GOP Representative Thaddeus McCotter Resigns from Congress

Even among small government conservatives, Congressman Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan is something of an underground figure. The frequent Red Eye guest, musician and orator launched an ill-fated bid for the GOP Presidential nomination last year, and has since remained comfortably out of the spotlight, still something of a hipster’s Republican.
(Related: Thaddeus McCotter wrote a ‘train wreck’ TV script)
That is, until today, when McCotter announced, to the surprise of constituents and press alike, that he was resigning his post in Congress in a post on his Facebook:
Today I have resigned from the office of United States Representative for Michigan’s 11th Congressional District.
After nearly 26 years in elected office, this past nightmarish month and a half have, for the first time, severed the necessary harmony between the needs of my constituency and of my family. As this harmony is required to serve, its absence requires I leave.
The recent event’s totality of calumnies, indignities and deceits have weighed most heavily upon my family. Thus, acutely aware one cannot rebuild their hearth of home amongst the ruins of their U.S. House office, for the sake of my loved ones I must “strike another match, go start anew” by embracing the promotion back from public servant to sovereign citizen.
I do not leave for an existing job and face diminishing prospects (and am both unwilling and ill-suited to lobby), my priorities are twofold: find gainful employment to help provide for my family; and continue to assist, in any way they see fit, the Michigan Attorney General’s earnest and thorough investigation, which I requested, into the 2012 petition filing.
While our family takes this step into the rest of our lives, we do so with the ultimate confidence in our country’s future. True, as at other times in the life of our nation, we live in an Age of Extremes that prizes intensity over sanity; rhetoric over reality; and destruction over creation. But this too shall pass, thanks to the infinite, inspired wisdom of the sovereign people who, with God’s continued blessings, will again affirm for the generations American Exceptionalism.
Truly, it is a challenging and fortunate time to live in our blessed sanctuary of liberty.
In closing, to The People of Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, I can but say this: Thank you for the privilege of having worked for you.
McCotter’s fate following this decision is unclear, as is the matter of his successor. McCotter’s staff will apparently remain available to provide constituent services, but without a Congressman to address, this is almost certainly an insufficient solution. A special election may have to be held to serve out the few months left in McCotter’s term, which would have probably ended in November anyway, seeing as McCotter had failed to qualify for the ballot in his own district after a potential case of fraud in filing his nominating petition.

Posted on July 8, 2012 at 1:07pm26 years is 20 years too long to be a member of congress or any elected office for that matter. To have a government of the people we need our elected officials to be people who have worked outside of the insulated, isolated world of governance. No federal official should be in office more than 8 years, sum total time for life. No Federal elected official should collect a government pension, because they should not be in office long enough to qualify.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 11:36pmThe only elected office I ever held was on the school board. I resigned six months before the election because it was clear that I could not make a difference, even if I were reelected. There are other ways to make a difference and each person has to evaluate the cost and the possibilities for themselves.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 10:14pmThaddeus McCotter is a good man and is NO RINO.
Steeped in that cesspool 24/7 seeing first hand the Constitution get torn apart – it appears he wants to work with the attorney general or some other office/program where he can take a more hands on battle against Marxism/erosion of our civil liberties.
He is burned out. If we are fried and shell shocked – he is right in the front of it and knows more than we do. Remember when Beck was suffering from stress/worry on Fox. I could walk away from the TV when what Beck was saying upset me ( I could NOT believe those things were happening in the USA) but Beck could NOT leave. Neither could Congressman McCotter.
Good luck to you Congressman McCotter – and stay on Red Eye!! Let us know exactly what you are doing to continue the good fight.

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 9:31pmSorry but Mr. Mccotter isn’t dealing with near what George Washington and his army dealt with during the Revolutionary War. He hasn’t suffered like Sam Adams did, Nathan Hale did. They all pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor and kept their word. Doesn’t Mccotter know are at a tipping point in America? Good men and women are few and far between, we can not spare even the loss of one! My stars man what are you thinking? If you don‘t stand up now you’re children will NOT live in a free nation. This is huge…….makes me very angry and very sad.

It is amazing how many times the rush to judgement gets the facts wrong. Be it that the media usually attaches the Tea Party as terrorists, and ‘Occupy’, full of Marxists, Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, Progressives, unions, celebrities, mainstream media and touting Democrats in office as ‘patriots.’

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 10:30pmLIke Obama did in the 2008 Indiana primary – LOL
He was NOT QUALIFIED to be on the primary ballot – not enough signatures. So they CHEATED and put in fake signatures so he would qualify .
In 2012 dems went to prison for this THE END JUSTIFIED THE MEANS. Obama is STILL in office when he would NOT have been IF he has followed the RULES in INDIANA.
THAT IS THE GOP PROBLEM. They are BOY SCOUTS following the RULE BOOKS and getting their axxes kicked by democrats/Marxists WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THE RULES. The GOP needs to FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE – LIE CHEAT – whatever – just get it done. We will LOSE our country otherwise.
