GOP Leader Slams Candidate for Nazi Uniform Pics

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top congressional Republican is criticizing a House GOP candidate from Ohio who wore a Nazi uniform during reenactments of World War II battles.

GOP Leader Slams Candidate for Nazi Uniform PicsThe Atlantic magazine reported last week that Ohio Republican Rich Iott has participated in the reenactments wearing a Waffen-SS uniform since 2003. Iott says he has been a historical reenactor in other venues for many years.

House Republicans’ No. 2 leader, Eric Cantor of Virginia, says he repudiates Iott’s actions and would not support someone who would do that.

Cantor’s remarks came after Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida cited Iott as an example of GOP candidates she said are extreme.

Cantor and Wasserman Schultz appeared on “Fox News Sunday.”

This is a “straw man” or “red herring” for the desperate DemocRATS who are flailing and treading water to keep from drowning. Pathetic morons think they can throw out a ridiculous issue like this and people will believe we have Nazi’s running for office. How low can these creeps go?

Dems who cannot run on their miserable policies now clutch at straws to change the dynamics and grab lame stream media headlines. Please give me a break from these Dem lunkheads who for the last four years have run the country into the ground.

It is ACTING!. I do not get these reinactments, but a lot of people do them. That means somebody has to play Nazi. What about WW2 movies….I‘ve never heard actors castigated for their roles as Nazis whose real actions I’m sure were repugnant to them. There are so many really crucial issues right now. This is NOT one of them. Cantor should have shown correct thinking by stating that. Instead he shows himself to be petty and small-minded. I have always tried to like this guy, but he makes it hard. If this is “young Guns” thinking, they should think again. Like about pork.

I do not know how many of you actually went to Rich Iott’s website, reviewed the website of the WWII re-enactor’s, but after reading the distortion of just the history on their site I have to also condemn Iott’s participation with this group.

If Iott wants to be the next Representative from the 9th District of Ohio, then he should come out immediately, explain his naive ignorance of this group, and apologize for his poor choice of belonging to this group.

We have enough fringe elements out in our midst who are creating more problems than they are solving. We have enough attacks from the far left extremists, who continue to use the race card and call us racists without any proof or justification at all.

The Tea Party of Perrysburg Ohio did back this man, and unfortunately threw their support behind him. They should also denounce his association with this Nazi group. I have read and seen enough of this groups vocation to re-live history. This is not a movie or one-act play. I for one do not believe we should be glorifying one of history’s worst group of criminals.

Why would anyone be interested in hearing anything being said by Wasserman Schultz? When are people going to address the real issues in this election and stop being sidetracked by the personal attacks that provide cover for those without a defense of their record of going directly against the people of this nation?

On the other hand, there are a lot of crazies on the internet. If I was you, I wouldn’t brag about using my real name on an anonymous website. Hopefully, even a ten year old knows better. As far as that goes, nobody reading has any idea whether Mary Tebbe is your real name or not or which Mary Tebbe you are. You might even be the Mary Tebbe in Nebraska pretending to be the Mary Tebbe in Florida or Maine. I suppose if you want to prove your macho by using your name, maybe you should include your address as well. I guess that would really prove to the cowards how brave you really are.

Barackem: I don’t think the fact that they re-enact only the victories adversely proves anything. Years ago a friend visited Europe and fell in love with the country of Germany. When he returned home, he started researching their culture and history. He became intensely interested in the politics and Nazi regime of WWII era. It seemed the more he learned, the more he was drawn to learn. He collected Nazi paraphernalia and even learned to speak a mediocre German tongue. He is by NO means subversive. Guess my point is: we have no idea what is in this man’s heart and mind. You know, it’s kinda like expressing yourself in a forum such as this. No one can hear your voice to know it’s tone or the inflection and oft times the words you use are never received the way you intended them. Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinions.

So, what are you saying, Mary? We should stop re-enactments that involve ANY unsavory side? Was the South trying to hold on to slavery “Savory?” And when you forbid re-enactment, that’s another win for the those who wish to rewrite history, since those who enact, and those who gather to watch, and those who read about the re-enactment, and those who watch it on video will be deprived of that reminder of what actually happened. Mary, I’m a Christian; should I raise a stink about Easter? After all, it’s a holiday celebrating, at least in part, the death of my Savior, at the hands of his persecutors. Should I reprimand anyone who dresses as a roman for Halloween? Politically Correct is INCORRECT, Mary, because it clouds issues, and banishes any pretense at good productive discussion. Get off the high horse, come down here with real people who have faults, blemishes, regrets etc…. if you’re the only perfect person, where’ve you been hiding away?

But, you don’t run over to the side of evil and Eric Canter should have rigorously questioned Debbie Wasserman Schultz. “What the hell are you babbling about you dumb ….”

As far as the tribe of Joesph of the Northern Kingdom goes the blood line of Israel is supposed to be a blessing to the world and to the United States of America. It has never been intended to be a curse. I have read the writings of our founders and I do believe they were blessed.

I don‘t know how much you know of Glenn Beck’s faith but through that blood line America is intended to be one of the most blessed nations on the earth under the precondition that we serve the lord God. But, if we fail to serve the lord God America is cursed and we will be destroyed.

I am amazed but if that people do not understand Glenn Beck. He is really quite transparent. He says what he believes. Glenn Beck may not always be right but he is a honest man. But you need to understand his faith to understand him.

The man belongs to a re-enactment group, he has not, does not, and will not be dragging Poles and Jews to the train station. When re-enacting a war you need TWO sides, that means somebody has to play the bad guys, not actually BE the bad guys. I re-enact a farmer-hunter-militiaman of the 18th century and have never entertained the desire to gun down an Indian or British soldier. You may have been published (clap, clap, clap), but your logic has taken a side trip concerning this subject.

First you attempt to make a distinction between a professional actor and someone who does battle reenactments in his spare time, then when that doesn’t work for you, you change your argument to portray him as someone who’s downing a cold one in the clothes he wears on the weekend.

Logic is not even close to being the same, and the equation of a man engaged in a battle re-enactment and a man who’s swigging a beer with his buddies while dressed in his favorite garb for lounging is sophomoric. I indeed saw the picture, and your attempt to read into it what you do is evidence of the same kind of thinking. Men involved in hobbies together often have their picture taken with their buddies after activities, and sometimes don’t bother to change clothes first. The insinuation that the man has Nazi sympathies because of it is simply too blitheringly absurd to comment on further. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you‘re reading a thousand more that just aren’t there.

For this person to NOT comprehend the valuable historic contributions that war re-enactments offer and the opportunities they provide for history to ‘come alive’ for history buffs of all ages goes to the narrow-minded responses all the way down the post. If this person isn’t a typical emotional/liberal, he/she might consider giving emotionalism/liberalism a whirl. There’s certainly not enough cerebral process there to qualify as a rational/conservative.

      @Jack Russell
You make a very valid point there with the history coming alive argument. It’s one thing to sit in a history class and have the teacher move doo-dads all over a board, or draw diagrams, in order to illustrate battlefield tactics and maneuvers. It’s quite another thing be able to see it re-enacted, as if you were actually watching the history unfold before your eyes. For history buffs, or World War II buffs, Civil War buffs, Revolutionary War buffs, it provides a fabulous way to learn and to meet with people who share the same fascination. This overwrought hand-wringing from Cantor and DWS down in Florida–nothing more than abject stupidity.

Mintyfresh, you clearly don’t have a clue what you are talking about. Re-enactments are ways for history buffs to show history to people who may not be able to learn strictly through books. This is a visual experience that can make kids understand the incident being portrayed and/or increase their desire to learn more about history.

How are those bad things? They aren’t, anything that promotes interest in children and adults learning more about history is a good thing. There are re-enactments all over the country for many different periods of time, do you think the people re-enacting the British at Yorktown or Lexington/Concord are anti-American pro-British?

This whole episode is idiotic. Where are all the news organizations bashing all the candidates that play on the confederate side in civil war reenactments. It’s the exact same thing.

Who cares it is a reenactment. That is what Progressives want. To change history or erase it. It’s important to remember our history. I never heard a word from anyone when Tom Cruise and many others filmed Valkyrie. Did anyone else?

The “Wannabe Tyrants” will publicize the irrelevant using their “preponderance of the propaganda” to avoid a discussion of the issues. Pay no attention to the smokescreen.

The only relevant issue is freedom or tyranny!!!!

This is sooooo… stupid. The guy participates in a world war II re enactment with his son. Some people would call that a history lesson. Cantor needs to grow a pair. The Ohio candidate state clearly that his personal feelings and position are fully against what the Nazis did and stood for. This was nothing more than a part in a play. At least he stood up for himself. If 11/2 is going to go our way then these so called leaders better stop running scared.

I would expect Wassernan-Schultz to sink so low to spin the reenactment issue…..but I also have lost respect for Cantor. Why must politicians speak before they know anything about an issue? There is nothing to repudiate. Reenactment is a very popular hobby in Ohio…and Iott has participated in many types of reenactments over the years…and I do think it can be a good father/son (or daughter) activity to share. Google Iott’s home page to see his comments and other photos from various reenactments.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, I’ve watched them “debate” sides on Fox and it is all word games and mis rep. of facts. this site; http://voteiott.com/2010/10/rich-iott-statement-on-the-latest-kaptur-campaign-lie/ ; is R. Mithra predicts, with historical ignorance: “The south will rise again.”

Robert E. Lee was a Nazi? Oh, no, wait! I’ve got it: Adolf Hitler was a Confederate general, who killed himself at Appomattox!

      What a mind.

A lot of men who re-enact cival war related battles served as the bulk of the soldiers in the movie “Gettysburg” (they all have their own uniforms and gear etc)…I lived in the Ashland/Mansfield OH area at the time…it was a big deal. Re-enactment does contribute to learning history. Rent the movie and see them in action.

Man, that is some serious faulty analogy.

“Derp, it is the same thing as playing the Confederacy in Civil War reenactments.”

OK. First, before I respond, take 30 seconds and try to realize for yourself why it isn’t the same thing.

Couldn’t figure it out? I’m not surprised.

No one reenacts slave ownership. No one dresses up as a southern gentlemen and pretends to whip a black boy named “Toby.”

One can reenact World War II without dressing up as a damned Nazi. If he was dressed as a standard German solider in a standard German military unit, then this wouldn’t be as big of a deal. However, he is dressed as a Nazi in the SS.

The SS existed to hunt down and kill Jews and to protect Hitler; NOT to fight the Allies.

So, no, this is not OK.

Ha, I spoke too soon. Looks like my last message was deleted. Let me see if I can sum it up without any of my previous frustration.

The defense that someone needs to be dressed as a Nazi in WWII reenactments is false. There were German troops who weren’t SS, and those were the ones that fought the Allies in World War II.

Reenacting as an SS agent is less similar to reenacting as a typical Confederate solider and is more similar to reenacting as a slave owner. No one does that. No one pretends to be a southern man who owns blacks, because that is offensive and nothing to be proud of.

The SS were the Nazis who were charged by Hitler to hunt down the Jews. That is simply nothing to be proud of either.

Please don’t delete this comment. I just want to have the discussion.
