GOP Rep. Walden Announces Chairmanship Using Morse Code

While Morse code may not be popular these days, it seems fitting that the new chairman of the House Commerce Committee’s Communications subcommittee would announce his new post using the dots and dashes via Twitter.
Rep. Greg Walden (R-WA) issued the following tweet yesterday:
That sent the newspaper The Hill scrambling for answers. Using an online Morse code translator, the newspaper came up with the following announcement: “”WILL CHAIR COMM AND TECH SUB 73S W7EQI.”
The first part is self explanatory, but the last part (the number and letter combination) forced some more digging. The Hill explains what it found:
The Hill needed help on the last part, and a Walden aide came to the rescue:
“73s means ‘best regards’ or a similar sign-off. W7eqi is his [amateur radio call sign],” he said. Walden has a long history in the radio business where he picked up the lingo.
Walden issued a follow-up tweet to clarify his announcement:
Too bad Twitter has already announced its top tweets of the year. Walden could probably make a strong case for his.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 12:11pmPaul Walden is a talented man who should be a great Chair for this committee. I attended Hood River Valley High School with him in the mid ’70s. His father owned the local AM staion, KIHR. Paul had his own show in the evenings, and did a great job. He took over the stations (they added KIHR-FM) and guided them through a transition from a farming community to a wind-surfing mecca. Paul is smart, practical and experienced. With his past involvement in the radio business, he will do this post an honor! He represents the state of Oregon, from Hood River eastward to Idaho, north to south.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 10:53amIt would be nice for a change that the chair actually knew something about what he/she is to oversee. In most past cases, we would have been better off randomly picking names from high school remedial class members.

Posted on December 17, 2010 at 11:01amOne could say he’s self reliant.. we should all consider HOW to use Morse code..while I doubt the need for it one NEVER knows.. also learn how people lived say 100 years ago and how they managed as well as what to eat.. from capturing yeast from the air to how to clean a deer.. it’s a great family activity and a teaching tool as well.. This man has CLASS and could be trying to tell us something..LOL..

Tech nerd and congressman all in one may be a interesting combination tied togeather; as long as they stick to the constitution and their promises made to the voters, keeping DC the hell out of our lives to the most possible, then fine.
