GOP Reps Poke Fun at Colleague After He Launches Into Spanish at English-Only Bill Hearing

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) is not a fan of a GOP bill to declare English the official language of the United States — so much so that he delivered his opening statement in Spanish during a committee hearing Thursday to voice his disapproval.

“Today, immigrants from Asia or Latin America are the targets of demonization and discrimination. One day, our nation will again look back on this period with shame and regret,” Conyers told his fellow House Judiciary Committee members, according to a partial translation from Univision.

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said afterward Conyers’ stunt actually “makes the case for this bill better than anything else.”

“I would ask the gentleman in the interest of fairness here…would you repeat that in Yiddish and Vietnamese and French, as well,” Franks said. “Nothing would make the point better if we conducted all of our debates in different languages and I suppose that makes the case for this bill better than anything else.”

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), the sponsor of the “English Language Unity Act,“ said he had planned to ”start out with a Tower of Babble discussion, but I think I’ll pass on that. Mr. Conyers has perhaps made my point for me.”

    This is just another example of a politician showing his stupidity to America. I can’t imagine anyone being proud to have John Conyers representing them. He may have done great things in the past, but in the last four years, he has shown me nothing but incompetency.

      But then again my comment was partly true about he GOP. The presumptive winner in Texas for state senate David Dewhurst (who lost by the way) would only debate Tea Party backed Ted Cruz if the debate was held in Spanish.

      The GOP is progressively morphing into something else. That is unless we can get more REAL Tea Party candidates to replace them all. David Dewhurst’s campaign was funded by the progressive RNC and GOP. Ted still won. No dummies here in TEXAS.

He speaks English about as well as he speaks spanish. BTW yes he was the dumb reggin that thought an island would tip over because to many US military personnell would be on one side… When livestock get to be in his shape, you either shoot em and hunt coyotes off of their carcass, or you sell em by the pound for what ever they are worth in ferilizer and dog food.

    I walked out of an Old Navy yesterday!! They were playing Hispanic music so loud i could barely hear myself think. when i asked if they were going to play some Irish music or some oriental, the lady thought i was nuts. I told her we are no longer spending our money somewhere like this! Fair is fair, it’s not about SPANISH, its about fair! if your going to bend for one language, you bend for all or you make us ONE LANGUAGE!!!

      I am in mexcico, was born here and am a dual citizen. I think you are a liar, you are not mexican. Most people do not speak english, pretty much nothing is done here is done in english. Do not expect the schools here to send anything in english. Do not expect anything from the government in english.

      There are far mor bilingual people in t he us, both from mexico and the us. Schools have english speaking teachers, send paperwork in spanish, so does the government and many businesses. Many jobs there have people that do not speak english (try getting a job here without speaking spanish and they do not learn english as they do not need to.

      Your comment is a very ignorant one, but then you are a pimply faced white Iibtard adolescent from the dumbocratic underachiever forum living in your parents basement.

      The language here in mexico is spanish, period. There is nothing wrong with the language in the us being english. .

      There is a whole country of French/English speaking people above us, why cant we afford to teach our students French so that they can cater to the Canadians that come “south for the winter?”.

      Used to land jobs at Old Orchard Beach and Bar Harbor working the resturants and the connections from these fine Frenchies helped me and my friends in landing better jobs and meeting the right people… but what language do we get to learn?

      After hiring hispanics for the last twenty five years, I can tell you for a fact they are the most ignorant race of humans on the face of this earth. I have two dogs that are smarter than any Mexican I have ever hired. They wear the same clothes to work everyday, The complain because they want more hours but then they dont want to work on SAT or SUN when I have extra work. They spend all their money at the casino then bitch because you wont loan them any. They cant figure out anything on their own and if they try to it is a cluster ****. They do not plan ahead and they only live for today. Most of them from my experience are liars, cheaters and drug users. When you ask them if they understand something they tell you yes when in reality they do not. They never take a process and use their brain to make it easier or simpler. They just keep doing the same thing over and over and over without any thought. What an ignorant race of people they are.

But gesh we had Spanish and French powers and for some reason we insist ignoring the north and paying full attention to the south… maybe the north behaves better?

      Yes, I do agree that there are some “winners” out there. But I used to run blueberry fields and yes, there were the ones that would want to be paid THAT DAY and the next they were sleeping off an all night binge. Next season they were paid by the week. Then we provided modest quality food (usually mac and cheese (not boxed) and hotdogs but its healthy right?) and drink for a fee and paid them bi-weekly or by the month…(Their choice) After 10 years adjusting, we built a house. The people who came lived in it were nothing short of AWESOME. A few… probably 5 years after that, the families didnt come (they called :) ) so we had to hire ALL locally. What a shock for us! They complained about the quality of the bus that provided them free transportation, they’d complain about the water being warm mid day that we provided for free, they’d complain about the terrain, the bugs, the heat, the dew, the sun…and they took FIVE TIMES as long and would miss!!!! One of the mothers brought their teenage POS cause she didnt trust him at home… he burned down the house!!!

      Horrible year. Those stories of the locals were laughable to my regular help.

      Am I pro-illegal? Hell no. But you have to admit there are bad eggs and good eggs.

      And 25 years of bad eggs must be… oh man… I’d rather be hit with a hammer…

      Well, here’s hoping you have a better year!

      The Jewish Avenger There is a big difference between against illegal immigration and racist. I am against illegal immigration, you would be surprised at how many legal immigrants are.

      The US has pourous borders and pays people to have children and then many stereotypes the people going there as all mexican’s. They are not, they are people that were working here for 5.00 a day.

      I am on my second marriage, have grown children. My current wife has spent 2 years in the US a few years ago (I am a citizen, she is legal). She was shocked. She felt bad because she thought people would think all mexican’s were like the illegals (uneducated, etc.). Families there have FAR more children than here. Mexican women here average a little over 2 children each. I’m sure that shocks many there.

      Again, I am against illegal immigration but at least blame the right people. Close the border, stop paying people to have children and it will end. If the US was next to a country paying 10 times or more for work, paying for children (and the us was not), etc. does anyone think there would not be people streaming there? I guarantee you they would and it would not be the most educated, law abiding people doing it.

      Granted it’s a bad situation, but blame your own government for designing it that way. Close the borders and if you need people t hen let them work legally.

      The last thing I am going to add is that in arkansas i knew of a man (white) that worked in construction in Norcal and moved to ar. He started a business building houses, very nice houses in little rock. He had people lined up (early 90′s, dying in ca and booming in ar) and he paid a good wage but he could not find local’s to work. He had to go pick them up at home to get them to work and they still would not work. The Clinton “explosion” of illegals had not happened and he had a couple, he said he wished he had more.

      In NW AR my wife worked at a food processing plant. It was 10.00 an hour, holidays, vacation, good insurance, 401k. Not a great job but the locals would last a day or 2. They preferred fast food or retail for no benefits and minimum wage.

      The point is that no matter what the racists claim the illegals are there

      1. Because locals will not to the jobs. They will not work at jobs even with good benefits because “it’s beneath me”.

      2. Your government has the door open and the red carpet rolled out.

      You are blaming the wrong people. Close the door, drop the bennies and it ends. Business will close because locals will not do the work, but it would lead to legal workers.

      I agree with you. I’ve never met an actual Constitutional Conservative who was also a racist. It’s just philosophically impossible. How can one believe that every individual is responsible for his or her own actions, and then generalize the actions of a few individuals to a consitent behavior of an entire race of people?

      Would a Conservative ever assume that skin pigment causes stupidity, or laziness? That seems like the kind of anti-science, anti-imperical evidence mind-set of a Statist progressive. The racists always say things like “they should all”, or “the government should force them all to”.

      No Conservative would support forcing all of any group to do something, much less individuals. No, racism is a hallmark of the Left.

      It was my bad on that one. I should have known since foxnews also has troll’s there doing the same thing.
      My wife, who is still learning english, and as I said has only spent 2 years in the us has said she thinks the people are the nicest there than anywhere she has been. I agree with her. She was expecting racists, listening to the media, and I kept telling her it’s not like that.

      True story. We were going through oklahoma and stopped to eat. There was a thrift shop there and we decided to go in. Operation blessing. She was looking at clothing, really nice like new clothing, and she wanted to know prices, They said everything was free and she was shocked. She was embarassed and wanted to leave, she had never heard of such a thing. They said they had tons of donations and were overflowing. They found out we were going to mexico and loaded us up (we were already pretty loaded though) with stuff to bring down. We gave most to a couple different people for really poor pueblos. Really great people.
      We were moving back to mexico and a few months later we went back up. We had stuff in storage and made a special trip to operation blessing to donate stuff we would not be taking instead of selling it.
      The moral of the story is there are very good or very bad in all races. In fact believe it or not there’s probably more racism toward people of darker color here in mexico than there.

    I hope I live long enough to see English made the official language. I am only 51.. it may take until the end of my life to see it happen. I am in Texas so don’t know if it is a problem in other parts of the country but here in the stores shopping can be difficult at times. I have to look for items in english or try to find the english on the packaging… it is so frustrating! I live in AMERICA and am constantly frustrated by the catering to spanish speaking people.
    I am an nurse and have taken care of people who speak spanish only and when I ask how long they have lived in this country they will say 20, 30 or even 40 years!!!! … they just never felt the need to learn english because they have been catered to in spanish for everything including healthcare.. home health agencies spend a fortune paying translators to carry around english speaking nurses to care for spanish speaking patients.. yes, I have tried to learn spanish… sorry, just no good at it.. still trying!

      Hey Kansas Hawks, I know where I freaking live. I’m white, served 2 1/2 tours in the desert for nothing, speak only English, and yet I still think the federal government has no freakin business declaring any language as the “official” language of the USA.

      So if there is not an Official language as English, then the other language minorities demand that all government business must be done in multiple languages, all signage in Gov’t bldg must be in multiple languages.

      We are a melting pot, the one thing to unite us is to adopt a common language.

      If the founders thought having a “national language” was important, it would be in the friggin Constitution. There’s a reason there is not, and has never been, a national language: IT’S A STATE ISSUE, NOT A FEDERAL ONE.

      You need to put the booze down before posting man. This bill addresses the language that the government operates in, not what you are mandated to speak. Federal, state, and local governments spend millions in tax monies to print the same form in several different languages.

      It only makes sense to articulate that the government will conduct business in the single, official language of our country: US English. It is necessary to maintain the continuity of services that we want from government. I speak English and Spanish, I grew up in Mexico as a white kid (gringo), and I learned Spanish to operate properly in my environment. So should emigres to our country.

    English only is just sensible. It would save tons of money because it would (I hope) cut out the governments responsibility to provide translators, allow localities to not have to provide all releases or paperwork in 9 languages, and hopefully put the burden of making interactions with government intelligible on the people who want to intereact with the government.

      When my grandparents came here, they couldn’t wait to learn the language. It was their way of becoming an American. It meant something to them. They wanted to assimilate. I’m not saying they didnt speak Polish amongst themselve. but they knew they had to learn English if they wanted to get a job, buy groceries so they learned and spoke the language. They made sure that their kids learned it too.

      These new immigrants only want to take from this country and not give anything back, that‘s why they can’t be bothered to learn English.

      And I don’t mean all immigrants, there are plenty that come here still because they love this country and want to be part of this society. Let’s let only those people in.

    52/46. Who is your DEM Senator who wants to take over our private lives with this Bill? I can’t wait to check for I know one is our state is on that list!

    What a dope for a Congressman — English is the Only official language — you come to this country, you learn the language. Go to ALMOST any country in the WORLD and you either speak the local language or ENGLISH…so speak it here!

    What does this dolt want for an “offical” language? Of course we should have an offical language – which wouldn‘t be necessary if we didn’t have an illegal immigration issue, nor would it be a problem if the PC didn’ t print every form, sign, direction in multiple languages to cater to the illegals who refuse to assimilate into our culture. Makes me nuts.

      That was actually Al Sharpton, he was speaking Ebonics, and the teleprompter was messed up. Besides that you have the Rep from Chicago that english is a second language, and he is calling for open borders and total amnesty.

      His home was the object of neighbors complaining about what was tantamount to an abandoned home in a blighted neighborhood (which actually is located next to a golf course); several years ago members of his staff reported Conyers for using government paid staff as personal “servants” for Conyers and his wife; and, the wife was convicted and sentenced to prison. One has to wonder if the illegal aliens and drug cartels are the two groups responsible for this man maintaining his seat.
