GOP Rep: ‘Scott Brown Should Be Ashamed of Himself’ for Opposing Ryan Budget Plan

The conservative jeers will likely be heard from afar — “RINO! RINO! RINO!” — following Sen. Scott Brown’s bold statement that he will vote “no” on Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan.

In an op-ed piece published early this morning on Politico, Brown made it clear that he sees serious issues with Ryan’s proposals.  In addressing the reasons why he will not support the plan, he writes:

First, I fear that as health inflation rises, the cost of private plans will outgrow the government premium support— and the elderly will be forced to pay ever higher deductibles and co-pays. Protecting those who have been counting on the current system their entire adult lives should be the key principle of reform.

Second, Medicare has already taken significant cuts to help pay for Obama’s health care plan. The president and Congress cut a half trillion dollars to the private side of Medicare — meaning seniors are at risk of losing their Medicare Advantage coverage.

Another key principle is that seniors should not have to bear a disproportionate burden. But that doesn’t mean we do nothing. If Medicare is to survive for current beneficiaries and future generations, we must act. The sooner Congress addresses this, the less painful it is likely to be — but more difficult adjustments will be required if we delay.

GOP Rep: Scott Brown Should Be Ashamed of Himself for Opposing Ryan Budget Plan

To mend the system, Brown believes there should be a greater focus on preventing fraud, a push for tort reform and “increas[ed] congressional oversight of how Medicare reimburses providers,” among other cost-saving measures. Rather than radically reforming the system, as Paul proposes, Brown claims that we don’t need to change “Medicare as we know it.”  He advocates “work[ing] inside of Medicare” to solve the fiscal issues associated with it.

Over at The Washington Post, Jennifer Rubin tackles Brown’s criticisms point-by-point.  In frustration, she writes, “Has Brown even read Ryan’s plan?”  Rubin says that Brown doesn‘t seem to understand Ryan’s proposal and that his counter solutions for amending Medicare mirror provisions that are already present in Ryan’s plan. In sum: Brown has nothing new to offer.

Yesterday, Rep. Paul Ryan appeared on NBC‘s Meet the Press to address criticisms he’s received from Newt Gingrich, among other right-leaning politicians and commentators. You can watch the appearance below:

The Hill:

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) scolded the senator for opposing the House GOP budget from Rep. Paul Ryan.

An Illinois Republican on Monday said Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) should be “ashamed of himself” for opposing Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget plan.

“Respectfully, Scott Brown ought to be ashamed of himself,” Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) told Neil Cavuto on the Fox Business Network. “This is the defining moment of this generation. We have got to be bold. We know these entitlements have to be reformed to be saved. He knows that.”

Hey, what do you expect from a guy like Brown? Boldness is not what RINO’s are all about. They sit on the fence and never act until they are forced to.

We need to count our losses and move on.

@Creestof and anyone else who thinks our seniors and the upcoming retirement age is getting money off of them is sadly mistaken…I am not retirement age yet but I have paid into social security my entire working life and so has everyone else who is on social security. I don’t understand where people think we are supporting social security and medicare, it’s the govt who keep robbing (oops) borrowing from social security and never pays it back. Our seniors are suffering right now, my mother has medication that she needs and ever since Obamacare started(which supposedly is not until 2014) the minute it was passed, all the medicines have gone way up and the supplement insurance is paying less. Medicines my mother paid co-pay as $10, $20, and $60 are now $150, $200. There is no way she can pay these kind of prices. She lives on a fixed income but makes too much to get help but can’t pay for the meds. Obamacare is trying to rid us of our valued and much loved seniors.
And my mother paid into social security all of her working life too.
So people get off the idea that you’re supporting any seniors, you’re supporting all those teenage single moms to have babies before their time, and paying to feed, house, and get medical help for the children. Our big govt needs overhauling in a lot of different sectors.

I know exactly what you are saying sheshell!
My dad lives with our family because he can not afford to live on his own. He is a veteran (don’t even get me started about the “care” he received in the VA system!) who worked all his life, most of it saving other people as a Paramedic. He also put money into his own retirement, but lost most of it to his crazy ex wife. His SS plus monthly retirement check are barely enough to pay for all of the supplemental insurance he needs and STILL his co-pay and deductibles eat up the majority of this money month after month. Not only did he pay into ss all his life, my husband and I have (and will continue) been contributing all our working lives with no hope of ever getting any back AND we pay extra bills every month so that I know my dad has a roof over his head, heat, electricity and food (on his own, he would literally have about $500 a month to cover all of that once his medical needs are taken care of). I don’t have a problem helping my dad out, that is what we should all be doing, taking care of our elders! My problem is that both my husband and I continue to be forced to pay ss with no hope of getting any back AND pay the extra to take of my dad…. it is one messed up system!!

While it was good to see him break up the “Kennedy Seat”, if we get a RINO, why not have a Dem, at least they would not tarnish further the GOP brand.

He voted for the Financial Reform Bill which has and will grow the gov’t bureaucracy even more. And to top it off, he sat with the Dems during the last State Of The Union, and now he’s opposing spending cuts at a time when spending cuts is the only SANE way out of this mess!!! What do you losers think is gonna happen when you drive out all the business in America? Who pays for all you losers to remain losers? My goodness, you people are frightfully obtuse and naive.

Medicare and SS are pyramid schemes that are unsustainable without population and demographic control. Population and demographic control are detrimental to individual freedom. The only other realistic options are to do nothing and let it collapse or completely restructure them both. Restructuring means that future senoirs and otherwise dependent individuals will have to accept that they won’t get the same deal as senoirs and depentents do today. While that may be shameful to many people it doesn’t make any less true. Now, the doing nothing option means that the big two will function for another 20 years give or take before abruptly coming to a complete stop thus cutting payments and benefits to everyone indefinately. Liberal people would like to believe that money isn’t real and the government will magically pump more and more imaginary money into the big two once they fail. The problem with that idea is that our credit is already too thin and by that point it will be impossible without full blown socialism which is detrimental to individual freedom. Even with socialism the money will again run out after they’ve shuffled it and there will be no growth to help supplement. In short, you can seize every last dollar in the country continuously and it won’t come close to sustaining our social programs. The best advice for everyone from here on out is to take care of yourself because either way, cuts are coming, be it through rationing or increased responsibility.

@ CREESTOF I just love your informed and intelligent comments about the older people that are on Medicare.. #1 Out of my $952.50 per mo Social Security the Gov’t deducts $96.40 for Part B Medicare, $29.10 for Part D, Prescription drug, and $13.00 for Part C medigap insurance.. Do the math kiddo and see if you can/could live on what’s left..Those deductions are MANDATORY not voluntary..I was a single mother of 2. (after my divorce) and I worked for a living, no welfare, foodstamps or medicaid. You can be sure that SS and Medicare taxes were taken out of my checks from ALL three of my jobs. The main reason that SS and Medicare are in trouble is that the Democraps, starting with LBJ, decided that they needed the money in that fund for other things and they started to systematically strip it of said funds..This was NOT supposed to happen. Those funds were supposed to be invested and let grow so they would COVER the programs they were intended for..I will conceed that the Dems were not the only ones that robbed the fund..Every administration since then has continued to do so.

      1) It’s not “your” check. If you have been on it more than a few years you have already exhausted what you paid into it LONG ago. No “investing” is going to make it last 15-25-40 years without taking from future generations payroll deductions. What “we” give you now is out of monies collected from “us”, who will be unable to collect a dime when we reach your age due to it being bankrupt. Oh, and what about all those people who began collecting from it when the program first started who never paid a penny into the program?
      2) Your average single working person these days, has 2-3 times as much pulled out of their check (which they earned and were not given) for their health/prescription insurance. So now you are complaining that you have to pay out (from the check “we” give you) for “your” insurance/prescriptions?
      3) You are not supposed to be able to “live on it”…it is supposed to supplement your OWN savings…you know, that funny thing where people decide to not buy this or that and invest it instead, for the days when they are no longer able to work?
      4) So you paid a fraction (of what you have gotten so far) into a system, to be invested by some entity you have no control over…and now complain they did not do a good enough job with it so you can maintain the standard of living you want?

If you are not happy with the “gift” us currently working people are giving you each month…get a job at Walmart as a door greeter.

This is the end of a column I wrote in 2006:

Private propjects should be eliminated from appropriations bills, and this government needs to cut spending and stop waste. Departments need to exercise accountability!

Our debt is growing at $1.5 billion a day, and we spend $1.5 billion a week on the fiasco in Iraq.

Everyone who reads this should contact our representatives in both houses of Congress and let them know that they are being watched carefully prior to Election Day!

@ Teabagranny- The content of your post is accurate, but for one small item. Social Security was enacted in order to SUPPLEMENT the income of retirees. It was never meant to be the sole source. I too was a single mother. After a nasty divorce which left me with a pile of bills I continued to work AND save, albeit a small amount, weekly. When I remarried , quite a bit later, we invested a little each month. We are now semi- retired. We STILL save. I drive a 16 year old car and rarely go out to eat. Neither of us had careers. We were factory workers. But thanks to thrift and foresight, we live comfortably. Let this be a lesson to those who depend on the government for sustenance.Self reliance is your only sure thing!

      @calijohn,

The jobs come when there is more private capital and equity for business owners and management teams to invest in growth, new equipment, new products, new research, new sales initiatives and new TOP LINE revenue.

Growth and jobs are not created through bottom line savings, which while they can contribute to profitability and share price (the markets are a measurement of profits and the assessment that greater profits may be realized). Growth and jobs come with new money – or increases in top line revenue and until this President and his government get their feet off of the necks of the most productive, America and her markets and industries will not be as attractive to investors and we will continue to shrink and lose jobs.

The second this President, through his actions and policies exhibits pro-growth behaviors, jobs will be created and real growth will return. Until then, private equity and capital will be preserved as best one can (metals, tangibles) and jobs will remain flat. If you want to blame someone, blame spending and the tax man – those favoring spending and taxes killed the economy.

I think that EVERYONE commenting forgets the truth. The money I earn is MY MONEY. Whether is is millions or $20K per year. I make it, I should be able to spend as I wish. The Fed tax, state tax, FICA, medicare take away from me and my personal savings or spending plan. Get rid of the current system of taxing income — go with the Fair Tax and tax spending. All of the above nonsense would cease to exist, because we would be paying taxes when we spend NOT when we earn. Then our savings plan can be our own. It does NOT mean we won’t have a medical to fall back on or a retirement to fall back on, we will BUT first and foremost our own money to fall back on.

Actually, I am against the Ryan plan as well. We are already in a deficit that we cannot escape, and unless we start doing things NOW about spending of today’s money, what will 10 years later do? Last year the Med/Med/SSDI/ and interest on the debt was $2.245 Trillion, while Federal income was $2.2 Trillion. Unless you fix these entitlement programs now, by the time Ryan’s budget actually starts to take effect, we will be another 6-15 Trillion in the hole, for a total of 20-29 Trillion, or 150% or so of GDP. I.E. WE ARE BROKE NOW!!! Time to means test. Time to refuse emergency room care to people that could wait a day for the emergicare centers or free clinics to open up. Time to allow the Federal Government to broker with drug companies for the lowest prices and buy in bulk. There are thousands of ways to save money, but they wont do any of them, because it makes too much sense.
