GOP Proposes Tax Cuts, Spending Freeze

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republican Leader John Boehner onWednesday proposed a two-year freeze on all tax rates and a cut in government spending to the levels of 2008, before a deep recession took hold of the economy.
In a broadcast interview, the Ohio Republican said he was offering a “bipartisan” alternative to the package of business tax incentives and infrastructure spending that President Barack Obama was slated to announce later Wednesday in Cleveland.
Obama has charged that the GOP criticizes him harshly, without offering any policy alternatives. Boehner touted his freeze-and-cut roadmap to recovery as an option instead of a catchall spending bill that Congress would pass later this fall.
Boehner said the biggest problem with the economy currently is the “uncertainty facing small businesses” that have been reluctant to engage in significant new hiring.
Appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Boehner said the American people are asking, “Where are the jobs?“ and that the Obama White House is ”out of touch” with voters. But he also said that “I‘m open to the president’s ideas.”

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 12:12amCutting spending is EASY. Try reducing the number of employees at every Gov. agency by 10%. Freeze all pay raises for Gov. employees, and all politicians until the budget has been reduced to a Designated level. That would be a “Sustainable” level. If it takes two full years So Be It.
Stop paying 1 term congressmen & women, and Senators a retirement after serving a minimum of one term. Stop paying off student loans for all congressional staffers. Cut the number of staffers by 75%. I think the current # of staffers is 22. WTF? Stop Nancy Pelosi from spending $18,753 a month for office space in San Francisco. That is paid by taxpayers. Stop Pelosi’s AF 2 round trip flights from D.C. to Frisco. Stop spending $$ so Bo, the Obamas dog, can fly on a seperate plane. Cut spending on education by 50%. Not 1 $ spent on education has made our students any smarter. The $$ go to the Teachers & their unions, not the students. Open up Federal infrastructure jobs to non-union bidders. Make earmarks a Federal crime. Make all lobbying activity a misdemenor 1st offense. A felony for a 2nd offense. Attach jail time to the punishment.
End the Anchor Baby plan. It is NOT in the 14th Amendent. Or anywhere in the Constitution. Refuse to educate, medicate, or incarcerate all ILLEGAL Aliens. End any & all welfare claims for Illegals. Lower the $$ numbers that allow a couple with two children and an income of $86,000 to qualify for several welfare programs. Lower the poverty level so individuals that earn $22-24,000 can NOT get any welfare of any kind. Bail out No person, place or thing. Get those making a livable wage off of welfare. Get those that do not really qualify for welfare, disability etc. the Heck off of the dole. Make WORK 1st the real deal. No work no Welfare.
Little by little, IT ALL ADDS UP! just like PinochioBams millions & millions of $5-10-& 20 campaign contributions. Yeah Right!

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 12:04amFreeze the problem and when you thaw it out after two years you still have the same problems. We need massive government budget cuts, reduce taxes to the individual and especially business, no more money sent overseas, and overall responsibility shown by the government with OUR MONEY.
Mr. Boehner, show some real leadership and give the people a real plan. No more of the lollipops and gumballs! The People have grown well beyond that. We’re watching you!

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:50pmHow about this one: 15 minutes can save you 15 percent.
That’s all the time it takes to vote for candidates who promise to mandate an immediate 15 percent headcount reduction in CURRENT Federal Government employment in the DC area. After all, everyone reading this has gone through at least one of these cutbacks, but never the Federal Government. And you know that whatever it is that the Feds do — whatever that is — can be done just as well with 15 percent fewer workers, probably better. Considering that they all vote Democrat it‘s not like you’re going to lose any voters. Even show them greater consideration (bum’s rush) than you’ve received: two weeks severance for every year of service. Do take advantage of our outplacement services! I hear they’re hiring in North Dakota. Starbucks? I’m not sure…maybe Maxwell’s House. Wi Fi? In the right driveway. See Ya!
Oops, the tagline is already being used? Nevermind.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:06pmWe have to make some painful choices if we are going to preserve the financial integrity of the USA. Entitlements have to be cut. Its time to defund mommies who decide to have children out of wedlock. The defunding of that activity would also cure a serious social ill by taking away the incentive. The Defense Department must downsize the bureaucracy that sucks up far too many dollars without producing one new weapon. The federal government must sell off the real estate they own outside of parks and military bases. It is ridiculous that Washington owns substantial portions of property in western states and Alaska. Sell that property off to individuals and apply the money toward the national debt. Revive the Grace Commission report and implement the recommendations. Eliminate all unconstitutional government agencies like Education and Commerce. It is possible to balance the budget within a few years, but its going to require pain and unwavering leadership.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:03pmReduce it to 2008 government spending levels? NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Not nearly good enough! We should be slashing and hacking the congressional budget into itty, bitty pieces at this point. Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:17pmThe republicans in the house have brought these cuts up and the democrats voted against them:
Cut the New Non-Reformed Welfare Program ($25 Billion Savings)
Eliminate Federal Employee Pay Raise ($30 Billion Savings)
Reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac ($30 Billion Savings)
Sell Excess Federal Property ($15 Billion Savings)
Prohibit Hiring New IRS Agents to Enforce Health Care Law ($15 Billion Savings)
Taxpayer Subsidized Union Activities ($1.2 Billion Savings)
Prohibit Stimulus Funding for Promotional Signage (Tens of Millions)
Prohibit Sleeper Car Subsidies on Amtrak ($1.2 billion Savings)
Bipartisan Proposal to Terminate AEITC ($1.1 billion Savings)
Some more that they have proposed are:
Prohibit Mandated Project Labor Union Agreements That Increase Government Construction Costs
Saves: 10 to 20 percent per construction project, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars
Suspend Federal Land Purchases
Saves $266 million next year and $2.66 billion over ten years
Require Collection of Unpaid Taxes From Federal Employees
Savings of potentially $1 billion
In 2008, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reported that over 97,000 federal employees were delinquent on their federal income taxes, owing a total of $1 billion in unpaid taxes
Prohibit Taxpayer Funding for Campaigns in Foreign Countries and Recoup the Misspent Funds
Saves $23 million
Eliminate the “Dodd Clinic” Earmark From Obamacare
Savings of $100 million over ten years
The republicans are working hard to help America recover and it is the democrats who is stalling and voting good cuts in the budget down.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:15pmWell, Poppopschell, I really wasn’t making assumptions specific to you. I was speaking more along the lines of our generation. While I may or may not be as old as you are, I am in my 50‘s and I’ve paid in thousands of dollars to the Social Security System as you have. However, it‘s been our generation that’s allowed the fox into the henhouse and someone needs to pay. It should be us, otherwise we’re going to bury our children and grandchildren under our legacy of debt.
So, regardless of who you are and what you’ve done in the past, you‘re not exempt from accepting a role in the mess that we’re in. And BTW, I’m not a wild Glenn Beck fan, but I‘m sure he’s speaking of individual honor, which is what I was speaking of. It’s all that I have control of. I’m not responsible for the honor of others, even the ones that claim to “represent” me in Congress and the White House. I am not renouncing honor; on the contrary. You are making unfair & insensitive assumptions by saying so. Fortunately I‘m pretty thick skinned and I don’t need to have my hand patted.
Still and all, my friend, we’re only going to get things right by people like us being honorable and sacrificing for something that will make a lasting change for the better, for future generations. Nothing will change if we all want things to change, unless it directly impacts us.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 9:27amDRYDAVE, You are correct about about the need too cut SS funding. But this will not happen untill the people collecting the funds would vote for a congress that would do this. I keep reading about SS trust funds being robbed. There is not a trust fund to rob. In the Supreme Court decision in Helvering v. Davis (1937) the holding states: The proceeds of both the employee and employer taxes are to be paid into the Treasury like any other internal revenue generally, and are not earmarked in any way. SS funds are a flat tax that none of us have a claim and SS checks are really just welfare based on the age of the person recieving the money.

Fact is the tax triangle has been inverted. The majority of these services are supported by local taxes. Now we are paying the lions share of taxes to the feds. The states/local governments are being bled dry by unfunded federal mandates and programs. That is why there is no money left for police, fire and teachers.

As for the police and firefighters? It’s a chosen occupation. They were aware of how undervalued the profession was. If money was seriously important to them, why would they have taken to it?

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 8:54pmThat’s right! It’s that easy! STOP SPENDING MY MONEY!
And while your at it, stop telling me I’m not doing my “fair share”. (I’m not “well off” just because I don’t ask my local welfare agency for food stamps or free milk, and yes, I pay my own mortgage even when it hurts.)
Stop growing the list of “needy” people, who are loudly demanding a bigger and bigger chunk of my paycheck, all the while reducing the list of taxpaying citizens. (They manage to vote, but the only dog they have in the fight is the size of their government welfare check that comes in one form or another.)
Stop taking Social Security from me, too. I‘m never going to benefit from it and I’m already in my 50′s. (I can retire later, they say, in my 70′s, without stopping to think that we don’t all have desk jobs – some of us actually perform manual labor.)
And let’s really inform and “educate” the public. Let’s talk loudly and frequently about the taxes we already pay. (The State and Federal Income taxes. Remind people about Sales and Property taxes. State and Federal Liquor and Tobacco taxes. State and Federal Gas and Diesel Taxes. What about the State and Federal taxes we pay cell phones and utilities? What about tolls and fees and fines? In some places your haircut is taxed. Can’t forget user fees at already tax funded State and National Parks. It’s endless… we’re taxed on prepared meals, taxed on hotel rooms, taxed on rental cars and taxed on airplane flights. We’re taxed on everything we DO, BUY, OWN, NEED & WANT!)
Let’s remind Uncle Obama and our cousins in Congress that we know, too, that every time they tax those “greedy” corporations, all those costs are passed right along to us. (And because we know this, we don’t blame the greedy corporations for the price increase. We blame the additional taxes that have been levied on us by what passes for our “representation” these days.)
I could go on and on, but I don’t want to bore you anymore. I’m sure all of you are aware of just how deeply these people have been reaching into our pockets. (And the way they’re fishing around now, it’s practically sexual assault!)

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:05pmI’m cxurious. Do Christian have an obligation to help the less fortuante? The reson IMO for why Govt has taken over the resposnibility is partly do to Christians failing to live Christ’s teachings. I ask every Christian here: do you pay an honest tithe? Do you spend time helping the poor? Do you give to local nont for profit local charities rto help the needy? What % of your gross pay do you spend to do these things? Do you spend 15% or more?
Report Post »Drydave
Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:35pmI’m not a Christian. And nearly 30% of my gross pay goes to the government and lands in someone else’s pocket. I guess I allow that to qualify for my charity contributions, on a bi-weekly basis.
As a Christian, you’re obligated to do what you see as the Christian thing to do. However I am not. Further, I shouldn’t be forced to give my wages to someone else at gun point, which is how taxes are taken. Under the threat of a loss of my liberty.
I pay thousands of dollars in Federal Income Tax alone. That money is given to people, activities, and policies I don’t necessarily agree with. Is that the Christian way? Would Christ approve of me having my wages robbed from me at the point of a spear? All to help someone that I may or may not think is deserving of my help? Kind of like a Christian providing funding for abortion? Are you really equating paying taxes with a religious duty? And who are you to determine what a fair duty is for me to pay?
As a society, I believe that there are those among us that truly need help. Yet, the list of “needy” is growing and growing and growing. And in my opinion, that list has expanded far beyond those truly in need of my help. When nearly half of all citizens in this country are exempt from paying income tax, well, that tells me a lot.

If another player tried to ream you out of spite to make you lose, I loaned you money to pay their rent. This game? MONOPOLY!

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 9:59pmSmarty, the ME wars have cost us over one trillion $s. To support our “allies” overseas costs us about one trillion $ each year. Do your homework. Glenn has said this same thing on a number of occasions. In the last year, Glenn has come to realize what beingt the policeman of the world is costing the USA. I was I admit sad to see Palen at the 8/28 event because she advocates war with Iran and is a NeoCon on foreign/military policy.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 10:59pmSo tiring, all the promises, promises, promises made before an election. What was that line Pelosi used …. something about well, that’s just what he said during the campaign…oh, Clinton brought up the just to get elected remark about that stellar man of character…. the list of lies goes on and on, but as I said in the beginning…..so tiring.

Posted on September 8, 2010 at 11:18pmWhere to cut spending? How about the Dept. of Energy and Education? What have THEY done? Zippo! Then, bring back the teeth of the Welfare Reform Act and give welfare recipients two years to get their act together…start taking classes at community colleges or trade schools. The money we save by cutting the Dept. of Education would/could be used to do something constructive instead of “public service” entitlements. Keep the Military budget as is. The Dept of Agriculture could also be parred way back, as could the Dept of Commerce. Freeze federal employees salaries, and cut the EPA’s budget by 50%. Coolidge did it…and it worked just FINE.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 2:19amAs long as a 50% spending cut is to the 2008 level or lower. If it is, then good. If is not then your right, 50% cut in spending or we start firing elected represenitives!

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 4:20amWe could save a ton of money by closing the Department of Energy, Education and the EPA. These 3 are blocking jobs, spending money and failing at their mission. We could save more by closing our bases in Europe, Korea and Japan, using Guam and Diego Garcia as our bases in the region.
We need to cut and cut deep on Government spending and start paying down our past excesses.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 12:42pmHow about cutting the money we send to the UN by 75% for starters and then all other spending programs by 30-50%. Oh yeah, and how about the politicians pay for their own health care and only let them be paid for the time they are in office. No need to pay them for life. Eliminate unions in the public sector and the pensions as well. You eliminate the pensions, then you can afford to pay your civil servants more in salary, thus making them responsible for their own retirement. Personal responsibility.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 1:19pmFirst I would make it so any Senator/House member figure their salary on the median income in their state or district. All Federal employees and staffers also. End all the crazy pensions and return every government employee into the Social security system. All health care ends on your last day and you can research COBRA like all us small people. End all laws that treat the people in the cart the same as the people pulling the cart. NO MORE LAWS THAT DON’T APPLY TO EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN.

Posted on September 9, 2010 at 1:37pmHow about we cut out foreign aid at least to the countries that take our money and then stab us in the back first chance they get, Cut out unnecessary agencies like education and energy, close our borders, examine the wisdom of the 14th amendment as currently interpretted to provide for anchor babies, actually enforcing the laws we already have on the books in regards to immigration, cut out all these stupid expenditures of university grants such as the mating habits of lobster a and such, and how about term limits to disband these professional politicians. As a matter of fact, I’d vote to cut both houses of Congress in half. With all the new technology we have, it would certainly be easy to do what they do with a lot less resources. Think about it. If we only have half as many of them, we have half as many politicians screwing everything up. Less is more!
