GOP Tries to Take Out Tea Party-Backed Candidate

(AP) — Arms linked, Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell and her conservative backers kick up their heels and clap to the strains of an original song with lyrics befitting a tea party.

GOP Tries to Take Out Tea Party Backed Candidate“Look out Washington, D.C., ’cause we are on a roll and we’re rocking across this country with a message to be told.”

It‘s a tune that’s unnerving the Republican establishment in Delaware, which fears being felled by swift kicks from O’Donnell — and tea partiers.

Not longer after tea party-backed Joe Miller stunned Alaska GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Republican establishment is furiously trying to avoid a similar outcome in the Delaware primary on Tuesday. Republican leaders, top strategists and even the Delaware state GOP chairman have taken the unusual step of openly working to defeat O’Donnell and ensure the nomination of their preferred candidate, nine-term Rep. Mike Castle.

Republicans, who have an outside chance of capturing the majority in the Senate in November, see Castle as their best chance of winning the seat long held by Vice President Joe Biden. The moderate Castle is a former governor and has been the state’s lone congressman since 1993.

But O’Donnell, who has lost twice in statewide races, won’t be cowed.

“We cannot elect any more liberals to Washington, D.C., especially ones who wear the banner of being a Republican. It is an honor to be a Republican,” she told supporters.

Establishment Republicans have been relentless, calling O’Donnell unelectable, a fraud and a liar.

This weekend, Delaware Republicans set about knocking on 10,000 doors, making tens of thousands of phone calls and flooding mailboxes with fliers that explain both candidates’ records. In a primary that could draw just 30,000 voters, party officials are going all-in to defend one of their top recruits and discredit O’Donnell.

“She’s not a viable candidate for any office in the state of Delaware,” said the state party chairman, Tom Ross, who is backing Castle. “She could not be elected dog catcher.”

State GOP officials have done everything in their power to take down O’Donnell. For example:

—After a conservative radio host took O’Donnell to task over incorrect claims she won two counties during her 2008 Senate bid against Biden — in fact, she won none of the state’s three counties — GOP officials gleefully shared the audio.

—When a New Jersey university last week finally awarded O’Donnell a degree she had claimed for 21 years, Republicans called it the latest example of her exaggerations.

—O‘Donnell’s financial reports show donors are picking up her rent and utilities at a condo that doubles as a campaign headquarters. Republicans hasten to note O‘Donnell’s dire personal finances that include threats of liens, foreclosures and an Internal Revenue Service audit. Republicans then questioned O‘Donnell’s ability to handle tax dollars, and wondered about the marketing consultant’s reporting just $5,800 in income during a 15-month period.

—The Delaware Republican Party on Thursday filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing O’Donnell and the Tea Party Express of violating FEC rules that restrict coordination between candidates and outside political organizations. The complaint, filed for the party by campaign finance lawyer and former FEC chairman Michael Toner, states that the Tea Party Express solicited donors to contribute to O‘Donnell and that O’Donnell and the group worked jointly on advertising, breaching agency rules.

“It is a shame the party is doing this,” O’Donnell said after a rollicking dusk rally across from the Delaware Capitol this past week. “Because I believe that we have the right principles to win this election.”

O‘Donnell and her supporters just as eagerly point to Castle’s votes in support of the 2008 Wall Street bailouts, which were championed by Republican President George W. Bush, and Castle’s support for climate change legislation that has stalled in Congress. Those votes are immensely unpopular with conservative Republican voters.

“He’s getting harder and harder to support,” said Carl Williams, a retiree from Camden. “Castle should get off the Republican ticket. He says he’s a Republican, but he’s not a conservative.”

Others say Castle sides too often with Democrats; in a mailing, O’Donnell calls him “the most liberal Republican in Congress.”

“He’s gone too far left,” said Bob Haller, a retiree who carried a sign saying “Castle Voted Against God in Our Pledge of Allegiance.”

“He’s become nothing but a rubber stamp,” he said.

So in the nation’s first state, the contest has become a battle between a conservative activist’s fervent supporters versus Republican heavyweights. The race is shaping up to be a measure of the anti-establishment sentiment that views incumbency as a handicap and political inexperience as a valued quality.

The California-based Tea Party Express has pledged $250,000 to help bolster the cash-strapped O’Donnell. It’s not clear they will reach that goal; so far, officials have disclosed less than $150,000 in federal elections filings.

In campaign reports filed on Aug. 25, O’Donnell reported raising about $260,000 for her bid and had about $20,000 in the campaign bank account. Castle had raised $3.2 million and had $2.6 million cash on hand, which is why he has been able to spend freely on mail and television ads criticizing his rival.

The winner of the Republican nomination will face county executive Chris Coons. Unlike Republican-leaning Alaska, the Democratic nominee would have a better shot at the seat against O’Donnell, who lost to Biden 65-35 percent in 2008.

Hard feelings among Republican voters could linger well past Nov. 2.

“It angers me. I don’t think no Republican should really go after any Republican,” said Bill Valentine, who’s from Hockessin.

He is not alone.

Sarah Palin, whose endorsements have proved beneficial to other conservative candidates, announced Thursday that she is backing O’Donnell, hoping again to thwart insiders’ calculations as she did in Alaska with Miller.

“She understands the politics of personal destruction,” O’Donnell said of Palin, “and I think that’s why she got involved.”

The Republicans and the Democrats show how much they don’t get it! It’s not to big to fail nor to small to care, it’s about a smaller less threatening government! Why would the E.P.A. need an armed force? Why does the I.R.S. have an armed force? Why are members of congress and their staff exempt from many of the laws they force upon us?

Many in the GOP are big government advocates, currently happy that they are not the tyrants wielding the power right now. They disdain commoners, the unwashed, that want small, responsive, and responsible government. Just like our ‘betters’ on the left side of the aisle, they know best. We need to continue to hold their feet ( and bank accounts) to the fire, they can lead, follow, or get out of our farging way.

Tea Party wouldn’t have this problem if they would take over local GOP committees. I know a number of Tea Party 9.12 groups that are working to take over their GOP committees. This will help shift the party in the right direction.

The Tea Party also needs to reach out more to disenfranchised conservative democrats and have them do the same to the local democrat committees as well. We can help them take their party back from MoveOn and the KOS kids.

      Debrabate,

I’ll wager that the RNC will be very frugal with any financial backing for Trotter. Running for the Henry B. Gonzales Heirship Congressional seat is a pure suicide mission. Charlie Gonzales is every bit as good a Communist as his father was for 60 years. Granted ole papa Henry used jobs at Kelly AFB as his vote buying mechanism, but son Charlie now presides over one of the largest Welfare Populations anywhere. Not even the Vegas wise guys would bet a nickle that a Republican candidate of any kind could get that seat, and certainly not a non hispanic named Trotter.

As an aside Charlie Gonzales is a charter member of the “ReConquista Communistas” as we call them, including Ciro the ZERO Rodriguez and Henry the COMMUNST Cuellar. The only one of the three that faces even a token challenge is Ciro Rodriguez. He is up against a fella by the name of Francisco Conseco, so at least old Francisco will get a few votes anyway. Cuellar is our Resident Communist, but he‘s safe as a baby in it’s mother’s arms, he’s running against a Gringo named Underwood. But it is loads of fun to give them as much trouble as we can, whenever we can. They all have the characteristic ‘Malo Macho” thing going on, so every once in a while if you poke em just right, they loose it, and go “Ballistico”!!

These people just don’t get it. I was a delegate for Roanald Reagan in 76 when he lost and was very much a Republican. I still identified with the Republican party when Reagan won in 80. But when Bush sr was elected I was very uncomfortable about his stands (or lack of them). It was then I realized I could no longer identify as a Republican. I am a conservative that leans toward Libertarianism, but I am a strict Constitutionalist. I don’t give any party my blind alliance. I vote for the person that will uphold the Constitution. Both parties just don’t get it yet. I may not have a lot to donate, but I‘ll donate to O’Donnell. This really makes me angry. The GOP leadership sucks!!!!!!! They are every bit as corrupt as the Dems. We the people are going to take over the GOp or we will have to start another. Its easier to use whats in place, but we must expose the leadership for what they are: liars and deceivers. They are not the conservative party, they are the “whats in it for me party just like the Dems”. I want someone with NO political background. How could they ever in a million years do worse than these professional thieves and liars. I’d mush rather take my chances and a “real” person with their heart in the right place than someone thats already learned how to pick my pocket in DC.
With the internet, we thw people can unit and be a real force to be reckened with in politics. All we have to do is to get engaged in the process and support real candidates (citizen legislators)..

      Debrabate,

Can’t recite you chapter and verse with regard to Cornyn, I’ve just lived here for 60+ years, so I kinda know the lay of the land. Cornyn is exactly like most all of the Statewide Candidates here, old style Demo-Communists that have morphed into new wave Republi-Socialists. Our Governor “Great Hair Perry” started out working in Al Gore’s Presidential campaign many moons ago. Kay Bailey and Cornyn are both Washington Beltway Clubers that have gotten elected time after time by the “Lesser of Two Evils” default position. Same for Perry and it was the same for George Bush. Texas was a Democratic Stonghold until the Democrats went completely Communist, so lots of them kinda did the two step over to the Republi-Socialist party and continued with business as usual. Cornyn is a supporter of ‘Immigration Reform” as long as it means Amnesty for all of them to make his Cash Cows happy; Farming, Ranching, Oil and Construction. These folks love more Illegal Mexicans because they depress the wages for everybody legal and illegal. All of the aformentioned suspects also just love their Government Subsidies and pork barrel projects. Ag Welfare, both State and Federal is the backbone of the Agricultural Community in Texas. Haliburton and Brown&Root don’t live in Texas by accident.

So if you are looking for “Real Conservatives” any higher up the food chain than County Sheriff, expect something like the fellow with his latern, looking for an “Honest Man”

@GOTT-EM-MAUSER: I think most of the minions don’t get it but the corrupt leadership of both parties do get it but it feeds them so nothing changes. I agree with your point. I think what you are saying is exactly what Billy Clinton’s mentor said:
“The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can ‘throw the rascals out’ at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy” (Georgetown University Professor Carroll Quigley, Tragedy and Hope, 1966.)

I’m glad you see and understand. I am finally seeing that there are a lot of people that get it. What we have going for us is the elites are so overconfident that they cannot conceive of the fact the stupid electorate might figure out what they are doing and be able to field real candidates. They think we will just go back to sleep regardless of what happens in Nov. I know I’m in this for the long haul and I feel the formerly silent majority feels the same way. I feel this will probably take a decade or more but I‘m not quitting and I’m not going away. I owe it to my children and to the country I dearly love.

He’s a detached tool!!! I agree with you. Having money problems means you are real. It could be more than that and it could mean they might steal money, but I’d rather take my chances on her after hearing her positions on things rather than vote in a known progressive like Castle. He is the exact type of person we HAVE to vate out. Just like Graham and McCain. We need to get rid of these RINO’s.

I really wish the GOP would “get it” and work with the TP to find the best and the brightest candidate, not against them. They simply refuse to understand that the conservatives turned away from the GOP and joined the TP out of frustration with the oxymoron of “progressive republicans” and they’re out of control spending. Independents are turning to the TP because they don’t like the progressive policies and out of control spending. If they don’t “conservative up” and stick to it, they will not be supported by the TP, or the majority of conservatives, for that matter.

The proper place for the republican party is OUT of the primaries — the very fact that they are taking sides is a violation of the very principles of the party

tHAT IS VERY TURE BUT YOU SEE WHEN POWER IS BEING LOST, GOP establiushment becomes just like the progressives and Obama. This is a disgrace and shows exactly why the GOP is NOT the place for rule by law.

I strongly support Christine O’Donnell. I support all Tea Party candidates whether I like them or not. Having “outsider” candidates not from Capitol Hill is refreshing. I do love watching Tea Party people kick the sorry backside of the GOP clean over the moon.

However, O’Donnell publicly stating her personal war on masturbation concerns me a bit. Suppose she would have hard time writing legislation against this rather private matter.
