GOP Senate Nominee: Victims of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Rarely Get Pregnant

Todd Akin legitimate rape pregnancy

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin (Mo.), seen here celebrating his win in the Senate primary race Aug. 7, 2012, said in an interview he doesn't support abortion even in cases of rape because victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant. (AP)

Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri, said he doesn’t support abortion even in cases of rape because victims of “legitimate rape” rarely get pregnant.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape is] really rare,” Akin, who’s running to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill, told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

He continued, “But let‘s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something — you know, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

A 1996 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology said approximately 32,000 pregnancies result from rape each year in the United States and that about 5 percent of rape victims are impregnated.

McCaskill tweeted Sunday afternoon that she was outraged by Akin’s comment, posting: “As a woman & former prosecutor who handled 100s of rape cases,I‘m stunned by Rep Akin’s comments about victims this AM.”

Earlier in the interview, Akin described his position as one to always “optimize life.”

“Sometimes people talk about life of the mother as a situation,” he said. “One of the foundational things America’s built on is the respect for life, and so I would say you optimize life. So for instance, a woman has a tubal preganncy or something. Well technically by my understanding life begins at conception so you’ve technically had conception, but the child doesn’t have a chance and will soon kill the mother. OK so I would say in those kinds of situations you try to optimize life.”

First elected to the U.S. House in 2000, Akin won the Republican nomination for Senate in a three-way race earlier this month.

They won’t. End abortion now and for ever. Maybe then the crime of rape will be treated more seriously than it is. Little girls who are raped need to have their rapes reported to the law and the Crime of Rape must be treated as a Capital Crime once again. Rape is now treated like treaspass.

These are the types of candidates and politicians that I say may as well be moles.

The answer he was looking for is that there is a life in question. Someone else’s life. Do you play God with it? Do you deny its right, endowed by our Creator? Do you deny not only a Life, but liberty and the pursuit of happiness as well. My position from a founding principle standpoint and a Biblical principle standpoint; NO!

To say “because they rarely get pregnant” is pitiful. Pathetic. He should fix it or drop out.

After reading the headline, I was going to explain why this kind of remark and others like it account for the fact the Republicans are about 15 percentage points behind Democrats with the female vote. Honestly I never thought it possible that a Republican would make a remark so outrageous, so offensive that Blazers would agree the remark was damaging to the Republican brand. Honestly I didn’t think that was possible.

Look up Clayton Williams of Texas. His rape comment helped Ann Richards get elected governor, which led to Bush a few years later, and ultimately to Bush becoming the 43rd president, and then Obama 8 years after that. Clayton Williams turned the tide of national elections today when his own stupid rape comment in a governors race 25 years ago played a part in costing him the race.

Her Robin Hood plan for financing schools is amazingly simular to Obama’s redistribution of wealth plan. She was also opposed to the concealed handgun law. The State had enough of her and she was handily beaten by Bush, 53% to 46%.

I never said Ann Richards was a good Governor. I said she only won because of Clayton Williams’ stupid rape comment. If Williams had won the Governors race, Bush would not have been President in 2000 because he never would have been Governor of Texas. That would have changed the whole political alignment because Gore would have likely beat McCain in 2000.

Men who rape women and children are looked down upon by other prisoners, and are constant victims of rape themselves or are targets for assaults. But, I agree, that his chances of getting elected went to almost zero unless he can come up with the study that says this. Then he just might have a chance – provided the media will publish it.

No, what he means is the only true rape is ‘forcible rape’ by a stranger. date rape, spousal rape, drugged rape, etc would not be counted. This is outlined in the Republican “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” bill which Akin co-sponsored with a certain Paul Ryan.

Their belief is that due to stress during forcible rape the fertilised egg cannot become implanted on the uterus wall therefore you cannot get pregnant. If you do get pregnant then it wasn‘t ’real’ rape.

I’m sure Paul Ryan is going to get a lot of heat for it this week.

If there is any science to back this comment ( he said doctors told him this is so) , I’ll find it. The GOP has to replace him. Or . . . was he saying legitimate – as in, WAS IT REALLY RAPE rather than – I would feel better about having this abortion if I convince myself that it wasn’t consentual sex? I’m not sure what he meant. But for all that started SCREECHING – he has offered clarification. (”I made that statement in error. Let me be clear: rape is never legitimate; it‘s an evil act that’s committed by violent predators. “I used the wrong words in the wrong way. What I said was ill-conceived and it was wrong, and for that, I apologize.”)

I‘ve checked Akin’s record and he is very conservative. I have no problem with that – you know where he stands and how he’s going to vote and the November election will decide his fate in Missouri. What I do have a problem with, is how quickly THE PARTY is willing to throw him under a bus for the sake of “winning”. PARTY members from all over the country are weighing in and telling him to step down. Makes me think that the PARTY expected a different candidate to win the primary?

God, please guide us and heal our land.

Oh, now, don’t go all nonsense on us, Nursie. he sounds as stupid as a conservative. Why? Because he’s a conservative. A Tea Party conservative. A Sarah Palin favorite. And this is what he believes – that there is legitimate and non-legimitate rape ANd that the female body, being so attuned to the invasion by infidels, can shut down the procreation process out of, what, spite? Divine intervention?

Nope, sorry, he‘s all yours and he ain’t that different than most.

Can someone tell this whacko that he is WRONG!!! I have worked in OB/GYN and I can assure you that women do get pregnant from rape. And who does this man think he is to talk about legitimate rape? Are we going to turn back the clocks now and say that, “she must’ve asked for it,,,because, duh! She got pregnant?” What a jerk!

Uh, did you not read the whole article. It says 5% percent of rape victims get pregnant. Using that percentage, the word “rarely” certainly applies. Just because the child comes from rape, does not mean it is evil, and it is ok to kill it. Why don’t you take a poll of rape babies and ask them if they would have rather been aborted. I wonder what the percentage on that one would be? Better yet, ask the mothers when the child is 18, the same qeustion, again, i am sure the persentage would be staggeringly low. When will we stop killing the future Einstiens, and Shakespeares, because of “women’s rights”?

As I understand, EVEN if conditions are PERFECT at the time of sexual intercourse (ovulation, etc.), the chance of a pregnancy occurring is only 20%. Why do you think some people have to try so hard over & over to conceive? That being said, if this guy is so inarticulate (about a subject that does NOT need expanding on because it is full of such land mines), he shouldn’t be a politician at a high level.

As a aside, read “Sperm Wars” & find out that the human body DOES do things that seem prescient. For example, if a man’s wife is going out of town for a week, the man’s sperm content can be double or triple normal for their last intercourse before she leaves, because his body is reacting to the chance that, if she encounters another man to have sex with, the husband’s sperm will be there in abundance to “fight off” the intruder’s sperm.

Some people can’t face or see the reality and it saddens me. But the point in the matter as I see it is that children are not punishments. And I stand behind that belief. I don’t care how the man says it, he said everything I put into the letter (minus the added bonus about the body suppressing the pregnancies though I put God did that for me) to Obama when I was in denial about the DHS mandate. <3

This is an issue that deserves a serious national discussion. But his reasoning, that women that are victims of ‘legitmate rape’ rarely get pregnant is dumb a$$ stupid. Moreover, his argument has nothing to do with whether rape is a valid reason for an abortion or not. He lost his election bid right then and there. BTW, what makes a rape ‘legitmate’ or not?

The sad thing is I‘m told that wasn’t a “legitimate rape” because I didn’t put the guy away. So if that suppressed the pregnancy by being a “illegitimate rape” then I guess the body works wonders.

Yes and in the constitution it is about LIFE now when you talk about abortion all it is about is death. Give the child up for adoption there are thousands of couples out there who have tried and tried to get pregnant and want children. Don’t punish the child for what the man did.
