending cuts, and to date, we have established a blueprint that could institute the fiscal reforms needed to start getting our fiscal house in order,” he said.

“That said, each side came into these talks with certain orders, and as it stands the Democrats continue to insist that any deal must include tax increases. There is not support in the House for a tax increase, and I don’t believe now is the time to raise taxes in light of our current economic situation,” he said.

“Once resolved, we have a blueprint to move forward to trillions [in] spending cuts and binding mechanisms to change the way things are done around here,” he said.

Cantor said the Republican-dominated House simply won‘t support tax increases and that he won’t participate in a meeting scheduled for Thursday. Cantor says that plenty of progress has been made in identifying trillions of dollars in potential spending cuts.

UPDATE: According to ABC News, Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., is following suit:

…[Kyl] will also drop out of the debt talks, a source within his office confirms today. The Arizona Republican’s office will issue a formal statement shortly.

What part of “we are broken and the economy will totally collapse if we do not get spending under control” do Democrats not understand? Do they realize those pawns who vote for them will be the first impacted when food stamps, medicaid, unemployment checks, and other wealth transfer payments cease to exist? To insist on tax increases in a down economy goes against every economic theory I was ever taught….but then I went to school when they at least pretended to impart an education. Good for Cantor! A willingness to compromise ONLY serves to polarize both parties to a negotiation, prior to entering discussions.
If you want 1million in new taxes, you demand 10million. If you want 1 million in tax cuts, you demand 10million. Then, you negotiate until absolutely NOTHING happens. You maintain the status quo. So much for ‘change,’ huh? Used to be, before the ‘change’, you demanded 2million if you wanted 1million. Now, you demand 10million. It is only polarizing both parties.
Instead, both parties need to agree “we need to cut spending by $4Trillion” – You pick YOUR $2Trillion you are willing to cut, and I’ll pick my $2Trillion. Then we’ll each salvage $500Billion, so we’ll have a net reduction of $3Trillion – THAT would be negotiation.
Instead, one side is demanding $1million for a 1977 Chevy Nova, and the other side is demanding you pay them $1million to take the Nova off their hands.
I believe Cantor is just stating that it is senseless to continue with dsicussions when nobody shares the objective of resolving the debt, just political gain.
If obama is serious, he will directly join negotiations, rather than sending his lapdog to LOOK like he is engaged. obama is afraid of any direct reflection on himself. he is not willing to risk political capital. If things go poorly, he can blame biden. If things go well, he will claim victory for himself. The marginal tax rate on the highest wage earners should be returned to the prior levels and the additional tax revenue should be earmarked to pay down the deficit. This will be well received by the markets and allow this group who is heavily invested reap benefits on the economic boom that would result from the US showing it is serious about reducing the deficit. Any 5 th. grade math student can do the math and realize you can’t simply cut your way out of our deficit. To say otherwise is to suffer from the same ideological blindness that got us to this point.

The SOLUTION to our Nation’s Fiscal Policy is Simple:
      1) Shift up to 70 % of Washington D.C.’s spending habits back to individual States (e.g., Health and Human Services, Housing, Education, Energy, Agriculture, Labor, Social Security, etc..), then let States decide how to spend the money collected from its citizens
      2) Stop all tax collection by the Federal Government, and mandate that only individual States shall collect taxes from citizens (as originally outlined in the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme court on several occasions)
      3) Individual States will send enough money to Washington D.C. to cover the spending not delegated to the states in Step (1) above (e.g., National Defense, Foreign Diplomacy, those items originally outlined in the Constitution)
      4) Set Back and watch: States grow, Washington D.C. corruption slow down, backroom deals disappear, and our Nation prosper

We are called the United States, not the United State

Dear Eric ~~~~ Please borrow Rep. Allen West’s classic line .. Tell Biden and Obama not to “Blow Smoke Up Your ASS” …. and for a good faith measure they can just start by closing the Department of Education and the Department of Energy for a good faith measure. :) Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

We need to send some adults to DC, that actually face the reality of the over spending started under Reagan, and realize the need to collect some of it back through taxes earmarked for the debt.

      Oh, and JROOK,

I take from your post that you want the evil rich to pay more taxes.
You might want to re-word your first sentence.
The evil rich are not usually “wage earners”. More often than not, they are “wage givers”

That may seem like a petty distinction to you, and I’m sure any 5th grader knows that, but I thought I would point it out anyway.

The dummy Dems REFUSE to cut their excessive spending. REFUSE. As a countermeasure, they are now willing to RAISE TAXES on the American taxpayer.

Geeez, you might have unknowingly left a little tidbit of info out of your comment.

      Or was it knowingly?

I say forget focusing on spending cuts! Eliminate about 90% of the federal government and MASSIVE spending cuts will occur naturally.
      ——————–
Of course it also goes without saying that cutting taxes 90% will ‘slim’ gubment significantly.

Cantor is doing the right thing here. He needs to hold the line. I live in Cantor country and he’s not a guy who totally “gets it” but right now, I‘ll take anyone who’s willing to fight! Taxes must not be raised now. We need the businesses and business owners (news flash: the tax increases would affect business owners and wealth creators the most) to have the ability to expand and hire, and more importantly for them to have assurance that the future will provide a safe haven for those who dare to achieve the American dream. DeMint “gets it” and has a plan that will create a safe environment for economic expansion. Read it, sign it. This is important. http://www.cutcapbalancepledge.com

I am in total agreement with you. It is all just a show. The GOP is in on the destruction of this country and are playing us for fools. The only thing that is going to get their attention is when we start hanging them and burning Wash DC to the ground. In the back rooms where deals are made, they are laughing at us. Soon, they will not be laughing.

      @jrook

Go back to school. You could tax @ 100% and still not operate at this level of spending. How many years would that last? How many of the real businesses would continue to operate?
